MacBook Pro :: Mixing Different Brands Of Ram
Nov 4, 2010
Right, so I got 4Gb of Crucial ram right now - MBP 5,1 It supports 6Gb, and I need it. So I want to pick up a single 4Gb stick. However, a Crucial 4Gb stick is like $113 while a G-skill variant is only $63.

I've almost sold my MBP and I'm gonna order MB early next week, so I'll need a good 7200rpm HD (320Gb) for my new baby.
What brands/models do you consider most reliable? On this forum I've read good impression about Seagate Momentus line, what do you think?

How about the 500GB in the 15"? Same?
And could some one check the brand of their 320GB disk in the 15"?

I'm interested in getting a Mac Pro for my recording studio. I'm trying to find out what types/brands of soundcards are supported. I currently use M-Audio, but looking on their site I see that they don't have any drivers that go above 10.5.8. It appears that I may need a new sound card if I get a Mac Pro. I need to know what my choices are BEFORE I do anything more. I currently use Logic Pro on my old G4 with Tiger & that's just not cutting it. However, I have a great soundcard so it still works OK for now.

I would like to get a USB wireless N dongle for my old PC, easy enough to do I was going to go with a Linksys WUSB600N but then realized I might as well get something that is Mac compatible so I can sometimes use it on my old PowerBook. After doing some research I found out that newer TrendNet dongles and some D-Link dongles are Mac compatible. I don't know about TrendNet because they always seemed a little cheap, I've used D-Link routers before and they're ok but the dongles compatibility with Macs seems to depend on the hardware revision. Are there any other brands who make Mac compatible wireless N USB dongles?

Just bought myself a 2.8 mac pro with a stock WD Caviar SE 3200AAJS drive and would like some opinions about which hard drives to get and how to partition them.
From what I've read on digilloyds site, I've concluded that it would be best to get a rather large harddrive with a small partition as bootdrive. The reasoning behind this is that data on drives gets read faster when that data is on the outside of the drive. So an 80gb partition on a 640gb drive would be faster than an 80gb partition on a 120gb drive, because with option 1, the partition physically remains small in regards to the whole, and therefore physically remains on the outside of the drive where seek speed is fast.
So my questions are about the technical details really:
1) Is there a measured percentage as to where drives begin to lose their fast outer rim performance? If that's say 10%, then I could calculate: I need 80gb boot partition, so the drive must be 800gb. Also, to calculate how tiny my bootpartition should be, I need to know how many gigs "breathing space" the boot partition needs. Anyone?
2) What's your drives config and partitioning? I myself was thinking:
- boot drive (how big?)
- drive with 2 partitions, one 10gb scratch partition for the current project and one projects partition for things I'm not working on.
- drive for reading samples from for drums etc.
- drive for time machining the projects drive, the samples I can always reinstall from cd, so won't need space for that..
3) What brand should I get? I was thinking Western Digital caviar black for the first three drives, and a more energy efficient caviar blue/green as timemachine drive. Do I need server drives like the R3 for any of this?
4) Where can my stock 320 drive fit in? Is it good enough for one of these jobs or is it just too old? I'm willing to replace it but I don't want to be splitting hairs. The potential replacement DOES have to add something in real world feel.

I just got a USB 2.0 emac for nothing that was going to the recycler. The door specs are: 1.25 ghz/256/40GB/Combo "About this mac" shows that it has 512mb RAM installed in one slot, and it is running 10.4.11 Anyways, it seems to be working great so far. I was able to get one stick of 256mb supported RAM from the only other 1.25 ghz machine in the lot - the rest were 700 - 800mhz emacs. Is it OK to mix the 256 with the 512? I've read many places that it is fine, but will it actually boost the speed of apps and things, or should I just leave it as is? I read somewhere that it might slow down the speed between the two RAM capacities. I don't want to spend any money to buy more RAM.

Is there anyone who would gladly point me to the righ directions in finding a Dj Mixing software?

Could anybody share some knowledge about mixing old and new macs and Airport base stations? At home I have a PowerBook with 802.11b and an iMac with 802.11g. They are served by an 802.11g-capable Airport Express for LAN, Internet and AirTunes. Now I'm about to add a MacBook and a Time Capsule, both with 802.11n. What is the best configuration to connect all this at the best possible speed and not loose functionality? most important is that the MacBook(n) communicates with the Time Capsule at n-speed without being slowed down by the PowerBook(b) or the iMac(g). The Airport Express(g) is still needed for AirTunes. All machines need Internet access. It's OK if the MacBook(n) has to change logical base station to perform different tasks (Internet, LAN, AirTunes) at optimal speed. I have heard that the 5 GHz band has difficulties to pass through walls. How bad is it? How do you notice if it has problems: does the speed decrease, or does the connection suddenly disappear?

My business partner recently bought a Quad-core 2009 MP with 2 nVidea GT120s installed to run 3 monitors. He is rather disappointed in the performance of the cards (slow scrolling and lags in rendering), and wonders if adding an ATI Radeon would work. Ie., possible to have 3 cards installed, mixing the two brands (1 monitor per card)? Or even using 1 ATI (2 monitors) and 1 nVidea (1 monitor)? Anyone know if this will work OK? The forum thread on the audio problem was a great help in solving another issue (well actually not solving, but using smcfancontrol to lower the temperature of the machine when playing music in iTunes) so once again here is a question for the well informed on this great forum.

I've seen the Apple articles and the forum posts about this, but before I need to check my configuration will work before it has to be used on a show at work (the MP is running screens in a venue). I've seen lots of scenarios with people using all DVI monitors or all VGA, but can't find any examples where they are mixed.
Here is my proposed setup:
DVI output - 800 x 600 - First device (DVI input only)
Mini Display Port 1 - also 800 x 600 - Second device (DVI/VGA input but strongly prefer to use DVI) via Mini Display Port -> DVI adapter (passive?)Mini Display Port 2 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter (active?) My worry is that there is only one active adapter in the system? If this won't work, I have two backup plans, which I would also like to know if it will work or not, please. One of the DVI devices has a buffered DVI link out, so I could use that to feed the other DVI device. So Backup plan 1: DVI output - 800 x 600 - DVI in of first device Mini Display Port 1 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter (active?) MDP 2 not used.
Backup plan 2:
DVI output - 800 x 600 - DVI in of first device
Mini Display Port 1 - also 800 x 600 - Second device, VGA input via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter
Mini Display Port 2 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter

I just noticed a MAJOR problem with iPhoto faces. After spending days working on my tags, all of a sudden I've noticed several of them missing and merged with other tags that they really shouldn't be merged with. For instance, all of the tags of my niece now seem to be merged with my nephew's tag (i.e., all of her faces are tagged with his, and her face isn't anywhere to be seen). What's more, all of the tags that I've assigned to my son now seem to be assigned to me. Now, I don't mind fixing some issues, but I've got nearly 3000 pictures of my son! I didn't notice this until I imported new pictures from a camera today.

Will there be any performance impact if I mix Apple ram with OWC ram in one of the new Mac Pros? I want 12 gigs total (6x2) and it's about $50 cheaper (with edu discount) to get 4x2 from Apple and 2x2 from OWC rather than 6x1 from Apple that I won't use plus 6x2 from OWC. FWIW, my primary use for the machine is Lightroom which is pretty reliant on memory-bandwidth so I don't want to do this if it'll be an issue.

My iTunes 9 is making my songs not organize correctly by album. Most of the songs are grouped together in my library that are of the same album, but one album has separated songs. They are the exact same album and spelled correctly. I just bought them off iTunes and was looking for them in my library and couldn't find them when I looked at the rest of the album. I look farther down the list, and way farther down they appear. Album name is correct, but I guess iTunes just decided to not place them with the rest of the songs in the album in alphabetical order it should. My iPod touch lists the same albums multiple times when I search for albums. The album "classical" shows up almost 10 times in the list for some reason. The song list doesn't differ b/w them, and some songs are missing. All other albums are fine. What is going on here? Did my classical songs all of a sudden decide to become unique in a bad way?

I'm going to be getting an iMac 27" when they come out and just get the stock 2x2GB sticks of RAM that come with it. I want to upgrade to 8GB... but I'm doing 2x4GB so that if I ever decided I wanted to do 16GB (I don't see why, but why not at least have half of it?).
My question is, if I do this, should I leave the 2x2GB sticks in with the 2x4GB sticks? Or should I take them out?
There seems to be some conflicting ideas about what RAM to use. I know you're supposed to do it in pairs, but I don't know how the iMac handles having 4 slots.

Do I run an ethernet from the Airport (the input with the little circle of dots icon?) WHat do I need to configure so I can run the PC hardwired and the MacBook wirelessly. Sharing the printer would be nice too.

I have 2 external FW 400 drives on my late 2011 iMac. I use an 800 to 400 adapter. I've been thinking of getting a new external drive from OWC. The have both 400 and 800. The 800 case has 2 800 connectors and one 400. Does it make sense to mix? Will they all run at the slowest in the chain?
I was thinking of connecting the 800 directly to the iMac using the built-in 800 connection. Then chaining from there using the 400 connection to the other existing 400 external drives. Will I actually get 800 speed on the first drive?

So last December my laptop got smashed and everything works except for the backlit screen. In fact I can still use this laptop it is just extremely hard since the screen does not light up. The person that smashed it ended up buying me a new laptop so I have this beat up (and I mean the shell is destroyed) laptop with quite a lot of functioning parts.
Now a few weeks ago my girlfriends Grandad spilled a beer on his brand new 2010 Macbook. The logic board is shot so it is almost cheaper for him to buy a brand new laptop.
Would it be possible for me to take the logic board out of my 2008 Black Macbook and put it into his 2010 White Macbook?

By far the most interesting benchmark trend coming out of the latest Macbook Air tests is that of the 320M GPU - is this thing somehow clocked differently than in the Macbook/Macbook Pro?
From:
[URL]
The latest Macbook Pro 13" 2.4 Ghz gets 33 FPS in Call of Duty 4, whereas the Macbook Air 13" (using the same 320M GPU) gets 40 FPS. Even the 1.4Ghz 11" gets 37! So obviously we're not talking about a CPU limited game - the only explanation then is that the GPU in the Macbook Air is clocked differently than in the 13" Macbook Pro, no?
From:
[URL]
Again the Macbook Air clocked at 2.13 ghz is beating the 2.4 Ghz Macbook Pro in World of Warcraft and Portal! And in WOW the 11" 1.4ghz still manages to beat the 2.4 Ghz 13" Macbook Pro.
Anyone have any additional insight into this? Anand did a terrible job of testing these for gaming performance, unfortunately, so he may not have even noticed this trend.

I have a 2008 13" white, plastic MacBook. Its a bit slow, but adequate. Thinking of selling it and paying the difference to get the 11" MacBook Air. I've heard it is similar in speed and has the same processor.
The main problem I have with my current MacBook is that its heavy - I need something lightweight to easily carry to school and class for note-taking and such.
How is the Air better or worse, and would I be losing anything significantly by replacing the 08 plastic MB with a MBA?

I just upgraded my daughter from last year's MacBook to a new 2009 MacBook Pro (my mother will get her old one) by cloning the drive using SuperDuper. Everything works fine except it doesn't detect the audio hardware in the OS. I see that the new macbook pro has different audio hardware according to system profiler. Is there a way to copy the driver off the install DVD or should I just go ahead and reinstall everything.
