I'm getting a kernel panic at start up and my mac wont boot up. I don't think its the RAM because the LED's are not red on the risers. When I start up holding "option" and select to boot up from the DVD it goes to the apple logo and on to the kernel panic. When I start up windows via bootcamp everything works fine. I've fsck. resetting PRAM, NVRam, nothing seems to work.

I'm relatively new to Macs and I wanted to try a clean install (or erase and install) on my ibook. I recently purchased a MBP and since Leopard is on the horizon, I wanted to do a "trial run" of installing an updated operating system. I know that you can just hit update instead of doing a clean install, but I've been reading that things run better when you do a fresh install. My old ibook still has Panther on it and I figured I could try to install Tiger on it from my MBP disks.
I know that this represents a violation of the license, but I thought it would be worth it to ensure that I don't make any major mistakes when I'm doing the same procedure with my brand new MBP when Leopard gets released. When I tried booting from the disk from my ibook I got a kernel panic which I interpreted as a sign that it was not a good idea so I abandoned the project. Now every time I try to start my ibook I get another kernel panic and I'm afraid I just broke my old computer.

So I use my wife's Imac startup disk to boot it in order to repair but I get the dreadfull death screen (I know how to press the C)
I'm thinking maybe it's because her disk if for her Intel proc so I go and buy a copy of disk warrior 4, and same problem.
I'm having a weird problem with a 15" I bought in February (2009). I can boot up fine into the OS without any problems. But when I try to boot from the reinstallation CD to do a clean install, I keep getting a kernel panic. (And yes, I do need to do a clean install.)

View 10 Replies View RelatedYesterday I purchased a INtel X25-V SATA SSD and installed it in my 13 inch MacBook Pro. Upon booting to a CD so I could install OS X 10.6 on the new drive, I received a kernel panic. After numerous tries I then put the old hard drive in (now clear of any data) and tried to boot to a CD again. Same problem. Now I seem to be stuck with a computer that will not boot to the CD no matter which hard drive is installed. I am able to use the SSD/HD in target disk mode. I can even install OS X to it from a different computer, but then when I try to boot on the MacBook Pro itself, I receive the kernel panic. The kernel panic seems to occur regularly after the Mac tries to load the CD for a minute or two.
Today I was preparing to get rid of my bootcamp'd windows7, change the partition size, and install XP. Well, I decided instead that I would just get a fresh OS X install, and install XP through the new bootcamp. So, I popped in my XP disc and went through the partition manager that comes with it (I don't know how to do it through mac) deleted all my partitions and installed windows so I could operate the cd-drive, and put in my OSX install disc.
(Perhaps I should mention I formatted it all to NTFS, thinking I could just reformat the whole thing with the OS X install like you can with windows). So, now I have a full NTFS partition, XP works fine. I can put in my OS X cd, restart and attempt to boot from a cd either from holding down option, or c at boot. When I try to do this, it pops up the kernel panic power icon, and gives me the "restart your computer" message. In recap my computer kernel panics on boot from cd.
Here's the question: Is this a true kernel panic, or is it due to the fact I don't have a partition available for mac to boot from? I didn't change any hardware, it was working perfectly fine prior to the -attempted- reinstall, and my XP install is working fine (minus the drivers), and after some research kernel panics tend to happen after hardware failures, in fact I had one happen a few months ago when my video card bit the dust.
my used eMac 1.42 ghz with 2gb ram, tiger 10.4.11 began to freeze a few months ago so I cleared the hard drive and reinstalled = worked ok for a while. Now, it is regularly freezing and even locking up when it has been running for a while - when it heats up. Until it cools off a while, on restart or after shutdown, it will hang at the grey screen or display a flashing folder with an alternating finder icon and a question mark - I assume it can't find the OS. View 1 Replies View Relateda bit complicated.  I have a 3 year old iMac, Snow Leopard 10.5.2 on the dics, but I updated it so..a pretty receent version of Snow Leopard. I had had kernel panics before- it turned out to be a bad RAM chip, replaced it and it fixed the problem.Â
This time, I was hoping it was the same. I got a new RAM chip, swapped them out and ID'ed the bad one. Reseated the RAM. Probelm is, when I was trying to fix the problem, I had booted in Safe Mode. Now the iMac starts up normally- the chime, the Apple- AND the Safe Mode bar.
Which progresses for about 5 seconds before another Kernel panic descends. This happens whether the keyboard is connected or not. At this point the Safe Mode at startup bugs me more than the kernel panics! Sigh.Â
I wonder if there's any key combo on startup I could try to at least get out of Safe Mode before Kernel panic sets in. When my laptop has a kernel panic i can usually repair with Disk repair on CD.  I realize this sounds hopeless! And i need it repaired, but money is an issue.
I have a Macbook Pro 17" (Model A1229). Since some days I am unable to boot into OS X. Regardless if I boot from internal hard drive, external USB drive, Mac OSX Install DVD or an Install Image of OS X on a USB Stick. Every time I boot OS X I get a kernel panic after some seconds. Sometimes the grey spinner (below the apple during boot) just stops spinning (no kernel panic then).
In the beginning I was sometimes able to boot into OS X but it only lasts a few minutes or seconds and then freezes or I was getting a kernel panic. Now I always get the freeze or kernel panic during boot up. As it also happens when booting from external sources it can not be the internal hard drive (also already changed that drive). So I thought it must be the logic board or something but I can run windows 7 on the machine without any problem! I already tried SMC and PRAM reset...

I'm getting a kernel panic at start up and the optical drive wont read the start up DVD. I can boot up windows via bootcamp and the machine runs fine. I'm not getting any red LED's on my risers, so i'm assuming its not a RAM issue. I have a Mac Pro 8-core (2008) stock, just added 10 gigs of RAM.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Mac Pro (late 2006) now has kernel panics at startup. Problem first happened while computer was in sleep mode, a second kernel panic happened about 10-15 minutes after reboot the first time. Now it happens at startup every time. Zapped PRAM multiple times to no effect. Tested original 10.4 install disk, as well as 10.5 and 10.6 upgrade disks with all external connections removed and from a cold boot. The 10.4 disk causes the kernel panic every time. The 10.5 and 10.6 disks do too, if the C or D key is depressed. The upgrade disks will hang in a gray screen (10.6) or pale blue screen (10.5) with no keys depressed--computer keeps running but fails to boot. Also tested the RAM (4 X 512 MB) in different combinations of one pair in the top riser board (and switched risers, and removed lower board completely). All resulted in kernel panics. Next option?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 2 year old imac that was working fine until last night. I had just installed the "raw photo compatibility" update (although i think this is just coincidence) and shut my computer down.
When i booted it up again 3 hours later, i got to my desktop but instead of seeing my usual 3 partitions (macintosh, home, windows xp) I only saw 2 - windows xp was missing. Not only this but my system was continuously beachballing.
I was unable to force quit so after a few minutes i held in the power button for 4 seconds until it shut down. Upon reboot, i was (and still am) only able to get to the white screen with apple logo that you get on boot up. On this screen you have a little gear spinning round. This spins for some time then just as my computer would usually boot into the O/S, the gear stops and it hangs.
I am running the latest version of Leopard and so far i have:
Tried diagnostics mode - all diagnostics come back ok, even in extended test
Single user mode - tried FSCK to repair, first time it made changes to drive, after that nothing.
Tried safe mode - wont boot
Tried booting from leopard cd - still hangs in same place
Tried booting from tiger on an external hdd - at same place it usually hangs, it kernel panics instead
Swapped ram out - exactly the same problem when using someone elses ram
I am running a quad core G5 PPC. I updated to 10.5.1 last week when it was made available and had no problems until yesterday. I tried to empty the trash and immediately had a kernel panic. I restarted and that is when the problem became more apparent then a simple restart! The Kernel Panic continued to repeat itself on the startup screen. I called apple support and went thru all the steps with them including trying to boot from the OS X 10.5 disk, in safe mode, as a target, trying to reset the (I guess I forgot what we were resetting but I was told to hold down Apple-R and Option-P) as well as opening the case and holding down the small button underneath the RAM. Anyway, nothing worked. Even in target disk mode, it made my G4 Powerbook running as the main pop up with a kernel panic! I cant get to the finder to see what the kernel panic parameters are.

He was unable to get it to start up, but eventually did, backed up his important data, and then I had him attempt to verify and repair permissions. I guess it indicated there were errors but could not fix them. Once again, his macbook stalls at start up and will not get past the gray screen with the apple and the wheel. Last night at this point it kernel panicked.
Today (since I'm back now) I tried to boot it in safe mode, and it still hangs. I zapped the PRAM, and that didn't help. My next step is to try and boot from his install discs, when he finds them. My question is, should I bother trying to verify and repair, or should I just do an archive & install (if possible) or an erase and install (if necessary)? This is a mac book from 06-ish running 10.4.? My hubby claims to not have installed or updated anything recently.
I moved over to an IMac from windows about 2 years ago and have never had any issues, until now. Whenever I boot my IMac I get a 'kernel panic' message (grey screen with 'you need to restart your computer in 4 languages). I cannot boot from my Mac HD, nor from a bootable superduper backup external HD, nor from my orginal SL or Leopard disk. All go into the kernel panic. I can however boot from my bootcamp Windows Vista partition. Tried booting into safe mode also does not work and gives the kernel panic screen. I have run both the standard and extended hardware tests and both have no errors. I booted in single user mode (that still works)and done a fcsk and unmount and both are without errors. Also done RAM flash. In single user modei can not find a PanicReporter directory or panic log. Cannot even install a fresh SL copy as my DVD wont boot either.
View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday I was helping someone getting to know their MacBook Pro (early 2008, Intel core 2 duo 2.4GHz, Mac OS X 10.5.2). I installed Perian and Flip4Mac and Firefox 3.6. I also checked for updates because she's on a very old version. I tried downloading the updates, but because we had a very bad internet connection I stopped the download quite early on and told her to do it at home. However after I left she tried to shut down the computer but it hanged. She manually shut it down using the power button. When she tried to turn it on again she got a kernel panic message saying she should reboot. This however didn't work.
Now I've tried all sorts of things. I've removed Perian and Flip4Mac manually. I did a disk verification (all was well) and a permissions verification and repair. I tried booting in safe mode (still won't boot) clearing the SMC and resetting PRAM, none of it worked. I just wanted to check here first before either taking it to an Apple store or reinstalling Mac OS X. I've read on forums about hardware failing (RAM mostly). No idea if that's the case. I tried a hardware test, but I don't have her DVDs and used my own with version 10.5.5. The Standard test said it was all ok, but the extended test seemed to hang. I could ask for her own DVDs which I will need anyway if I'm going to reinstall Mac OS X.

Yesterday my wife's IMac (Bought in 2007, running SL)started to "Crash" Safari, and firefox were freezing and then the problem expanded to other programs like itunes. So this is what I did.
1. Copied all music and pictures to an external drive
2. Used the installation disk to restore a backup from time machine
3. Left it overnight
4. This morning the Imac said restore successful please restart
5. I did and then I got this grey screen with a picture of the power button on it telling me in lots of different languages to press the power button and restart.
6. I have done this about ten times now and it just keeps coming back
I am running the Imac with a bluetooth keyboard but do have access to a wired one. No idea if that makes a difference just thought I would mention it.
Last night I was defraging my G4 OS Tiger 10.4.11 and at about 53% the power went out. Now all I get at start up is the Kernel Panic screen. What should be my first step?

My computer went down, when I brought it back up Final Cut Pro took 5-10 minutes just to simply open. I wasn't even attempting to open a certain project. View 8 Replies View RelatedI get kernel panics after a few min's of running the Mac pro. The ram are perfectly paired (2x 4gb in both slots, both in the first 2) and I get issues with it it seems. It started to happen as of today but didn't happen the days before. Nothing was changed in the configs or software.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently got a Dell 2209WA with built in USB hub. and great i thought, i can manage the USB ports on my macbook a bit more effectively. But it seems when i pull the USB cable when i want to go portable, it gets a KP, at the moment i suspect it has something to do with the logitech wireless adaptor i have plugged into the monitor. it exhibits these issues when the monitor is turned off as well.
I have another USB hub, but i pretty much use it exclusively for my external hard drives (i don't really like to keep it plugged in all the time, if powered up for some reason the drives spin up in the middle of the night even when the macbook is sleeping) and it does nothing like this when the adaptor is plugged into that.
I've had two of these in less than 24 hours on this new machine. I was able to work in Photoshop and Aperture fine, but the minute I started watching Hulu videos I started getting these. Oddly enough. I zapped PRAM and repaired permissions, and haven't had another one yet... but should I just take it back now while I'm still in my 14 days?

Happy for my macbook pro for almost two years. Lately it's been unstable and freezes sometimes. Two days ago it went to kernal panic and shows kernal panic screen and asks for restart everytime it restarts. It won't start on DVD or safe mode (it just hangs there and keeps spinning). I was updating my mothers ibook G4 and after the two restarts it gives me this. Is there any way to get past this she does not have a back up of her HD.
