Software :: Itunes Are Grayed Out?
Feb 7, 2010
I have an external hard drive with its own Itunes library. This has been fine until recently when we had the hard drive repaired. Now when I try to sync the songs, they are grayed out and there is no music on the Ipod.
There are two playlists with the same music (my library). One of them looks normal, but the one below "my device" is grayed out. I can't get any music onto the Ipod, even after restoring it to factory settings.

I was just checking out podcasts in the iTunes store now and noticed that they are all grayed out, and that I can't subscribe to any.
I figure this has to do with the fact that I must have removed podcasts from my sidebar at some point.
So I go into preferences to find all of the checkboxes, but podcasts is greyed out there too Therefore I am unable to check it. The only other greyed out option is genius but I'm ok with that

I have imported two different audiobooks into iTunes.I am using itunes 10.3.6 on a macbook pro, mountain lion osx.I do have itunes match, and I turned off match to import the audiobooks so that I could go in and change the "media type" to audiobook. However, now some of the tracks (not all) are grayed out and inaccessible on my iphone. When trying to play the audiobook it just skips the tracks that are gray and moves on to the next black track.I've tried re-syncing and it doesn't help.

I have an early MBP 2009. Last week I lost control of my internal speakers and I can't adjust the volume from zero and the bar is grayed out. Last week I fixed it by running the last software update for 10.7. Now my sound bar is grayed out again. I am not sure what to do to fix this. I don't want to keep running the updater since it ttakes so long and I loose productivity. My sound bar is grayed out again

I have a mbp 13" with snow leopard. I go to disk utilities to verify my disk (Macintosh HD) and it says I need to repair it after I start the comp with a disk like the mac osx installation cd. I do that and then verify disk again (because the "repair disk" is still grey/un-clickable) and it gives me the same message. How do I repair the disk?

I've got an intel Mac Pro with logitech z5500 5.1 surround speakers (another surround sound question. Yay!). I've got the speakers hooked into my mac using an optical cable. When I go into the midi audio panel and select the configure speakers button, the only thing that is enabled is Stereo. the 5.1 option is grayed out. All I want is to have some surround sound in World of Warcraft like I used to have on my pc using the same speakers.

I bought my late 2011 iMac used from a good friend that barely used it. From day 1, the WiFi hasn't worked and I could never figure out why. It hasn't been a big deal until recently because I prefer a wired connection anyway.. The problem is that I moved into a house and the owner's wireless router is located in the living room.. So now I need to get it working again. After troubleshooting multiple times, here is some information that you will probably need to help me:
-When I open Network Diagnostics, the only two options available are Ethernet and Other. The External Modem and Wi-Fi options are grayed out and un-clickable.
-When I go to System Preferences>Network, the only things shown in the left sidebar are Ethernet, FireWire, and Bluetooth PAN. When I click the "+" button to add a network, under the "interface" dropdown, the options available are: FireWire, Ethernet, Bluetooth DUN, VPN, PPPoE, and 6 to 4 (no wi-fi obviously).
-Under System Report>Wi-Fi, everything appears to be installed and running correctly. I'm not an expert on Wireless settings, but it seems right. If a screenshot is needed of that, just ask.

Ever since i upgraded to Yosemite my iCloud has been messing up. It shows i’m signed in but won’t display further details like used & unused space in my quota. It also doesn’t let me set up family neither does it let me check or uncheck options. Everything is just greyed out even when i enter my iCloud password it stays the same; Nothing happens. Tried over and over for weeks now; No success. It won't sign out also. I think there's something wrong somewhere. I have Reset my Keychain so many times to no success.

I have used facetime on my mac recently and have not had this problem until today. Facetime seems to have logged out on all of my devices but after putting my password in on my iphone/ipad it is back to normal however my Macbook will not allow me to log in. I also noticed that facetime preferences is grayed and I keep trying to turn facetime on and that is graying out as well. I put in my email and password and I get stuck on "signing in". Or I get past that and I verify my email and password and I get stuck on "verifying" only to get booted back to the sign in page. My OS is up to date, my wifi is on and working and I have no firewall on my home network. I cannot figure out how to fix this. I have tried some previous message troubleshooting such as updating the DNS entry to add 8.8.8.8 and that did not work. I have tried to toggle facetime on and restart but that did not work. I can't delete and reinstall facetime as it is connected to the OS and will not allow you to do that.

I have 3 auditing tools in my Excel toolbar -- trace precedents, trace dependents, and remove arrows. All of a sudden all 3 are grayed out and inoperative on one of my documents. (Theyre also grayed out on the Auditing item in the Tools menu.)
It's an ordinary worksheet (not protected) -- in fact it's an update of an annual financial report I've been doing for years. And none of my previous documents have the problem.
Ive tried to compare the problem workbook with other documents that dont have the problem, but I can't find the culprit.

Why does the ribbon part of the Reply window get grayed-out when replying to the same person for the 2nd time? It seems to work fine when replying to a unique e-mail for the first time, but upon receiving reply from that person and replying to that 2nd e-mail of his, most of the ribbon icons get grayed-out. Why? I've attached two screenshots for your reference - the first one with non-grayed-out icons, and the second one with greyed-out ones.

I have a problem with the new beta of FaceTime for Mac. Right now, all I can do with it is display a window of my webcam. I can't click on Preferences in the menu bar and I also notice that "Sign Out" is grayed out. I haven't entered an Apple ID because I wasn't prompted for one. I have recently checked Apple Software Update and I have all updates installed. I also have OS X 10.6.4 installed.

For some blasted reason the send button on Mail keeps getting greyed out. I try resetting from time machine backups. It will work for a few messages then become greyed out again.
When I used the Connection Doctor everything checks out as fine. My SMTP information is correct. As it has always worked in the past, works in Outlook, works in Entourage and cross checks as correct by multiple online sources and the ISP's customer service.
I have also repaired permissions.
Why would this button ever be designed to grey out in the first place? An error message after clicking would be better then a button that give no information at all.
Unfortunately this is a customers computer so I can't just swing by to check some more. The above listed steps are ones I went through before performing a time machine restore. Which worked for a while then the same problem occurred. Another Time Machine restore fixed it. Now the customer is having the same problem so I am trying to find another solution.

Anyone have this problem with the Facers feature? Both in the toolbar and in the drop down menu the Faces option is grayed out. I simply can't seem to get to it. Places is there and works but not Faces. What's odd is that I installed Aperture 3 on two Mac computers and everything is fine on the other machine. Reinstalling the software didn't change anything.

My Macbook has arrived, and since I have time to waste until the modem comes I figured I'd mess around with the Macbook and setup what I can in the meantime. I have some questions relating to the firewall and user accounts.
1. When I select "block all incoming connections" under the firewall options, the "stealth mode" box gets checked but grayed out. The box being grayed out confuses me. When I select "block all incoming connections" is "stealth mode" on or off? Why would that box be checked but grayed out?
2. I've seen it suggested that you should use one user account only for administrator purposes and another for daily use but not administrator purposes. Do you yourself do this?
3. When my modem arrives I'll have to configure it in Safari. Will I be able to setup my modem and use the internet with a non-administrator account?

I have three Internet Connect modem port configurations. If I bring up the Edit Configurations sheet two of the configurations are grayed out when I select each. So is the "-" for deleting them.I originally had two configurations. I can't recall now whether they were grayed out at that point since I didn't notice this until after I created the third. The third one I created is not grayed and can be edited, deleted, etc.I believe the plists for Internet Connect are com.apple.internetconnect.plist and maybeom.apple.internetconfig.plist, com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist,andinyHost/com.apple.networkConnect.MAC.plist (where MAC is my MAC address). But I am hesitant to delete these since I think one of them holds the filename extension helper associations which I prefer not to loose.
Finally, the Network System Preferences for the modem port reiterates at least one of the configurations I have in Internet Connect. But that's because I entered the same information there. I don't think there's a explicit connection between the Network System Preferences and Internet Connect which would cause Internet Connect to gray out the configurations. And if there were that might explain one being grayed out but not two. However, the Modem tab in the Network System Preferences for the modem port does have the "Show modem status in the menu bar" and when checked that menu does show all the Internet Connect configurations as choices. So there is some connection(s) between the Network System Preferences and Internet Connect.

I have an MBP running OS X 10.6.5 and I have a 500GB external HDD with 2 partitions (NTFS & FAT32), which I mounted to my MBP using FSTAB. Some of the files in the NTFS partitions are greyed-out, and i can't copy/open them on my MBP.
1. Copying the file returns this error:
"one or more items in {file} can't be changed because they are in use"
2. double-clicking the file does nothing
3. Right-click > Open With, returns this error
"Item {file} is used by mac os x and can't be opened"
I've used Terminal to move the file to FAT 32 drive and my MBP Desktop, but steps #1, #2, #3 still don't work. I realized the files that are greyed out are those that I copied from my MBP to the NTFS drive. Existing files in the drive can be opened.
