Software :: Globe Appears During Boot?
Jun 12, 2010
I have an IMAC 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM. Ever since I installed 10.6.3, I get a globe that appears for > 1 min before getting the apple. Boot times wre supposed to be improved with Snow Leopard, mine went the other direction.

I have a file that appears in the trash after every boot that can not be deleted, but when you drag it to the desktop it disappears. It seems to be the only way to remove it. You get no error message anytime. The file just has a bunch of ~~~~~ for identification. What caused this and how do you remove it? New 2009 3.06 iMac running latest version of Leopard. No issues at all with machine.

Since a few days ago my Macbook Pro 13" from last June started to freeze randomly for atleast 30 seconds and then it would come back and most of the time freeze again after a while (in OSX only it seems, Windows 7 I did not have such problems, though I didn't use it often). Sometimes it occured frequently, other times it didn't and this morning I had the same thing again, I just held the power button and shut it down, did this two times in a short period of time and when trying to boot it for the second time all I get is a gray screen with no Apple logo or anything.
Searched the forums, tried the install DVD and C button to no avail, same thing with trying to reset the PRAM and NVRAM...Is the logic board broken or anything? I don't understand how this could happen...And if I do take my laptop to Apple, should I remove the Intel SSD drive I got in it right now and put in the stock?

I woke up to my MacBook fan going nuts. Had an error message on the screen that said something about a disk error. The machine wouldn't do anything (force quit, launch app) so I hard powered down. Now.....NOTHING. All I get is the white screen, followed by the flashing folder. Here is what I have tried so far.
I already booted from the restore cd that came with it and opened disk utility. The hard drive shows up as something like disk1 but not "Macintosh HD."Tried to repair permissions and got an error message. Thought then to do an archive and install......and the HDD isn't even a viable option to install the OS on.
I had the original (but smaller) HDD that came with my MacBook, so I put it back in and everything booted up just fine and is back up and running. (Thank God for MobleMe that had all my contacts, etc on it). But I still have some info on that other HDD that I need. I ordered a usb enclosure for the drive to maybe try some recovery, but it seems to me that the HDD failed or something. Is there anything else I can do?

I've recently replaced my video card because the previous one had problems displaying garbled videos on screen.
However, when I took it back from the repair, and start booting up my computer, i hear the chime and it shows me flashing globe symbol as it's booting up. (when it's supposed to show me the apple symbol).

I was working with a Power Mac G5 when this strange thing happened. I had pulled the CD drive from the machine to test out a problem with a new Mac Book computer(door wouldn't open on eject command). Discovered that that we had a wiring problem (I was using the bottom connector not the top). So I go and put the drive back into the Power Mac, turn it on & the only thing on my screen is a small square icon with a picture of the North & South American hemispheres on it, flashing. Can anyone enlighten me as to what just happen & what I can do to fix it?

Over the last few weeks when I have been starting my computer up I get the white blank screen for a few mins then it goes to a flashing globe for a few more mins then the apple sign then it finally starts. I have been thinking about taking my computer in to get it fixed cause I cant seem to figure out whats wrong with it. I have looked it up on google and everyone seems to be saying to go to startup disk and then pick the right network volume to start up from, but when I go there there is only one choice its called "Network Startup" and there is a globe with a ? on it for the symbol. Also I read a couple places that its the hard drive warning me that its crashing? is this true? I also have had a couple freezes the last couple days.

I started up my macbook pro, and instead of the Apple logo popping up while the computer loaded, a picture of a flashing globe had popped up. I ended up shutting the computer off and then turned it back on and it loaded up as normal. I was just curious if this was something i should be worried about..? i've only had my macbook for about 2 weeks, and it's my first time with a mac computer.

The one I'm currently using had a problem and needed to have the hard drive replaced, which was done by a local Apple store. They were also very kind to reload Lion once the drive was replaced. I reconnected the machine to our domain here at work yesterday and have been experencing very long bootup's. During the boot process I'm receiving a flashing grey Globe of the Earth, prior to seeing the Apple logo. Once I see the Apple logo things seem to proceed normally and the machine completes the boot process. Does anyone know what this grey Globe of the Earth means? and what I may need to do to satisfy whatever is causing it.

I went to startup here at work this morning, and only my desktop has appeared. There is what appears to be a search icon in the top right hand corner of the screen and the pointer turns to the color wheel when I move across it. I have seen it do other things, but not this one.

I just upgraded an e Mac 2.0 from OSX 10.4 to 10.5. When the Mac boots to the login screen, only "Other" appears for login and not the computer admin I had listed. I've tried typing in the computer admin's name and password, with no good results. I booted with the install DVD, changed the password of the computer admin, and still cannot login successfully.

I accidentally removed my "Downloads" stack earlier today. I thought getting it back should be easy -- just drag and drop the folder back in next to my trash icon. But now it only appears as a folder, not a stack (i.e., when I right click on it, I only have the "Options" and "Open" links, not all the stack options). Is there something obvious I'm doing wrong here? My user and applications folders that I added to my dock as stacks are still working properly.

G5 Power Mac, 4 gb RAM, OS 10.6. Machine freezes up if: I run a video (1st, 2nd one), use Safari for a few minutes, use Firefox for 1/2 hour, longer if I only have 1 tab open at a time. Occasionally, I get the black screen of death instead, with the #s running about the screen (white font), out of The Matrix. I've run Disk Utilities - RAM checks out okay, cleared out cache, switched to a new HD (old one had been there since I got the Mac, several years ago), these have alleviated but not eliminated the problem. A tech friend suggested thermal grease on the CPU, or replacing the CPU, but don't know if the latter's possible. Oh, and some part is missing that results in the fan running all of the time, like being on a runway.

I thought I had RAM problems as I couldn't upgrade properly so I bought some new RAM (2x1GB) and replaced the old ones. However upon restarting a red light appears next to the RAM top slot and the machine still does not start. I also notice that the LED next to the power button flashes twice which according to some other info suggests that it can't see the RAM. I've taken it out and put it back carefully but to no avail - the same result !!!

I'm using a MacBook Pro, purchased in 2008, running Lion 10.7.4. My problem is that my cursor is jumping all over the place, will occasionally block out a section of text and then erase it, or the cursor will jump up to other points in my text, having me type into words already formed!! It has been a struggle to type this little bit of information. Tried restarting and zapping PRAM. Not sure what else to do. HELP. Is it on the way out?
