I want a brand new OSX installatetion. What is the best way to completely erase my SSD (to make it brand new) and reinstall MAC OSX (i can use internet WPA secure Wi-Fi to reinstall MACOSX Lion). On macbook air late 2011.

I wasn't getting the performance I wanted from my SSD and decided to take a Mac writers advice and do a fresh OSX (10.7.4) install.However, I now seem to be having problems with disk privileges currently is it to do with accessing my iTunes media folder.It will not let my download the latest podcast or make updates to my metadata.I also would like to be able to access sections of my previous startup disk when I want to transfer or view files, but they are locked.I can still reboot under my previous startup disk and login as my previous user, but is there some way to grant access the the new user identity of my fresh install?

It's the old story about buying a 2nd hand mac and forgetting to ask about a password. When I try to boot up from the OS cd my ibook goes into kernal panic. When I insert the cd and try to re install from it asks for the password. Is there a safe way to erase my OS and install afresh? Also Disk Utility keeps quitting, safari won't open. Is my ibook dying?

My Computer: 2.8 GHz intel Core 2 Duo Mac, running OS X Ver. 10.5.8. I've partitioned my hard drive before, but in order to get more space on my Windows partition I have made a disk image using a program called Winclone. I also backed up important files to my external hard drive, and then used disk utility to erase and make a new partition so I could restore the Winclone disk image I made and have everything back. What I'm concerned about is I've been waiting for this new partition (65 GB) to finish being made and its taking a while. I read that if you stop the process it could damage the OS X side and you could lose all your files.
I started to run time machine about 10 minutes ago and set the destination to my external drive for backup (Its a huge drive, it can hold 650+ GB so I'm not worried about running out of space.) Do I stop Disk Utility and risk it? Do I let it run? Do I kiss my computer goodbye and pray that Time Machine backed everything up right onto my external hard drive? I don't know if Time Machine is working correctly because I started it after I began to partition my hard drive. What to do. Should I let Time Machine back everything up, the disconnect my external and end Disk Utility?

More recently I upgraded to 10.7 using the download from the online App Store. I would like to perform an Erase and Install to get rid of the 'dross' on my hard disk and may do this as part of the 10.8 upgrade although have yet decide whether to wait for this or not.Â
when doing the erase and install, do I have to start from scratch by loading the original 10.4.9 OS X version or can I start at 10.7. If the latter how would I do this given that I don't have a disk as it was downloaded from the App Store?

Today I used my wife's MacBook 2006 with 2GB Ram and the machine was faster to respond than mine with 4GB ram, so I would like to re-install Lion 10.7.3 from scratch. I have the partition with with the Recovery HD, I assume it is Lion 10.7.2. Since I only have the Snow Leopard DVD, what would be the easiest and better method doing a Lion 10.7.3 fresh install?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am about 2 years into my move back to mac with a small professional office and I am considering a fresh install of Lion from Snow Leopard on the Mac Pro (1st generation) and a 2009/10 MacBookPro. I believe the Mac Pro shipped with Leopard and the MacBookPro shipped with Snow Leopard but not sure if I am off by an OS release on that. In any event, it has been a /ton/ of effort in customizing this setup and it includes an install of Mac Drive, Parallels and other software and software settings.
I have also edited the registry on windows in a couple of instances and I have run a couple of Terminal customizations on the mac side. Two questions. What should I do to prepare for a fresh install and how much time might be involved in redoing my setup? Is it worth all the effort? I mean, I /do/ have a 2 TB hard drive to take the place of my existing 1 TB drive and I could use the extra space. But at the same time I wonder if a fresh install is necessary.

I recently wiped/installed Lion on my hard drive and I'm trying to figure out how to link my old time machine back ups to my time capsule. I haven't gotten the oft quoted dialogue box that lets you link it to the new install. Does anyone know how I can manually force this to happen? This nonsense: To upgrade your Mac to OS X Lion, you must be running OS X Snow Leopard. If you have OS X v10.5 Leopard, purchase OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard now and install it on your Mac. Then buy OS X Lion as a digital download from the Mac App Store- seems very very un-apple.

I am puzzled- I would simply like to boot my mac pro from leopard (current os), and install LION on a newly placed, freshly formatted internal hard drive on same computer. Why would i need to have the intermediary step?

I used google, I am relatively new to MACs, and the method I used was inserting the disk 1 while holding down the option key. It is reformatting as I type this. My question, does it completely erase everything? I know with PCs, a simple reformat like this does not always remove all the problems.

I am not using Time Machine as Genius Bar at the Apple store told me it was best not to (I was continually having errors and so GeniusBar erased my hard drive and reinstalled Lion). They said to then manually drag over documents onto my hard drive, avoiding the Applications, so no possible errors could be dragged back onto the clean hard drive.
But now I have Mail and none of my folders and previous accounts. Of course I can re-setup my accounts, but then they will just try to redownload all of the millions of emails I had before. None of the very organised folders I previously had, sent messages, etc, etc.

My older MBP is running very slow, and I have tried all the usual ways of making it run quicker - repair permissions, repair disk from Lion recovery partition, remove extraneous files, checking Activity Monitor, etc. etc. Someone suggested reformatting the HD and then restoring from a backup. I have the HD cloned to an external HD with Super Duper, but if I reformat the internal HD and restore from the clone, won't the problems that caused the issue in the first place just be cloned into SD and then restored to the reformatted internal drive, thus defeating the excercise?

I jsut did a fresh install. wanted to use my SL DVD but the MBP i5 refused to star with it so I used the original DVD (10.5) and upgraded with the SL DVD to 10.6. However after the initial SL Installation, it tried from the SL DVD and this failed. I did a manual restart, starting from the HD and everything ran fine. however today I note there is a locked file on the HD named Mac OS X Install Data. It contains 181 .pkg files.Now I suppose this should have been moved or deleted as part of the install process. Can I move them to a file where they belong?Â
