So I just purchased a new MBP and have Snow Leopard installed on my current machine. The original boot file is on my home computer (I am out of town) and trying to avoid having to download all over again.
Is there any way to "Clone" my current computer to have the operating system installed on my new machine?

I would like to re-install OSX 10.7, how do I find the copy of the install disk? Can I just use a software process to re-install? Clean install, not a backup.

My system (sig) has been relatively sluggish for a few months now. Right now I've only got Firefox, Snak, iTunes and Adium open and it's just prodding. It has a decent amount of ram that should be able to handle relatively easy computing like this.
So, my question is, what can I do? Should I just re-install? I wouldn't really mind doing that. I have all day off, and fresh installs are fun but I have a good amount of stuff on here. I have an external where all of my important stuff is, so a fresh install wouldn't be a bad idea in that way.
This machine is pretty old but I'd like it to be snappy like it once was.
Are there little things I can switch off or something?

I just got my new MBP finally! I'm just in the process of calibrating the battery (first initial charge). When its charged and I can turn it on, would you recommend reformatting the drive and freshly installing OSX? If so, would anyone be kind enough to be able to point me in the direction of useful instructions? (I have an idea, but dont want to mess it up).

I have a MacPro 2009 with OS X 10.9.5 installed. I just added a PCI-e card with a SSD on it. Can I install a fresh copy of OS X 10.9.5 on the SSD and use it as a boot drive too? I plan on using my MacPro for audio production and the requirements are quite stringent to be able to provide good performance. So, my hope is that I can boot to my existing HD while using Office, Safari, etc but when I want to use it for audio production be able to boot to the SSD and have nothing on it except my audio software (Cubase, Wavelab, & associated plug-ins) on the working system. I also plan on upgrading to Yosemite for my "regular" HD boot drive but leaving Mavericks on the SSD for the time being as the audio production software is not yet compatible with Yosemite.
I don't want to just move from my existing HD to the new SSD as I don't want all the associated software to be copied over as well. Just a clean install of Mavericks on the extra internal SSD. There is nothing on the SSD at this time. Only initialized. I believe I can use a keyboard short-cut on boot to tell which drive to boot from but I have not been able to find a way to download Mavericks to do a fresh install of it on the new SSD.

Alright, so my hard drive died a week ago and I bought a new one. I am positive that I have installed it correctly. But when I run the install discs, after I choose english as the language, it says "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer". I am using the install discs that my macbook came with. I have tried following many online tutorials that involve partitioning and formatting but I can't seem to get it to work.

Recently completed the Maverick operating system update. Still getting used to new additions, however I did notice I'm unable to access the Safari preferences section.
I know normally, you would follow the drop down menu and click into the safari preferences. Unfortunately now the words in the drop down menu are a lighter grey and unable to click into he section.

I've upgraded to mavericks. Everything works fine except Time Machine. I want to continue using my 'old' time machine backup on an external server. When I try to reconnect I get the following message: The disk image "..." is in use Try ejecting the disk image.
I have disconnected and reconnected to the external server. This had no effect. At first glance it seems I am able to access my old backup clicking "Browse other backup disks". But the I don't get my backed up files. It's stuck at today

I have a 2009 13" Aluminum MBP. Recently I installed a Seagate Momentus 7200RPM 500GB drive in it and used CarbonCopyCloner to move the data from my previous drive to this one. I then made an 85 GB BootCamp Partition, but removed it. According to disk utility I now have a whole partition dedicated to OS X that has 312GB of free space remaining, but according to Finder, i only have 230GB remaining. To try and rectify this and because I could not get BootCamp Assistant to format my drive, i tried repairing disk permissions, which worked, but then I tried Verifying Disk and I got this error message- Uploaded with ImageShack.us The thing is, i would love to do this, but I lost my install disks. My question is, instead of calling Apple for new restore disks, Can I just go pick up a fresh copy of 10.6? Or is there an alternative to use? Or should I just screw BootCamp and go with VMWare Fusion. I just need Windows to play COD4 and BF:BC2.

I jsut did a fresh install. wanted to use my SL DVD but the MBP i5 refused to star with it so I used the original DVD (10.5) and upgraded with the SL DVD to 10.6. However after the initial SL Installation, it tried from the SL DVD and this failed. I did a manual restart, starting from the HD and everything ran fine. however today I note there is a locked file on the HD named Mac OS X Install Data. It contains 181 .pkg files. Now I suppose this should have been moved or deleted as part of the install process. Can I move them to a file where they belong?

I'm currently a Windows user and I'm researching for buying a Mac (I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy it).
My question is how often do you have to do a fresh install, if at all? I do a fresh install every couple of months on my Windows desktop to keep things speedy. i also defrag every 2 weeks. Do you all do this with OS X?
My other question is how often do you reboot or shutdown? I reboot my desktop maybe 3 times a week and the rest of the time its in sleep when I'm not using it.

i just got a used mac g5 dual with no hard drive, thus no os.
I bought a sata drive, used macdrive on my pc to format it to hsf extended. installed it in the mac tower.
put in my osx 10.4 install disk (after holding down mouse button at startup), and i'm looking at - not an install screen - but a screen with a folder icon in the midle that flashes the mac finder icon.
i'm guessing the disk is not being seen for the install.
i tried pressing 'c' at startup, i get a gray screen for a moment and then it goes to the folder screen again.
my question is: how do i do a fresh install on a mac? do i need a certain os version to start from scratch?

I just replaced my boot drive, only to realize that I am not even able to boot to the OSX install disk with the GTX 285 installed... I had the same symptom when I first got the card, because you have to install the evga drivers prior to installing the card.
So... the question... is there anyway to do a fresh OSX install with the GTX 285 installed, ther than putting a card Apple supports?

So yesterday I decided to reformat my new MBP. I had it dual booting with Win7 and I just didn't like how hot my MBP got so I got rid of it. So I decided to reformat and pop in a fresh install of OSX, but I'm not sure if I reinstalled it properly. The reason why I say this is cause traditionally when reformatting my previous macs I would just follow the steps of the CD where then formatting the drive option was part of the step if I remember correctly. This time after putting in the OSX cd once it reboot.
I had to go to the utilities option select my drive to format or it would just reinstall the OS over top what was already there. After installing I noticed I had to rename my drive as well cause it was unknown. I never had to rename my drive before, so I'm not sure if I did this properly. So did I correctly format my MBP? Is there another way to do this to bring it back to exact factory specs? If not can someone let me know how to properly format my MBP?
