Hardware :: Recovering Apple Hard Drive After SMART Status Failed?

Oct 30, 2010

A while back I removed a Apple Hard Drive after I thought I had shut down the computer. Instead, it had just slept and so still had the power on. This caused the file system in the hard drive to fail, so I erased and rebuilt the file system on the Hard Drive. It worked fine for another day, and then failed. When I went to see if I could fix it, Disk Utility said the S.M.A.R.T status had failed and the send the hard drive to an apple specialist. Is there any way I could fix the Hard Drive myself?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: After Failed Update Some Applications Will Not Load

Jul 2, 2012

After multiple updates failed to install on a restart, including a security and Safari update, many applications on my mac do not work.I am receiving error messages such as this: [code] This leads me to believe that multiple frameworks went missing in the failed update; looking in the frameworks folder, the only ones there are iTunesLibrary.framework, NyxAudioAnalysis.framework, and PluginManager.framework. Where can I download these missing framework/fix the problem if there is more too it than that? Finder, system profiler, system preferences all work. Activity monitor shows everything as normal.

Hardware :: Internet Too Slow - Cannot Load Pages Failed To Open

Nov 8, 2010

I have the 2 wire AT&T router, connected to my time capsule via ethernet. The internet is super slow. I have 12mbps on my account and speedtest.net says I am getting 10mbps. But the internet is loading slower than that. if I try to open two pages at a time sometimes it says failed to open. and I can never just type google, I have to type google.com. I've cleaned all my mac's systems and added 68.94.156.1 and .157. to all the mac's airport DNS settings. What am I doing wrong? I can't call bc they don't seem to know anything about time capsules, airports, or mac's.

Intel Mac :: WiFi Connected But No Internet - Failed To Load Pages

Jun 6, 2012

I just bought a new iMac yesterday at the Apple store. I connected it at home to install a few programs, and the internet worked perfectly. (I also own an older iMac plus a unibody Macbook.) I go to the office today, and the wireless and ethernet cables connect and show bars, but fail to load any pages off the internet. All of the other computers in the office are PCs and connect perfectly fine to the internet using both wifi and ethernet cables. It's just the iMac.

PowerPC :: Dead HD - Repair Extension Program Offered By Apple?

Dec 21, 2007

First the question, then the story:

Does anyone suspect that a dead hard drive in a 20" iMac G5 could somehow be related to the component failure described in the iMac G5 Repair Extension Program offered by Apple?

Although the article does not list hard drive failure as one of the symptoms caused by this component failure, I am still concerned that it could possibly be related, based on the fact that it was purchased during the date range specified, and the serial number falls within the range specified.

So here's the story: A short while back, the iMac suddenly stopped booting. It only got as far as a gray screen with a small folder image in the center, alternating between a question (?) mark and the Mac Finder face. After asking around and checking a few forums, the ultimate consensus was that it was unable to detect the hard drive. So I took it to a Genius Bar; the fellow who was helping me tested the startup, then took out the hard drive and put it in an enclosure to test it, and concluded that the hard drive is dead. He pointed out that, even in the enclosure, it had no power at all; the only solution would be to buy a new hard drive.

I did some more online searching after coming home, and found quite a few forums discussing the above warranty extension, several of which cited the logic board as the problem component referenced in the article from Apple, and that there were bad caps in these models that were overheating. Sadly, I don't really know what any of that means... But should I be hesitant to simply replace the hard drive, for fear that the same thing could happen again? And does the fact that the article references power issues, combined with the fact that the Mac Genius told me that there was no power in the hard drive, mean that it could perhaps be related? Do I have a case to try and pursue the extension repair?

MacBook Pro :: Does Apple Sell Magsafe Extension Cords Separately

I left mine back home (6000 miles away) and find it annoying to have to sit very close to the wall every time I'm charging my MBP and using it at the same time. The extension cords I've seen on Amazon and the like all seem quite dodgy, is there any way I can buy the extension cord directly from Apple? I haven't seen it in the online store?

OS X :: Partitioning Drive For Windows 7: Failed?

Feb 18, 2010

I'm on a 15" macbook; 128 SSD with a single MAC OS Extended (Journaled) partition of size 120.99GB with 44.52GB of free space.I would like to install Windows 7 on my computer, and so I went to make a small partition for it. Using Bootcamp in an attempt to create a 30GB partition, I got an error message saying that some files could not be moved, and so the partition failed. I have no idea what those unmovable things might be.Using Disk Utility, trying to partition the drive results in a failure. In response to some threads I was able to find, I tried partitioning the new drive as free space, as well as trying for 30GB, 25GB, and 20GB... all met with failure.I have a time capsule, but my attempt to back up my computer seems to stall at the point of checking for changes (no change after 30 minutes, get pinwheel, tried repeatedly)How can I go about making a little partition for a Windows install? I've never felt so failed by OS X

MacBook Pro :: MBP Hard Drive Failed ?

May 19, 2010

The first day I got my MBP two years ago, it fell off the coffee table and got a small dent in the left side. I thought it was a cosmetic problem, and didn't think much about it. Three months ago, when my laptop was in for repair because the screen cracked due to a manufacturing defect, I told the Apple employee that when my laptop was in for repair, and they inspected the dent and found that it could cause problems for me in the future, to repair it and quote me the price to fix it. I assumed that the price to fix that dent and prevent future problems would be a lot cheaper than fixing whatever may break from it in the future. I got my laptop back, with a note saying that the dent was a cosmetic problem and consequently they didn't feel the need to fix it. So that was all good.

Until my hard drive crashes. So I take it to the Genius Bar, and they send it in for repair. I get a call today saying that the dent was the cause of the hard drive failure, and that the failure wasn't covered under warranty because of accidental damage. They also quoted me $1240 to fix it. I wanted to argue that since they didn't fix the dent and charge me for that three months ago because it was determined to be a cosmetic problem, that it should be up to them to fix the hard drive, since I tried to take the preventative measure awhile ago and they said there was no problem. Do I have a case here, or should I just have them send the laptop back and try to get it fixed cheaper?

OS X :: Retrieving Data From Failed Hard Drive?

Sep 14, 2010

My girlfriends HD failed the other day, with a lot of her portfolio pictures. She has a new HD and the computers working fine. My question is this - on a simplistic level, could transferring the failed HD platters to a new enclosure work as a means to retrieve the info. So if I buy I cheap working drive of same size/manufacturer - say 20 gig. Take it apart and remove it's platters. Then replace them with her failed disk's platters (160 gig). Would I stand any chance of retrieving the data? I really can't afford the $600 ish I'm being quoted to get it done professionally.
