Software :: Cannot Restart After Mac OS Installation

Aug 3, 2008

I'm facing a problem while installing Mac leopard 10.5.2. After I had installed Mac Os successfully, it told me to restart my laptop to complete the installation operation, so I restarted my laptop but a strange problem faced me. The apple logo and loading icon appears but nothing happens after that! I waited for about an hour but nothing new.

IMac :: Kernel Panic On Restart After Installation

Mar 15, 2008

I just got a refurbished iMac G5 from the university. When I got home I installed all of my applications. I then update them. Like usual, I have to restart the computer when they are done installing to complete the process, so I do. However, when I boot up the computer again I get a Kernal Panic. ("You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button.")

OS X :: Windows Installation Finished With Error - Cannot Restart Mac

Feb 9, 2010

Every time I try to turn on my computer it immediately goes to the grey screen with the different languages that says you have to hold down the power button until it restarts b/c there's some error. Here's the story behind it. I tried to install windows but Bootcamp wouldn't work. It said I had to back up my computer and reinstall the OS as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (even though it already was!). But I didn't have an external HD that was big enough. I borrowed a friend's external HD and reinstalled from scratch (without putting my old system on yet).

The Windows installation finished, then said there was an error and to restart. It kept saying that and wouldn't restart. Then I tried going back to my Mac OS, and it immediately went to the grey screen with the different languages that says you have to hold down the power button until it restarts b/c there's some error. I even tried reinstalling my old system and it still did this. The disk repair utility said everything on the Mac OS should be fine, though. Eventually I was able to reinstall it clean from the Snow Leopard DVD, but now I can't get my old computer back or windows on it!

Power Mac G5 :: Try And Restart It Switches Off But Will Not Restart?

Oct 7, 2007

I have a DP 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 which is giving me problems. It is on all the time (server). If I try and restart it switches off but will not restar. Also, if it crashes (only happens once every few months) then it will not automatically restart. I have replaced the internal battery but this has not helped. I have also reset the PMU. Any ideas what may be going on here?

Windows On Mac :: Triple Boot Installation - Stuck At Windows Installation

Sep 19, 2010

I am trying to follow the following guide to do a triple boot, but I am stuck in Windows 7 installation
triple boot snow leopard, windows 7, & ubuntu

I have done the following:
1. Did a clean installation of OS X Snow Leopard on hard drive (Not yet partitioned the hard drive)

2. Installed rEFIt
I am not sure what the poster means by making sure it works by pressing the option button. I am assuming it means that I will be able to see the options I can choose when I press option? (I do see options to pick either "Hard Drive" or whatever disc in the DVD)

3. Partitioned 30 GB (or was it 40 GB? x.x I forgot sorry) space in Boot Camp Assistant for Windows installation. Chose the option to install Windows later.

4. Inserted OS X Snow Leopard installation disc and boot from there.

5. Opened up the Disk Utility and partitioned a hard drive (called Hard Drive_2) via the Partition section as instructed by the guide. Formatted in MAc OS Extended (Journaled)

So now, in that area I see "Hard Drive", "Hard Drive_2" and "BOOT CAMP" (so I am assuming that is what the poster meant by "3 partitions".

6. Restarted the computer with Windows installation disc.

Problems occur right here:
Problem 1: I do not see anything called "C something" as the poster said. But I do see something called "Boot Camp"

Problem 2: All the partitions that are available says that "Windows 7 can't be installed". So my question is am I supposed to "delete" a specific partition to install it?

I have pictures of the screen which I will upload later if this isn't clear enough.

Mac Mini :: Restart Message - Hold Power Button / Press Restart Button

Apr 29, 2009

I have just shipped my Mac Mini to its new home and I've had reports that the panic error is appearing on boot up: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart Button." This screen appears on the blue window just after the grey apple screen has disappeared and does not get as far as the desktop at the same point each time. We have tried to reinstall mac OS from the original install disk but holding the "C" Key or the "Option" Key down on restart doesn't boot from disc. Is there a way you can view the Kernel Panic log before you boot into Mac OS so we can try and pin point the source of this problem. I'm wondering if this could have been the result of the shipping that has caused some hardware to come loose.

Windows On Mac :: Bootcamp Restart - Option Won't Work After Windows Restart?

Apr 29, 2007

This is a problem I've noticed on two Macs I currently own. First I had my 20" iMac with Vista installed, and currently I have a 24" iMac with XP installed. In both cases, when I'm in Windows and need to restart (for whatever reason) and want to go back into Windows instead of OS X, the Option key does not function correctly to bring up the OS select screen, and instead will go straight to OS X, as that is the default OS I have set up to boot into.

So basically, if I restart from OS X, the Option key works fine and I can choose to go into Windows, but restart from Windows and I have no choice in the matter, it makes me go into OS X. Any idea why?

My first thought is that it has to do with the fact that I'm using Apple's bluetooth keyboard (and mouse), but once the computer has actually restarted, why would it matter? Does the computer remember the BIOS from Windows when it restarts, and therefore fails to recognize my bluetooth? For the record I have to turn my keyboard off then on again when entering windows to get it to be recognized and work, but not the mouse, which works fine.

OS X :: Mac Crashed During OS X Installation / What To Do?

I used a retail OS X 10.5 DVD to "erase and install" OS X on my PPC G4. It had been running OS X 10.5 without problems before but I wanted to erase everything on it. (In fact, I believe I upgraded it 10.5 with the same DVD). However, the mac crashed about 80% of the way through the process. It displays an alternating sad mac and question mark when I boot it up. I am occasionally able to boot it up from the CD but there is always a kernel panic before I can click the install button. What should I do?

Windows On Mac :: Can't Get To Installation?

On my iMac I have been trying to install bootcamp so I can get some of my favorite games.

I have partitioned the hard drive, I put in the windows xp disc to install, but when it restarts to install windows, it cannot get past the grey screen.

I'm not sure what the problem is, and I have followed the bootcamp assistant in doing everything it asks.

After trying to install windows, the only way I can even get it to reboot using mac is to do command-p-r. Anyone have any idea as to what the problem could be?

OS X :: Moving .app Files Around After Installation?

Sep 23, 2010

I like to keep my Applications directory tidy, so I have my software in several sub directories. I haven't had any problem moving the .app files around until I installed Virtual Box. It installs under Applications without asking anything, and if I just plain move the .app file somewhere else, the program doesn't run.

So, coming from Linux, my first instinct when a sw doesn't work from it's GUI launchers is to try run it from command line to see any potential error messages, and sure enough:

Code: sakus@MBP13 /Applications/Utilities/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS $ ./VirtualBox

VirtualBox: supR3HardenedVerifyDir: Failed to open "/Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS": No such file or directory (2)

So my question is - as I'm still not too familiar with these .app bundles - based on that error message, which file should I look for to try and edit the hard coded directory paths ?

Mac Pro :: How Do You Manage Your Bootcamp Installation?

Oct 13, 2010

Yesterday I created a bootcamp partition and installed Windows 7 64bit (only for gaming).

After the installation Win7 had already identified all the hardware, except the Bluetooth adapter (but i seen the drivers in the Windows Update) and the video driver (same as the bluetooth).

Then I put in my OSX DVD and installed "bootcamp software". It installed various drivers (chipset, video, bt etc.).

Now my question is: are this the correct method or maybe is better install only the missing drivers, after a clean OS install?

Because now I can't uninstall ATI drivers (the are 10.7 rev.), I have not the CCC (for adjusting some setting, i.e. forcing v-sysnc) etc.

OS X :: How To Kick Mac OS Into After-Installation Mode

Oct 23, 2010

I remember I once read that there is a file you have to create somewhere with some special name that tells Mac OS if it is the first startup after an installation or not.Depending on that it will bring up the welcome wizard or it won't. Does anyone know what file that is? I have been trying to Google it for a while now but somehow Google hates me...

I need it because I wanna reinstall Mac OS, then update with the latest Combo Update, and then kick it back into that Wizard mode so I can sell it fully updated but still asking for the initial set up info...

Early in the upgrade progress bar, where it says: "Configuring Installation", with less than 3 or 4mm of progress on the progress bar (18" screen, 1280x1024), it just hangs. It sits there and does nothing more. Both on my PowerMac G5 and my brand new Mac mini. If I wait for forever, and then power down, and restart, it starts right back up in to 10.5.5, and software update will tell me it wants to install 10.5.6.
