MacBook Air :: Installation Guide?

View 24 RepliesI had a Mac Mini sitting around the house collecting dust, so I thought I'd boot it up to have a small computer in my room. When I booted it up it started with the standard "bung" sound, but then it showed a blank grey screen. After a minute or so the screen turned to black, then came back with the same grey screen, but with a blue folder in the middle flashing a question mark, then the old Mac two faces logo, and continued to switch indefinitely.
Both said that it was unable to open.
I then tried to eject the disc so I could try my other install discs MacBook Pro, but the drive would not eject, and I had to open the Mini up to get the disc physically out of the disc tray. When I tried to do the install with my other install disc it did virtually the same thing with identical error messages. The only way I could get it to do anything different was to hold option on reboot, and the screen would go blue with the old school clock spinning as the cursor, a button that had a arrow pointing to the right (like "next") and a button with an arrow that looked like a "refresh." "Next" didn't work even after multiple "refresh"es, even though clicking refresh definitely started whatever process it was doing over again.
I know there have been a lot of posts about installing additional memory - I even watched the installation video over at OWC. OWC video shows two factory 1GB memory sticks - one in Slot A of the upper riser board and one in Slot A of the lower riser board. It says to move the module from Slot A of the lower riser board and install it in Slot B of the upper riser board to make a matched pair.
But here's the question. I have 4GB of RAM - two 1GB modules in Slots A&B of each riser board from the factory (I know - I know - I should have ordered it with the stock RAM and purchased the extra at less than the exorbitant prices Apple charges - but that's another story). I want to add 4GB more (two 2GB modules):
Move the two 1GB factory modules from Slots A&B of the lower riser board into Slots C&D of the upper riser board and then install the two new 2GB modules into Slots A&B of the lower riser board (just as the OWC video implies)?
Leave the factory modules where they are and install one 2GB module in Slot C of each riser board to provide a "balanced" 4GB on each riser board?
Options #2 seems to provide a "balanced" module location (4GB in the upper riser board and 4GB in the lower riser) so the four cores on each CPU can access an equal amount of memory for optimum performance. - but I have read that you need to install the new modules in matched pairs - but does that mean put them together on the same riser board? In the OWC video, if the two new modules were a matched pair then why wouldn't they be put one in each riser board just like the factory modules?

View 4 Replies View Relatedif I bought a new hard drive, would I be able to install SL on it? (the HD would not have leopard on it)
View 5 Replies View RelatedJust wanted to let everyone know this morning I installed a brand new drive in my mac mini (320GB 7200RPM for the record)
Then booted off the snow leopard disk and did a fresh install.
The key is to go into the disk utility menu when the first snow leopard screen is displayed (I think the button is "continue" on the first screen). Once in disk utility you can format your bare drive and then upon closing disk utility the SL installer will come back and prompt you to install on the drive you just formatted.
This was using the $29 snow leopard upgrade disk for the record (and yes I already owned leopard for this machine).
SL is so far working sweet except for the lack of istat menus! They really need to get a move on and get that SL compatible version released.
I have Intel 945 GNTL Motherboard with 1.5 Gb RAM, 120GB SATA HDD, 224 Mb VGA. I installed MAC OS X on my system. It installed completely but failed to load upon restart after the setup has finished. What do I need to look for running it properly.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am about to install a new (blank) hard drive to my existing 2009 Mac Pro. The Drive will then be used solely for windows (won't be a partition, but a stand alone drive, separate from my other drives which are Raid).
On the apple web site, it says that the OSX software installed will provide drivers etc. Does that mean that I should:
1) connect the drive
2) format the drive under OSX
3) run the bootcamp assist...
Need the complete disassembly/ reassembly guide for the 2009 13" Macbook Pro.

After I put the new hard drive in, which do i restore/install first? First restore my complete backup of my computer which includes the old OS 10.4.11 -or- first install the newer OS (10.6) and then throw on the entire old backup restore?
i tried searching but couldnt find much info on it. Would it be possible to put a SSD drive in the macbook?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been a bit of a PC nerd my whole life. I've always been the one who fixed my family and friends computers, tinkered with downloaded games software, overclocked, etc... I always really enjoyed a new projected because of all of the research and work it would entail, and then because I knew I was working towards the end product that I wanted.
I got my new 13" MBP yesterday and just sat down with it tonight for the first time, and in about 5 hours i've installed about a dozen big programs, made a boot camp partition, and i'm finishing installing windows 7 right now...
I have had my Macbook Air about a month now, still loving the laptop but I definitely see the need to replace the thermal paste with something better, I have Artic Silver 5 left from when I did it on my Mac Mini Core Solo to Core Duo upgrade.
Does anyone have a picture of how much thermal paste needs to be applied?
I would first like to start off with the disclaimer that I am not good at writing guides and I am also not a pro with overclocking but here is my attempt at both. Also I am not liable for damages to your computer and ask fobis has mentioned each gpu even if they are the same may overclock better or worse then the next. So take my overclocking numbers for what they are worth. Experiment and try it out on your own.
Note: This guide assumes your running Windows 7 64bit, and also it assumes that you are new to overclocking.
-------------------------------GUIDE------------------------------
1.First make sure you have a copy of windows installed through bootcamp.
2.Then go ahead and install the drivers that came with bootcamp ( we won't be using the gpu drivers but the rest are going to be useful anyway so might as well go ahead and install them )
3.After you have all that you will want to go here to get a modified driver. This will give you better performance then the bad drivers that apple supplies it will also let you overclock the gpu
4.After you have downloaded both the driver and the INF file open up the driver and it will extract the files to the directory that you choose. It will also try to launch the install but it will fail saying something like " no compatible hardware found " ignore this for now.
5.Now take the INF file and copy it to the folder that the driver was extracted too. It will ask you if you want to overwrite the file just say yes.
6.Now open up the device manager by right clicking on my computer, selecting properties, this should open a new window and on the left there should be something that says device manager.
7.Under the tab that says "display adapters" select the only device that shows up on that tab. Right click it and choose uninstall.
8.After you have done that it will likely mess up your resolution and set it too 800x600 don't worry this is normal. Now just restart your computer.
9.Once you have restarted when it starts back up it will say new hardware found. Now you have to choose to install it manually choose the option that says something along the lines of " search for drivers in specified area "
10.Now it will take you to a new page and on that page there should be an option that says "have disk" choose this and select the directory that you extracted the driver too earlier in this guide. It should find one of the files that it can use and install it just fine.
11.You will need to restart again once this is done but when you start back up your resolution should be fixed if not just right click and hit screen resolution and just change it back to the native resolution.
12. Download Nvidia system tools found here
13. Go ahead and install this it should be self explanatory.
14. Once it is installed open the program and go to the performance tab on the left. ( It might ask you to agree to some terms of use )
15. Just put in these numbers and hit apply
646 for the first one
864 for the second one
and 1314 for the third one
Now your done if your paranoid like me of overheating your computer you can also optionally download and install LubbosFanControl to max out your fans to keep it as cool as possible.
Enjoy your faster GPU!.

Another note: The highest GPU temp underload from Crysis got up to about 78C after about 15mins of running the game. Furmark got the temp up to 80C though after about 15mins also.
I have also played TF2 at max settings @ 1920x1200 for over 2 hours to test stability and it ran fine without any hiccups
Also I feel that this card can be pushed further then this ( I have not tried ) but from what I see it cools a lot better then I expected from a laptop I come from a world of desktop overclocking.
I tried searching on macrumors and google and found mixed info on how to do this. My gf recently got a new white macbook and is needing to get her files from her pc transferred over to the macbook. There will probably be over 50 gigs of info. Could someone link me to a guide in doing this step by step in precise detail?

View 5 Replies View RelatedHaving had a WD MyBook go bad after a couple of years, I am looking for a replacement. One priority is a longer warranty than the weak 1year offered by WD. However, since I fear that all data on this drive is lost, I also want to see if there is a better solution. Is there any advantage to FireWire over USB2.0?
One solution I am considering is an inexpensive NAS drive with two drives setup in a RAID (an example would be the Sabio Storage 2-Bay NAS Enclosure (CM200) - sold by MacMall.) Would this setup be more likely to safeguard my data?
I stumbled across a MacRumors guide to connecting a Mac to an external display. It was very thorough and even provided some links to third-party converters, etc.I have been looking for the last hour, and for the life of me, I can't find it. Anyone who is more search savy than me able to find it and link?I have an older acquaintance who needs some help getting her Mac mini (late 2009) to an older composite TV, and the 9400M doesn't can't adapt out to composite. I remember that guide having a link to a real low-cost converter.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI use CleanMyMac to clean up once in a while. its great when deleting apps and such, you just send it to the trash and it finds all the extra stuff, deletes it, and quits on its own. Same when it comes to external drives, it deletes unneeded files from those as well. Once in a while I go into it to clean log files and such, I do not understand what the Universal Binary part is. I run a MBP 5,3 model, with snow leopard. Do I need to keep those files? It says its something that has to do with powerbook.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I bought my first Mac (macbook) a couple of years ago, I read on this or on another forum about a link where I could print a nice, compact, fold-up, page of keyboard shortcuts. It printed out into 8 small sections on 1 page and was designed to be folded up very compactly and portable. Does anyone remember where I might have got this? I've lost one and the other got wet. I've tried googling with no luck.
