Just got a free Powerbook G4 15" 1.5Ghz 768MB RAM. I installed Panther 10.3.9 and have notices it's rather primitive. Specs say I can install up to 10.5.8 OS. So my questions are:
1. What is the optimal OS for my G4 and how can I get it (whether it be by purchase or DL)?
2. Should I upgrade the ram and/or processor?

I'm just wondering on how you handle the charging cycles of MBP batteries in practice. I think I read somewhere, that it should be best to work unplugged and to charge the battery as soon as the level reaches 10%. In practice, this seems to be cumbersome.
How do you handle this? Is it a problem to have the cable plugged in all the time?

I remember a while back ago, well over a year ago I discovered online a software program only for the Mac intended to help people go to sleep and more importantly wake up. It utilized your iSight camera taking a photo (silently) every time there was movement, as the camera was positioned to focus on you sleeping, determining when you would be entering a REM sleep cycle and at what times would be best for the program to wake you up. It was a nifty little program though used a bit of ram to keep up since your iSight camera was on all night. That and the program did a few other interesting things too. I hope someone knows what I'm talking about.
I'd love to check this program out again but can't remember it's name. I'm only doing so since I've moved to a new apartment and am looking for a new method to wake me up in the morning aside from my cell phone's loud ring tones. Or there is this other alarm clock that you set on the opposite side of your room and have a little laser gun next to you and when the alarm rings in the morning you grab the gun and the alarm won't turn off till you shoot the laser w/ the gun directly into the bulls-eye within the alarm itself on the other side of the room.

I just bought coolbook for my two and a half year old White Macbook. What would be the best settings/courses of action to keep my book from overheating and be able to comfortably play streaming vid. on a 23" monitor?
Don't know if that last part really makes a huge difference.

I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch 2010 model hooked up to a NEC Multisync EA231 WMI external monitor. The monitor is supposed to have a resolution of 1920 X 1080, but my computer only recognizes 1600 x 900 as the highest resolution. I've tried both mirrored and extended desktop, and I've also hooked up the monitor through a DVI adaptor and through a displayport cable. An Apple support person suggested using a dual-link DVI adaptor, but according to the Apple site this shouldn't be necessary for 1920 x 1080 resolution (I've also heard that it's a buggy piece of hardware). Any suggestions for getting optimal resolution?

I constantly see new threads concerning slow boot times. In the spirit of efficiency here is a quick tutorial to achieve optimal boot times on your MBP. First of all, I have a WD Scorpio Black in my MBP. My MBP boots in 22 seconds (from chime to desktop including fully loaded menubar with istat). I'm on 10.6.2. Second. You will need to do a lot more than just restore disk permissions to obtain the fastest possible boot time. Defragging your disk on the other is not necessary one of those things in my experience. Third. Hard-drive performance, in general and specifically when it comes to boot time, is greatly effected by the amount of used space (I've only used about 14% of the available space on my drive). If you have used say about 80% of the free space on your drive, don't expect a fast boot time (or great drive performance in general) no matter what you do.
Here's is what you should do. Obviously if you are going to benchmark your boot time you should disconnect all peripheral and turn of Bluetooth and Airport and have no files or folders on your desktop.
Download either MainMenu or Onyx and use it to do the following:
- Run all the OS X maintenance scripts (daily, weekly and monthly)
- Clean the system cache, all user caches and the font caches. Flush the DNS cache
- Remove temporary files
- Update pre-bindings
- Remove corrupt preferences
- Restore disk permissions
After all the maintenance do the following:
- Reset PRAM & PMU
- Restart your computer once more and then shut it down.
Now you can start your MBP and time the boot from when you hear the chime to when you see the desktop and the menubar is fully loaded. And remember if you are going to benchmark your boot time you should disconnect all peripheral and turn off Bluetooth and Airport and have no files or folders on your desktop.

I am trying to follow the following guide to do a triple boot, but I am stuck in Windows 7 installation
triple boot snow leopard, windows 7, & ubuntu
I have done the following:
1. Did a clean installation of OS X Snow Leopard on hard drive (Not yet partitioned the hard drive)
2. Installed rEFIt
I am not sure what the poster means by making sure it works by pressing the option button. I am assuming it means that I will be able to see the options I can choose when I press option? (I do see options to pick either "Hard Drive" or whatever disc in the DVD)
3. Partitioned 30 GB (or was it 40 GB? x.x I forgot sorry) space in Boot Camp Assistant for Windows installation. Chose the option to install Windows later.
4. Inserted OS X Snow Leopard installation disc and boot from there.
5. Opened up the Disk Utility and partitioned a hard drive (called Hard Drive_2) via the Partition section as instructed by the guide. Formatted in MAc OS Extended (Journaled)
So now, in that area I see "Hard Drive", "Hard Drive_2" and "BOOT CAMP" (so I am assuming that is what the poster meant by "3 partitions".
6. Restarted the computer with Windows installation disc.
Problems occur right here:
Problem 1: I do not see anything called "C something" as the poster said. But I do see something called "Boot Camp"
Problem 2: All the partitions that are available says that "Windows 7 can't be installed". So my question is am I supposed to "delete" a specific partition to install it?
I have pictures of the screen which I will upload later if this isn't clear enough.

I used a retail OS X 10.5 DVD to "erase and install" OS X on my PPC G4. It had been running OS X 10.5 without problems before but I wanted to erase everything on it. (In fact, I believe I upgraded it 10.5 with the same DVD). However, the mac crashed about 80% of the way through the process. It displays an alternating sad mac and question mark when I boot it up. I am occasionally able to boot it up from the CD but there is always a kernel panic before I can click the install button. What should I do?

I was trying to install Snow Leopard on my MBA via a remote DVD drive on my PC. The installation took about an hour and I got to the screen that says "Install Successful". It said that the computer needed to be rebooted and I clicked the button at the bottom of the screen that said "Restart".
When I did that, I got the colored pinwheel and it's been sitting like that for the last 20 minutes.
This is my first Mac and I don't know much about them so it figures it would happen to me. What should I do?

On my iMac I have been trying to install bootcamp so I can get some of my favorite games.
I have partitioned the hard drive, I put in the windows xp disc to install, but when it restarts to install windows, it cannot get past the grey screen.
I'm not sure what the problem is, and I have followed the bootcamp assistant in doing everything it asks.
After trying to install windows, the only way I can even get it to reboot using mac is to do command-p-r. Anyone have any idea as to what the problem could be?

I like to keep my Applications directory tidy, so I have my software in several sub directories. I haven't had any problem moving the .app files around until I installed Virtual Box. It installs under Applications without asking anything, and if I just plain move the .app file somewhere else, the program doesn't run.
So, coming from Linux, my first instinct when a sw doesn't work from it's GUI launchers is to try run it from command line to see any potential error messages, and sure enough:
Code: sakus@MBP13 /Applications/Utilities/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS $ ./VirtualBox
VirtualBox: supR3HardenedVerifyDir: Failed to open "/Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS": No such file or directory (2)
So my question is - as I'm still not too familiar with these .app bundles - based on that error message, which file should I look for to try and edit the hard coded directory paths ?

Yesterday I created a bootcamp partition and installed Windows 7 64bit (only for gaming).
After the installation Win7 had already identified all the hardware, except the Bluetooth adapter (but i seen the drivers in the Windows Update) and the video driver (same as the bluetooth).
Then I put in my OSX DVD and installed "bootcamp software". It installed various drivers (chipset, video, bt etc.).
Now my question is: are this the correct method or maybe is better install only the missing drivers, after a clean OS install?
Because now I can't uninstall ATI drivers (the are 10.7 rev.), I have not the CCC (for adjusting some setting, i.e. forcing v-sysnc) etc.

I remember I once read that there is a file you have to create somewhere with some special name that tells Mac OS if it is the first startup after an installation or not.Depending on that it will bring up the welcome wizard or it won't. Does anyone know what file that is? I have been trying to Google it for a while now but somehow Google hates me...
I need it because I wanna reinstall Mac OS, then update with the latest Combo Update, and then kick it back into that Wizard mode so I can sell it fully updated but still asking for the initial set up info...

I currently have a MacBook Pro and I am trying to put Windows OS on it using the Boot Camp option. I can download Windows 7 using my university's website, but all instructions for installing Windows using Boot Camp require using a CD. Is it possible to do it with it downloaded on the desktop, or do I need to put it on a CD/DVD somehow and then use that? I'm not sure if I can put it on a CD (with the stipulations of the University share program).

I was going to install Windows xp on my Mac OS X but uner the installation it interrupted because the guy that owned the cd had to go home. So after that I started my computer and it won't work. It's a black screen with a white flashing icon an it looks like this: I am trying to reinstall my computer but i can't beacuse it seems like I have no Machintosh HD thing [URL]. And this is how it looks like in the Disk Utility [URL]. Under the 250 GB hiatchi harddrive so should it be a thing called Machintosh HD but it's not there.

As of this minute I'm in the process of installing Windows XP via Boot Camp on a Mac Pro. The problem I ran into is that the install CD I have is for an upgrade to Win XP. Since the installer can't find a previous version of Window, it's asking for a install CD for the previous version. I do have a Win 2K Pro install CD, but I can't eject the Win XP CD from the Mac Pro drive to put it in.

I used BootCamp to partition my iMac's HD and install Vista. After doing so, I remembered I have a USB 2.0 80 gig hard drive with nothing on it. Would it be possible to put Vista on that? I'd prefer to just move the partition if possible, if not, I'd reinstall Vista. I know the Intel Macs can boot from USB, I just don't know if they'll boot Windows from USB.

Early in the upgrade progress bar, where it says: "Configuring Installation", with less than 3 or 4mm of progress on the progress bar (18" screen, 1280x1024), it just hangs. It sits there and does nothing more. Both on my PowerMac G5 and my brand new Mac mini. If I wait for forever, and then power down, and restart, it starts right back up in to 10.5.5, and software update will tell me it wants to install 10.5.6.
