Software :: Accessing Files Through Terminal While In Boot CD?

Jun 13, 2009

I need to copy some files to proper locations as my system got crippled.

I need to do this through the Terminal but while it's running from the OSX boot CD.

How do I access my regular boot volume (named "System") from this angle?

OS X :: Won't Boot After Terminal Safe Boot Command

May 15, 2010

After numerous attempts at booting into safe mode while holding shift on start-up, I tried entering sudo nvram boot-args="-x" in terminal to force it manually. Turns out my mac didn't like it that much.

Now whenever it starts up, it hangs on the gray screen for a bit and turns off immediately, never booting.

Windows On Mac :: Accessing Virtual Machine In Boot Camp From Mac?

Jan 3, 2010

I am running snow leopard + windows 7 on boot camp. All my documents/data files are presently in windows folders on the boot camp partition and I can access them and write them from my mac using Paragon ntfs.

When I try the VM Ware or Parallels boot camp virtual machines, I cannot access the windows folders from the mac. Most of the documentation assumes that one wants to access the mac files from the virtual windows machine. I want to do the opposite. Does anyone know if it is possible to set up the file sharing on either VmWare or Parallels to allow access of windows folders on the vitual machine from the mac?

OS X :: Accessing Hard Drive Files After Crash Without Restore DVD?

Sep 21, 2010

My Macbook crashed recently and it just tells me to turn it off when I start it. I've exhausted all the recommended options in the manual (default settings, etc.) and unfortunately, I'm missing the first one of the Tiger installation/restoration discs . Is there any way I can access the files I need to back up using Carbon Copy Cloner on an external hard driver (which in this case would be an ipod)? It seems to think you can, but nothing on their web site seems especially clear in this. Also - I don't have access to a Mac right now, so presumably I won't be able to unpack the files the CCC DMG on Ubuntu or the ipod - not sure whether that matters or not.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Stop Apps From Accessing Files In Trash

Mar 12, 2012

Is there a way to prevent apps from accessing files that are in the trash? I recently got bit when I moved some files to the trash, checked to make sure that nothing was broken, and then took out the trash. Turned out some applications were still using the files while they were in the trash. Is there a way, either in terminal or finder, to leave the files in the trash but make it so no apps can see them? It would be nice if this was the normal behavior.

Hardware :: Accessing Individual Files On Time Machine Backup?

Are there any trustworthy syncing programs between my computer and an external hard drive or in my case Time Capsule?

MacBook Pro :: Change Boot Options With Terminal?

Mar 25, 2012

How to Change Boot options with Terminal, or Startup Disk.

Problem I want to Install Boot Camp On my old Macbook Pro, But the "Superdrive" is not super anymore... So I only have the USB option. So I for instance partitioned my Extern HD and installed Lion in hope that it gave me the option to use the USB drive, since Boot Camp 4.0.1 have more options than 3.0.1 But all for nothing the macbook pros s EFI is set to only use the Superdriveport, and not like the Macbook air. I have seen I can use some rEFIt program to go in and change the preferred drive for starup. But I would rather like not to have a to change anything in the EFI with any program.

- So it must be possible to sort of make the Macbook Pro into an Air regarding the drives, if you know any kind of programming, which I dont.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Accessing Files On An External Hard Drive?

I backed up my iMac desktop at work onto an external hard drive.  I can see the files, but they are all locked.  When I go to open, I receive the following message "The folder (whatever the name is) can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."  I understand that the system I want to transfer to is different, but is there -- shouldn't there be an override asking for the password.

Since I am the administrator to both systems, I would hope I could see the documents that I created.

MacBook Air :: MacBook Air With Parallels Accessing Virtual Machine Or Boot Camp?

Jul 9, 2008

The MacBook Air video card is very limited to run HD movies, and when you run Parallels accessing a Vm, the video performance is very poor. I would like to know if installing Windows through BootCamp, could increase this performance.
1 - Any one knows if there's some advantage on installing Windows through BootCamp instead of Vm?

Note: One desvantage is that TimeMachine can not auto backup BootCamp partition, but it "yes" do backups the Vm.

OS X :: Moving Files In Terminal?

Apr 12, 2010

I am just learning Terminal and so far it has been fun but frustrating. I'm learning from online manuals and the manual within Terminal so everything is pretty verbose for someone that doesn't know the language yet. I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere, but the search gave me many results about moving files to the Trash or making a folder hidden. These are not my concerns for today. And for the reference, I know this can be done as a "drag-and-drop" operation in Finder, but as I said, I'm learning

So I am trying to move a couple of PDFs from my Documents folder to one I created within the Documents folder.

OS X :: Command For Opening Files In Terminal?

You'd think this was all pretty basic. It probably is.

I'm trying to open/edit '/usr/local/php5/lib/php.ini' with TextWrangler through Terminal. The TextWrangler part isn't an absolute requirement. The directory exists and I'm assuming the file does as well. (No 404-esq errors during my fumblings and it was a standard installation of PHP5)

Also, is there any way to browse through the above directory using the Finder's GUI? That would be nice.
