Right so im a newbie, just received my 27" i7 and absolutely loving the switch from winblows. Heres the situation i have two accounts, 1 being family and 2nd being business. They are both administrators but i've uploaded photos, music etc. onto the family account but i cant open them with the business acc. theres a little red stop sign by the folder. how do i overcome this for full access

The folder tells me I don't have sufficent privledges to access.
So I turned on my computers guest account today and while logged onto my username I tried to access the Guest's desktop folder. I was able to open the home folder but it said I was denied access to all the folders inside it, though I'm an administrator. It seems if I hit get info and add myself to the access list I can get into a folder, but is there a simpler way?
View 6 Replies View RelatedEvery time I try to access my users & groups it crashes my system prefs. I can't get to them at all to change anything. Similarly, trying to adjust parental controls for one of my kids crashes system prefs - it seems they are related... 10.7 Intel iMac.

I am having trouble connecting my mac to the pc, when I try to connect to the server and enter the pcs ip address it says connection failed and the ip does not exit...etc. I've followed the guide on here to and on [URL]
Does anyone have ideas why this is happening...? My PC is the desktop connected straight to the modem and my macbook connected wirelessly through the router.
I am having trouble accessing files with my brothers MBP (running latest v of leopard) from an external HD (FAT32 format) plugged into my iMac (also running latest leopard.) I have tried logging in as myself on the MBP, but all that appears is my main hard disk and my home folder.
It's very important that I have access to this drive!
If I create Excel files on the Windows side (bootcamp), can I access those files from the Mac side? I basically want to send the files via Mac mail as I don't want to set up Outlook on the Windows side. I won't be opening the files, just attaching them to the email on the Mac side.

I can go to another mac and it will show the same file with the proper file creator icon and description. I am not sure why this single 10.4.11 Mac is doing this.

My Macbook crashed recently and it just tells me to turn it off when I start it. I've exhausted all the recommended options in the manual (default settings, etc.) and unfortunately, I'm missing the first one of the Tiger installation/restoration discs . Is there any way I can access the files I need to back up using Carbon Copy Cloner on an external hard driver (which in this case would be an ipod)? It seems to think you can, but nothing on their web site seems especially clear in this. Also - I don't have access to a Mac right now, so presumably I won't be able to unpack the files the CCC DMG on Ubuntu or the ipod - not sure whether that matters or not.

I recently got bit when I moved some files to the trash, checked to make sure that nothing was broken, and then took out the trash. Turned out some applications were still using the files while they were in the trash. Is there a way, either in terminal or finder, to leave the files in the trash but make it so no apps can see them? It would be nice if this was the normal behavior.

I have a Time Capsule at home, and can opt for the automatic backup via Time Machine program. But I have been doing manual backups, transferring files myself to Time Capsule and to an USB drive. It's mostly document, media files. If I backup using Time Machine, can I access those files individually? Or is it just going to be one big chunk of a file? Are there any trustworthy syncing programs between my computer and an external hard drive or in my case Time Capsule?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI backed up my iMac desktop at work onto an external hard drive. I can see the files, but they are all locked. When I go to open, I receive the following message "The folder (whatever the name is) can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents." I understand that the system I want to transfer to is different, but is there -- shouldn't there be an override asking for the password.Â
Since I am the administrator to both systems, I would hope I could see the documents that I created.Â

i'm the admin of a mac lab at my university. users use one specific user account - is there a way to prevent this user from opening .dmg files? people can run apps right from a mounted dmg and i've caught a couple of people trying to download torrents here. though they don't have permission to move an app into the applications folder, they can simply run it off the desktop.

A couple of things to note;
- The two adults are the admin's

I just transferred a lot of GoPro clips from my (old, slow) pc using the Migration Assistant. Unfortunately it created a new User Account but I would like to move the clips to my user (and then delete the other user). Â

I've just received my new Mac and I'm wanting to transfer my documents etc. from my old Mac to my new one. I'd rather do it manually than use the migration assistant as I have more control that way.
I've got my two Macs set up side by side and have shared the home directory of my user on the other Mac. Thing is, I've run into a permissions problem. Obviously my old Mac only lets my old user access the files.
Is there any way to migrate the files between users on two Macs manually without resorting to something like "chmod -R 777 ~" to mass change permissions? Ideally, I'd like to just drag the files across and have them automatically change permissions when they're transferred to my new Mac.
I would like to be able to open up AFP on the Users folder (it is by default), but here comes my concern. Some of the users will have their sites hosted in their user Sites folders, including some PHP config files, potentially containing mysql login information, etc. Accessing the site through the web is no problem, as Apache w/ PHP will never show content of the PHP code, however AFP will!

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo my friend, whos' computer this is, deleted my account and all its files associated with it (when he was mad at me lol) but didn't realize or forgot that there was a text document on there with atleast 30 hrs of work on it and i hadn't managed to back it up on another system yet. so is there any way to recover this file? I have filesalvage running currently and tried diskwarrior but that didn't seem to be the proper tool to use. Any mac freaks got any advice? It'd be really nice NOT to have to repeat 30 hrs of work, but at this rate its already taken 10 hrs or so just trying to recover this file.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have to supply a generated set of files � a couple of dozen logos as .eps files � in a folder containing some other nested folders to a small enterprise that uses PCs for their day to day work.
The people I'm dealing with are not very IT-savvy and if I could, I'd provide a set of these folders and files without the corresponding invisible files that usually have a dot at the beginning of their file-names.
I'll probably zip the whole lot up and email, rapidshare or yousendit it over to them so they can unpack it and get to business without me having to explain what all those files with the dots are, and how to get rid of them.
Basically my question is exactly that. I am a new to mac user, and have got a new mac air. Whilst in the store setting up our new mac the people in the shop told us that we could only have 1 icloud account per user, and therefore my wife and i should set up separte user accounts. Great. However, we both want to be able to access all of our photos and our music library. I have been into the sharing folders, but i must be doing somthing wrong, because as my wife turns on iphoto in her user account, she cannot access any of our photos.Â

When I log into iPhoto I now get this message:
"There is a problem accessing one or more files in your iPhoto library. Do you want iPhoto to repair permissions for this library for you?" and it gives me the following options "quite" or repair"
Today when we started trying to add users to our server (we use it only for afp access at this time), we noticed that new users belonging to a group "storage" were unable to login from client machines via afp (clients both 10.7.2 and 10.6.8). Â
When we tried editing the users accounts to change which groups they belonged to, it would appear in workgroup (and server preferences) that the changes would take but there was still no access.Â
As a test case, we modified an existing user who had no issues logging in to belong to a diffenent group and have different sharepoint access. The changes looked good in workgroup and server prefs, but when the user logged in, he was only able to acces his old sharepoint and not the new one (and since his permissions to the old were removed, he shouldn't have access to that sharepoint).Â
Also, for some reason users cannot be deleted within workgroup manager any more. The login used was the diradmin account.

I am currently am MBA student and must create projects using power point/ keynote, very often. Many of the power points/ keynotes created by students are informative but lack the ability to hold an audience’s attention (boring). Since I have this wonderful Macbook pro, I would like to create a dynamic keynote presentation which would include clips of audio and video files (I already know about converting keynote to power point). The only problem is, the videos I want to use in the keynote presentation are not able to be manipulated in iMovie (due to their format), and if they where able to be manipulated in iMovie, I’m not sure that PC users would be able to properly view them.
What video format (including embedded audio) is able to be viewed and heard by both OSX Lion users and Windows users?  If this is possible, can anyone suggest a safe application that I can purchase from the apple app store that will allow me to convert video files (including embedded audio) so that it can be viewed by both Lion and PC users? Preferably one that does not need access to the internet in order to convert the files ( I’m on the go allot and use an air card for internet access), but I will take it if this is the best option. If the app store does not have this type of application, is there a place that I can download a safe one?Â
