Dec 23, 2007My Mac just made my heart jump. When I rebooted, it just showed a blank grey screen for about 15 seconds. It then showed a folder with a blinking question mark. I had seen this before on iBooks at my school, and knew it wasn't a good sign. I held down the power button, and rebooted. This time, it started up without a hitch.

Dec 18, 2007Yesterday my G5 (Dual G5 2 Gig, 10.4.1 OS) hung up while running illustrator 7, did an escape quit. Now the computer will not restart - a hard drive icon appeared with a flashing question mark. Ran the apple restore disk and the all hard ware pieces checked out fine. When I tried to reinstall the OS it does not open past the install icon. Startup utility does not find the one and only hard drive.

Sep 7, 2010I dropped my MacBook from a fairly low height the other day. Now when it boots up, the Flashing Folder-? Icon pops up. bummer. I've read around and tried everything I can find to try. I've read over posts such as: [URL]. Nothing works. My only problem is that I can't get it to boot the DVD startup disk at all. Everything I try ends with the disk being kicked out of the drive, or spinning for a while and then doing nothing.

Aug 9, 2006When I start my iBook, I get blinking network icon for a while, then it turns into folder with blinking question mark alternating with mac logo. I know what it means; however, I have tried everything to correct it and no luck. I can't boot from the system cd by holding c-key, option/c-key, command/option/shift/delete. I zapped the PRAM, tried holding any key for that matter, without any respond. The only respond I've got was when I held down option-key by itself. This brought me to the screen with a padlock symbol and password field. However, I had no luck with keying the password in. At this point I don't care if I loose any data on this machine (everything is backed-up) I just would like to make it run. Clean install, perhaps.

Sep 25, 2010I turned it on today and it gave me a box around a little world, then it gave me the folder with a question mark and gave me the apple logo after that and booted into mac os x. It's really bothering me, is my machine dieing? Or is this just a software issue. A software issue, I can definitely handle if its just a reinstall of mac os x but if its the hard drive connection or logic board then my powerbook is a nice paperweight . Can anyone tell me why it did this and what I should do to fix it? I mean, it works but those symbols at the beginning I know aren't good to see. I recently installed onyx for OS X tiger and ran a few of the operations but I have restarted the computer flawlessly since then.

Jun 3, 2012For several weeks I've lost internet connection on my iMac every day or so; the wifi icon changes to show a ! and is otherwise greyed out. My internet connection is via a relatively new Time Capsule (2011) which has an ethernet cable connecting it to my Sky broadband router. I moved to this new Sky broadband router in early Jan 2012 (changing to Sky as a Broadband provider) and it works nicely as a router. My iPhone, iPad, AppleTV and a range of other devices (including an Apple Airport Express connected to a Sky TV HD box to enable it to download movies) have continued to work on the internet without problems.
The IP address of the iMac (27 inch quad core i7, 8 GB RAM, fully up to date on Lion) disappears from the Network settings when the problem arises but the connection of the iMac to the wifi (and backing up to the Time Capsule) still works. I can even use a VNC app on the iPad to connect to the iMac on the same wifi LAN when the IP address has gone and the ! is showing in the wifi icon on the menu bar. To get reconnected to the internet, I just restarted the iMac and it was then back accessing the web nicely. Eventually the iMac would not connect to the internet at all. It would momentarily get an IP address from the router and then lose it again. I then tried taking the iMac to the Apple Store.
Various diagnostics run in store at Genius Bar and during the week and the problem (using the same account) was not replicated. On its return home, it was still not working on the internet. I then tried booting into 'safe mode'. This enabled a stable and reliable connection to the internet! After several days in this mode, I re-installed Lion and booted into normal mode again. The problem returned and has been with the iMac since. However, at least a restart of the iMac gets it straight back on to the internet again. I suspect some sort of corrupted network preference file or the like. But where? The disconnection from the internet can happen any time of day; for example it happened while typing this message but more often than not it happens when the computer is unattended.

Nov 13, 2009When I log onto my MAIL icon it just bounces once and does not open. Same goes for Safari HOWEVER the Firefox, Excel, Word icons open. I have tried re-booting but no luck. As a back up I am using Entourage for my email but prefer to use MAIL, as well would like to use Safari again! What do I need to do to get these working again?

Oct 21, 2010The current behavior of the Finder icon in the dock first brings Finder windows currently open into focus. I often wish I could click the Finder icon, and have a new window open. However if each time it was clicked, it brought current windows to focus, but then also created a new window, this would be annoying. So how about this:
If the Finder isn't in focus, one click will bring it into focus. The next click, assuming now that the Finder is focused, creates a new Finder window. Also, it could even be conceived that a double click of the Finder icon, when out of focus, would both bring current windows to focus, and then create a new window directly.

Jun 22, 2014When I click on the finder icon and the trash icon in the dock, nothing happens. Even when I right click and press New Finder Window, nothing happens. If I want to upload a file, a window doesn't pop up for me to be able to access my files. When I edit a Pages document, it somehow says it is saved, but doesn't tell me where.
On my desktop I have some files and folders, the images and other files open but not folders. With the trash I am somehow able to right click it and empty the trash can. I have restarted my Macbook Pro 13inch running OS X Mavericks Version 10.9.3 several times and it still doesn't work. I even tried booting in safe mode but finder still doesn't work.

May 14, 2012all of a sudden i can't add any bookmarks anymore using the plus sign next to URL. searched many websites which offer adequate solutions to fix but i cannot follow as folders/files can't seem to be found. I even had trouble finding the safari folder as it don't exist under library- may be clueless but i seem to have 2 folders for library: one under macintosh hd, the other under the system folder. also can't find the bookmarks.plist file either using spotlight. some sites say locate the com.apple.safari file, which seems to be missing in either cache folders, example of what is there is com.apple.components2.localcache.audiocomponents etc.... its frustrating especially when you find a good website to add to an already organised bookmarks folder.Â
NOTE- i did find safari folder via spotlight but within it was 2 folders of bookmarks and history and both don't have the bookmarks.plist file and only endless "webbookmarks..."Â

Safari :: 5.7.1 Does Not Load Pdf Pages Anymore?
May 19, 2012I upgraded to Safari 5.7.1 and after that I cannot load pdf pages any longer. Prior to that version, pdf pages would load as usual in "Safari" format. Now, if I want to see the pages I need to control click the URL and ask for the pdf document to be copied in a folder. I can always go back to the previous version with Time Machine.
