Software :: Blinking Network Icon At First Then Question Mark With Mac Logo

Aug 9, 2006

When I start my iBook, I get blinking network icon for a while, then it turns into folder with blinking question mark alternating with mac logo. I know what it means; however, I have tried everything to correct it and no luck. I can't boot from the system cd by holding c-key, option/c-key, command/option/shift/delete. I zapped the PRAM, tried holding any key for that matter, without any respond. The only respond I've got was when I held down option-key by itself. This brought me to the screen with a padlock symbol and password field. However, I had no luck with keying the password in. At this point I don't care if I loose any data on this machine (everything is backed-up) I just would like to make it run. Clean install, perhaps.

OS X :: Blinking Question Mark On Folder Icon

Dec 23, 2007

My Mac just made my heart jump. When I rebooted, it just showed a blank grey screen for about 15 seconds. It then showed a folder with a blinking question mark. I had seen this before on iBooks at my school, and knew it wasn't a good sign. I held down the power button, and rebooted. This time, it started up without a hitch.

OS X :: Dreaded Blinking Question Mark - Only Sometimes

Aug 14, 2010

About once a month I have a problem where the machine won't boot and I get the blinking question mark icon on the screen. I've read lots (and lots) of posts about this, all which say that the hard drive is dead or something similar. Disk Utility and Drive Warrior sometimes see no disk and sometimes see a disk that reports a 0 byte capacity. The thing is, it has always come back. The typical pattern is that nothing I do seems to help. Eventually I've tried all the standard things (safe mode, pram reset, etc), rebooted it a bunch and then walk away for a few hours. Nothing seems to work immediately, but if I leave it alone it comes back. What gives? In case it matters I've got an iMac 20" (?), intel duo 2.8 GHz with a 500 GB WD drive. I used to think the problem might be heat related, but I recently had to leave the machine off for a week in this state and when I returned the problem persisted.

MacBook :: Getting Blinking Folder And Question Mark

Jul 29, 2009

My macbook is about two years old and recently have encountered problems. When I turn on the computer all I see is a blinking folder and question mark. I have tried putting in the install cd but it does not work. I try to reinstall mac os x but it tells me it could not be done. I have tried repairing the disk and numerous other things. I did not have anything truly important on the computer so I am not worried if I lose it.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Blinking Folder With Question Mark At Start Up?

Apr 2, 2012

When i turned on my iMac I was surprised to see a folder icon blinking as it was running fine before this. I didn't delete or install anything.

My DVD drive does not read properly so i am unable to boot from the installation disk, tried to boot using BootCD from Charles Soft that didnt work either. Even tried resetting PRAM/NVRAM, unplugged keyboard and LAN cable as well but still no luck.

Read many articles online regarding this issue and it seems that my hard disk must have crashed. I don't have backup of any files.

MacBook :: Hard Drive Gone - Blinking Folder With Question Mark?

May 20, 2009

I Don't have a lot of knowledge of computers so I apologize if any of this doesn't make sense. I have an exactly 2 year old White Macbook. To make it short....screen froze....restarted...eventually got blinking folder with question mark. Tried all the various ways/modes (safe, single, etc) to restart the computer and nothing. Read the macbook booklet and it said to enter the Mac OS X disk 1 and I did that. It eventually worked, the disk that is. Went to Disk Utility and tried to repair Mac OS X Install Disc 1 and get ERROR:No valid packages. In the column of choices there are 3 other options for me to click and repair. I don't know if these options are confidential and need to be kept private but I will omit some of the numbers/ letters. These are the other 3 options: GB Hitachi HTS....( this is what I get when I try to repair: Invalid B-tree node size Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit......also.. 1 HFS Volume checked .....Volume needs repair disk0s2 ......this option when I try to repair gives the same exact error as the one above. GB MATSHITA.... this option gives the same response as when I try to repair the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 ......ERROR:No valid packages. Also I tried to reinstall Mac OS X by following the installer and clicked English and then get to Select a destination volume to install the Mac OS X software and there are NO options available for me to click. I am so desperate right now.

MacBook Pro :: Does Not Recognize Internal HD - Blinking Question Mark On Start Up

Jul 1, 2014

My Mac stopped recognizing it's internal HD, (HD1), a few day's ago. There is a blinking question mark when starting up.

I have replaced it with an older HD,  HD(2) and this boots OK and works fine in my MacBookPro.

I have connected the HD(1) via USB, in a caddy, and it is recognized as an external disk.

I have removed, the older, HD(2) and used HD(1) as "start-up" disk, via Caddy with no internal HD fitted, ,  and it worked OK on all tasks.

I have reinstalled the offending HD(1) in the MacBookPro but it is, again, not recognized ??? and I am getting the Blinking Question Mark, as before.

Fortunately I had just backed up HD(1)

PowerPC :: Doesn't Boot Properly - Blinking Folder With Question Mark

Jul 6, 2009

I'm having an issue with my PowerBook G4. It wouldn't turn on at all before, so I installed another motherboard. Now it will power on, but it only shows this folder icon that blinks. I'm a complete n00b to macs. If this were a PC I would of fixed it by now. I need some help. I've tried the installation disk, but when I hold down the C key, it takes longer, but it just shows that folder again. When I hold down the Option key, it only gives me a reload button, and an arrow button, but no boot up options. Do you think it could be a problem with this other used motherboard? Or is it that I just didn't put it in right? I've double checked all the hardware, and it seems to be all connected. The keyboard lights up, and the trackpad works, and it makes the boot-up sound.

MacBook Pro :: Blinking Question Mark Folder (Already Replaced Hard Drive)

Apr 25, 2012

On Sunday night I found my macbook pro ("13, mid 2010, refurbished) in a frozen state a few seconds after waking it from sleep. So I did a forced restart and then my macbook wouldn't boot (blinking question mark folder). I troubleshooted with the OSX Install DVD on my own before taking it to the Genius Bar (disk utility & TDM could not find the hard drive), and we both came to the conclusion that I should install a new drive. So yesterday I bought a new drive, did a fresh OSX install and managed to migrate all of my info from my presumed damaged drive to the new one. Everything went smoothly and the computer was in working order all night. That is until this morning when I shut it down before bringing it to work. On my lunch break I decided to fire up my newly upgraded macbook only to find that it once again would not boot, still with the blinking question mark folder. I also tested to see if I have faulty RAM and it doesn't look like it (unless both sticks are fried).

Intel Mac :: Initially Froze With A Blinking Question Mark Screen Then HDD Is Dead?

Apr 28, 2012

My iMac's HDD is fried. The computer just froze so I decided to reboot it and was presented with that lovely blinking question mark folder. I tried it again (and every time since) I get the good old apple logo on the grey screen with the spinning loading thing, but it never progresses past that.I threw in my old Leopard install disc and it asks me where I want to install Leopard, but the HDD option never appears, nor does it in Disk Utility. So what do I do now? It's Sunday where I am (Melbourne, Australia).I'm not too sure if it's still covered under the AppleCare Protection Plan. Should I take it to an Apple store? I remember when my mouse broke I tried taking it there and they told me to take it to some authorised repair place. I'm not too excited about hefting the iMac to the shops only be told they can't

MacBook :: White Start Up Screen With Blinking Documents Folder Symbol With Question Mark

Apr 11, 2012

Just came back from the Genius Bar at Apple Amsterdam. Both iTunes and iPhoto had problems launching and libraries were not loading. Ruled out hardware problems so they tried installing OS Snow Leopard over my 10.5.8 in a way to keep my documents safe. All went well until halfway it said it couldn't install succesfully. Made a new appointment for in 3 days from now. They would then overwrite the current OS with the new one so i should go home and make sure to back up all my files in the meantime. Problem is that when i came home and started my laptop i got a blank/white screen with a blinking documents folder symbol with a question mark in it! Does anybody know what it means and will i be able to ever make a back up of my documents?

OS X :: Flashing Question Mark And Finder Logo On Startup?

Jun 26, 2010

Alright, so my uncle just gave me this old iMac, and whenever I start it up, it gives me this error logo of a flashing question mark and finder logo, inside a folder. The question mark and finder logo alternate. Yes, I have checked out the inside, and everything that is supposed to be there is there. I even switched out the hard drive with a working one, so that is not the problem. Yes, I have tried booting from the disc; it never lets me get past this error message. I have included a picture of the iMac, since I'm not exactly sure which model it is. I also don't know whether it's a version of Mac OS X, or 9, or 8, or whatever. Let me know if I missed anything,

MacBook :: Blank Screen/Blinking Folder Icon At Boot?

Sep 22, 2010

White MB about three years old. Was watching something on Hulu and HDD started making strange noises and screen froze. Forced reboot and only got white screen. Couldn't even get into single user mode. Got a new WD hard drive thinking it would fix the problem. Put in my backup of the Install Disk (lost the original like an idiot) but all it shows when I hold down the C key is a large blinking folder icon with a question mark on it. Still can't get into single user mode. I may have screwed up the backup of the Install Disk or am using the wrong DVD since I forgot to label it.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: WIFI EAP-TLS - Menu Bar Icon Is Now Constantly Blinking As If Connecting/searching?

Apr 3, 2012

My network uses WPA2 Enterprise EAP-TLS WIFI encryption, and I have a RADIUS server that handles this.  Client devices have a certificate and username that they send to authenticate to the network. I have an iPad, an iPhone, and a Windows 7 laptop computer that all currently connect perfectly fine to this network (so I am assuming that my problem is isolated my MacBook Pro).  My MacBook Pro (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3) worked fine up until about a week ago.  It would boot up and automatically connect to the network (I used the iPhone Configuration utility to create a .mobileconfig for this).

Now, however, instead of the WIFI menubar icon staying solid after connecting, my MacBook will "connect" to the network, and have a status of "Authenticating..." (System Preferences > Network).  I can still connect to the network, internet, etc., but the menubar icon is now constantly blinking as if connecting/searching (though when I click on it there is a checkmark next to my network), and I am continually prompted every 5-10 minutes to select a certificate and username for connecting to the network by the Mac OS (even though I click "Save this information").  If I don't enter the information in the prompt, I am not connected anymore.  This did not happen before. Is there something wrong with the mobileconfig I used for the network profile (I installed it using a normal user account; should I have used the administrator account for this?)? Is there something wrong with the items in my keychain?

Hardware :: Express Past The Reach Of The Home Network It Just Freezes In The Yellow Blinking

Aug 14, 2009

I got an Airport express and for the first couple of months i've been fin and learning how to use it.

I set it up so i have 2 profile settings....

one of them is my home setting that takes the express and connects it to my currently working network and extends it wirelessly.

the second setting takes it and disables internet and sets up a wireless network to connect and pay air tunes.

Now every time i take the express past the reach of the home network it just freezes in the yellow blinking sate and wont let me find it with the airport utility.

Now i have the second profile set up for it to work, but the problem is that it wont let me connect to it to change it, so it just keeps blinking forever... untill i bring it back into the range of my home network.

Software :: Unable To Connect To Network - Network Icon Missing In Finder

Dec 5, 2006

I have a home network running 3 PC's(with XP) and 2 Macs (with Tiger OS X 10.4.8). Mysteriously one of my Macs(MacMini) refuses to show a Network icon in the Finder sidebar? I have used the Go > Network menu to try to get a Network icon, but this does work. Yesterday I did a scheduled Mac OS system update, and it seems that since then I have not been able to see/get a Network icon in my Finder.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? PS - I am able to use the old 'GO > Connect to Computer' method, then type in the smb://myOfficePc, and access shared files on other PCs on the network. So networking is configured properly on this MacMini.
