Sep 7, 2010I dropped my MacBook from a fairly low height the other day. Now when it boots up, the Flashing Folder-? Icon pops up. bummer. I've read around and tried everything I can find to try. I've read over posts such as: [URL]. Nothing works. My only problem is that I can't get it to boot the DVD startup disk at all. Everything I try ends with the disk being kicked out of the drive, or spinning for a while and then doing nothing.

Dec 23, 2007My Mac just made my heart jump. When I rebooted, it just showed a blank grey screen for about 15 seconds. It then showed a folder with a blinking question mark. I had seen this before on iBooks at my school, and knew it wasn't a good sign. I held down the power button, and rebooted. This time, it started up without a hitch.

Power Mac G5 :: Hard Drive Icon Appear With Flashing Question Mark
Dec 18, 2007Yesterday my G5 (Dual G5 2 Gig, 10.4.1 OS) hung up while running illustrator 7, did an escape quit. Now the computer will not restart - a hard drive icon appeared with a flashing question mark. Ran the apple restore disk and the all hard ware pieces checked out fine. When I tried to reinstall the OS it does not open past the install icon. Startup utility does not find the one and only hard drive.

Aug 9, 2006When I start my iBook, I get blinking network icon for a while, then it turns into folder with blinking question mark alternating with mac logo. I know what it means; however, I have tried everything to correct it and no luck. I can't boot from the system cd by holding c-key, option/c-key, command/option/shift/delete. I zapped the PRAM, tried holding any key for that matter, without any respond. The only respond I've got was when I held down option-key by itself. This brought me to the screen with a padlock symbol and password field. However, I had no luck with keying the password in. At this point I don't care if I loose any data on this machine (everything is backed-up) I just would like to make it run. Clean install, perhaps.

Sep 25, 2010I turned it on today and it gave me a box around a little world, then it gave me the folder with a question mark and gave me the apple logo after that and booted into mac os x. It's really bothering me, is my machine dieing? Or is this just a software issue. A software issue, I can definitely handle if its just a reinstall of mac os x but if its the hard drive connection or logic board then my powerbook is a nice paperweight . Can anyone tell me why it did this and what I should do to fix it? I mean, it works but those symbols at the beginning I know aren't good to see. I recently installed onyx for OS X tiger and ran a few of the operations but I have restarted the computer flawlessly since then.

Jun 3, 2012For several weeks I've lost internet connection on my iMac every day or so; the wifi icon changes to show a ! and is otherwise greyed out. My internet connection is via a relatively new Time Capsule (2011) which has an ethernet cable connecting it to my Sky broadband router. I moved to this new Sky broadband router in early Jan 2012 (changing to Sky as a Broadband provider) and it works nicely as a router. My iPhone, iPad, AppleTV and a range of other devices (including an Apple Airport Express connected to a Sky TV HD box to enable it to download movies) have continued to work on the internet without problems.
The IP address of the iMac (27 inch quad core i7, 8 GB RAM, fully up to date on Lion) disappears from the Network settings when the problem arises but the connection of the iMac to the wifi (and backing up to the Time Capsule) still works. I can even use a VNC app on the iPad to connect to the iMac on the same wifi LAN when the IP address has gone and the ! is showing in the wifi icon on the menu bar. To get reconnected to the internet, I just restarted the iMac and it was then back accessing the web nicely. Eventually the iMac would not connect to the internet at all. It would momentarily get an IP address from the router and then lose it again. I then tried taking the iMac to the Apple Store.
Various diagnostics run in store at Genius Bar and during the week and the problem (using the same account) was not replicated. On its return home, it was still not working on the internet. I then tried booting into 'safe mode'. This enabled a stable and reliable connection to the internet! After several days in this mode, I re-installed Lion and booted into normal mode again. The problem returned and has been with the iMac since. However, at least a restart of the iMac gets it straight back on to the internet again. I suspect some sort of corrupted network preference file or the like. But where? The disconnection from the internet can happen any time of day; for example it happened while typing this message but more often than not it happens when the computer is unattended.

May 30, 2008Every single time I open Photo booth the damn thing crashes. When I try to open it the second time, it usually opens fine. (Sometimes freezes). It's always the first time I try to open it and the damn thing crashes. It's driving me nuts.

Mar 26, 2009I recently purchased a used Macbook 13" for my daughter. It is less than one year old. She wanted all of her user data from our family computer to be transferred to the new machine. I transferred her user file from our 2005 iMac G5 that does NOT have a camera (don't know if this is relevant) through firewire and the migration assistant process. Both machines were running the latest Leopard and were both up to date.
The transfer went perfectly and was even successful in getting rid of the prior owner's name that would show up all over the place. The one thing that my daughter found is that the Photo Booth app would take pictures but not save them in the tray. It just would not work. I read some threads and dropped the preferences file for the app and rebooted the machine to no avail. I did find that Photo Booth would work in the Root or Guest accounts, just not in the account that was transferred from the old machine. Last night she was taking photos and videos using the guest account. They all saved in the tray, but when she went to log out a warning came up saying that logging out would cause all data to be lost. The pictures were all gone.
I received a response already from a tech on this site. His advice was to run a series of commands in my "terminal" none of which worked. I am new to this site and did not know how to get back to him. I decide to try again. It is really weird, as this is the only thing that is not working properly.

MacBook Pro :: All Photobooth Pictures Scattered And Videos Gone?
Jun 6, 2012I opened photo booth and all of my pictures were gone. I thought it might have been a glitch so I restarted it photo booth and my macbook and they were still gone. So I search for "photo on" with spotlight and I find most of them in thumbnail sized. I managed to find some in the original sizes and when I tried putting them back into the photo booths "photos" folder and they still wouldn't show up. None of my video files are showing up.. except one that's in an un-openable format.
Only a few of the pictures I found were a decent size and some of them were possibly in the iphoto folder (even though they're not showing up). Some of my pictures are just outright gone. This isn't acceptable! Also I haven't moved any of my pictures, aside from copying a few to my desktop a few days ago, I've done nothing with them. I need to restore them and I'm having a hard time figuring this out. I haven't backed up my macbook in months.

I recently opened up my photo booth and noticed that the display flashes very quickly into different lightings/colors. It's very strange because the ceiling fan isn't on, and my MBP is sitting still. I've never seen this issue on anyone else's MBP either. I'm leaving for college very soon and don't want to leave unhappy with my MBP. If I visit the genius bar, will they give me a replacement with my one-year warranty?
