A eMac, and I want to be able to access the internet wirelessly with it.it doesn't have an airport card and eMacs are notoriously tough to upgrade.
Would a USB wifi receiver work in place of an Airport card?
The eMac only has USB 1.1. How much will that effect speed if I go with this solution?
Does iMac has wifi receiver ? I ask this because i didn't see any while comparying it to mac mini
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running a PowerBook G4 15" FW800 (running 10.4.11) which has only ever connected to the internet via an Orinoco WiFi card, and I'm trying to upgrade it to a better card whose signals aren't stopped by a couple inches of walls. So I bought an AirPort Extreme card on Ebay and hooked it up, but it's not working right. I'm hoping for some advice. Note that I don't have an AirPort base station; I have a Linksys router, which the Orinoco card was able to communicate with fine. Anyway, I got the AirPort Extreme card (no software CD included), and hooked it up as demonstrated in this video. My laptop already had some AirPort software on it, which refused to acknowledge the existence of the card.
I then I installed the software available here, which seemed to overwrite the previous set of software; I also ran Software Update. No matter what, the laptop refused to acknowledge the existence of the card. Applications->AirPort Utility, AirPort Admin Utility, and AirPort Disk Utility all turn up blanks. AirPort Utility, for example, just says it's "unable to find any Apple wireless devices". The software that was there before I installed the software linked to above gave a different message. if I do get the laptop to recognize the card, will I even be able to connect to the Linksys without an AirPort base station or something?
PowerBook G4, 1.5ghz, 2gb ram, 80gb HD, Superdrive. It shows I have the AirPort Extreme card installed. Problem, I get poor (slow performance on my home wifi) and in some areas I get no signal or drop the signal. On my PC laptops I get good signal and fairly good speed. Using a Linksys wirless 2.4ghz wireless G router. Could my wireless card need replacing? If I get a wireless N router will the airport extreme card pull the N?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI've had this computer for many years and it has been trouble free. Recently, however, it's been losing the wifi signal. It'll keep it for a while, but then I'll see it fluctuate and eventually die. I can't seem to bring it back to life. I have an iPhone, apple tv and a laptop that all seem to have no trouble pickng up the wifi signal. Would this be a software or hardware issue? Could my airport card be dying? If so, is it fixable?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Mac Mini loses connection with my Onkyo receiver NR-609 after turning off the receiver then back on. The only way to reistablish the connection is to unplug then replug the HDMI cable to the Mac Mini. There's no effect if I unplug then replug the HDMI to the receiver.

I currently own a G4 PowerBook running OS X 10.2.8 (archaic, I know) which I use as a word processor. I want to set it up to recieve my friend's 802.11 wireless signal (with his permission), which is sent out by a base station tied to a Windows machine. Two questions I have:
First, will an Apple PowerBook and Airport card be able to receive a signal from a Windows machine (I don't see why not, but...)?
Secondly, I seem to only be able to find the AirPort Extreme card on the Apple Store. Will the Extreme card plug and play with my notebook, or not? Are there any good third-party cards that I can buy that will work well if not?
I just purcahsed an AppleTv and the Seagate FreeAgent 500GB External HD. I wanted to know if I could transfer my iTunes library to my external drive over Airport Extreme if the Seagate is attached via USB Hub?
I was also wondering if I did this would my library will be recognized by my Powerbook and AppleTV. Also when I sync iPods, iPhones and the like to my powerbook will they sync from the Seagate attached to the extreme?
I also plan on adding an iMac in October. Will it also be able to access the library from the Airport Extrene base station?
I was looking at getting a new Airport Extreme base but I'm not sure if it will work with my 15" G4 Powerbook at all? I currently have a Linksys WRT54G which is OK but is such a pain to set up when it does happen to crash once in a while too. Besides, I don't think I'm getting the most powerful signal I can get too. Besides saying that the new wireless "N" has 5 times more speed than the wireless "G", is it worth it to switch over from a linksys to the Airport Extreme?

However, it can not find any wireless networks automatically. I tried entering the name of my network manually, but it says "There was an error joining the AirPort network "NameofNetwork"." "Try again" "OK" The router doesn't have any security on it and it is compatible with 802.11b. I bought this iBook from a friend who says he could never get an airport card he bought a while back to work either.

Airport would show no connection but would list my network along with others in my building. If I tried to connect with my WPA password it would just time out. At this time I was running Leopard.
Since then I've done a few things.Tried running the Netgear router with no encryption at all (same thing happens). Will lose connection and then time out trying to connect
I've tried the MacBook in a coffee shop with wifi access and at my parents (same NetGear router) and at my new apartment with a horrible Orange Livebox.
Taken the MacBook in to see the genius bar at Glasgow Apple store. Worked fine for them, but I explained it was intermittent but we could not force it to fail. I'm sure if it ran for an hour it would.
At present if I have the MacBook in the living room (where the Livebox router is situated) its fine and wont drop connection. If I walk some 5m to my bedroom it will work for approximately half and hour and then lose it. A few days ago I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade and installed it last night. MacBook runs a hell of a lot faster (yay!) but moving it away from the router and its dead as disco in half an hour.
So to clarify, the MacBook has been tested on 4 wifi networks/ locus with same issue. iPhone, Xbox 360 and PS3 all have no issues with dropping connection no matter where they are in the apartment.
Apartment is a new build and its walls are not made out of lead or kryptonite. Is this a hardware issue rather than software? When updating to Snow Leopard it was an update to the existing OS of Leopard not a clean install.

I have DSL service. I have an iPod Touch and an iPad 1 that I'm trying to connect. I just upgraded both iDevices to iOS5. I've been having trouble keeping an internet connection live for them, but now I can't even get the wi-fi to connect.

I just installed a new AirPort card into my 2006 Mac Pro and it showed up just fine and I was looking forward to getting it online without using iPhone-tethering. BUT, I just can't get it to find any networks? What might be the problem? I've googled, rebooted, updated my drivers etc etc.

I'm not sure what settings to play around with. Could it be the channel? In general, is there a better channel to select?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an iMac and my wifi keeps changing to my neighbours network called "BTFON" which I believe is some kind of BT network/Zone which gives me a login page asking me to pay to use it. I keep having to manually change it back to mine. In system preferences I have ticked the box marked 'Ask to join new networks' but it never does ask me, just joins automatically, for no reason i can think of. I'm using OSX version 10.5.8.

I have tried Customer service over at Amazon but sadly, no reply as of yet. It seems that the Kindle wont connect to "enterprise or peer-to-peer networks". So everytime, I enable sharing and my network shows up - it either wont accept the password or it tells me that "Kindle does not currently connect to enterprise or peer-to-peer networks"

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I have the 2010 White Unibody 2.4Ghz Macbook and the airport works perfectly fine whether I am at home, the library, school, etc. The problem I am having with it is when I am at home and using the airport, and my iPhone is also connected to the same network, the wifi will work on my iPhone but will stop working on my Macbook. It still shows I am connected but it will not connect to any webpages. As soon as I turn off the Wifi on my iPhone and refresh the page on my Macbook, it will load. Is there anything I can do to fix this. By the way, My Toshiba laptop has no problem with using Wifi the same time my iPhone is connected to it, my Macbook is the only one having problems.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a NetGear Router, locked to a Cable Modem from my ISP, I use a WPA setup with Tkip. I have had this enabled since last November. Now for some reason today, the MacBook will NOT CONNECT, it asks for a WPA code, even when I enter the code it comes up "connection timeout"
I have rebooted the entire network, and while everything else connects the MacBook refuses point blank to even attempt, with the connection timeout message showing within seconds of an attempt.
I cannot restore due to GB's of Data being on the HD and no Mac compatible external available.
My MBP 3,1 (early 2008?) normally just connects to my WLAN when I start it up but very occasionally it connects to a nearby WiFi Hotspot. When it does, turning Airport off then on again sometimes gets it to connect to my WLAN but sometimes it just keeps re-connecting the the hotspot. The only solution - and it works every time - is to reboot. But rebooting seems such a Windows thing to have to do.
Does Airport "prioritize" its choice of connection, e.g. first tries to connect to the last WLAN it was connected to? One other thing. If I go into Network Prefs and click the Advanced button, I see my WLAN there but there seems to be no way to tell it to connect to that particular WLAN - the equivalent dialogue in Windows for example has a Connect button so you can select a WLAN and hit connect to force it to (try to) connect to that one, but there's no Connect button in OS X. In case it's important, I don't broadcast the SSID on my WLAN.
