PowerPC :: Slow Performance On Home WiFi With AirPort Extreme

Nov 24, 2007

PowerBook G4, 1.5ghz, 2gb ram, 80gb HD, Superdrive. It shows I have the AirPort Extreme card installed. Problem, I get poor (slow performance on my home wifi) and in some areas I get no signal or drop the signal. On my PC laptops I get good signal and fairly good speed. Using a Linksys wirless 2.4ghz wireless G router. Could my wireless card need replacing? If I get a wireless N router will the airport extreme card pull the N?

Hardware :: (Internal WiFi Card) Airport Extreme In MacPro Is Slow?

Dec 9, 2008

I recently had WiFi installed on my MacPro 2006. It is not a PCI card, it is wired to the board (I had to take the box in to a registered dealer have this installed).

I have a very weak signal and can't even open a webpage. It's attempts to load, but fails intermittently.

I can connect to my NAS or other network shares, but they are very, very slow.

I am no more than about 15 meters from the Timecapsule, two rooms away.

My Macbook has a perfect signal (very strong) at the same spot and operates as if I were right next to wireless router (1TB Timecapsule). I also have a Dell laptop that has a very strong connection.

The WiFi in the MacPro is as good as useless. I cannot move the router as it runs off a cable modem and I only have one cable connection in the apartment. I also don't want to have ethernet cables running all over the place.

MacBook Air :: 2012 11" Slow On 5Ghz Airport Extreme Wifi Network?

Jun 29, 2012

I'm encountering an issue with a new Macbook Air and would grateful for any insights. I have an Airport Extreme (latest model, 5th gen, A1408) based network (all updates applied). I have a new 2012 MacBook Air (11") that I noticed was suffering from VERY slow wifi speeds. After looking into it, I realized that if I used the configuration utility to separately name the 5GHz network and connect to wifi on the 2.4 Ghz network, the speed radically improved.

To illustrate, using speedtest.net, I saw download speeds of 35-38 Mb/s using the 2.4 Ghz network. This drops to 2-3 Mb/s when using the 5 Ghz network. The Macbook Air is showing an RSSI value of -56 when connected via 5 GHz and -51 when connected via 2.4 Ghz.

Other deivces in the home have normal connection speeds on the 5 GHz network, as does a previous generation, 2011 MacBook Air.A friend's also new, 2012  11" MacBook Air exhibits the same symptoms, so the issue is not specific to my unit.

Info:
MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Hardware :: Improving Home WiFi Network Performance

Sep 5, 2010

My home WiFi network is currently very unstable. I'm working to improve it and looking for a little advice. This is a little long but I'm trying to provide as much relevant info as possible. First, I have Comcast cable internet performance package (6mbps). My internet speeds vary from about 3-10mbps. I use the Comcast provided cable modem (rented). From the cable modem I run a cable directly into an Airport Express 802.11b/g to create my home wifi network. I have a usb printer attached to the Airport Express for network printing. I have a second Airport Express on the other side of the house used to expand the network and pump music into my home stereo via air tunes.

I use my network for general internet surfing, airtunes streaming to my home stereo, and itunes and bittorrent downloading. No gaming or other speed intensive applications especially within the home network. I have two problems - the internet drops out and requires a reset very often - at least once a day and the airtunes is very unstable. For the internet problem, I thought it was the Comcast internet but I've checked the quality of the cable signal and removed all unnecessary splitters, etc and it still happens. I think the problem is my Airport express. For the Airtunes problem, this clearly seems to be an Airport express problem. I'm thinking of going to a Linksys WRT54GL 802.11b/g as my primary wireless router and purchasing a cable modem (to save money in the long run over renting.)

Here are my questions:
1) Based on my usage and my current Comcast internet package, my understanding is that 802.11b/g is fine for me. Is this correct? I don't think I need or could benefit from the 300mbps speed of a N network.
2) Can I still use the airport express for airtunes and printing on the Linksys WRT54GL 802.11b/g network?
3) Regarding the cable modem, is there any advantage to getting a more expensive DOCSIS 3.0 modem such as Motorola SURFboard SB6120? I've read that some people see significant improvements in their speed even if they have a slower internet service.

Feb 23, 2010

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Home VPN Setup

Nov 6, 2007

I'm traveling for the next 3 months overseas and I wanted to setup some sort of VPN that would allow me to access my home macs over the internet from my Macbook Pro. I've searched for some setup instructions over the net and can't find anything. If someone can help me out with step by step instructions I'd appreciate it. I have and Airport Extreme with a couple of MacPros and external hard drives attached. Having access to them while away will keep me in touch with things I may need at home while away. I'm running Leopard 10.5 on all machines.

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Use Out Of My Home Network

Jun 30, 2010

I want to test the range of an AE base station at a theatre that I'm installing wi-fi for. I'm wi-fi challenged, so the AE was my choice when setting up my home network. I may need to extend the theatre's network with an Airport Express, but want to test the range of it with my AE base station from home. (Got that?) [oh, and it's a theatre I work for and am installing all sorts of fun goodies. I'm good with stuff but wifi makes me corky thatcher. -ed]Since I'm wi-fi challenged, will it totally mess up my settings on my home network if I try to use it at the theatre? If it will, then I'll just buy a fresh one for the theatre and see after that if I need an express. I'd just like to run to the apple store once, not twice

Is it possible to access my airport extreme base station at home from somewhere else? I have an external hard drive connected to it and would like to be able to access from work or on the go. If I can do this will it be secure and safe from other users accessing it? I've googled info on this and have come up pretty empty. I'm running a MBP 2.4 with OSX 10.6.4.

OS X Yosemite :: Slow WiFi On Home Network

Nov 30, 2014

I've been having Wi-Fi issues with Yosemite (both 10.10 and 10.10.1), but only on my home network. All other wi-fi connections have been strong/reliable. I also ran the Yosemite beta from July (I think) until the full release, but did not have any similar issues with wi-fi.

Here are my hardware specs:

Plus a 500gb hard drive.

Here's the info on my computer's wi-fi card, and my wi-fi network itself. Router is a Linksys E1000 (which is ancient, I know, but I can't afford a 5.0GHz router right now and that seems like the only worthwhile upgrade).

Info:
MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

OS X :: Getting AirPort Extreme Card To Work Via WiFi

Mar 30, 2010

I'm running a PowerBook G4 15" FW800 (running 10.4.11) which has only ever connected to the internet via an Orinoco WiFi card, and I'm trying to upgrade it to a better card whose signals aren't stopped by a couple inches of walls. So I bought an AirPort Extreme card on Ebay and hooked it up, but it's not working right. I'm hoping for some advice. Note that I don't have an AirPort base station; I have a Linksys router, which the Orinoco card was able to communicate with fine. Anyway, I got the AirPort Extreme card (no software CD included), and hooked it up as demonstrated in this video. My laptop already had some AirPort software on it, which refused to acknowledge the existence of the card.

I then I installed the software available here, which seemed to overwrite the previous set of software; I also ran Software Update. No matter what, the laptop refused to acknowledge the existence of the card. Applications->AirPort Utility, AirPort Admin Utility, and AirPort Disk Utility all turn up blanks. AirPort Utility, for example, just says it's "unable to find any Apple wireless devices". The software that was there before I installed the software linked to above gave a different message. if I do get the laptop to recognize the card, will I even be able to connect to the Linksys without an AirPort base station or something?

Hardware :: Running AirPort Express On G And Extreme WiFi On N?

Jan 12, 2010

So I have an airport extreme. I am planning on getting an airport express, to use exclusively for airtunes. I have a Palm Pre (it's WiFi is only b/g not N). If I use the Palm Pre on my airport extreme, it lowers my wifi connection to G speeds as opposed to N. Can I make the airport express run on G only but still extend the extreme's wifi (running on N)?

Hardware :: AirPort Extreme Keeps Switching Mac To Neighbors WiFi

Bought my first Mac product two days ago and I'm very happy with my 13 inch MacBook Pro. It worked well on my Netgear wireless for one day then all of a sudden it wouldnt let me get online. However, my Ipod Touch and my PC remained online.

Anyways, my Netgear was about 4 years old so I decided to get an Airport Extreme. I set it up and it worked like a charm however, every so often, I'll notice that I'm on a neighbor's wireless instead of my account.

Hardware :: Why Is Airport Extreme So Slow

Nov 12, 2009

I bought the new airport extreme this week from the apple store, but after doing some performance testing I must say that I'm disappointed by the performance of the 5Ghz connection.

I expected to see a significant performance improvement when using the 5Ghz 802.11n connection compared to using 2,4Ghz 802.11n. But ... it turns out that 5Ghz was slower (!) than the 2,4Ghz connection ... 50% slower

I didn't expect that to happen ... does anyone have an explanation for this?

My measurements for copying 466MB between two computers (macbook pro 2007 and imac 2007, both with snow leopard 10.6.2):

setting mbp: 2.4 GHz / 802.11n
setting imac: 2.4 GHz / 802.11n
=> copy from mbp to imac: 2:02 minutes

setting mbp: 5.0 GHz / 802.11n
setting imac: 5.0 GHz / 802.11n
=> copy from mbp to imac: 2:59 minutes

Hardware :: Way To Switch Off Airport Extreme Or Time Capsule Wifi?

Nov 26, 2010

Is there a way, in the settings, to turn off the Time Capsule's Airport wifi? I've been looking at the "Apple Airport Networks" and the "Designing Airport Networks" manuals and haven't found an On/Off setting similar to the MBP's Airport On/Off. I live in a high-rise, with a lot of wifi networks, and would like to configure the Time Capsule via wired LAN with wifi off, until it is secured with WPA2 encryption, and MAC address filtering. Also, I will probably be using the gigabit LAN connection most of the time, when at my desk.

OS X :: Hideously Slow Web-browsing With Airport Extreme?

Jan 25, 2008

I recently replaced my old Linksys router with an Airport Extreme Base Station. And as soon as I did, I began to experience hideously slow web browsing, with pages often taking minutes to load.

I ran various speedtests, but they were all normal.

The problem is browser independent (Safari, Firefox even tried old Camino), and was not fixed by clearing caches, cookies, etc...

After searching the forums and reading about other peoples' similar experiences, I disabled ip6 on my computer (MacPro - 10.4.5), but that didn't help.

I did a hard reset on the router, and on the cable modem. I updated the firmware on the AEBS. No differences. So I reinstalled my old linksys and everything's back to normal (except the wireless isn't as good and it can't seem to handle video chatting in iChat, which the AEBS does fine, so I want to get the AEBS working).

Hardware :: Just Plug An Airport Express Into Ethernet Point - Second Wifi On Home Network

May 19, 2010

Our wireless router (some standard linksys one) is downstairs. Wireless is mostly used down there so need strongest signal. Then it's plugged into an ethernet point, which goes up to the loft in a box, where it feeds into a 16-port switch, then back out to ethernet points in each room of the house. (recently renovated the house and ran Cat-5e everywhere.)Currently I have to connect via the ethernet point in my room with a network cable as I can't pick up the wireless signal. Which sucks a bit, being tied down when on a macbook pro.Could I just plug an Airport Express into the ethernet point in my room and set it up as a second wireless point, which I can use in my room? Or is that not what it's for?

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Write To USB Hard Drive - Slow?

Admittedly new to the world of wireless networking. Have my 1TB LaCie USB hard drive plugged into my AirPort Extreme. I had high hopes of keeping my iPhoto and iTunes libraries on this hard drive for access downstairs with my MacBook. Got it all setup tonight, and attempted to put a 1.5GB file from my MacBook on the hard drive. According to Finder it was going to take 8 hours to complete the transfer! Does this sound right? I realize USB is slow, but I didn't think that slow. The Belkin-N300 router I had before was faster than this on the USB sharing side.

Hardware :: Using Slow Internet: AirPort Extreme Behind DSL Modem/router

Jan 27, 2009

I've just moved and have had to switch ISPs. I have DSL service and the only modem option my ISP provides is an all-in-one modem/Wi-Fi router. I have an AirPort Extreme that I would like to use, but with this setup, unfortunately, I have to put it behind the modem/router.

I've used the AirPort Extreme both wirelessly and via Ethernet, and it is noticeably slow in connecting to Web sites. My browser often gets stuck on "Looking up [URL]" or "Connecting to [URL]" when it's plugged into the AE via Ethernet. When I plug directly into the DSL modem/router, sites are connected to and loaded immediately. The problem only exists when plugged into the AE. (Strangely, speed tests show that the AE downloads at nearly the same speed as the DSL modem/router, but this doesn't account for the noticeable delay in connecting to and the initial loading of Web pages).
