PowerPC :: Display Error When Hooking Up Powerbook To External Monitor?

Mar 7, 2009

irst off, according to mac tracker the Powerbook I have is the Powerbook G4 15 inch FW-800. I am running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6

Alright. About one week ago, I hooked up the powerbook to a 19 inch external LCD monitor with a DVI to VGA convertor, and all was well. It found my supported resolution and everything, worked straight away, etc.

Fast forward to today, at about 2pm (4 hours ago) I was using the computer and everything was working fine, but I had left it on for a few days so I shut it off when I was about to take a nap. I wake up from said nap about 20 minutes ago, turn on my Mac and my external display is only showing up at 800x600. I have no idea how this could have happened. This would not be an issue if my monitor's native resolution of 1440x900 were on the massive list of resolutions to chose from, but alas it is not.

PowerPC :: PowerBook Wakes Up With Closed Lid?

Jul 1, 2009

I just started having this issue where when i close my powerbook lid to put it to sleep, it'll fall asleep (but takes longer than usual) and then 5 seconds after it falls asleep it'll wake up.
and then i'll open it and sometimes it'll continue to be awake, but sometimes it'll go back to sleep...

I've reset the PMU and the nvram. i've also created a test user account and i have the same issue there so it seems like it's a hardware issue... which really sucks.

does anyone have any suggestions? it seems like whatever makes the powerbook realize it's closed is broken. hopefully that's a part that's easy to replace?

Hardware :: Powerbook With Broken Monitor - Force Boot To External Monitor?

Jan 31, 2010

I have a G4 powerbook with an LCD that only displays the top 25% of the screen. I've been using an external monitor with it just fine. Today, I reinstalled the OS and ran into a problem. The main OSX startup menu (you know, where it asks for your location, timezone, personal info, etc) is prompting me for information, and I can't see the forms to fill them in! The external monitor defaults to "extended" as opposed to "mirrored", and the forms are embedded, meaning I can't drag them over to my external monitor. Obviously, if I can't fill out these forms and get to the desktop, the laptop is completely useless.

Does anyone know how to force the external monitor to be "mirrored" from startup? Is there a keycommand?

MacBook Pro :: External Monitor Attached And Display Closed

Nov 30, 2009

I typed Mac Help about "to operate the portable computer with an external monitor attached and the display closed. When I close the display of my Mac Book or MacBookPro, the external monitor such as my 50" Plasma monitor or video projector would go black. I read the Help and it said and required the USB Mouse and Keyboard to close the Macbook display and put computer sleep. My question is will the Apple blue tooth or wireless keyboard and mice will work with out using the USB? Has any one try that? I am not sure if I should buy wired or wireless to operate this.

MacBook Pro :: Audio And Video Via HDMI To External Monitor With Lid Closed

Sep 12, 2014

I would like to run a Macbook Pro Retina (2014) with the lid closed and all video and audio via HDMI routed to an external monitor (Samsung Syncmaster from 2010). Is this possible? When I try this, no sound is transferred to the external monitor and I cannot operate the Macbook Pro with the lid closed. As soon as I close the lid, it cuts the signal to the external screen.  I’ve tried looking for previous posts but they’re about MCP’s connecting via Thunderbolt or DVI.

PowerPC :: Booting Powerbook G4 Via External FW 800?

Jul 2, 2010

I am trying to do a clean install of OSX 10.5 on my old powerbook G4 15". I am using a 10.5 image file on my external. I partitioned the external using GUID, and restored the image file onto the external. (this method works when installing on intel macs). Unfortunately, I cannot boot 10.5 using this method on my powerbook. Is it because i am using a firewire 800 cable? Should I be booting it using a firewire 400? I know that PPC macs cannot boot using usb, so i am stumped.

PowerPC :: How To Boot Powerbook From External Drive

PowerPC :: Using External Monitors With 15 Inch Titanium Powerbook

Feb 6, 2007

I've got a 15in Titanium Powerbook which I've had for about 4 years and can't see any reason to change it. I'm running OSX 10.3.9, 867Mhz processor, 1MB L3 Cache and 1GB SDRAM. I'd like to get an external monitor, at least 20in, maybe a 23in. I have a few questions though.

1) A fellow mac user said my PB might struggle to power the larger monitor due to the older graphics card. Is this true?

2) If yes... are there any upgrades I can do to allow me to buy an external monitor?

3) If its fine, any recommendations on monitor? I can afford the 23in Apple Cinema, but I don't like spending money for no benefit. How are the other options compared to the Apple? IE Dell/Samsung etc.

4) Anything else I should check/know before purchasing?

5) Any recommended UK sites? If I go Apple I'll go to Regents Street, but what about other options.

PowerPC :: External Hard Drive Setup For Mac Powerbook

Mar 26, 2007

A while back I bought an external hard drive for my PC, but then ditched the PC and decided to hook up the hard drive to my Mac. My External Hard Drive is a: 149.1 GB WDC WD 16 00JB-00GVA0 The problem is, I can access all the information but it will not let me do anything on the external harddrive (Like creating a file, copying and pasting a file on there, etc.) However, I can save Torrent downloads on the harddrive, but they do not show up on the actual external hard drive. But, when I press the "Find/Show directory" button in Bittorrent it does find the files. Is there something I need to do, Or is it just incompatible with my Mac?

PowerPC :: Powerbook Boot Failure Using Internal And External HD?

Jan 28, 2008

I have a 12" Powerbook G4 running 10.3.9 Panther. I am having problem booting my computer from a Firewire HD. I have done a search in the forum but cannot get a definite and/or successul solution. Forum moderators and my respected macrumor fellows, please feel free to direct me to a specific link if you find the questions redundant.Recently, I have had the HD making terrible noise and several days ago, the computer cannot boot at all. When I pushed the power button, the screen shows a folder in the middle with a Mac face and switches to a question mark back and forth. However, it just gets stuck at that stage. I suspected that I have a HD problem and wanted to boot from my clone Firewire HD. Unfortunately, the computer will not boot with Firewire HD either.

MacBook Pro :: Use Computer In Closed Clam-shell (display Closed) Mode With An External Display?

Jun 4, 2012

I have an 13" MBP that I ordered new in April, 2012. It is running Lion. I have an external monitor that is capable of 1440x900 resolution. I have an external keyboard and trackpad hooked up, and I like to close my MBP up and stick it in a BookArc. I want to be able to have the internal display disabled and to have the MBP only allow me to put windows on the external display, so long as the lid is closed. I also want to be sure that I am taking advantage of the resolutions available on my external monitor, which are higher than those supported by the internal display (specifically 1440x900).

This doesn't seem to work because I either have to allow the MBP to continue to draw my desktop across both screens (internal and external), OR use the "mirror displays" mode, which restricts my resolution of my external monitor. This means I either forgoe the additional resolution benefits of my external monitor, or I end up with windows that fall off-the-cliff, so to speak, because they are drawn in the portion of the desktop that would be shown on my internal display (which is closed).

I've read the community support pages on using the MBP with an external monitor, most relevantly, this page. It simply recommends using the "mirror displays" option. However, this option, as I mentioned above, doesn't allow me to make use of the additional resolution, and my external display looks bad. how to keep the 13" MBP in closed clamshell position, with the internal display disabled, and use my external monitor at resolutions higher than those allowed by the 13" MBP but which are available to my external monitor when not in "mirror displays" mode?

PowerPC :: Using IMac G5 Monitor With External Source?

Dec 9, 2006

I've been given (!) a G5 iMac which is practically brand new. It's only problem is that it suffers from the sudden shut off issue which seems to plague the G5 thanks to a faulty Power Supply and some caps on the mobo which get taken out by the PS. I've replace the power supply, but can't afford to get the mobo fixed, and since neither Apple nor any of the alternative operating system makers such as Linux will be supporting this system into the future, I figure that the hardware is essentially orphaned. I'd dearly like to use the screen though, as it's in great shape and is a beautiful display. So, my question is, can the internal screen be connected to an external source such as the video card of another computer? It would be great to use it for my music production machine. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. In the meantime I'm going to have a look around inside this beast and see what I can do.

PowerPC :: G4 + External Monitor + Firefox - Freeze?

May 4, 2007

I've got an old 20 inch blue and white CRT monitor connected to my last rev. Powerbook G4 with RAM upped to 1.5 gigs. I also have some peripherals connected to the usb hub on the monitor and all my ports on the powerbook itself are used up as well. Basically I'm running this mainly as a desktop. So, through the day while i'm working I get these blips on the screen randomly. they are horizontal blips almost as if I've just turned the monitor on. It is seriously about a millisecond. blink of an eye. anyways the freeze happens 99% of the time right after one of these blips AND while I'm holding the mouse button (usually manually scrolling in Firefox) it freezes for a second, i get the spinning beachball, but then it turns back to the arrow.

i can move the arrow all over the place, but i cannot do anything else. option+apple+esc doesn't do anything. the scaling effect doesn't work on the dock. i can't start or quit anything. if iTunes is playing, the music plays on, yet everything else is still frozen. so I open the lid and hold down the powerbutton until it shuts down. then i start up again. i have no problems when i use the powerbook without the external monitor. so is the monitor the culprit? Do i need to get a newer monitor? could it be a problem with usb 1.0 ports on the monitor and the usb 2.0 ports on the powerbook - a conflict of interest so to speak?
