PowerPC :: Reinstall OSX Without CD Drive?
Dec 23, 2010
So I recently decided to revive the ole Powerbook by replacing the hard drive, and I even found the original CD it came with. However, when I turn it on, the CD won't load into the slot, I think it's broken. I do, however, have an external hard drive and another mac, so I was wondering if there was another way of loading the OS onto there via firewire or something?

I recently found out that my powerbook G4 that i had a bottle of coke spilled on it is insured under my uni insurance policy, and am about to send it in for repair/replacement.
My issue is that i have used my parents/girlfriends/my own credit cards on the machine for online shopping and would like to absolutely securely delete everything from the machine, and reinstall osx on it before giving it in for repair, in order to have peace of mind that my detials are not going to be used elseware.
I have a mbp and dont use the powerbook so it wont inconvenience me, and its hard disk is backed up to an external also, so there is no problems there.
I just need to know what i will need to do this and how it can be done?

I recently bought a couple dozen eMacs at a school auction. I've got about 5 that are sellable but some are being a pain in the ass. All the eMacs have a version of 10.4 on their HD, but with school programs (which they were supposed to delete). So I decided to do an erase and install of 10.4.
Well, so far, about 5 eMacs have been freezing on me halfway through the install, at the start of disk 2 of 4. What will happen is the eMac will restart after Disk 1's install then ask for Disk 2. I'll put Disk 2 in and it will install 5% of the way then the computer will freeze up. The screen will show some random horizontal pixels like the video got messed up.
All the eMacs I've done installs on have at least 512 MB of RAM. The install disks are not scratched and work perfectly on other eMacs. This will just happen to a certain few. And they happen to be my best ones (>1 Ghz processors).

So, husband booted from OSX disc, wiped computer using disc utility, now it won't reinstall from the same disc. He says the error message is "Can't be installed on this computer." When I asked what disc he used, he says it was "the only one that let me start up from it." I believe it is disc one of the mac osX install disc version 1.0. He said the disc that was labeled for the G5 wouldn't let him boot up. He is ranting now about there being no difference between PC's and Apple. If you can, please tell me how to fix this, or at least how to get the disc out while it is the computer's startup disc. He's about ready to to hit the wall.
Update: Got the disc out and am now attempting to install from G5 OSX disc but getting the "this software cannot be installed on this computer" message. Why? It is the right disc!

I am in the process of selling my old Mini, so after migrated all my data to my new one, I wiped the drive (wrote zeros). I initially tried installing from the Snow Leopard disk, but the install failed for some reason. So, I pulled out my Leopard disk and attempted an install just to see if it was the disk or something like that. That also failed, so I ran disk utilities on the hard drive. After running repair disk, I got the error: "Invalid B-tree node size. Volume check failed. Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed."

I want to reinstall my MacBook Air with the 10.6 'Reinstall Drive' that came with the MBA -- the small USB key.
When I insert the device it pops up a window and I click the install icon; it tells me it will not reboot, which it does. The Apple log appears and the nothing happens (I have left it for 15 minutes). In the manual it tells me I can also insert the device, start eh MBA and hold down the C key. Same thing, apple logo then nothing else

but I have a Mac Pro 2008 that when I verify disk, I get an error saying I need to start up from the OS X install disc and run disk utility on it to fix errors. I've done that, it says it fixes errors, but back in the OS, it will give me same error again and say I need to run disk utility from the install disc.
So, my question is, I can reinstall the OS from my Snow Leopard disc, but I really don't want to... it's my freelance machine and I don't want to have to reinstall all of my applications (that can take years to install all discs, updates and media), scripts, plug-ins, media archives, etc.
Any advice on a way to fix disk errors like this without having to go back to all your install discs? I'm at work now so I can't remember the exact disk error, but I can post tonight if this can better direct me to a specific program/procedure that might help. I also haven't tried verifying disk from another admin account... which I can also try... just figured it seemed like a system-wide problem.

I have never had this problem before: I deleted Bootcamp partition. Repaired my hard disk and then erased my hard drive. Now I am trying to reinstall Snow Leopard and after the install starts it says: 35 minutes remaining" for about 5 minutes. Then it goes to a screen that says: "Install Failed: Mac OSX could not be installed on your computer. The Installer could not copy the necessary support files. Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again." I tried restarting and installing and I get the exact same situation. I am not sure what is going on here. This MBP is less than 6 months old and this is the 1st time I have tried a reinstall on this particular machine.

I just received my new MacBook Air 11" and love it! Though I no longer want the USB Software Reinstall Drive to contain the 10.6 and iLife '11 and I am looking for a way to format the USB thumb drive into a usable flash drive. I tried using the disk utility, but it only sees the drive like a CD containing the information and not like a flash drive, eliminating the simple option to just use the disk utility to erase. Hoping that someone can help me use this neat looking USB drive for something more than a piece of plastic I never pull back out of my box.

So I've got a unibody MBP and connected to this I have a 320gb external drive I use to back up, but I only back up music, movies and documents so it's got 50 free gigabytes. I was hoping to partition off say 30gigs, install tinyxp and play games off this partition. But when I try and partition off 30, 25 or even 20 gigs Disk Utility tells me there's no free space on the hard drive.
So my questions are, how can I solve this issues, and would this idea work for playing games through windows anyway? I initially tried to get a bootcamp partition on my main Macintosh HD, but apparently there are files that cannot be moved in the way, and the only way to solve said issue is a complete reinstall of leopard, which I can't be bothered with seeing as snow leopards only a couple of months away.

A friend brought his new 15" Macbook Pro to me after trying to install Boot Camp and Windows XP. He said that he made a second partition for Windows; however, the drive showed only one partition formatted with NTFS. I tried reinstalling mac os using the disk that came with the laptop. When it came time to choose the destination drive, none showed up. I then went to Disk Utility. The drive and the volume showed up in the left panel but I could not Erase or do anything else - all the options were grayed out. With no firewire port I am also unable to use target mode.

I recently upgraded the HDD on my MBP and did a clone from my previous HD which had Lion installed. However I've now noticed my new drive does not include the Recovery HD. Is there an easy way to re-install the Recovery HD to my drive without messing with my entire install/system contents? I made a Lion boot-disk on a USB key so I have access to that. I normally do a clean install for all my installs and would love to avoid wiping my HD reinstalling all of lion, just to get the recovery disk.

How do I reinstall Mac OS X after the hard drive has been replaced? I had an authorized Apple repair facility replace the hard drive on my IMac when the original drive died. I have the Mac OS X Install DVD which says "To start up from Mac OS X, hold down the C key as the computer starts up." I've tried that and all I get is a folder icon with a question mark on it. I'm guessing that's because I don't have the the OS installed to start from. How do I get the OS X installed?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.6), dead hard drive replaced

I have a hard drive with bad blocks. I backup the data and various other part of the drive to the cloud. However, I want to make a backup of the entire disk but want to be able to access all the data individually as I want to transfer the data onto a new HD and the applications/fonts etc onto an SSD. Also, is it advisable to literally copy the contents of the Applications folder across to the new SSD drive or should they really be re-installed one by one (yikes!)?

y question is : should I try to reinstall the entire operating system on to the g drive and boot from and use that as the main drive, or should I just learn how to configure all my programs to save to the g-drive. I have tons of dvds with video and data on them because I ran out of space long ago and so I am finally going to have some space so I am excited about having the g drive.I ask these questions because I have read in the past that the internal mac mini drives actually slow down the system, however I dont know if this is still true, I know the bus speed is faster etc in the new ones
