I just bought a pre-owned macbook off of ebay. This is my second mac, so I'm somewhat familiar with them. Here's my problem: When I first booted it up, it never took me through the whole "new owner registration" screen that you would see on a brand new macbook, it just went straight to the desktop. I went in and changed the Admin name and info etc manually, but when the computer is shut down and booted back up, it has my name listed on the login screen, but that little tiny title above it that says "(Owner)'s Mac" still says the old owners name! Furthermore, when i access mac programs such as Front row, it still says his name also.
So my question is, where do I go to change this? Do I need to go through the whole new owner registration screen manually, and if so, will I lose all of my work that's stored on my HD?
I am not the admin of the computer, but the admin gave me admin rights for a temporary time being, so when I went to login to my user it asked the question if i wanted to make some change or whatever, well appaerantly I clicked the wrong choice and i had the "Remember this choice" box clicked. So is there anyway to go back to change this?I have tried restarting and completely shutting down the comp, and taking admin rights off and putting them back on.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently took my iMac into a Mac store to get a new hard drive because the old one bit the dust. When I got back home, I realized that the apple "genius" spelt my name wrong as the admin. I know its' not a big deal but this bugs me to death. So, I made a new admin with my correctly spelled name and deleted the mispelled name. Is this ok or is this going to jack up my computer?

My wife's MacBook Pro has been doing this for some months now. It prompts her login credentials when something is changed in system preferences or like this one, an update from Adobe.

I went into Get Info and changed my own admin setting in Sharing and Permissions to Write Only. So now when I click on my hard drive, I am told I don't have access! How do I revert to the original settings? I want to see my hard drive.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSomehow all the accounts on my computer automatically changed to standard. The mac website said that this can happen after an upgrade and to fix it run the "reset password" utility from the install disc. I am using a school computer so I don't know where a mac os disk is. I am using OSX 10.5.8. I also don't know the root password.
I tried this to fix it : [URL] but the account I created was also set to standard. Is there any way to fix this without the install disc?
Edit:
I also tried this but it hung after starting SystemStarter: [URL]
I can't even change the time now....
I recently changed the Admin Paswd of my Mac Mini and now I don't remeber the new one. What should I do?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I upgraded to Snow Leopard, somehow my permissions have become affected and now when I log in as administrator, I am blocked from accessing folders that the administrator should be able to access. I think that my Administrator account details got deleted or changed to 'unknown' during the upgrade when I had to wipe my whole computer to load the new software. I now get the message: 'The folder “CrashReporter” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.' I can then go into 'Get Info' to change the permissions by adding my admin account (which is not there for some reason) and specifying 'read and write' and then it works fine. However, I have to do this individually for each and every folder and subfolder to make the files work properly. Is there a way of having the computer change all the access permissions to accept my admin name and password again? (So I don't have to change the permissions one at a time on each folder?)

I installed Mac OS X Server from Mac App Store. Then I deleted it, but Mac OS X Server changed my administrator account to standard account and I cannot administrate my Mac mini :-(. I cannot use my password and there is not any other administrator account. Do you know to change back my standard account to administator account?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter updating from 10.5.1 to 10.5.5, my account changed from Admin access to Standard. The problem is, I never had Root enabled and I also do not have Netinfo manager on my computer. The login screen only shows my account... no Guest or anything else. I keep going in circles as everything comes down to having to type in an admin name and password, but there are no admin accounts on the computer. I've been working on this for hours now and I'm about to just set up a new HD and transfer my files, but I'd like to figure this out before surrendering to that.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a circumstance under which a 'login' keychain would be missing? I thought it was created by default using the user's login password and was unlocked when they logged in. I'm working (long distance) with a friend who's having Keychain problems and can't seem to work this one out. He's got an iMac running 10.4.11. He recently changed his admin password (I don't know why) and Keychain stopped working. Easy enough, run Keychain First Aid. He says that this reports no problems, but the only keychains he has are 'system', 'microsoft_intermediate_certificates', and 'x509 anchors'. This is where I get lost.
View 1 Replies View RelatedQuick version:
Even though I can change passwords on an account I cannot login to the account with the new passwords (or the old one). I have tried changing the passwd with both in System Prefs and using "sudo passwd" in the Terminal.
Longer Story:
I recently changed passwords on my main account (call it "acct1") using the Terminal. However I then couldn't log back in, but luckily could still surf the web with acct2 (not an admin account). I found out how to create a new admin account (call it "acct3") by removing the /var/db/.AppleSetupDone file in single user mode. That worked, but (as I said in the quick version) when I change the password for acct1 in acct3, I still can't log in to acct1.
This is very annoying. Is there any solution or do I just need to copy acct1 files to acct3 and start over? I can't go into an Apple store for at least a week since I'm traveling.
I wanted to change my wallpaper for the login screen. I already changed the wallpaper in System/Library/CoreServices/DefaultDesktop.jpg. But when I check back at my login screen, it is still the purple aurora background.
I tried repairing it using onyx through file permissions and also snow leopard disk utility repair disk. But my wallpaper still doesn't change.
I tried using Loginox last time when I just got my snow leopard, when I tried changing the wallpaper, it crashed on me and this problem arised.
I bought a G3 imac 600 from an auction. no cd's came with it. it has software on it with multiple user logins. I can only login to one user who didn't use a password but cannot login as the admin.
it is running os 9.2.2 and I would like to upgrade to osx.
I just logged in to my system after restarting and immediately, before opening anything (other than Finder), was presented with a request for admin credentials, I think saying something about a change to my login preferences, which didn't make a lot of sense to me.
Any idea what would cause this, or how to make sense of the logs to see what exactly prompted it?
I installed Flash and Adium on this new machine this morning - would this have anything to do with it? I'm unaccustomed to getting the security prompt at unexpected times and now very nervous.
I am unable to log in to my IMac. When I try and log in to the Administrator account (my only account) it brings up a dialog box that says "You are unable to log in to the user account (user name) at this time with and OK button. Before this I was performing the Secure Empty Trash feature which froze on me. I tried exiting it out and logging out but was unable to. So I held the power button on the side of my IMac till it shut down. That is when this problem occurred.
My computer is:
IMac G4
Version 10.4.11
Build 8S135
Serial Number QP40909NQB8
I can not login to admin account with right password but I can login to user account. From user account I get the chance to reset password to admin account. After Logoff it's allowing me to log in to admin account with all data access . Problem is repeated after restarting Macbook pro -saying password to admin is incorrect. I have FileVault turn on , and the all updates and after pick up from apple service?

iBook is 800mhz, 512m with a 20g hd. The iBook boots to the login screen but won't accept the password. I have even tried older passwords just in case. I tried holding down the c while booting from the cd; sounds like the cdrom spins but again it boots to the login screen. I tried holding the Apple & S key to get to single user but it goes to the login screen. I tried holding the option key which brings up the start-up drives, but can't change to the fire wire drive because the password is unaccepted.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAlright, I FINALLY got windows on my mac and am very proud of myself. However, I am encountering what I hope is a final problem.
I want to log into Windows as an admin, so when it starts up I hit F8. The screen goes black and gives me a bunch of options, I choose "Safe Mode". Everything so far works like it should. But then the log screen appears with two options: Admin and my regular user. Obviously I want admin, but my keyboard and mouse are utterly nonresponsive , even the little caps light won't turn on. This means I'm stuck there, staring at what I want to click but unable to do so. The only button that works is the power button.
Anyone else run into this? More importantly, anyone know how to fix it?
I've recently started work with a new company and the previous employee has left, but has setup the adminstrative account on the work computer. When asked for a password, I don't know what he used. My boss and I have gone through some various passwords he used but none work. What are my options?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI set myself as the owner on my iBook the other day. Now when I start the computer, I get a black terminal screen as a login screen. It asks me to type in my username and password. It lets me type in my username, but when I try to type my password no characters show up, and it won't let me log in due to incorrect login information. Since everyone except me, the owner, has no access, there is no other login screen and it's just blank until I restart the computer and get the black screen over again. What do I do? Why aren't characters showing up when I type in my pass? I tried plugging in a third party keyboard but it didn't make any difference.
