Apr 9, 2009I was zeroing out the data on my 12" PowerBook before I installed Leopard and it failed. Now my hard drive isn't showing up. What should I do?

OS X :: Retrieving Data From Failed Hard Drive?
Sep 14, 2010My girlfriends HD failed the other day, with a lot of her portfolio pictures. She has a new HD and the computers working fine. My question is this - on a simplistic level, could transferring the failed HD platters to a new enclosure work as a means to retrieve the info. So if I buy I cheap working drive of same size/manufacturer - say 20 gig. Take it apart and remove it's platters. Then replace them with her failed disk's platters (160 gig). Would I stand any chance of retrieving the data? I really can't afford the $600 ish I'm being quoted to get it done professionally.

Jun 26, 2014my friend internal drive failed today and i got a new Seagate 500 sata to replace it
1- boot from my usb stick OSX 10.9 installer, select Disk Utlity and create 1x partition Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and got an error: File system formatter failed
2- boot from CMD + R and had exactly the same problem
3- tried another used but good internal HD and same problem
4- used my other macbook Retina and start the setup connecting the new seagate w/ Apricorn SATA-USB and reboot after setup. working fine after boot
5- installed that new seagate w/ 10.9 installed and working from my MB retina in the defective MB 13 and NEW ERROR:
"SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software".i replaced over 100x internal HD on Macbook computer in the last 10 years and NEVER see that problem..
PowerPC :: Hard Drive Not Working / Repair Volume Failed Could Not Unmount Disk
Jul 17, 2009So so annoyed right now. Today my 12" G4 powerbook started to become slow, lots of spinning wheel, delayed menus etc. I checked file permissions, rebooted and it just kept on getting slower. Eventually it wouldn't get past the white apple screen.
I booted off the Tiger DVD and ran disk utility to fix and repair permissions again. It wouldn't let me repair the disk as I kept getting this error:
'Repair volume failed with error could not unmount disk'
I had to reboot again, and eventually my hard disk no longer appears in Disk Utility. I tried to boot into safe mode and get this:

So now I pretty much can't do anything with it. Failed Hard Drive?
OS X :: External Hard Drive Not Showing - System Preference
Mar 20, 2009I have a Toshiba 160 GB USB external HDD (no power supply required) that I use simply as a backup for some Windows programs when I am using my virtual machine. It required a double USB cable and its icon showed on both the Windows and iMAC screen until a day or so ago. It is a functioning unit when I put it on a separate PC. I have not been able to correct the problem and in viewing some of the forum items I keep seeing suggestions to view the 'System Preferences --> general' - I do not see a 'general' nor any reference in the 'apple' that refers to hard drives (external or internal).

Jun 29, 2008My Powerbook is all banged up. Anyway, the little needle-type thing in the power hole broke off so it's no longer operating. I have a bunch of eMacs and iMac G5s/Intels around the house.. Can the powerbook harddrive connect to them so I can restore some data or do I need to find another solution?

Jan 25, 2007once I get my hard drive replaced, how do I go about installing OSX on the new HD? I mean, the HD won't have an OS at all, so do I just insert my install disks, boot off them, and then install OSX on the new HD? Or will the computer boot up all? I will transfer everything over from my USD backup drive- yes, I know that will take more than a little while... (coincidentally, the Seagate Barracuda is LOUD). I'm only asking because the place where I want to get the replacement itself done charges like 30 bucks to do it, but ONLY for the physical replacement and no data transfer. Hopefully the software side I'll be able to handle...

Mar 22, 2010my aunt recently bought a Macbook because her 9 year old iMac g4's hard drive finally wore out. She is now giving it to me, which i plan to fix. The only problem is that she threw out the restore discs thinking she was just going to recycle the computer. I searched ebay and couldn't find any restore discs for iMac g4 for sale. There are powermac g4 discs, but I doubt that will work the same. So here is my problem. Do I wait for a set of restore discs to surface on ebay, or are there other means of restoring it.

Jun 26, 2014What can be done if Time Machine failed to save certain data to external hard disk, but I do have the old hard drive? I have a new IMac 10.9.2. The old IMac was hit by lightning/surge. Restored data from external LaCie disk but some information is missing. Apparently Time Machine did not save it to the external disk, or we just can't locate it. We do haves the old hard disk and will put it in a box to be able to access it.
Is partitioning the answer?

Notes. Failed HDD ASD Test. A new hard drive was installed in September of 2011 after the previous hard drive failed. Having worked well until now the system seems to give the same problems as it had previously. I am wondering if this is a compatibility issue as others have pointed out.
I have been told by the technician my only option is to replace the entire hard drive again for the second time with a new one. However to my understanding a ASD test is very specific and this my not be necessary? Further I am attempting a final backup just in case. I don't have to take it in where I could just back it up myself without the system shutting down.

Aug 21, 2014I recently received an iMac as a "gift"... turns out it has some problems. I am unable to reinstall the default OS (Mountain Lion) because I have yet to be able to partition the HDD correctly. The error I keep getting is: Partition failed with the error: Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed.At this point, the default Macintosh HD isn't showing, so it must of been erased/deleted.

Sep 6, 2009Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

Dec 10, 2014I have lost all my data from my harts drive. The laptop is under warranty. I have been told that they have replaced my hard drive but could not get any data off the old one. I have now lost all my data, photos, files, music etc. NO backups, only simply because i did not know how to do them. Is there any way of getting the files back? All my work spreadsheets and accounts were also lost.

Jun 19, 2009After waiting in a non iphone line today at the apple store to pick up my Black Macbook that hard drive failed. Well I got there and I realized I still had tiger on it. So I get in the car start it up and after set up I got Leopard on it for free! lol I was like this is nuts. So applecare covered my repair and I didn't have apple care and they said with the situation I had they would let it go. So I basically saved 350 dollars! What a day!

May 19, 2010The first day I got my MBP two years ago, it fell off the coffee table and got a small dent in the left side. I thought it was a cosmetic problem, and didn't think much about it. Three months ago, when my laptop was in for repair because the screen cracked due to a manufacturing defect, I told the Apple employee that when my laptop was in for repair, and they inspected the dent and found that it could cause problems for me in the future, to repair it and quote me the price to fix it. I assumed that the price to fix that dent and prevent future problems would be a lot cheaper than fixing whatever may break from it in the future. I got my laptop back, with a note saying that the dent was a cosmetic problem and consequently they didn't feel the need to fix it. So that was all good.
Until my hard drive crashes. So I take it to the Genius Bar, and they send it in for repair. I get a call today saying that the dent was the cause of the hard drive failure, and that the failure wasn't covered under warranty because of accidental damage. They also quoted me $1240 to fix it. I wanted to argue that since they didn't fix the dent and charge me for that three months ago because it was determined to be a cosmetic problem, that it should be up to them to fix the hard drive, since I tried to take the preventative measure awhile ago and they said there was no problem. Do I have a case here, or should I just have them send the laptop back and try to get it fixed cheaper?

I have tried "Disk Utility" several times - once zero'ing out the drive, once DOD'ing it (but that would have taken more than two days, so I cancelled that op.) - and by simply clicking on "Erase" and setting the 'volume format' as the Mac one (journaled) - Each time it has failed and the message I get is "Drive Formatter Failed." Dodgy drive? Dodgy Disk Utility? I'd like to be able to use the drive with some video in Final Cut Pro that I'm going to be working with.

Sep 26, 2009I want to carbon copy my bootable external drive to my main internal bootable hard drive so I tried to use Disk Utility to erase it but it will indicate that it failed and can't unmount. When I tried to manually unmount by dragging it to the trash it indicated that it is in use. I can't understand why it's in use since I booted from the external drive which I wanted to the copy to the internal drive.

I was glad at the first minute as it comes with an expected 16M-cache 500G HD (instead of 8M-cache 320G), as well as airport extreme card installed without additional charge. But at the same time I find out that both hard drive bays 3 and 4 are not working when I connect another three 3rd-party HDs to the machine internally. While at the same time, the original HD in bay 1 and bay 2 (which is hosting one of the three 3rd-party HDs) are working properly. Is there anything I have ignored and I should perform now to enable bay 3 and 4. Or, should I call Apple now to claim a DOA and request a replacement?

I have Leopard as the current OS, and that is in my backup files from Time Machine, but I do not have a disk with Leopard. Wondering the best course of action and/or if someone had success wit ha particular Serial ATA using the Tiger disks?

Oct 30, 2010A while back I removed a Apple Hard Drive after I thought I had shut down the computer. Instead, it had just slept and so still had the power on. This caused the file system in the hard drive to fail, so I erased and rebuilt the file system on the Hard Drive. It worked fine for another day, and then failed. When I went to see if I could fix it, Disk Utility said the S.M.A.R.T status had failed and the send the hard drive to an apple specialist. Is there any way I could fix the Hard Drive myself?
