I recently purchased a new (to me) iBook Clamshell off eBay running Os 9.1. This is my first Mac, It has a 6 gig HD and the HD seems like its spinning really loud and it makes chirping sounds whenever I change the screen saver
Does this Mean the HD is failing? Should I get a new HD
It makes this noise while it's copying. If i press slightly on the body it makes all sorts of crazy noises. WTF?

I have trided to upgrade the hard drive on my G4 15" powerbook. The ribon conector from the drive to the board has come free from the board and I don't know how to refasten it.

When it started up, it made a very odd sound that was similar to a CD/DVD being processed or ejected.I thought maybe it was a one time thing, but since restarting it a few times, it's made the same sound each time.Is this normal? I've never heard it before. It's like there's a CD or DVD in there, but of course there isn't.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have configured Mail.app to make a sound (a short MP3 file) when new mail arrives. This used to work a few years ago.
For the past few years it hasn't worked. User interface sounds are switched on and everything is activated in System Preferences and Mail preferences.
When I check the settings for the MP3 file in Mail preferences, it even plays the file there. But when a new mail arrives it does not.
Simiarly, and I don't know if this problem is related or not, Skype has stopped making user interface sounds. Again, this is the same Mac, which is configured for user interface sounds in System Preferences, and Skype is configured to make a ringing sound when I call someone and some weird sound when I receive an instant message in a chat window.
How quiet should the new 27" iMac's be running? Mine is fairly quiet but not silent. I recall reading a review prior to buying that had said it runs silent, so I'd like to make sure I don't have a defective system. I can hearing a very slight persistent sound. It's so slight I don't know how to describe it accurately--sounds like it could be a bit like a buzzing or a rotating sound. Or perhaps it's just normal operational sound? The HD will also make some sounds like it's reading something even when I'm not really doing anything.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Dual 1.8 G5 and my hard drive has started to make a clicking sound every now and then. I believe it may be on the verge of dying anyday. Since i have space to put in another internal hard drive i am planning to get a WD Black Caviar 1TB and put it in.
Now my question is how do i move all my application from the old internal drive to the new internal drive.From what i have researched it seems that using a enclosure is the way to go but all the info i have seen is referring to replacing the drive rather adding a new one.I would like to move everything to the new drive and make that a master.What is the best way to perform this task?
So I just partitioned my drive to install Windows and noticed that my hard drive is now making that "crunching" sound that some hard drives make. It started during my Windows installation, and it happens regularly in Windows.
I also briefly hear it while OSX is starting up, but it doesn't seem to happen much in OSX. I've launched a bunch of applications and it is still pretty much silent. Any ideas what could cause this? Could it be NTFS? I have several hard drives in my PC that don't make that sound. I am using a 17" MacBook Pro unibody with the regular 320gb 5400rpm drive that it comes with.
the hardware of my computer makes pretty loud air sounds... is that normal? i just bought my computer on the 11th of february.

Whenever I wake up my new 15" Pbook, it makes a noise from the CD drive. It doesnt seem to effect it at all, the CD drive works, burns CDs and DVDs.

I have no idea if the lcd is anygood still, but i was wondering if there was any way I could connect things to it. I only has 2 cords left, i ripped out what i think was the airport and the microphone. The 2 that are left seem to be for power and video.

I have a Seagate FreeAgent 1.5 TB External Hard Drive with two partitions on it: one for Time Machine, and one for extra storage. Yesterday, I tried to plug the drive in and nothing happened. It didn't light up; it wasn't recognized by my Mac. Just a strange buzzing noise that occurs every 2-3 seconds. So, I left it alone overnight. Woke up this morning, plugged it in, and same results.
I'm extremely upset and concerned over this. Losing this data is not an option, as there are more than just backups on this. It should be noted that the day before this started, it took a short tumble off my desk, and when trying to eject it yesterday, the drives would not eject so I had to pull it out. Please, if you know of any way to get it working again or to salvage the data on this thing, please help. I've attached an audio clip of what the drive sounds like when plugged in.

First of all, Noob imac owner here. I was just handed down an old imac g3 400mhz desktop that doesn't power at all.When hitting the power button on the unit or keyboard, the units screen makes a noise. No hard drive or green light comes on at all. At dead silence in the room, i can hear the screen flicker, like a tv would come on. I went to go about and read a few problems before, replaced the battery and even tried a new power cord. Any Ideas?

my 2011 Mac Mini that I bought back in January is making some strange noises occasionally. High-pitched screeching noises with some clicking. It sounds like it should be the hard drive sounds of doom, but what's odd is that I check the drive using SMARTreporter occasionally, and nothing really changes as far as error statistics, and the drive otherwise works fine. So I'm paranoid, just because I wonder – is it potentially not the hard drive and actually something else entirely? Is this even possible?

I'm looking to change some of the OS X default sounds (like the very annoying "boing!" drag-and-drop sound). I'm not talking about the alert sound that can be changed easily via the "Sound" function in System Preferences. I'm looking for the Terminal commands that would enable me to substitute an existing Mac OS X sound for the ones I don't like. (I'm not looking to create or find online other sounds; I'm happy to just use the ones that come with Mac OS X.) Some weeks ago I found a web page that described the necessary terminal commands and also where to find the .aiff files, but I've spent the last week trying to find that page again with no luck.

View 7 Replies View RelatedYesterday I installed the latest security updates for my ibook via software update. I'm not sure if this is related to my problem, but I thought I might as well mention it. A few hours after installing the updates, I turned on my computer. Everything was running fine, however as I was listening to music and surfing the internet, my screen turned black. I checked the contrast and it was all the way up. The screen then turned completely off. Upon restarting the computer, my screen got to the loading page with the apple icon and the loading circle, and then turned black and flickered every so often with a screen of vertical multi-colored bars.
I held down the power button to turn the screen off, and the flickering increased, before becoming completely covered by the multi-colored bars and then shutting off. This morning I tried again and my computer actually booted up. However, after a few seconds the screen went black, paused for a few seconds, then went completely red, then green, then blue, then three shades of gray, and finally black again. It repeated this cycle twice before the screen turned itself off. Is this a virus, or hardware/software malfunctioning. I've had my ibook for two years.
I am new to Mac - having wished I had converted years ago - my new MacBook Pro is great. Mac makes Windows seem like living in the stone age, but I am rambling. I have found that it's possible to manually change graphic power settings within energy saver, but is there just that one setting? I would have hoped for an automatic change of settings depending if you are working on mains or battery. Unrelated, does a Mac have a delete key?

My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?
ok, i installed 4gb (2x2)of ram in my alum macbook pro 2,4ghz 15" and in the 1 first time i didn't took off the battery but it went well and booted ok, after that i turned off the computer and the next time keeped making noises.
i tried put the old ram and it's everything ok, i tried both ram slots and memoryes and the 1rs booted ok alone but the second didn't, what is happening, it's the second ram damaged or have you another explanation?
So I have this really weird issue that isn't a real problem as much as a nuisance, but it is quite irksome. In the the sidebar of the Finder window, the icons for my hard drive (along with the windows partition) will change randomly and without my involvement. Sometimes they show up as the windows entourage logo, sometimes this other weird icon I can't recognize. Has anyone seen this before / know why this is happening?
Btw, I'm running a MBP 2.53ghz w/ leopard
