PowerPC :: Can Format It And Install OS 9 Since Running ArchiCAD 7 On OS 9

Jul 21, 2008

I have a Powerbook (the last revision Apple released) and i have Leopard 10.5.4 running on it right now...

Since i got a Macbook Pro though (waiting for delivery) i posted an ad to sell my powerbook on a site here in Greece. a dude called to say he's interested but was wondering if he can format it and install OS 9 since he's running ArchiCAD 7 on OS 9 now and thinks it won't run at all or at least not that well on Tiger or Leopard.

Hence the question, can it be done? or is there a hardware limitation somewhere or something? is it as simple as sticking the OS 9 disk in the powerbook and going through the install process as usual?

Mac Mini :: Cannot Format Hard Drive And Do A Clean Install?

Apr 27, 2012

I'm in a pretty big mess right now.  I was using boot camp with lion and Windows 7 no problem and I wanted to edit the sizes of the partions.  It didnt go so well and I ended up losing both operating systems.  Now the big problem is when I boot up from the recovery partion I cannot do any sort of formating from the disk utility, it always give me some sort of error.  When I try to install lion via web there is no partion that I can Install it to.  I can install Windows no problem from a USB drive whcih I have done already.  When managing the disk in windows I see 2 of the windows partions, the mac recovery partion, and an 80 GB partition that I can format but I cannot do anything else with.  I dont have any images or recovery devices other than the recovery partition.how to get the drive back to mac format so I can re install lion.

PowerPC :: IBook - Getting Kernal Panic When Trying To Install OS After HDD Install

Aug 19, 2008

I just replaced the HD in an iBook G3 I have laying around with a toshiba 40gb. The install went fine and I formatted it in disk utility using mac os x extended (journaled). I ran it for errors and it checked out fine. I also ran the apple hardware test CD and everything checked out there too. The problem is I am getting a kernal panic no matter what I do. I started off installing 10.3 and the first disc installs fine, but then when it restarts it gets an instant kernal panic. I tried 10.4 with the same results. Then I tried the 10.2 discs that the iBook came with and it would get the very last step of the install on the 1st disc and would not go any farther. It said "one minute remaining" for over an hour.

I have taken a picture of the error log that shows up and you can see here: The top line got cut off but it says "panic(cpu 0): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook4,3" Like I said, everything checks out hardware wise and i have tried three different versions of OS X.

PowerPC :: Running A VPN With An Old B&W G3?

Sep 14, 2009

a few years ago my friend gave me an old B&W G3 that was used in schools. It's got a 300MHz G3 and 256 megs of ram, and some DB15 ATI card. It currently sits in a storage room in the basement gathering dust.

I'm wondering, if I install OS X Panther (or maybe Jaguar if it'd run better), if I'll be able to host a VPN for my brother who's in China trying to get around the internet blocks there. The tunneling program he uses there is really slow.

On a side note, would it be worth upgrading the ram/CPU to do this? I probably wouldn't want to spend what it'd cost to upgrade the CPU for such an old computer, though.

PowerPC :: Fan Always Running, HD And Heatsink REALLY Hot?

Apr 26, 2009

I got a Powerbook G4 12" from my cousin, and the hinge was all beat up. The screen wouldnt work, although it did turn on fine(fan running and HD clicking). So we took it apart, and found a broken wire in the hinge, and replaced it, and now it works. But, after using it for a while, the fan was on full blast, and wouldnt turn down. Since it was still apart, we took off the top, and the HD and heatsink were encredibly hot(i probably would have burned my finger if I kept it there long enough). I know that it will get a bit hot, but nothing should be running at that temperature. What could cause this?

Mac Pro :: Caldigit Raid Card Install Running

Feb 19, 2010

I'm trying to install a Caldigit Raid card. My Current setup pre Raid is:

1st Drive -150GB 10k rpm - OS X
2nd Drive - 150 GB 10k rpm - WINDOWS OS
3rd Drive - 1T - Library - About 800GB used
4th Drive - 1T - Backup - using Super Duper to back the library up every night.

The way I want to have it setup is 4 x 1.5T in RAID 5. Get rid of Windows and only have OS X running in there.Caldigit raid card won't let you do a fresh install in a new drive. You must have a a drive with OS in the first bay with Caldigit drivers installed in order to run successfully. That means that I have to install drive 1 and 3, install the drivers on there, clones drive 1 and 3 (which my understanding is not possible), boot from external build the raid, and clone it back to internal drives. Drive 1 hold OS, but since 3 has all the files, my credentials are all in there. The computer won't let me just boot with only drive 1 in there, thus the reason why I need to clone both drives.

So I tried, doing a fresh install on a new hard drive w/o the caldigit card in the computer I'm getting the multi langague screen before the cd fully loads. I am 99% sure that I have the 10.5.2 cd trying to do the fresh install. Doing a fresh install is now out of the question.I've tried the CMM+OPT+P+R and CMM + OPT + O + F as well, but nothing happens. Meaning that I think those commands are not working at all in my PC. This is with fresh drive and os 10.5.2 in the cd tray. What are my choices here? Can I make a new credential in my OS drive and point it to the OS HD, clone that, and build my RAID?

OS X Yosemite :: Clean Install Running Very Slow?

Nov 30, 2014

I recently had a new hard drive put in my 2007 iMac and have been experiencing some problems.  I did a clean install of mavericks, then upgraded to Yosemite and the machine has been very laggy, finder and all programs included.  I saw a few posts about FileVault being an issue but I checked and it is turned off.

I should also add that the machine was running fine on Mavericks, slowness only started after the Yosemite upgrade.

PowerPC :: G4 Running Really Slowly - How To Repair

Mar 21, 2006

Okay, basically, I've had my PowerBook for a little over 2 years. Over the last few months, it's been incredibly slow. For example, I can only load one or two tabs at a time in Safari before the 'rainbow spinning wheel of death' appears, and takes a couple of minutes to leave, and load the page. This type of thing happens across the board, on pretty much all applications.

PowerPC :: Burning - Running Several Programs

Nov 5, 2006

What I used to love about my Powerbook G4 is that it's pretty much silent, unless I happen to be burning something, or running several programs at once. However, this appears to be a thing of the past, as I've begun to notice that the fan is now permanently whizzing, and while it's not loud, it's anything but silent. This happens constantly, while I'm running minimal programs, and while my computer is sitting on my desk, not on any soft surfaces.
