I have and old iBook 14" G4 that will not boot. I'm trying to transfer files and apps to a MBP. I've pulled the HD and have it connected to my MBP using an external HD adapter. I tried using Migration Assistant to move the data but the only choice I have is to move the profile and not the rest of the data. Does anyone have a suggestion for a workaround?

Yesterday I was on facebook when my ibook g4 went black and turned off. There wasn't any beeping/flashing or anything but it won't turn on. When I press the little button on the battery 5 yellow lights light up so I guess the battery's fine but the laptop itself just died. If i can't get it fixed mum won't buy me a new one and i'll just have to deal with it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just got a new 15" Macbook Pro to replace my old iBook G4 and want to transfer information to the new one. The Migration Assistant says I have a few options and I am deciding between these two:
1. Transfer info from another Mac
2. Transfer info from a Time Machine backup
Which would offer the most flexibility so I don't transfer too much? I'd like to start fresh but need my photos, internet files, etc. My last time machine backup was yesterday so it's pretty up to date, but I'm worried it will transfer too much crap since it backs up the whole drive.
The charger for my ibook just decided to die, It has not worked like it should lately because it's beginning to break around the area where it connects to the mac.
Anyways.. when it died i noticed a tiny bit of smoke coming from either the charger or the ibook. Will things be ok again if i just buy a new charger or is the thing inside the computer fried?

My wife's powerbook and my iBook died Friday. I believe the Powerbook's HD crashed. As for the iBook:
Its a 1.2 ghz PowerPC g4 with 768 Ram. For some reason, the computer runs all day when its stable and on my desk. Once I move it, the screen will go blank and its obvious the computer is on. But the screen is a black with everything locked up. When I power down, let it sit and start it up, it works again, only until you move it. You can imagine how frustrating this is. Its completely updated to the latest version of 10.4.
Onto the Powerbook:
I heard some clicking. It sounded like a hard drive problem. I turned it on, it went right to a black screen which looks very similar to a DOS command screen. It says "Computer's Name Powerbook" or something like that on a command line. It just stalls at this screen.
My concern is this..are both computers dead? I'm in summer session and NEED a computer. So I have to act fast. What can I do?
all's not lost as i have an imic but is there anyway to revive my core audio?

how do I transfer all of my data from my ibook to my new macbook pro? I just bought a western digital 250 gb hard drive and I already just backed up all of my ibook stuff on the external hard drive.
So i assume once my new laptop comes in, I just plug in the external hard drive to the macbook pro and transfer it. Is it really that simple or am I missing something? Will all of my pictures and music go directly into iphoto and itunes or will I have to mannually do that? That would be a real pain if I had to manually do it.

I restarted my old computer holding the T and the firewire symbol appeared fine. I just bought a G4 800 mhz tower that has a gig of ram, but it does not have DVD drive (it's a cdrw only). My Ilife install disk is a DVD, is there anyway to use the DVD drive on my ibook to install software onto the G4 tower? Both devices have firewire but if possible I would like to use an ethernet cable connection between the two. I dont have the correct firewire cable(it's expensive).
A second question is i an os 10.3 on my ibook and 10.4 on my G4 tower. Is there a easy way to transfer all my files, settings, ect... from the ibook to the G4 tower? I don have the osx 10.4 install discs either (if that matters).

View 3 Replies View Relatedi've been using Leopard for a few months already. yesterday, i made a great mistake - i installed ShapeShifter (which currently doesn't support Leopard). the problem is that the Login Window doesn't show up anymore. when i boot my ibook, the system normally loads up and then the blue background appears, so does the cursor... but no login window! i can't really do anything. i'm still not sure if it's the only cause of the problem, cause before the great surprise i also performed a full cleaning with Onyx (yay, this time the Leopard version -.-) but i don't really think that it could cause the problem. now i don't know what to do. haven't tried booting from the Leopard DVD neither the Tiger one, but i think that it wouldn't really help. i also can't access my hdd via network because i can't even log-in. what to do? y point is mainly to recover all my files before i entirely reinstall the system. although i would be really happy if i could get the system working again of course.

I have attempted to figure out how to transfer the files from the G3 to my new Mac, but I can't figure it out. The new Mac says to insert the "Install Disc 1" into the old computer and to install "DVD or CD Sharing Setup" software. I can't find any such software on the only install DVD I received. (titled "Mac OS X Install DVD") (Nor on the accompanying "Software Install DVD.") Further, the new Mac says to open Migration Assistant on the old machine and follow instructions. (Hard to do when there is no Migration Assistant on that computer.) (I am attempting to transfer files via wireless network.) Any one know how to run Migration Assistant on an old iMac running Panter?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI had just opened up a word file from a usb drive this morning to type notes for class. When I tried to save it, it wouldnt save because it can't read my usb drive anymore. I tried ejecting it, and whenever I reinsert the usb drive it says: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" The usb drive has all my notes from this semester of classes. I really need them or I am completely screwed. Is there any way to recover these files? I've been searching among the forums and online and I can't find anything. My IT dept at school doesnt know what to do. I have no clue what format it was in...I've always used it in my iBook G4 w/ tiger. It's a generic USB drive. I really need these book notes and class notes that were on the disk....I have finals in about a month.

There are two reasons for this:
1. I have deleted apps in iTunes that I don't want, but not on the iPhone. I don't want to transfer the apps back to iTunes because I want them gone.
2. I have bought apps on the iPhone that I do want to keep. I want these transferred to iTunes.
So if I have both types 1 and 2 then there is no good answer. Preferably iTunes should offer to sync and choose which apps to transfer and what not to transfer. Is there a way to change this behaviour? By the time I sync I don't know what I've done so I'm usually not sure how to answer the question. Sometimes I like to bulk delete apps in iTunes--it is easier than doing it on the iPhone.

My G4 finally died, no big deal, I have a pretty recent back up. It simply does nothing when I try to start it, browsing the forums indicates it may be a switch issue, I tried resetting the PRAM. Anyway, I was hankering for a new one anyway. Is there a guide out there to pull the HD to access as an external on the new Imac I plan on purchasing tomorrow? I probably need an external HD kit, but would it be worth it? There are probably some photos and music I added since my last backup.

So the 4200rpm drive in my 867mhz powerbook finally decided to bite the big one, so now after frantically backing up whatever I could I'm in the market for a new drive. I want 80 gigs, 5400rpm and an 8mb cache, and have basically narrowed it down to either: Western Digital wd800ve or Seagate Momentus 5400.3 ST980815A Does anyone here have either of these drives running in their laptops?

Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.
My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro and an older (5 year old) Western Digital external hard drive. I have always used this hard drive for both mac and windows. Recently, however, whenever I go to transfer a file from the mac to the WD hard drive, the little transfer window pops up and it appears to initiate the transfer. However, it never fully starts it. It appears to "get stuck" in that initiating stage, showing zero of 3.16 gb transferred and shows an unknown transfer time. This happens no matter how long I leave it open. Again, I have used this external hard drive with my macs for the past 5 years without any problems until now. I haven't moved or modified the WD hard drive
