PowerPC :: Network Mac Pro To Old G4 To Transfer Files?
Feb 27, 2008
I have both my new Mac Pro and my old G4 connected to a cable modem through a router. Can someone tell me (or direct me to a walkthrough) of how I can see my G4's drives on my Mac Pro to transfer files, rather than remove and install drives. Basically, I guess that would be setting up a LAN?

I just got a new 15" Macbook Pro to replace my old iBook G4 and want to transfer information to the new one. The Migration Assistant says I have a few options and I am deciding between these two:
1. Transfer info from another Mac
2. Transfer info from a Time Machine backup
Which would offer the most flexibility so I don't transfer too much? I'd like to start fresh but need my photos, internet files, etc. My last time machine backup was yesterday so it's pretty up to date, but I'm worried it will transfer too much crap since it backs up the whole drive.

I have just purchased a new 21.5 iMac to replace a G3 iMac running 10.3.9. There is no Migration Assistant on the old Mac. I have attempted to figure out how to transfer the files from the G3 to my new Mac, but I can't figure it out. The new Mac says to insert the "Install Disc 1" into the old computer and to install "DVD or CD Sharing Setup" software. I can't find any such software on the only install DVD I received. (titled "Mac OS X Install DVD") (Nor on the accompanying "Software Install DVD.") Further, the new Mac says to open Migration Assistant on the old machine and follow instructions. (Hard to do when there is no Migration Assistant on that computer.) (I am attempting to transfer files via wireless network.) Any one know how to run Migration Assistant on an old iMac running Panter?

I have and old iBook 14" G4 that will not boot. I'm trying to transfer files and apps to a MBP. I've pulled the HD and have it connected to my MBP using an external HD adapter. I tried using Migration Assistant to move the data but the only choice I have is to move the profile and not the rest of the data. Does anyone have a suggestion for a workaround?

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro and an older (5 year old) Western Digital external hard drive. I have always used this hard drive for both mac and windows. Recently, however, whenever I go to transfer a file from the mac to the WD hard drive, the little transfer window pops up and it appears to initiate the transfer. However, it never fully starts it. It appears to "get stuck" in that initiating stage, showing zero of 3.16 gb transferred and shows an unknown transfer time. This happens no matter how long I leave it open. Again, I have used this external hard drive with my macs for the past 5 years without any problems until now. I haven't moved or modified the WD hard drive

I'm banging my head against the wall with this problem. I have a new MBP 13", 4GB Ram, etc etc. When I transfer files across my network (or the office network), it will consistently fail to transfer a few of the files. For instance, I just tried to copy 50 photos to an SMB share on our server here at the office. The transfer window show the progress of 50 files, but when I look at the folder, there are only 48 files. Sometimes I get less, sometimes I get all 50. The same goes for my home network to an SMB share. I've confirmed this failure over N and G networks. The AP at home and the office are different models and I went as far as purchasing a new one for home since I thought it was the problem. Same results. Is there some hardware error going on here with my wifi card? Is there any way to test it? Are the SMB shares the problem?

How long does it take for you to copy about 12GB wirelessly over a N network to a NAS attached to your router? For me (Granted its over G because I don't have a N card), it takes close to 5 hours for 12GB :O. Is it supposed to take that long or what?

So I've been using a 1TB Time Capsule for a while now with my old HP and recently purchased a MacPro [15 inch base model]. My room mate has a recent model Macbook as well as an older iMac. We have a 50MBPS internet connection through our local ISP. More or less I am looking for advice on how to make sure our network is:
1. Secure.
2. Faster transfer speeds between all of our computers to and from the Time Capsule. [Where to find / adjust / optimize these settings]
3. Utilize our internet connection to it's fullest potential.
I am mostly concerned with my machine [optimizing it that is.] then the rest of the computers in the house. Go slow and use medium sized words as I am still wading into the world of Mac.

Gah, internet is messing up, logged me out I have to rewrite my whole long message....when transferring between my new MBP and ibook G4 on 1st startup.... it asked me to connect by firewire. Idon't have a firewire that has 1 side the new firewire connector and the other side old (I didn't even know that the shape of the firewire had changed). I tried to do it wirelessly and it said it was going to take 106 hours so I stopped it to use my computer.
Now I am trying to transfer again. I don't have a firewire cable that will work. I have an ethernet, but when I try to connect to my computer server (through ethernet or wirelessly) it says that I don't have sufficient privileges. My password (which I am sure is correct) DOES NOT WORK and I don't know why. I tried to disable all security so I can get in with no password, but nothing I do is working.
Any ideas? How can I transfer my files? How can I get back to that transfer wirelessly screen that occurred at start up? Migration Assistant only gives me a firewire option. Is there a firewire that will connect between old and new firewire models???
How do I set up a network connection with no password protection? (Or why isn't my password working?)

Is there anyway to ensure that when two Macs are File Sharing with Firewire that they use that connection rather than the network connection? Anytime I connect I can't tell how I'm connected until I try to transfer a file and it says it'll take fifteen minutes. If I turn off my airport it'll then use the firewire and transfer in seconds. Is there anyway around having to disable wifi to get it to use the wire?
Also, how do I turn on file sharing for just one other Mac? I just want to be able to share the files on the Mini with the MBP, not any other computer on the network.

Snow Leopard (10.6.8) became corrupted resulting in not being able to shut down my 1/2007 Intel Core 2 Duo MacBookPro and not being able to download numerous programs and updates. I backed-up my laptop, took it into the Apple Store where they wiped the hard disc clean and reloaded the OS. They suggested I use Migration Assistant to restore my backed up information to my laptop, but ALL of my settings from Desktop, to the Dock, to Finder, to screen savers, to Safari bookmarks, to all of my Mail inboxes, archives and smart email boxes, and to Documents and all of my files and their organization, to iTunes, to Address Book, to Calendar are GONE. Do I need to do some more formal kind of a restore from my back-up drive to recover/restore this information and "get my laptop back" or is it all lost?

how do I transfer all of my data from my ibook to my new macbook pro? I just bought a western digital 250 gb hard drive and I already just backed up all of my ibook stuff on the external hard drive.
So i assume once my new laptop comes in, I just plug in the external hard drive to the macbook pro and transfer it. Is it really that simple or am I missing something? Will all of my pictures and music go directly into iphoto and itunes or will I have to mannually do that? That would be a real pain if I had to manually do it.

Well my macbook pro penryn has finally shipped out of Shanghai, and as that's real close to Singapore, the next two days will have it in my hands.
So I need to transfer my user from my current powerbook g4 (which I will sadly miss) to the new mac. I wondered whether going from PowerPC to Intel what the best way to go is.
Should I totally trust the migration assistant, even though I know I have things on the powerbook which aren't intel, or should I take an opportunity to build a new machine, pulling in my documents and downloads folders, and then redownloading things I actually use and setting them up from scratch? Does anyone know the options which Migration Assistant gives you (ie basic information, all document, all applications, ... etc), or is it just all or none.
For mail I have everything on IMAP, I think I want to just set up a new account and re-import everything. That sound right?
I need to deauthorize iTunes from this machine, I'm up to 4 in the house already.
My temptation is to build from scratch and lose 4 years of cruft, however I'm sure I've also customized things in the past (like AFP mounts) which I no longer quite remember what they were.

I have a G4 laptop with Airport and bluetooth, and have just bought a MacPro which needs to go back because it's faulty. Problem is, they say the bluetooth module is not available anymore for my replacement MacPro and I didnt order a airport either, Im not to fussed about the wireless keyboard + mouse but I was going to use bluetooth to transfer files and share the internet connection from the G4 when needed (The MacPro dosnt need constant connection, only for updating, registering etc). Now, getting the replacement macpro has already taken about 3 hours of phone calls so im not sure if its worth trying to get the bluetooth for what its worth, I dont know if this is even the best way to share files and connection? Would using the ethernet be easier, I assume I would still need a hub like with PCs? Is it possible to use a cheap 2-4 port hub or do I need an expensive mac one? Or should I press them for an airport?

I got to work yesterday and opened my iBook. Nothing. So I turned it on. Nothing. I checked the battery and it was dead. I let it charge all day it did not charge. I put a new battery in it today. Before I put the battery in it had 3 bars of life left. As soon as I put it in it went down to 1. It still won't power on. Any ideas? All of my info for work is on this computer. I am getting a Macbook soon so is there any way to transfer info from a non working computer?

I am having problems booting my 700 mhz G4 Flat Panel Mac after connecting to my new Mac via Firewire to transfer a disk image of OS 10.4 I made from the DVD supplied with my new Mac. I was driven to trying this solution to upgrading my old Mac (from 10.2 to 10.4) after:
1) not being able to purchase a retail copy from Apple
2) not having a DVD drive on the old machine anyway, so connecting an external DVD drive and trying to load the OS software from the DVD install disks that came with my new Mac (old Mac saw the drive, tried to open the file but didn't know how)
So I learned about making a disk image of the DVD, which I did, then learned about connecting the 2 machines via firewire and starting up the old machine as a target disk. This all seemed to be working fine. The target disk image showed up on the new machine, I was able to drag the OS disk image to it and it appeared to copy the contents to the old machine. When I unplugged the Firewire and restarted the old machine it starting booting normally then just stopped, with a "You must restart your computer" message popping up on the screen. I have tried to restart the old machine several times with the same results and have unplugged the power then tried it again as well. Being far less than an expert at this I realize there are several ways this could have gone wrong, which is why included all the info. above - just wasn't sure which actions were relevant to helping figure out what to do next to get my old machine to boot, which is my most immediate problem. Dealing with the OS upgrade issue is also a concern.

I have a G5 PowerMac from 2004 (I can provide more details about the machine if it's necessary), that has essentially broken down and I do not currently have the money to fix it. A friend of mine has a brand new Intel Mac Pro. I want to install my G5's hard drive as a second hard drive on his Mac Pro.
My questions are:
1) Is this even possible?
2) Can I do this without losing the content of my hard disk?
3) Is there an available guide, or could someone run down the detailed steps, of doing this?

I recently had to upgrade the graphics card in my Mac Pro, however it won't boot up because the OS isn't update which is what is required. I have a G5 which I have put the MacPro hard drive into so that I could boot it up, update the software and put it back in the MacPro. The G5 recognises the hard drive when it is acting as a 2nd Hard drive to the G5's original but it doesn't show it as a startup option. I have tried having just the MacPro drive in the G5 without the original hardrive but then it doesn't boot at all. Both are running 10.5 and I can't understand it won't find it.
I have tried it the other way around, the G5 hard drive in the MacPro and it works fine and when I put the MacPro hard drive in as second Hard Drive it shows up as an option for startup but doesn't work as it isn't uptodate.

I have recently purchased a USB stick so that I can plug into my tv to watch movies on. However when transferring AVI files from my Mac onto my USB stick it seems to transfer the whole file but when I try to watch it through quicktime or on TV it is unable to read the file. The thing is it is not happening to all my AVI files as some of them are able to be transferred to USB and work fine but then others are not working and I am not sure what the difference is. The AVI files all work fine on my Mac before I transfer them but something is breaking down when they are transferred.

I've just got a new Macbook. I'm trying to transfer some files from one computer to the next. I get the box asking for me to accept and it looks like it's transfering the files. But nothing happens. It just does that forever with nothing being transferred. Is there a setting I'm missing? Also, is it possible to transfer folders? In the past I could only do single files at a time.

I have a basic PC with XP and I am getting a MBP 13" tomorrow.
I have an external hard drive... Can I just put the stuff onto it (only like 40gb) and then transfer it to the Mac easily?
Or is it complicated...?
I don't care about being able to use it back and forth regularly. I just want a one time transfer.

I'm planning on buying a 17" MBP (anti-glare) in the coming weeks and my wife wants my current 15 MBP, no problem.
My question is what is the best, most efficient way to transfer all my files, programs & settings from the 15" to the 17"?
I've got the 15" setup just right (for me) as I use it for personal & business tasks. It also has Parallels w/XP that I MUST have for work. I'd really like it if all my email & password settings were able to transfer without issue as well.
Do I use Migration? restore Time Machine? or something else?
I assume then I can use the same steps to set the 15" MBP up for my wife from her iMac.
