My Powerbook G4 only turns on if the battery charger is plugged in, and if I unplug it, the computer shuts off. On the menu bar, it says charging. I know the battery has to be full. This just started happening last night. Also, I just had the hard drive replaced and I've only had it back for a couple weeks.

View 8 Replies View RelatedThe Apple one looks tempting as it comes with 6 batteries and 29€ isn't too much, plus, as usual, it looks brilliant. I looked at some 3rd party chargers as well ranging from 20€ to 40€. None of them was stunning or special by any means. Cheaper ones usually came with two or four batteries and some came without batteries. I don't really need it for else than Magic Mouse, occasionally for something else too.
View 23 Replies View RelatedSo I've got a powerbook G4, thats 8 days past its warranty. Conveniently, it now won't turn on. It won't wont boot from CD. If I turn it on, I get a gray screen that usually just turns my computer back off, if thats not the case I get a screen that shows the finder icon and a question mark and then turns off.
All it will do is boot into open firmware mode. Currently the install disc is inside of it and I've tried booting the cd using "cd:, bxi" and "dir hd", and it can't open both. Does anyone know how to wipe the HD, and start the installer using firmware? Otherwise, I think I'll have to take out the harddrive and plug it into an external case and then wipe it.
My iPod Touch only turns on when its docked on my radio/ipod dock but will immediately turn off as soon as I take it from it. It won't even turn on and sync when connected to my macbook. The iPod has never had battery problems or anything else wrong with it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 17" PB with a couple of growing issues. Right now I am unable to use it for one of several reasons. About a year ago I purchased a charger off of Ebay to replace the original one that started sparking. Shortly after I received the new charger I started having issues with the charger connecting. I would have to twist it and turn it to find the right spot. Now, it doesn't glow green or amber at all. That sweet spot is completely gone. Also, the battery is completely dead. It needs to be replaced. Not sure at this point if I'm sitting on a dead charger or if I need to replace the DC-In board. I have never had a major accident with the machine but I do recall snagging the chord once or twice. It is possible something was damaged inside when that happened. I've never had an issue like this so I'm not too sure about the symptoms. I'm thinking a new charger would be the cheapest and safest start. I don't feel very confident purchasing one from Ebay again.

It has been acting very temperamental during startup where it will not startup at all, the fan will come on but no screen, or it will chime twice (and it's a weird sounding chime) and not startup, or it will freeze after logging in or during the log in stage. I got it to boot up once, but since then... it's dead. It will not startup. A friend tells me it's the internal lithium (PRAM?) battery that needs to be replaced

I've read various consumer reports that laptop batteries these days (regardless of computer brand) only last 2-3 years, so this disappointingly seems to be the norm.A replacement battery from Apple costs quite a bit, so I can't help but think that if I replace the battery cells inside the battery casing myself I could save a bundle. This and this site shows how, but so far I haven't found anything specific concerning the Powerbook G4 battery. Does anyone here have more info on the subject?
By the way, what's the best way to "reset" the battery? My Mac seems to be uncertain of how much power the battery actually has (it might show 45 minutes left, then suddenly turn off) -or maybe this is just a sign of a worn out battery.
Some days ago i finally added a Powerbook g4 to my Mac collection and since then ive been trying to fix this computer without any results. The Powerbook had the battery dead at first and i had to replace it with a new one i had. Now the problem/weird thing is that the computer detects the battery but it doesnt charge. It has about 18% of the charge and when i try to boot up all i hear is like a fan sound and nothing more, no boot up sound and no image on the screen.
If i boot up using the power cable thats when i see the 18% of the battery icon, but as soon as i take out the power cord, the image goes black although the computer still makes sounds as if it was on. Does it have any solution? PS: ive tried to reset the PMU,changed the pRam for a new one, reset the Nvram.
I have and old, but powerful, powerbook g4 667 (gigabit ethernet) with leopard 10.5.2 and runs well, but the battery is crazy:

I am constantly having problems with the laptop shutting down when it is just on battery. It doesn't do this if I am plugged into power.
It does this on a random basis whatever program I am running but generally at 80%. I currently have Leopard as the operating system.
I have a 1.33ghz 12inch Powerbook with 768mb of RAM, my battery lasts for about 20 minutes, I am on my 4th ac adapter (and it is already broken again, I so get why they made them magnetic in future laptops). I am running Tiger... everything works just fine except the embarrassing battery life and unpredictable charging (b/c of the semi-broken power adapter).

The battery is showing a full charge. The light on the plug is green. But the second I unplug the cord from the laptop, the entire thing shuts down.

It used to stay green when the laptop was charged but now it turns off. It usually happens when I put the computer to sleep. After a while the charger light turns off. Not a huge issue but I was wondering if other people were seeing something similar and if there was something I could do to get the light back on (I think it looks nice).

My Macbook Pro (Mid 2010 model) will not turn on unless I connect the Magsafe charger into it. If my macbook is off, and I connect the charger - it will turn itself on without me having to press the power button? I was over 400 cycles, so I had to just buy it, they wouldn't replace it for me. I expected that, so no big deal. But I wanted to treat this battery right. I got home, charged it up to 100%, let it sit at that for a few hours, and then let it drain overnight and rest at empty for a few hours. This afternoon, I plugged it back in with the intention of letting it fully charge and thus complete my battery calibration, but at around 40% charged, the cat yanked the charger cable out from my laptop. And then a little bit later, my girlfriend did it again. So, has my time been wasted here? Battery calibration is such a pain in my rear. i hate it. I use my laptop often and expect it to be available to me whenever I need it, regardless of how many other computers i own. I really don't want to deal with it again in the near future. And I may not.

(Was letting my roomates use the computer, came home one day and it started doing this.) I believe that my battery is OK, it performs between 97% and 99% consistently. When I do the battery test, all of the lights light up.
I've read through the forums and it seems a lot of people are having this problem, but their batteries are bad. What are some options/solutions to this problem? I am willing to invest money wisely into the computer to keep it running smoothly for a while.
I've tried two brand new adapters and neither work after my MBP is unplugged for a few hours and then plugged back in. Eventually it'll work again, but occasionally it doesn't acknowledge the power source. Will AppleCare cover this?

When i unplug the power adapter it works fine, but at about 80% battery it shuts off. i go to turn it back on and it acts as if it is dead, i press the power button again and it turns on without problem (although the date and time at first is messed up). What is wrong? I recently had to get my hard drive replaced 2 months ago and it has been working fine until yesterday.

So I usually keep my UMBP plugged in at all times. It unplugged by accident and went to 99% so I left it unplugged but literally less then maybe 7 minutes my battery is already reading down to 92%. Brightness on screen is set all the way up, if that has anything to do with it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedFirstly i have a MacBook 10.4.11 that is somewhere between 2 and 3 years old. I have had no problems with the Mac up until yesterday. Yesterday i was charging my Mac and everything was fine but i noticed that the MagSafe Adapter was lit up Green, even when unplugged from my Mac. I shrugged it off until this morning when i realised that when i unplug my adapter the Mac just turns off and won't turn back on until i plug the adapter back in. I have seen different threads about it being a battery problem or a charger problem but i am not sure where to start as most of the threads say that their Battery Icon on the Mac screen has a black "X" through it. Mine just has the Forks in the battery icon and where it would have a Time or % of what is left in the Battery, it just has a (Calculating...) and when i click to see how much it has charged, it says 0%
