I recently purchased a Powerbook G4 1.5Gz 12" but it will not turn on unless it is plugged in. once turned on, i can unplug it and it runs on its battery just fine though?? it also can't seem to remember the date and my internet connection each time i turn it on.
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to record something through the internal mic (and I'm too cheap to go out and buy a proper mic) and I was wondering if there is anyway through Terminal,or an external program, to force the fans to shut off for a certain period of time? I don't want to turn them off to find they can't turn back on and suddenly the computer is 1000�...I just want to keep them off to have a minimal amount of background noise. (And, yes, I'll be running it in a moderate climate so the computer doesn't overheat).

View 3 Replies View RelatedIt just started getting really hot quickly for about a week before it didn't turn on. I would have it tilted so that its not flat, hoping that it would give it more air but it didn't do anything. I don't even need to do much to get it really hot. And I shut it off every night, so it should get to reset itself. I haven't done anything different that I haven't before. Any fixes please!? Also what's really weird is that it gets hotter and hotter even when it is off and not even plugged in.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a PowerBook G4 1.67 that shut itself down sometime during the day yesterday, and will not power back up. It's completely unresponsive to the power button, with no signs of life whatsoever.
I've tried resetting the PMU. There has been no new hardware or software installed. This has been tried with 2 batteries, and 2 AC power supplies.
There is inconsistency with the color of the AC power supply tip, as it doesn't seem to indicate the strength of the battery. Regardless of which battery or how much charge is left, the tip is Green, and will flicker Yellow very quickly once, when plugged in. It was Green following the initial shutdown, Yellow when I placed a dead battery in it, and then eventually turned Green. Now, it seems permanently in the Green / flicker Yellow state.
It did fully charge one battery while like this.
Does anyone know if there's anyway to turn on an aluminum powerbook without the power button? I mean is there any keystroke combination that can turn a powerbook on?

It can't be unplugged for more than 5 seconds or it shuts off...been this way for months. Well today it shut off and won't turn back on. Do I buy yet another battery or is my pb dead?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI bought a powerbook off ebay, it worked but on startup occasionally a folder icon would appear. I rebooted from the original discs which seemed to do the trick. However the original discs are too old for many of my apps, so I bought some newer install discs (osx 10.5) I put the install disk in and got the panic message 'panic: Im hanging here'
The answer seems to be to run a disk repair (am i right?) However to do that I need to eject the install disc, I can't get the install disk out and of course it keeps tripping up everytime I start it. There is no secret little button to eject the disk manually. I have tried holding down apple and S but the install disk over rides everything and trips the mac up. I think ill be okay if I can just get this disk out.
I just aquired a PowerBook G4 (500Mhz) and it is dead. It will not turn on no matter what I try and when I plug in the power adaptor it glows a bright orange (almost red)...what does that mean?
For the past few months i have been using an external display hooked up to my 12" powerbook g4. I have had it on a dual display mode so no mirroring. Recently i would open the laptop lid waking it from being in sleep mode and my internal display will not turn on. The apply system profiler does not even recognize that the internal display exists. My external display works fine and has always been set as the main display. If i go to detect displays nothign happens. I have tried restarting the computer, instering system disks, unplugging the external and nothing has worked. I simply cannot get my internal screen to fire back up. When i used to unplug my external display the internal display would switch back to being the main display and everything would be fine. Now i cannot get the internal display to function whatsoever. Please try and help me as a need this laptop working and i will be ordering a mac pro soon for use with my external display.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an early 2008 Macbook and it's been running pretty good up until this afternoon. Now I'm having what is apparently not all that uncommon a problem, where my laptop will only remain turned on for as long as my laptop is plugged in. The second I remove the charger it turns off, and it won't turn back on again until I plug the charger in again. I had bought a replacement battery not all that long ago so I'm not sure if that would be the issue. It could be related that last night I installed more RAM into my laptop. I say could be because I was using the laptop NOT plugged in for the rest of the night and most of the this morning without any problems. It wasn't until this afternoon when I started using my laptop again that the problem arose. Could this be a delayed reaction to the RAM installation or is it just a coincidence and there's a problem with my battery?

My iPad works while it's plugged in, however when I take it off the charger, power it down then try to power on let's say an hour later, it will not turn on unless connected to the charger. When I power it off it has over 50% battery life.

I closed the computer and came back an hour later, and the light on the charger was still green and not amber. View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I plug it in, the computer makes a horrrible noise, and then when I press the power button, it flashes, and the noise becomes much louder. It origionally turned on to the hd selection screen when I first got it, and I accidentally left it on all day. When I got home, it was making the noise. I know it is not the hard drive, because it dieson't have one, and Imacs don't have fans.

I was launching my sims game when I plugged in my portable charger in my MacBook Pro. As soon as I plugged it in, I heard a tiny poof and next thing I know the screen turned black. I held down the power button like I normally would and it wouldn't work. when I plug in the charger, there is a faint green light.

I replaced the hard disk with a new 250GB one, and after putting everything back in place I put the OSX install CD in the harddrive and tried to turn the computer on...it wouldn't turn on so I left it for about 10 minutes. When I came back I tried again and it worked this time, and booted into the Open Firmware... then it suddenly turned off again. Then, about 2 minutes later again, it turned on again, and it went into the OSX installer. I partitioned the hard drive and was about to start the installation process, but before I could press the install button the computer turned off again. Now it has been like this for over 2 hours and refuses to turn on at all. I have tried resetting the PRAM but it makes no difference. I've tried taking out the battery and all sorts of things but nothing works. I'm at my wits end now
Had (used) iBook G4 several months now & thoroughly enjoy it, even tho' I live in the sticks where there's no hi-speed/wireless available; I connect to internet & power, which is fine.
This weekend I went to turn off my iBook & it wouldn't turn off. It's now permanently on, with opening info barely visible (like I need to click on F2 to brighten up, except nothing happens).
Currently using my "back up" computer, my iMac Grape, which is pretty much an antique by now.
My 12 inch powerbook does not start up. Instead it loads to Darwin. I have an install disk from a 15 inch powerbook G4 and I would like to know if using this would work on my 12 inch powerbook G4?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm getting a 1.25Ghz 15" Al Powerbook assuming I can fix it. It's got one major problem - it won't charge the battery, or see that it's plugged in. This problem just happened suddenly, it wasn't a gradual thing at all, and there was no physical damage that caused it. The Powerbook still booted and worked fine off of a freshly charged battery, but the computer won't charge that battery anymore.
I think it's a broken DC-in board that needs to be replaced, but before I dump $50 - $75 on a new one, can anyone tell me if it might be something else, maybe something I could check for free?

View 2 Replies View Relatedfor some reason my powerbook battery charge slowly goes down even while it's plugged in. The power light is green as if it's fully charged but it goes down about 1% every day and then if i unplug it and plug it back in then it starts to charge, goes up to 100% like it should and then starts all over again. It never used to do this so i don't know why it's doing it now.
It started happening around the time apple had that huge recall so then i got it replaced but it still does it so it can't be the batteries fault (at least it doesn't seem likely)
A buddy of mine has had a Power Mac G4 sitting around for a while now. I asked him about it, and he told me that I could have it if I wanted. He really only uses his MacBook Pro anyways. So, I get home, plug it all in, and nothing happens. I opened up the side and everything seems to be in place. There seem to be 2 hard drives, one which isn't screwed in. One of them isn't plugged in, I'm not too sure what that's about. Power supply is there, RAM is there. I don't know why it's not coming on. When I push the power button, a light on the front flashes for a second, but nothing happens. I know it needs a RAM upgrade, and probably a processor upgrade as well. However, first, I'd like to get it running first.

1) The charger is fine since I checked it on another iBook. (Light comes on and changes appropriately.)
2) I have multiple batteries so any one individual battery is not the problem. Also it registers the proper charge capacity.
3) I've reset the PMU and it does not help.
