I've upgraded my HD two days ago. Today my PB suddenly turned off and won't turn back on. All the connectors are in the right places and nothing looks wrong inside. I have no idea what's happened.
View 3 RepliesI'm trying to record something through the internal mic (and I'm too cheap to go out and buy a proper mic) and I was wondering if there is anyway through Terminal,or an external program, to force the fans to shut off for a certain period of time? I don't want to turn them off to find they can't turn back on and suddenly the computer is 1000�...I just want to keep them off to have a minimal amount of background noise. (And, yes, I'll be running it in a moderate climate so the computer doesn't overheat).
View 7 Replies View RelatedIt just started getting really hot quickly for about a week before it didn't turn on. I would have it tilted so that its not flat, hoping that it would give it more air but it didn't do anything. I don't even need to do much to get it really hot. And I shut it off every night, so it should get to reset itself. I haven't done anything different that I haven't before. Any fixes please!? Also what's really weird is that it gets hotter and hotter even when it is off and not even plugged in.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a PowerBook G4 1.67 that shut itself down sometime during the day yesterday, and will not power back up. It's completely unresponsive to the power button, with no signs of life whatsoever.
I've tried resetting the PMU. There has been no new hardware or software installed. This has been tried with 2 batteries, and 2 AC power supplies.
There is inconsistency with the color of the AC power supply tip, as it doesn't seem to indicate the strength of the battery. Regardless of which battery or how much charge is left, the tip is Green, and will flicker Yellow very quickly once, when plugged in. It was Green following the initial shutdown, Yellow when I placed a dead battery in it, and then eventually turned Green. Now, it seems permanently in the Green / flicker Yellow state.
It did fully charge one battery while like this.
Does anyone know if there's anyway to turn on an aluminum powerbook without the power button? I mean is there any keystroke combination that can turn a powerbook on?

It can't be unplugged for more than 5 seconds or it shuts off...been this way for months. Well today it shut off and won't turn back on. Do I buy yet another battery or is my pb dead?

I bought a powerbook off ebay, it worked but on startup occasionally a folder icon would appear. I rebooted from the original discs which seemed to do the trick. However the original discs are too old for many of my apps, so I bought some newer install discs (osx 10.5) I put the install disk in and got the panic message 'panic: Im hanging here'
The answer seems to be to run a disk repair (am i right?) However to do that I need to eject the install disc, I can't get the install disk out and of course it keeps tripping up everytime I start it. There is no secret little button to eject the disk manually. I have tried holding down apple and S but the install disk over rides everything and trips the mac up. I think ill be okay if I can just get this disk out.
first off is it even possible and/or worth it? I have an old powerbook 500 and it's kind of beat up and i was thinkink of selling it but why not try to upgrade it to a Intel mac (if i can) and if i can where can i get some parts?

I have tons of pics and music and i have been faced with the predicament of either upgrading the RAM or just shelling out the extra money for a new computer. I run a lot of of my music programs on there as well (ie. Reason, ProTools) So what would you do? A few Mac people have told me to just upgrade the the ram and you'll see a huge difference and i'd be happy.

I've searched high and low for any and all alternatives to working with my, shall we say, "experienced" Powerbook Titanium, despite it's age(it's not old, it's chronologically advanced!). After looking things up and being able to think of nothing, I figured I'd finally register here and hope for some good advice from people who possibly know more about Mac hardware than I do.I received my laptop in June of 2002(it was likely bought either that month or April) from my father. As far as I was aware, it was a brand new Powerbook bought from Comp USA...with the latest specs and peripherals at the time. After 7 years of using and loving my laptop(despite the fact the battery is completely dead, both hinges are broken and removed to keep the wires from accidentally being cut until I can afford new ones, and the CD drive no longer working), it's come to a point where I'm needing to try to breath even a little new-found life into my true love...or be stuck using "The Rex", my overbearing Desktop PC with its snooty Windows XP and massive noise-creating fans.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor the past few months i have been using an external display hooked up to my 12" powerbook g4. I have had it on a dual display mode so no mirroring. Recently i would open the laptop lid waking it from being in sleep mode and my internal display will not turn on. The apply system profiler does not even recognize that the internal display exists. My external display works fine and has always been set as the main display. If i go to detect displays nothign happens. I have tried restarting the computer, instering system disks, unplugging the external and nothing has worked. I simply cannot get my internal screen to fire back up. When i used to unplug my external display the internal display would switch back to being the main display and everything would be fine. Now i cannot get the internal display to function whatsoever. Please try and help me as a need this laptop working and i will be ordering a mac pro soon for use with my external display.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having a MAJOR difficulty with my Powerbook G4 17" (1.67GHz) after replacing the Hard Disk...
I replaced the hard disk with a new 250GB one, and after putting everything back in place I put the OSX install CD in the harddrive and tried to turn the computer on...it wouldn't turn on so I left it for about 10 minutes. When I came back I tried again and it worked this time, and booted into the Open Firmware... then it suddenly turned off again. Then, about 2 minutes later again, it turned on again, and it went into the OSX installer. I partitioned the hard drive and was about to start the installation process, but before I could press the install button the computer turned off again. Now it has been like this for over 2 hours and refuses to turn on at all. I have tried resetting the PRAM but it makes no difference. I've tried taking out the battery and all sorts of things but nothing works. I'm at my wits end now
Had (used) iBook G4 several months now & thoroughly enjoy it, even tho' I live in the sticks where there's no hi-speed/wireless available; I connect to internet & power, which is fine.
This weekend I went to turn off my iBook & it wouldn't turn off. It's now permanently on, with opening info barely visible (like I need to click on F2 to brighten up, except nothing happens).
Currently using my "back up" computer, my iMac Grape, which is pretty much an antique by now.
My 12 inch powerbook does not start up. Instead it loads to Darwin. I have an install disk from a 15 inch powerbook G4 and I would like to know if using this would work on my 12 inch powerbook G4?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Powerbook G4 1.5 w/ 1GB of RAM and the stock 80GB HD. I've run this puppy pretty hard for a couple of years now, and it's lately started to lag a bit - perfectly natural. I was considering buying a new notebook but I've decided to wait until after Leopard comes. So my question is:
1) How do I determine the max RAM I can put in this machine?
2) Are there are specific specs I need to be concerned with when swapping out the Hard Drive? Any type, size limitations, speed limitations, etc.
I'd love a little input as to how I find out this info. I think instead of taking the notebook plunge now, I'm going to put a nice new hard drive in this one and possibly bump up the RAM a little more if it will take it.
So is the is Powerbook G4 802.11g or b? it is the 1.25GHz model. Also, one thing I don't understand regarding the airport extreme or any airport for that matter: isn't the maximum speed going to be completely determined by how much the cable provider, Comcast, pumps out?
If this is the case, how do I determine what my transfers and speeds are looking like specifically for Comcast? And, how would an airport extreme improve upon this or any other performance aspect in this regard?
Powerbook G4 (Ti-book) 667 mhz, 512 mb RAM. I finally after YEARS upgraded my OS (10.4.10), yay me! Just bought Adobe CS3 (for the new IMAC we have yet to buy), but I would like to install it on my Powerbook. SO, it it time to bump up to 1GB RAM. I was told it was tricky, and I should take it in to the apple store to install, but then I took a look under the keyboard, and it looks pretty simple. i have installed new RAM on a G5 tower, and this looks way easier. So, I am planning on buying the RAM either online or at FRY's, then installing it. BUT, I know I have to be careful of what type of RAM to buy. I found what I think will be good at [URL] but I will have to buy 2 (512's) as mine currently has 2 (256). I guess I just want to make sure I am not going about this the wrong way before I drop about $200 for RAM upgrade...
