I have an old Titanium Powerbook that wont startup. I haven't used it in about a year.
I've tried keeping it on charge for a day with and without the main battery inserted (which was knackered before I stopped using it anyway).
Any thoughts on what could be wrong with it? An internal battery problem?
My former, babied, 400mhz overclocked by Daystar to 550mhz Titanium Powerbook has a fried logic board. Can I put a the old low resolution Tibook screen on a 1ghz Tibook body with a higher resolution screen?
Would it just power on at the lower resolution or is this just idiotic?
I have a 400 mhz Titanium powerbook I'm trying to resurrect for my teen daughter. Just replaced the internal pram battery, the external regular battery, and the a/c cord, all with brand new parts. The book was dead, and now I have power but not much more.
When pressing the power button I get one chime, and then I can hear the fan working, but no hard drive sounds. The screen is black.
Eventually, when left sitting, the thing will turn itself off. It seems as if it is not booting completely, but then I can't see anything. I am used to hearing hard drive pops and whirrs though, and nothing here.
1. I tried resetting the PMU with the button on the back of the unit.
2. I tried resetting the pram with cmd/opt/p/r before power, but no matter how long I hold I only ever get one chime.
3. Tried booting with my OS Tiger retail CD (which is what is installed) and the drive barely spins, and the screen remains black. Holding C doesn't help.
4. The new battery is charging normally.
5. I tried removing the two ram sticks, moving them around from slot to slot, and using one ram or the other. Nada.
6. Tried forcing shutdown by holding power button 10 secs, then rebooting. In fact, that's how I have to shut it down when I need to, since I can't see anything.
This laptop has been in storage for about a year. This is the same problem I had when I put it away. I think perhaps the laptop might have been knocked off the coffee table and fell about 2 feet to the floor a short time before these problems. I heard it, but the kids won't admit it. *grin* It worked fine for about a week or so, then began losing video at startup.
I just spent about $75 in parts. Should I maybe try a new PMU board before chucking the thing? Any other ideas what might be happening?
I've read till my eyes are blue, and can't seem to find a boot issue with one chime on this machine.
Does anyone know if I can swap a VGA Tibook LCD screen onto a DVI Titanium Powerbook? Is the higher resolution in the screen set up itself? I actually wouldn't mind at all if it would work because I actually like the lower res screens of the earlier tibooks. Just wondering if it can be done.. and I don't mean taking out the actual LCD screen itself from the Tibook case and frame, I mean actually SWAPPING the LCDs and plugging them in. I just wonder if the older LCD could be plugged into the logic board or not. It seems that they would fit the case. I'd really like a faster DVI Tibook with the lower res screen because the font sizes are larger.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am (or was) sure that I could - be a recent experience with a new (TN panel) LG LCD monitor 20.6inch 1600 x 1050 native res. (LG L204WT) has sown some doubts. Basically, the external monitor would go blank after a few minutes or secs after scrolling around opening windows etc. Not to powersaving mode but just blank. Only unplugging the DVI cable, rebooting the powerbook and reconnecting the DVI would bring it back to life, only for same thing to happen.

The original drive is a Matshita CW-8121 but I can't find any for sale, what can I replace it with that's current and supported? And pref cheap on Ebay.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have the 1GHz Ti Book, 15", 1GB PC133 memory, 60GB 4200 RPM drive, Tiger, and it's awesome. Battery is basically dead (10 min). I do typical web/email stuff.I also do some music recording and it works fine. Watching video is difficult on [URL] though. I need to upgrade to Leopard as I want to start doing Web Development using Rapid Weaver. The new version of Rapid Weaver requires Leopard. So, while I'm planning on purchasing a new machine soon, I wonder if it's worth spending the money to:
1) buy Leopard for my TiBook (are there performance issues?)
2) buy a 7200RPM drive (for performance)
in order to run Rapid Weaver 4.0 or not.
So my Pismo died shortly after I added an addtional 133Mhz 256MB RAM module to it. Don't know if the daughter card CPU connector socket is no longer making excellent contact, or I just static electricity shorted it (RAM transfered to new TiBook works just fine, so probably something more serious like logic board or PS gradually dying was what lead to kernal panics and finally only booting up to chime sound and black screen)...but long story short after lots of searching/troublshooting, I got a used 'dealer refurbished' 1Ghz TiBook from Wegener Media. Cost more than a alum PB, but it's the fastest dual boot (yes, I know, but I still want OS9.2 bootability) laptop in Apple's line. Only problem when I received the system, I did Apple Profile on it, and found no Airport Card installed. Sent an email to Wegener and got a reply that there were at least 9 different configurations of 1Ghz Tibooks, and that Airport Cards where a "CTO (configure to order) optional, not stock, item"...in Wegener's words.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've searched high and low for any and all alternatives to working with my, shall we say, "experienced" Powerbook Titanium, despite it's age(it's not old, it's chronologically advanced!). After looking things up and being able to think of nothing, I figured I'd finally register here and hope for some good advice from people who possibly know more about Mac hardware than I do.I received my laptop in June of 2002(it was likely bought either that month or April) from my father. As far as I was aware, it was a brand new Powerbook bought from Comp USA...with the latest specs and peripherals at the time. After 7 years of using and loving my laptop(despite the fact the battery is completely dead, both hinges are broken and removed to keep the wires from accidentally being cut until I can afford new ones, and the CD drive no longer working), it's come to a point where I'm needing to try to breath even a little new-found life into my true love...or be stuck using "The Rex", my overbearing Desktop PC with its snooty Windows XP and massive noise-creating fans.

The computer works, I can run programs and so forth. There are no changes to the displays settings, still 1280x854 and colors "millions". When I switch to thousand or 256 colors there is no significant change.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy TiBook 15" G4 (OSX 10.4.8) has an Airport slot but no Airport card. I got a Sonnet Aria Extreme card but it shows nothing on the TiBook � not in the menu bar or in System Profiler. I've tried restarting with and without the card inserted. The Sonnet support guy suggested everything I had already done and then came up with "Check under the keyboard to be sure the cardbus connection was intact." Seems fine. I'm assuming the card has the Broadcom chipset because they swear it works fine on the 15" TiBook G4.
Also, Airport software is updated, but doesn't show or function because it doesn't see any wireless capability.
Like everybody else who gets frustrated, I've also done everything again 4-5 times, just in case the computer or the card might forget that it doesn't work.
My brother's iBook G4 (I think it's a 2003 model) has a problem with the screen. When the computer is turned on, the screen stays black, although the backlight is on (the apple glows). Sometimes, on start up, the screen works normally for a random amount of time before going fuzzy and then black again.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Is it likely to be a problem with the hardware in the actual computer, or just the screen? Or is it a software thing?
So here's the deal. I have an 800mhz tIbook that I had to replace the DVD/CDrom drive and hard drive to get working properly.After I did that I've been having issues with the backlight. It worked fine for a couple of days then started blanking out. The machine would boot and it would be on for a second, then blank out (just the backlight, not the LCD itself). So I know it's CAPABLE of working. I took the machine apart a few more times and couldn't find a pinched wire or bad contact or anything.
Thoughts on what the issue could be? It's driving me up a wall. The only thing I can think to do at this point is to replace the backlight inverter board (the thing attached to the CD-Rom drive) as well as the wire that connects it to the logic board.Is there anything that I'm not thinking of? I'm so annoyed because it did work just fine for a day before doing this!
I have a very old PowerBook that did have OSX running on it fine. Recently it has stopped working completely and when you startup it takes you to a blue screen with a question mark and a finder icon flashing on top of a folder. If you give it long enough it will just shut off. I have tried booting from a CD but I can't seem to get that to work. I boot up holding down the option key and it brings me to a window with a picture of my hard drive and a picture of the CD drive but when I click the cd drive and then click the forward button it merely acts like it's refreshing the list and doesn't actually boot from the CD at all. I've also tried holding down C during boot up but it ignores that and just goes to the same old flashing question mark and finder icon screen. The CD I am trying to boot from is the same OSX cd that I originally installed OSX on this computer from so I know it works.

I need a new LCD, but I'm not sure if I need one from the specific DVI model, or if any 15" screen will work (from a TiBook). I think I'm going to need the DVI LCD, but the other LCDs are a lot cheaper, so I wanted to ask.

When I push the start up button, nothing happens. If I pull the power plug then reconnect it, the computer will start using the start up button on the front, but I noticed the start up chime is different (like older G4's) and the big fan doesn't start. Also icons in the dock don't bounce. If I then restart using the apple menu, the normal chime comes on, icons react normally, but the big fan still doesn't work.
Just had the big fan replaced so I wondering if I have bigger issues lurking.
I recently reinstalled a clean Tiger on my old MDD G4 with the intent on giving it to a friend of mine in Oregon. Everything was smooth here in Los Angeles. Got the OS on and running sweet... 10.4.11 combo update... all's well.
I drive up to Oregon, set it up in his office using his old CRT monitor and power it on. It chimes and manages to find the Tech Tool eDrive recovery partition, but not the OS on the boot drive. Then, seconds later, screen of death/kernel panic and no boots or startup chimes thereafter.
Steps I've taken:
I have reset the PMU
I have removed all peripherals, including viddy, SATA adapter and all but on stick of RAM
Tried every stick of RAM by itself
No startup chime -- just a fan for a few seconds then a super fan kicks in... no signal to monitor at all.
Strange symptom: at times power was making it to the drives, and other times not. (determined by me putting my hand on the drive to feel its vibration or lack thereof during boot).
Do I need a new PSU? And if so where to buy?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an iBook g3 running Tiger that I bought second hand almost two years ago that has been working perfectly up until yesterday. I use it for uni during the day and usually turn the machine off overnight while it charges. The other night I left it 'asleep' while charging instead of off. When I came to use it in the morning it would not wake up and was totally silent although it's pulsing 'on' light in the front part of the casing was on. The charging cable was still connected and was green, indicating a full charge, but the battery-life light display, when pressed, showed only a single light, which flashds a few times, indicating the battery wasn't fully charged.
While trying to get the thing to do something I removed the battery. This caused the ibook to turn off the pulsating light - it was completely off and apparently not drawing power from it's adapter, which was still plugged in. I have been trying since then to get the computer to turn on. No matter how long it is left charging, the battery never indicates anything other than a single light with a few flashes, the computer will not turn on and the cable of the charger stays green when plugged in. I have tried inserting an older battery - which I know worked, it just only used to hold an hour's charge or so - and it will not charge at all. I have also tried resetting the PMU, which appears to have done nothing
my G4 quicksilver has resently decided that it doesnt want to work. when i press the power button the light and fans come on but then cut out again after about a second. any ideas?

A few months ago i replaced both internal hdd's to 500gb and it has 2x1gb of ram. Its running Tiger and i would not like to update to leopard because i need os9 support.What could be causing the slow startup?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Power Mac (2x2GHz G5, Late 2005 model) is acting strange since a couple of days when I want to start it up. When I press the power button the white light comes on for a short time and goes off again. When I press again and hold the button the white and the red light come on, usually also the startup chime sounds, and then the lights go off again. When I repeat the action the computer eventually starts and boots normally and then works normally. Sometimes it works already the second time, sometimes I have to try more times.
Does anybody here know or have an idea what this might be and wether I can repair it myself?
My computer crashed today and hasn't been able to boot back up since. It gets to the grey screen with the Apple logo and stops. The fan then ramps itself up to overdrive.
I've started it up in target disk mode and repaired it using Diskwarrior on my macbook. It had to repair quite a bit and then it showed up on the desktop of the laptop. I can read, write and pull from it. I then ejected the powermac and started it up again to find the same problem persisting.
I got a powerbook G4 with a smashed LCD. I hooked it up to an external monitor, and 1 thing keeps bothering me - it lags like hell. I have had an iBook g3, now using macbook aluminum, and I have never seen anything like this on a mac before. It lags like hell - it turns on in about 20 minutes. Sometimes it even doesn't. I have tried resetting Pram, Vram, premissions repair, looking @ activity monitor(nothing exceeding 2-3%). HDD capacity - about 55% full. I cant even describe whats up with it - launching any app takes about 2-3 minutes. For instance, iTunes launching takes 3,5 minutes and none of the songs are playable. I have tried to create a new account - did not help.
So lets start with system preferences. I have :

So at first I though it was the lack of RAM - I bought a 1Gb stick. Now I am thinking it is because of the HDD. But I am not ready to buy another component randomly.
I've got a 1st generation iMac G5 (I think, from 2004) running 10.4.x that has become 'the family' computer since I upgraded this past winter. I haven't been keeping up with updates and decided about 3 weeks ago to finally go through and update everything; had been at least 4 mo.s since the last update and udates included Java Script, iTunes and a Security Update. I started downloading the updates then quit Safari (which had previously been running) walked away to do other things around the house (since it would take a while) and when I came back I had an error message that the logout (to restart - which was required for the Security Update) had timed out because Safari would/could not quit. I clicked OK, force quit Safari and shut down the computer (since no one was going to be using it for the rest of the day and a restart was required anyway).
Came back the next day to startup the computer and it just hung at the blue screen with the mouse arrow. Assuming there was something wrong with the update that was just installed OR the startup disk I reset the PRAM/NVRAM: no change. Tried starting in safe mode: wouldn't (and still won't) move past the blue screen with spinning gear. Tried to boot from install disc to repair the HDD with Disk Utility: Couldn't repair the disk volume (Invalid leaf record count: should be 13 was 1203). Tried single user fsck: scanned twice and reported volume repaired, went to restart - still hangs, tried to boot in safe mode again - still hangs at blue screen with spinning gear. And that's where I'm at now. Anyone got any good other ideas out there? I've searched a lot and haven't found anything I haven't tried. I'm guessing the installed update(s) never completely installed and screwed something up on the startup disk. But I can't access ANYTHING to figure out if that was the problem. I would really like to keep this computer for the kids but don't want to spend any money on it if I can avoid it.
I recently acquired an eMac that was said to be working, but when I try to start it up, all I get is a beep or two, and nothing further. The machine is (I was told, I haven't been able to verify due to startup issues) OSX 10.4, 1.25 GHz. I put 256 mb RAM in, and I know that particular RAM stick works, b/c I used it successfully in my other 700 mhz eMac.
Shouldn't the machine start up without beeps once the RAM is in? I can't even get to the startup chime, so I can't do safe mode, FTM, or anything... When I push the power button, I hear the CRT firing up (but no picture displays), the fan comes on, and the white light on front comes on. After a few seconds, the machine beeps, and does nothing further... just that little white light mocking me.
i recently bought a secondhand mac g4/400 and ive been trying to startup to install tiger (am using a macbook pro for work). i tried both of the ultra ata 'bays' but am wondering whether normal IDE drives will work?
i have:
1X western digital (caviar) enhanced IDE drive and
1X seagate normal IDE drive (ST340015A)
the cd-rom works fine on its own and can boot up with panther install discs but when selecting startup disc there is nothing. I connected the cdrom to the far end of the cable (set jumper to master) and WD E-IDE drive to the second 'block' (set as slave)
i am under the assumption that because the cdrom works there is nothing wrong with the cables.
on boot up I cant select the startup drive (just network) as there is only one device detected (CDROM) if harddrives are disconnected
I get the network folder first on boot up then question mark/folder icon
not quite sure how to proceed from here. is formatting a must for the normal IDE drive? or will the mac pick it up regardless.
I connected both drives to existing cables and the normal IDE drive also to IDE (PC) cable also reset the PMU/SMU as well as took out all daughterboards and tested RAM which appears to be ok. i also took out the battery and put it back.
the PSU seems fine, but is there a way i can check with diagnostics or something..
So I bought a "new" PowerMac G4. I have two already.
The guy said it was running os 9 but now it wouldn't boot. I figured it needed an OS and the guy was wrong. I try to boot it up...

So I go thru all hell trying to install os x and what not.
It won't boot to the install CD. I finally got it to boot from my other Powermac's HD with OS X on it, but I can't seem to install OS X on this other HD, but that's not really what I'm asking here...
When I startup the PM and hold Option, nothing happens with either HD installed!!! No boot menu comes up.
Also when I hold down C, nothing happens at least nothing different. It doesn't boot to the CD.
Why is this?
Sometimes it seems to boot to my HD OS X and sometimes it boots to the CD on it's own. I can't choose what I want it to boot to unless I start the OS X and select it from there.
I cannot get the Classic environment to not automatically start when either I restart or turn on my PowerBook.
I've had this problem ever since someone needed to use my computer with a program that was for a prior operating system, once we found out that the only way for it to work on my Mac would be to wipe my current operating system and revert back to the Classic operating system, which of course at that point we stopped with the process.
Ever since then, the 9 is always bouncing in my dock, and when I go into system preferences I cannot uncheck the "Start Classic when you login" option, it is greyed out for some reason.
