PowerPC :: G5 Won't Wake From Sleep - Fans Go Insanely Fast
Jul 13, 2010This problem just started happening on my 2005 Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3Ghz Processors.
I activate sleep, and it refuses to wake up again. Then after a few minutes the fans slowly increase in speed until the computer begins to sound like an aeroplane taking off, at which point I'm forced to perform a forced shutdown.
I've resetted the PMU and it doesn't seem to have worked. It is fully up-to-date in Software Update and is running the latest version of OS X Leopard.
PowerPC :: Headphones Not Stay Fixed In Jack
Aug 1, 2006Over the past few weeks, I've noticed problems with my PowerBook's headphone jack. The headphone plugs don't stay seated in the jack, resulting in loss of audio in either one ear or both until I adjust the plug, at which point it will almost always happen again. I usually end up having to hold the plug in place to get consistent sound from both ears.
At first, I thought it was just my headphones, so I borrowed a couple pairs from friends and ordered a backup pair from Amazon, all with the same results. I've peeked inside the jack once or twice and everything looks fine...but what do I know? I'll be in downtown Chicago tomorrow and Thursday, so I plan on making a trip to the Apple Store, but is there anything else I should try beforehand? As I recall, the PB headphone jack is part of the logic board, correct?

Jun 22, 2014Specs: Mid-2012 13'' Macbook ProOS X Mavericks 10.9.22.5 GHz Intel Core i54GB of RAM (never changed it from when I bought it)240GB SSD Crucial M500Intel HD Graphics 4000 So whenever I awake my macbook from sleep, it makes the same noise as when I boot it up or restart the machine. Is this something I should be worried about? I thought that SSDs isn't mechanical as a traditional HDD so I reckon the sound must be something else but I cannot pinpoint what it is.

Sep 10, 2009I have a G5 that is about 5 years old. For some reason it will not sleep or shutdown. When I try to do either one of those actions it does simi-sleep/shut down, but not completely. By that I mean it sounds like the hard drive spins down but then fans still are running. After about two minutes the fans spin way up and the Mac won't start back up. I have to pull the power on my battery backup. I took it to the shop (Not an apple store) and they reinstalled the OS for me and put some new ram in. Supposedly they "Fixed' the problem.

Mar 31, 2012I've bought a brand new MPB 15'' about 2 days ago.
Every time I put it in sleep mode (by closing lid, or manually choose Sleep from menu) it goes to sleep (I check it by front indicator), but FANS STARTING TO ROTATE AT MAX SPEED (Sorry for CAPS)
I've already reseted the PRAM, reseted the SMC. Turn off any sharing. But that did not help.

Jul 5, 2012i purchased my new macbook air about two weeks ago and last night, i put my computer to sleep and noticed that the fans remained on. since then, ive reset the pram and the smc but it still keeps the fans on. i'm not sure if it should do this and i just didn't notice or if it's actually supposed to do that.

Mac Pro :: System Fans Running At High Speed / When Wake From Sleep
Feb 8, 2007I have a MacPro 2.66 quad-core intel. 4gb ram. I have a hard-drive from my old Powermac that i upgraded to 10.5.5 for this computer. Everytime I put my computer to sleep, and then wake it back up. The fans spin up to maximum speed and all the fans are running really loud and then after about a minute all spin to normal speed.
I don't have any other flaws except for this. Why could this be?

Nov 5, 2009I have a 24" mid-2009 iMac, bought in June. It's behaving oddly over the past week or so. It fails to wake on sleep on the first attempt, but always succeeds on the second. When I say fails though, I mean that it *does* wake up, but goes back to sleep again after a few seconds. The other issue happened today, when I woke it up, in a cold room, the fans started up at full speed (I assume). It sounded terrifying to me as my iMac has never got that loud - not even playing games. I restarted it and it was the same, but died down after a while.

Oct 9, 2005I just bought a new dual 2.0 ghz power mac G5 about 2 weeks ago. I set everything up and dowloaded all the updates for everything, and then about a week into using it the problem started. I left for work and when I got home that evening after the computer had been asleep all day, it sounded like the computer was taking off from a runway. It would not respond at all to the keyboard or mouse so I had to shut it down by holding the power button on the front of the unit and then start it back up. I called tech support but they had me turn the option off that puts the harddrive to sleep when possible and then turn off my screensaver. Well it was fine again for about a week and then it happened agin yesterday, not once but twice. I looked on apple discussion boards and there is alot of this happening. Well I took one guy's advice that seemed to know what he was talking about. I restarted holding the command-option-o-f keys down, then prompted the computer to reset the v-ram, and two other things he suggested to reset that I cannot remember. Then I restarted, trashed the energy saver prefs and ran a repair disk permissions task inside OSX. Well that is where I am now, and it has not done it again, but I am still trying to find out what exactly is going on here. I just spent $2000 on a machine and it appears messed up and Mac has no answer.

Jan 16, 2007When upgrading my G5 I simply backed up the old drive to the neww 500 gig drive in bay 2 and then switched them. Could I just switch it to a Quad and the voila! it works? Could it be that simple or will I need to reinstall all the software?
What about installing the drive into a Macpro? Could I just place it in a bay and then run all my programs, like Photoshop, Imageprint, and Office?
PowerPC :: Using Quad G5 Mulitple?
Apr 17, 2009I just purchased a Quad G5, from the original owner. Original owner, stated, that the machine was in excellent condition, and had not had any problems, nor parts replaced under Apple Care Warranty. Twice today, I had programs crash. 1st crash involved Photoshop CS3 Ext. 2nd Crash, involved FireFox & Photo Mechanic, which then I received a message from within OS X, to restart my tower.
I am quite surprised about the crashes, and do not know what to do, nor expect. Before, I received the G5, the HDD was wiped, with a fresh install of 10.5.6...
I'm also having a Bus Power issue. Before the G5, I had an aluminum keyboard, plugged into my iMac C2D, and I had no problem with Bus power, driving either my Thumb Drive or HDD, but with the Keyboard, hooked to the G5, I'm getting insufficient power warnings
Also, my 23" ACD will not go to sleep. I've got the screen saver set to 3 mins, which does come up, and the time set to 10 mins, for the display to go to sleep. However, when it hits the 10 min threshold, the screen blinks off for a second, then reverts to the active desktop, and the cycle begins again.
Also, with the 23" ACD, I'm seeing, what appears to be a ghosting effect, when I have apps layered on top of each other. It has been occurring with various apps, such as having Photo Mechanic on bottom, then Firefox on top, then Photoshop on top of it.
PowerPC :: Air-cooled My G5 Quad?
Jul 22, 2010Well I'm kinda basically overhauling my G5 LCS so I figured, why not lets try and put a heatsink from my 1.8ghz G5 onto the quad G5 CPU since I have it out. I only have one CPU in it right now and it's actually doing pretty damn good. I set the Energy prefs to Reduced as a precaution.
If I ditch the LCS and make this a permanent setup, I will have to machine some custom brackets to hold the heatsinks to the logicboard/case. I have the G5 laid on it's side at the moment since there is no way to fasten the 1.8ghz heatsink down.

This is with a constant 50% load on the CPUs as I just have it folding right now.
PowerPC :: Graphics Distorted On G5 Quad?
Nov 23, 2010Well I was swapping some processors around on my G5 when I noticed that I was getting some weird graphical glitches. They went away when I disabled the 3-4 CPUs and made it a dual-core. The glitches are replicable when sizing windows and consistent when different window sizes. I'm starting to wonder if one of my CPUs are faulty...? Everything seems to be running fine otherwise. I attached a pic of the graphic anomaly I'm getting with all 4 core active and it only appears around text and it's always red color.
On a side note I also noticed that 2 of my dimm slots are reporting errors, the two outer banks. I've removed them and it's fine. Gonna load up the diagnostic discs to see if it finds anything.
PowerPC :: Quad G5 CPU Part Number?
Nov 29, 2010I have had this quad g5 (dualcore 2.5ghz X 2) laying around for about a year that I purchased for $100 without a hard drive, super drive or a power cord. I was told that it was non working in the manner that ONE of the dual core cpu's had gone bad. I will be receiving my power cord this week to make sure that it still powers on but what the problem is.
My question is: If only one of the cpu's are bad, what is the part number I will be looking at? I am not wanting to spend a fortune on this to fix it, but If I do get it working I would like to drop 8-16gb ram in it, and setup a raid with 2 raptors.

Jun 11, 2007My PM G5 Quad is in need of a new logic board and processor. I am waiting until after WWDC to see if there will be an update to the Mac Pro line - as I will be buying a new one to replace my old one. What's useful to keep from my old G5? I feel like I'm parting out an old Camaro or something. I'm planning to at minimum keep the HD and just pop it into the new machine (hope I can do that). I'm fairly certain the RAM is not going to be compatible, but I'm wondering if there's anything else I can scavenge off the old machine.

PowerPC :: Quad Processor Using GeForce 6600?
Oct 8, 2008I am using a G5 Quad processor with a GeForce 6600 graphics card. I am working on a project in Second Life [URL] and have been advised that I need to update the driver on my graphics card to solve some problems encountered in Second Life. There does not seem to be an update for this card for Macs. I have asked Apple for help, but they have told me my serial number does not exist even though it is registered and I have had technical help from them in the past. Second Life say they do not support this graphics card!

I know that an Intel Core 2 Duo is faster than a G5, but how is it faster than the Quad? What exactly makes the Intel faster than the G5? I am looking at the Apple specs of the Quad and to me, it looks like a really solid computer, especially for 2005.

PowerPC :: G5 Quad 7800GT Fan Loud And Fast
Jul 13, 2010Is there anyway to fix this other than buying a new graphics card? I've searched but couldn't find a solution. The 7800GT in my G5 always spins at top speed and is so much louder than the whole system. I've had it disconnected for a while but I don't want it burning up . Thinking I just might wire it to the 5v side of the molex connector on the optical drive?

There is no error, it's not the mail, it even does it when I have my external speakers turned off. Anyone else have this going on? Sep 2, 2009I need a new/best card for a G5 quad 2.5. I know it's old (4 years) but it's still used quite a bit - mainly for Photoshop work. The card needs to run 2 x 23" Cinema Displays. I'm not sure if it makes any difference but it has 16GB memory (twice as much as our new 2.93 Quad can take - there's something not quite right there...)

Jan 4, 2011My PowerMac G5 fans hardly ever speed up. I mean they certainly never go full speed or ever close how they sometimes behave on start up. I never get the jet speed noise. Even when I am rendering a movie in FCP, I hardly hear the fans. Right now on idle, iStat pro reports CPU A being 58C and CPU B being 56C. Yet, the fans are still only 400RPM both CPUS Intake/Outake.

Sep 30, 2006I'm trying to record something through the internal mic (and I'm too cheap to go out and buy a proper mic) and I was wondering if there is anyway through Terminal,or an external program, to force the fans to shut off for a certain period of time? I don't want to turn them off to find they can't turn back on and suddenly the computer is 1000�...I just want to keep them off to have a minimal amount of background noise. Oct 26, 2006I have a strange problem with the powermac G5 1.8 SP, yes the one with the hardware bug. It was my first mac, what a dissapointment. The bug was partly solved with the firmware upgrade, but after that it still behaved strangely. The fans suddenly go up to maximum speed every hour, then quikcly return to normal. There still have been lockup's / beachballing with USB, and overall slow performance.Now I am running the latest mac osx Tiger version, about a few weeks ago, the fans start revving up almost to maximum, all the time, regardless of cpu load. The cpu temperature reads about 60...65 degrees centigrade when idling (minimum cpu load), cpu setting is already on "reduced speed". After switching-on, cpu temperature is already 60 degrees centigrade. The cpu heatsink is stonecold, as is the exhaust airflow. The cpu 2 fans roar like mad and keep revving up and down. When I remove the plastic transparent cover, the photocell is activated and a red LED comes on, now the fans immediately return to normal speed. Anybody else had similar problems wit the powermac G5 SP 1.8Ghz ?

It's not even when I put a heavy load on it.I usually just hold the power button down and do a hard shut down. Does anyone know why this G5 keeps doing this? Should I re-seat the ram and GPU?

Jan 19, 2009My PowerMac's (G5 Dual 1.8GHz procs) fans seem to run at a solid 4k rpm's regardless of what I'm doing, even with CPU usage set to low. I've taken the whole machine apart, cleaning it with canned air and such, but the problem just won't leave me be. The air coming out of the machine is ice cold, and the temperature readings I'm getting are about 86 degrees F for the CPU's and 70 for the HDD, so I'm not sure what gives.. Slot and Backside fans are running at 255 rpm, but the others are all 4k.
