Until yesterday, my iMac G3 slot is working fine, but today, I can't power it up. When I press the power button, the light just flash and then went off. I've opened it up to check the PRAM batt and also checked if there are any shorts on the logic board. All looked ok to me. The HDD is working fine and I supposed the power supply unit is fine too.
View 2 RepliesI have a charcoal iMac DV SE 500 which won't complete a proper start. The machine chimes and begins to start, and then clicks off again before anything can show on the screen. It won't start in Target Disk mode, and zapping the PRAM (starting with alt/apple/P/R, right?) has no effect. Does this sound like a dead PRAM battery, a dead 'Power/Analog' board, or a dead hard drive? Can anyone give me an idea of how much it would cost to fix, and recommend good, reliable, cheap UK repairers It's not worth much, but I have a friend who'd love it if it can be restored to life, and I'd like to get some of the files off it if it's not the drive.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 12" PB and latelly became a nightmare with the stuck CDs. Usually it does not want to eject CDs/DVDs from companies but it handles fine virging cds/dvds. ?? Probably there is some formating in the industrial kind of CDs outside, who knows.just want to open this thread for people with the same problem.If the drive tries to eject but can't and end up mounting the CD again. Just take another CD and when you press eject again push that CD into the slot but just one third and you will see the stuck CD coming out with no problem as well.It seems there is a sensor or something that obviously does not work well. I inserted a virgin CD and the drive worked just fine and ejected later on, but a CD as the installer for my Linksys get stuck and some other softwares too.

I know fastmac sell a Bluray drive for $999, but that has the unnecessary write capability which jacks up the price. So, does anyone know where to get a slot loading BD-ROM for the iMac?
View 11 Replies View RelatedThe screen/crt of the imac that I have been using since about '98 went black - this actually happened a couple times previously but I was able to get back in (no idea - one of those things where out of frustration you just start pushing everything at once and it suddenly pops back on). I have tried everything - the internal battery, that little button on the motherboard (not sure if that is what it is called) that resets everything, the connection of the main power button on the front, etc. I am fairly sure it is stuck in sleep-mode or something (no beeps, hard drive doesn't make the usual booting-up sounds but you can tell that it is receiving power) but after months of wasted effort I finally gave up. I bought another slot-loading G3 and would like to swap hard-drives between the two - I have taken my old G3 completely apart so many times that I am totally comfortable with that aspect but have hesitated because if I somehow blow this one I will be left with nothing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI bought an iMac G3 at an auction, it is the Indigo version with 400MHz G3 processor, 10GB HD, hope that's enough to work out which one. It will simply not boot up at all, when I first got it I switched it on and it done the Apple chime sound, then nothing, no power light at all. Now if I press the power button, no power light, no screen, nothing, although the screen sounds like it is coming on (the static sound and the degauss coil), no more chime or anything, as well as the CD drive sounds liek its searching for a disc, and the hard drive clicks a couple of times. I do not have an Apple keyboard or mouse, and am using a standard wireless USB keyboard and an optical wheel USB mouse. I don't know if it just needs OS9 on it (it says that on the sticker on the bottom) and if that is the only problem. I pressed the PMU reset button in the RAM flap while it was not connected to any power, and this hasn't done anything.
View 10 Replies View Relatedi can't connect to the internet via my ethernet cable, but this is a weird case. What's weird about it is that all my settings are O.K. (appletalk on and set to ethernet, tcp/ip set to ethernet, dhcp) and my iMac is recieving a 192 address, but it still can't connect to the internet. The dhcp settings are correct, because they are the same settings used on all my other devices (at least those that use internet anyway), and they all connect to the internet just fine. Whether via an ethernet cable, or Wi-Fi.

When I plug it in, the computer makes a horrrible noise, and then when I press the power button, it flashes, and the noise becomes much louder. It origionally turned on to the hd selection screen when I first got it, and I accidentally left it on all day. When I got home, it was making the noise. I know it is not the hard drive, because it dieson't have one, and Imacs don't have fans.

so i go to turn my imac on tonight and it makes the normal noise when it always turns on but the screen stays blank(light blue)....after about 2 minutes this little picture of a folder with a question mark shows up in the middle of the screen. it keeps making this clicking noise as well. ive tried unplugging everything and restarting it here is a pic of what the thing that pop ups looks like [URL]

I'm currently running OS X 10.3 and find that I can not read any of my DVD+R discs but I can read my CDRs just fine. My guess is that the optical drive is simply too old to recognize the DVD+R format. Is this correct?
My alternative to this would be to purchase a firewire external drive enclosure and put one of my newer dvd burners in it, but would I be able to boot from this type of connection or do I have to actually buy a "superdrive"?
What is the size of the drive is it 9.5mm or 12.7mm?
And will this work?

I just restored an old 1999 G3 iMac DV 400MHZ with slot-drive from the dead, and I feel it lacks a bit of power under it's hood. I already put RAM and HDD but the computing power is just not enough. What I want to do is go into OpenFirmware and speed up the cpu and possibly the bus, I remember doing so on my sawtooth but I can't find the code plus that was a G4 and now I have a G3. I also found this page [URL] that shows how to mechanicaly overclock up to 1GHZ but I want to be able to do it non physical if possible. I know this isn't the hot topic now a days but maybe some of you will remember what they used to do and feel some nostalgia(is that a propper word?).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI bought a second hand iMac G3 off eBay for a pretty good deal, and am trying to figure out where the buzzing is coming from.
It doesn't come with any CDs so I don't think I can do a hard wear test, but I've noticed it is happening even when the display is off, and is in sleep (although it gets less audible in sleep).
Another thing I noticed is that in OS X it will stop after a while of not using it, despite the screen being on and still showing the image, is this the hard drive stopping? When I go and touch a key or move the mouse it starts again.
I have currently acquired a few old Macs. I have got an iMac G3 SE with a slot loading drive. The computer is fine all barr the slot load drive - it has died. I have also got a PPC Mac Mini with a suggested logic board failure.
Does anybody think there is a chance i could replace the broken slot load drive in the iMac with the working one from the mac mini? i don't want to start opening the iMac up if someone already knows theres no chance it would work.
I am new to mac. When I insert a cd/dvd into the slot loading drive, I have to push the cd in rather far before it actually catches it and pulls it in. Is this normal or is it supposed to only be pushed in about half way. When it ejects it seems that it pushes the disc out much further. Is there something you must do before inserting a cd, or do you just push it in?

The prices for laptop BD drives in general are lower than I expected but any slot-loaders available are about 12mm high, which means 17" MBP owners are in luck. [URL] It's strange that this one is available though, yet encouraging. If they can build a 9mm drive that uses a tray then surely a slot format would be easier?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy friend was thinking of getting a new iMac, the only thing he does not like about them is the slot loading drive. He burns around 5 cd's/DVD's a day, a stack of 100 cd's does not last long with him. He does a lot of movie burning to watch it on his tv and wonders if after a year of tons of burning will the slot loading drive die out. He does not want to buy an external DVD burner as well which is what i use.

I turned it off, and tried to turn it back on. But when it comes on, I just hear the fan. The apple logo does not light up. I'm not sure what's wrong.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've inherited an iBook G4 12". Model A1133. It came with a partially charged battery and a known power issue. Initially with the battery partially charged (on another iBook), the machine turned on ok. The battery was not charging, according to the About this Mac and the Coconut Battery application, although the light on the AC adaptor was amber. As the battery became flat, the iBook was no longer able to be turned on. I have reset PMU, PRAM, Opened the Firmware and reset the NVRAM, reseated the battery and tried a host of things suggested on this forum and others to no avail. I have also replaced the DC-in board (no difference, so put the old one back in) and tried a different power adaptor. The battery is as flat as a tack (now occasionally flashing one light when button is pressed) and now there is no chime, fan noise except for an occasional sound which sounds like the hard drive starting then stopping (very faint sound though) when I try to power up the iBook. I was hoping to get an external battery charger to charge the battery as I don't have a spare charged one nor access to a similar working iBook. I live in Australia and have been unable to find one online here. The other thing I have heard on two forums, is that this iBook doesn't have a PRAM battery and therefore cannot start without a powered battery in place. If this is the case, then the issue may be that of just the power not being delivered to the PMU?

Recently it will literally come on for a few minutes and go off again. I then have to wait some time (and i usually n plug it and re plug it in) before it works again. I wonder whether something has been dislodged perhaps. Im poised to go and buy a new hard drive but if you think its something more serious then i wont bother.
