Intel Mac :: 2011 14 Months Old Won't Startup - Keeps Powering Off?

Jun 19, 2012

A few weeks ago I had problems with my iMac freezing and also had a few Kernal panics.  I ended up doing a disk utility with the actual startup disk and since then it worked for about 10 days but just recently froze again (while in Firefox) and started making a continuous loud beeping from the speakers  and kind of a staticy sound...so I turned it off but now it won't stay started.  I hear the "bong" noise and then see the apple logo and the bar under apple logo starts to come on but disappears And then it powers down to black screen and off. I have tried putting disk in but it spits it out at startup I have also tried Resetting pram and smc...I hope I did that correctly I believe I did? What other steps can I take?

IMac :: 20 Inch Keeps Powering Off?

Nov 17, 2010

i need to know whether its a hard drive issue for not. My mac started to switch itself off completely with no warning. Recently it will literally come on for a few minutes and go off again. I then have to wait some time (and i usually n plug it and re plug it in) before it works again. I wonder whether something has been dislodged perhaps. Im poised to go and buy a new hard drive but if you think its something more serious then i wont bother.

PowerPC :: IMac G3 Not Powering Up

Jul 1, 2008

I bought an iMac G3 at an auction, it is the Indigo version with 400MHz G3 processor, 10GB HD, hope that's enough to work out which one. It will simply not boot up at all, when I first got it I switched it on and it done the Apple chime sound, then nothing, no power light at all. Now if I press the power button, no power light, no screen, nothing, although the screen sounds like it is coming on (the static sound and the degauss coil), no more chime or anything, as well as the CD drive sounds liek its searching for a disc, and the hard drive clicks a couple of times. I do not have an Apple keyboard or mouse, and am using a standard wireless USB keyboard and an optical wheel USB mouse. I don't know if it just needs OS9 on it (it says that on the sticker on the bottom) and if that is the only problem. I pressed the PMU reset button in the RAM flap while it was not connected to any power, and this hasn't done anything.

OS X :: Powering Down Time Increased?

Jan 30, 2009

Normally when I shut power off my MacBook Pro, it takes about 4-5 seconds and then its off. Since I installed VMware Fusion yesterday, it takes about 1 minute to power off. What is going on? I read somewhere that when you quit a virtual machine you need to choose "kill all" to stop any background processes. How do I do this or is this just normal.

MacBook :: Pro Randomly Powering Off / What To Fix It?

Feb 24, 2010

I'm hoping for some kind of insight on a phantom random shut off issue I'm having. I have a 2007 2.2ghz MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and upgraded to 4GB ram. Within the last month, it has started to randomly power off. At first it only happened when I closed the lid and it went into sleep, but when I would arrive at school it would have shutdown on the trip. In the middle of this, I also replaced the battery. The day I put the new battery in, the thing freaked out. It powered off randomly while I was working. I was in the middle of the first battery calibration so I thought it might be a battery issue. When I tried to power back on, it would start to load the desktop and then power off again. I couldn't get it through a full boot cycle. I tried various configs of old battery, new battery, with power, without power cord and nothing seemed to work. Reset the SMC and PRAM as well to no avail. The longer I let it sit the longer I could work prior to power failure. So I assumed it was FUBAR and walked away.

Next morning called apple care and of course, things seemed fine. However, 1.5hours in, shuts off. Crap, Apple Care said go to Genius bar get it checked. Three days at Genius bar, full hardware and stress test and everything passed flying colors. I thought maybe it was a naughty little gnome who had decided to move on and torment some other guy. 3 days go by no problem, then today during sleep it powered off again. Then tonight, twice while working with powercord attached (one time losing about an hours worth of Excel work, which was a nice bonus).

Since everything checked out fine, I'm struggling with what to tell Apple if I take it back for repair. I need the laptop, but trying to work expecting impending doom when it randomly decides to shutdown sucks. I have apple care, but if they can't find any issues then it doesn't do me any good.
Any suggestions? Is it worth trying to do a clean install or look at some kind of software issue? Has anyone else dealt with this kind of issue?

MacBook Pro :: Can't Use LED Cinema Without Powering

Mar 7, 2010

I just got a MacBook Pro and an LED cinema display 24'' and I find myself using it 90% with the cinema display in clamshell mode. I am worried because the power adapter of the cinema display is charging the battery 24/7 when it is charged and i am afraid it might damage it. I can't use the LED cinema display without powering the macbook pro.

Software :: New MacBook Pro Not Powering Up

I just bought this new 15" MacBook Pro (early 2009). Yesterday I plug in the power adapter and open the lid. Nothing. I hold down the power button for a few seconds. Nothing. After going on line I found a link to reset the SMC. So I followed the instructions and that worked - yesterday. This morning same scenario sans I can not get it to power up.

OS X :: External Hard Drive Not Powering Up

Jan 5, 2011

I'm running 10.6.5 on a 2.4ghz Macbook Pro, but I don't think this info is necessarily relevant because my problem is with an external drive. I left the country for four months, and on my return, my hard drive (which had been sitting on a shelf in untouched for months) would not power up. It is a WD MyBook 750 gb. Since the problem was in the power, I assumed that the enclosure, not the drive, was faulty. I ordered a hard drive dock so I could test it out, and it finally arrived today. The dock powers on when the drive is not in the slot, but when the drive is inserted (before power on) the power light does not turn on. Is anyone with some hard drive knowledge able to point me in the right direction? What could the problem be? Is it fixable? Is my information recoverable?

MacBook Pro :: Screen Was White After Powering On?

Sep 22, 2009

I bought a MacBook Pro Unibody a month ago. I had the stock 250GB HDD inside of it. I replaced it with a 320GB WD HDD. The screen was white after powering on, and wouldn't get past that stage. I put it inside an external enclosure and strangely it booted up and allowed me to install Snow Leopard. I took it to the shop and they said the hard drive was faulty ?!? so I'm looking at it now and it's working cause i'm writing this post now.

The question I have is in regards to returning to the store tomorrow. Should I leave the inside of the Mac hard drive less and carry the hard drive with me in the enclosure tomorrow? Or should I leave the hard drive inside the computer and then have them open it up and diagnose the drive? I am looking for the quickest way possible. I wasn't sure how apple would look if I brought the computer in without the drive... I just want to show them how crap of a job they did and show them the drive works fine.

MacBook Pro :: (2011) Stopped Powering On?

May 2, 2012

Yesterday morning it took longer than usual to shutdown. I didn't think much of it at the time. After shutting down I put it in my laptop bag, drove to a friends house. When I arrived there it would not turn on. The power cord wasn't displaying any sign of life either. I followed some instructions to reset the SMC via the (left) shift + ctrl + option keys along with the power button. It still wouldn't power on. I took it to the Apple store. The Genius said he'd be back in 5 minutes, he took it to the back room. After 20 minutes he came back and said he had no idea what was wrong with it. He asked if my data was backed up, which it was and then went on to inform me that it would need to be shipped to another facility to troubleshoot it. He warned me that water damage would void my warranty, which shouldn't be an issue considering I've never spilled anything on it. He inspected it in front of me and commented how it still looked brand new.

MacBook Pro :: Not Powering Up At All - Totally Dead

I plugged in a mobile battery power station to charge today, [URL] and my Macbook pro 13 suddenly died. It will not turn on via the power button, there's no lights on the battery indicator on the side of the Macbook and nothing at all on the power adapter. I've checked the fuse in the plug and that's ok. Are there any internal fuses that could have blown in both the macbook and the power supply. I charged it before with no problems. Been through lots of these solution pages, but I'm totally stuck

PowerPC :: IBook G4 12" A1133 Not Powering Up / Not Getting To PMU?

Jan 5, 2010

I've inherited an iBook G4 12". Model A1133. It came with a partially charged battery and a known power issue. Initially with the battery partially charged (on another iBook), the machine turned on ok. The battery was not charging, according to the About this Mac and the Coconut Battery application, although the light on the AC adaptor was amber. As the battery became flat, the iBook was no longer able to be turned on. I have reset PMU, PRAM, Opened the Firmware and reset the NVRAM, reseated the battery and tried a host of things suggested on this forum and others to no avail. I have also replaced the DC-in board (no difference, so put the old one back in) and tried a different power adaptor. The battery is as flat as a tack (now occasionally flashing one light when button is pressed) and now there is no chime, fan noise except for an occasional sound which sounds like the hard drive starting then stopping (very faint sound though) when I try to power up the iBook. I was hoping to get an external battery charger to charge the battery as I don't have a spare charged one nor access to a similar working iBook. I live in Australia and have been unable to find one online here. The other thing I have heard on two forums, is that this iBook doesn't have a PRAM battery and therefore cannot start without a powered battery in place. If this is the case, then the issue may be that of just the power not being delivered to the PMU?

MacBook Pro :: Late 2011 Powering On Automatically?

May 29, 2012

In january 2012 i received MacBook Pro as gift from my brother. MacBook works fine, untill yesterday, when turned off automatically. When i tried to turn it on again, nothing happened. I tried with resetting SMC, PRAM, NVRAM, but that doesn't help at all.

I thought it was battery, so i opened it, disconnected battery, and when i plugged in MagSafe, MBP automatically switched on. When i shutdown MBP via shutdown button inside OSX, everything went fine, but when i pushed Power On button on MBP, it won't turn on again. So, i tried to replug again MagSafe, and MBP powered on again automatically. When i plugged back battery again, it won't power on, even with MagSafe "trick".

I live in Serbia, and in my country, there is no AppleStore :/ To make it worse, since my brother moved to another city, he lost warranty, so we don't have it What should i do? MBP is old only 6 months

IMac :: Adaptive Push Button For Powering On Computer

Jul 8, 2009

I recently purchased a Mac mini As you all know, the Mac mini has its power on button in the rear of the computer. Due to a stroke I am in a wheelchair and my right side is paralyzed. This means that I have to have my mother or brother turn on the Mac mini for me. Does anyone know of a push button type of device that I can use to power on, and off, my Mac mini? While "push button" would be nice, the powering on device can be a switch. I fully realize that I can leave the Mac mini running 24/7 which I do very often. However, during thunder storms I like to shut the Mac mini off entirely. I do not want to take any chances. I know of a few people (including me with my old Power Mac) who left their computers on during a thunder storm and their computers got zapped.

MacBook Pro :: Froze And After Powering Down And Restarting It Has Been Extremely Slow

Jun 1, 2014

Friday afternoon my Mac froze and after powering down and restarting, it has been extremely slow. Before now it was running perfectly.  Now, it takes about 20 minutes to start up and then about another 20 minutes to load the dock and another 20 minutes to open an app, etc. It's impossible to use. I get the loading wheel between every word I type.

After running in safe mode/repairing hard drive/etc. nothing had changed. So I just decided to backup all of my stuff and try to restore it to factory settings. I erased the hardrive and set up my computer again. It's still running the same way though. Extremely slow, impossible to use. I'm running on Mavericks 10.9.3. Is there anything I could do or could this be something like a failing hard drive?

I bought my mac about 8 months ago. I already made an appointment at the genius bar for tomorrow night but I would really really rather not have to go.

Mac Pro :: MacPro Died - When Powering Machine Hear Startup Sound And Display Shows Apple Logo

Nov 28, 2010

My early 2008 2.8GHz 8-core Mac Pro died last week. I tried all the usual stuff and ended up taking it to the local Apple store genius bar. They ran their diagnostics tool on it and did not find any problems so I had to leave it for a more thorough test. The Apple Store called a few days later and said it was either the main logic board and/or one or both CPU's. They -say- they replaced the main logic board and that did not fix it. They told me it would be ~$2800 USD plus labor to replace the the main logic board and both CPU's. So I took the machine over to another authorized Apple Service center for a second opinion. This other service center seemed confident they could determine which component(s) are defective. I am expecting a call from them on Tuesday of this week and hope to find out more then.

The symptoms are: When powering the machine I hear the startup sound and the display shows the apple logo. The machine boots for a little while (disk activity is heard) then the machine freezes for about 30 seconds then reboots or just freezes indefinitely. This happens with my 10.6.5 boot system, a second 10.6.x boot system on another internal drive as well as from the 10.6 SL DVD installer disc. Apple could not boot it off their network based systems either. Same symptoms on all startup disks tried so far...

So, I'd like to know where to go if I need to obtain parts and do the repair myself. I've built a number of PC's in the past and have no concerns about the undertaking. I just need to determine which parts I need. I'm not looking to "upgrade" the machine however if faster CPU's are available for a similar price I'd probably opt for the upgrade. At this point I'd be completely satisfied replacing the defective components with the same stuff that's in the machine now. Any pointers/links/tips/etc. would be most appreciated.
