PowerPC :: Large Drive Support And Clamshells

Jul 9, 2010

So, I know that Clamshells do not have large drive support built in, but my question is of another nature. I can get a brand new OEM 160Gb Western Digital drive for about the same price, maybe less, than what I'd pay for an 80Gb through OWC. Naturally, I'd like one, but I wanted to know if there are any caveats to using a larger drive than is supported. I know I can only format and use the first 128Gb, but does the drive being bigger pose problems, with lost data for instance? I need the drive to be reliable as it will be used for school.

PowerPC :: Powerbook G4 Large Dark Spot On Screen / How To Fix It

Feb 8, 2007

Let me first apologize for this being very similar to one other topic in this section. However this is exactly what is happening to my computer and no one has answered the other guys thread ( similar to my post - agentphish - posted 01-19-2007, 08:19 AM).

I have searched through 50 of 77pages in this particular forum and my eyes are bugging out. Could someone please give me advice on this matter.

First, about 1 month or so ago I started noticing that in the bottom left and right corners of my screen, about the size of a nickel, it is a lighter color than that of the rest of the screen. It is hard to notice, but I do.

Now, I have recently begun to experience a large round dark area, just slightly smaller than the diameter of a CD in the lower left hand side of my 2 year old powerbook.
It only manifests itself when the computer has either been asleep or turned off for a period of time (typically the longest for me is a few hours during the day that it may be off or at most a period of overnight while I am sleeping)

It seems as though after 5-10 minutes it goes away presumably as the pixels are "warming up" or whatever it is that pixels do.

PowerPC :: White Screen With The Apple Logo And Spinning Circle / Large Fan Not Working

Dec 13, 2009

I just acquired a G4 MDD Power Mac. Dual 1 Ghz processors.I pulled the HD out of my older g4, connected it, and powered the machine up. The HD has OSX 10.5 and works fine in the older G4.

The first thing I notice is that the Small fan (in the door) is spinning, but the Large fan under the Power Supply is NOT. The red light on the Motherboard is on.

What happens is that all I get is a white screen, with the Apple Logo, and the spinning circle. it never acceses the hard drive and boots into 10.5 What does this point to? I hope the Dual processors are not the problem here. But that large fan not spinning worries me.

OS X :: Moving Large Files One Hard Drive To Another

Dec 20, 2008

I am moving a few folders which are in excess of 4 gig each from one hard drive to another to try and free up space, of course I am aware that one is formatted for mac and the other is ms dos but I already have stuff on it and can't take it off in order to reformat it (or I do not want to). Is there a program that exist that will allow me to do this, I was only thinking in regard to programs such as Senuti for backing up an iPod. Since an iPod is so huge, you tell the program where to put the songs and regardless of the space it will do it, no questions asked. If you understand what I am on about can you please assist me in any other way in regard to solving me problem.

OS X :: USB Drive Format - Windows And Mac For Large Files (4GB+)?

Nov 22, 2009

I have an 8GB Toshiba TransMemory? U2M USB Flash Drive and I want it to work with both Windows and Mac. I know this can be accomplished by formatting FAT32, but I need to be able to load 5GB files. This of course eliminates FAT as an option. I know there is a format that works for this, because I used to do these transfers with this very drive (with the manufacturer's format). Up until I had to temporarily reformat the drive for a little project. Now I need to get this USB drive back to a format that works for me.

OS X :: Copying Large Files To Network Drive

Nov 22, 2009

I've recently purchased a NAS drive and would now like to copy about 500 GB of files onto it. Obviously this is a slow process! Is there a way I can set up the copy so that if it gets interrupted I can resume the transfer? At the moment the I just know X of 100 GB has been transferred. On the destination drive you can't see any of the files being transferred across until the entire operation is complete (on a pc you can normally see the files that have been transferred immediately) ... I'm a bit worried that if I turn my laptop off or I have any network issues the transfer will fail..

OS X :: Official Snow Leopard Not Support PowerPC Macs

Jun 11, 2008

Documentation included with copies of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard distributed during Apple's developer conference this week confirm that the next-generation operating system does not presently support Macs with PowerPC processors. LogicielMac.com has published a screen capture of the PDF-based requirements document included on the Snow Leopard disc that provides a rundown of the system's requirements.

The documentation states that in order to install Snow Leopard, developers must have a Mac computer with "an Intel processor" and at least 512MB of RAM, though additional memory is recommended for development purposes. The findings confirm an AppleInsider report from last September, which cited people familiar with the ongoing development of Leopard as saying that Mac OS X 10.6 would in all likelihood exclude support for PowerPC processors. According to the Snow Leopard documentation, the new system will also require an Apple-supplied video card, 9GB of hard disk space, and either an internal, external or shared DVD drive. OS X :: Transferring Large Files From Macbook Pro To External Hard Drive

Nov 8, 2009

I am trying to transfer a large file (~7GB) from my macbook pro to my external drive... but seems that I keep getting an error. If I try to drag and drop from my Mac drive to the folder of my external hard drive I keep getting this message: 'The operation can?t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0).' I tried to use a UNIX command with the Terminal $mv file.xxx /Volumes/HardDrive/ at first it seemed to work, but after a while I receive this message from the Terminal: 'File too large' I am now frustrated... I need to save this large file for backup purposes and my external hard drive is not big enough to be used for Time Machine (it has 80GB out of 160 of space left)

PowerPC :: Mac G5 2.3Ghz Dual-Core/HiDef (Hulu) Video Support?

Sep 17, 2008

I have a Power Mac G5 2.3Ghz dual-core system (M9591LL/A) with 2.5GBs of RAM and an Nvidia 6600 PCIe graphics card with 256MBs of RAM.

I tried playing a full-screen HD episode of "The Office" on Hulu.com and it was extremely choppy (like 0.5fps). The sound was fine. It's still quite choppy (~2fps) in a normal browser window (not full-screen)

Is this normal? Does this video card not support it? What is the most powerful card that can be installed in this machine? I'm not opposed to buying a PC card and flashing the ROM if need-be.

Intel Mac :: External USB Hard Drive Disconnects During Large File Transfers

May 9, 2012

I have a Western Digital 2TB USB Hard Drive that Ive been using perfectly for a couple of years on my MacBook Pro. A couple of months ago I bought a 27inch iMac and started using it as my main computer. So I had that hard drive connected to my iMac.

I started to notice that during large transfers (be it many files or 1 big one), usually into the Gigs, I suddenly got a warning message saying that the Hard Drive was inappropriately disconnected. It doesnt appear in Disk Utility so I have to manually connect and disconnect the drive in order for it to show up again on the iMac. I tested it again on my MacBook and the same thing happened.

Another problem:

Sometimes it will dissappear from the iMac without a warning message, it just doesnt show up. (Usually after long periods of inactivity). I then have to manually disconnect and connect for it to show up.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Disk Drive May Not Support Time Machine Backup Over Network

Mar 28, 2012

Is time machine already/still supported on current OSX 10.7, or is it already deprecated as it was introduced several releases ago? When I try to activate Time Machine on my all new OS X Server, I get a dialog "Choose destination volume for client Time Machine backups:". I choose a volume, and the message is displayed "This disk drive may not support Time Machine backup over the network. Get more information about compatible drives."

"More information" links to [URL] which just provides commonplace advice to not disconnect drives while the drive is in operation. The support article is marked as archived and no longer updated after 10.5. The promised information is not provided. Is there anything obviously wrong with the setup?

Mac Mini Server, OS X Lion 10.7.3, 2x750 internal disks as RAID1, new of this month
External drive: 3TB USB3 Maxtor, single partition (repartitioned for GUID), connected via one of the internal USB2

The external drive is also used as Time Machine for the Server's local volume. I have read recommendations to use separate partitions per client, for time machine solutions using a third party NAS. Instead I chose the original - am I wrong to assume that the OS X Server's Time Machine service is able to manage multiple clients?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: No Support For AFP Features Error After Partitioning Network Backup Drive

May 26, 2012

I recently added a G-Speed Q RAID array to my MAC PRO to use exclusively for back-up with Time Machine. It worked great.I then decided to also share the external device over hardwire lan with my wife's iMAC so whe could back-up with Time MAchine as well.I then started reading posts that suggested the two Time Machine instances would compete for space on the back-up array and eventually it would fill up a I'd have problems. The solution, everyone said, was to partition the external drive and assign one to each Time Machine back-up.I did this and everything seemed to be working great until the remote client tried to run back-up.

It fails with the "Disk does not support AFP features" error message.Current status, local machine back-up works fine.  Remote machine cand find the drive and connect once I provide correct user name and password, but fails once back-up begins. Both machines are running Lion 10.7.4.

PowerPC :: "Vintage" G5 Gets No Support At Apple Store Anymore?

Jul 19, 2009

Thought I'd pass this along after not seeing any threads about it in the forum.

My particular problem is that I have a G5 DP 2.0 with fans that rev for no particular reason. (i.e. I'll be using email and they'll rage and then using photoshop and they chill out.) So, at a time when I can get my unit down to the Apple Store (Farmington, CT) to have a "genius" run the Apple Service Diagnostic disk, I schedule an appointment. As soon as they put the unit on the bar and scan the bar code in the machine, this "genius" tells me I have a "vintage" machine and they do NOTHING for them anymore. Well, almost nothing; he said he'd give me a list of places that would service it (but he never gave me the list).

My main beef is that you have to schedule online and can't talk to anybody. At least if they asked or put a disclaimer, I would have saved the hassle of dismantling it and lugging down there.
