PowerPC :: IBook G4: Invalid Memory Access Error
Nov 9, 2008
I have an iBook G4 1.33 14". The computer all the sudden wont boot anymore and the file/smiley blinks. I tried the Apple Hardware Test CD and got the Invalid Memory Access Error:%SRRO: 00032ed8 %SRR1: 0003030
I tried to boot from the startup CD and once the CD kicked in the screen froze, and other times it says the computer needs to be restated.I removed the ram under the keyboard and still got the same error. I also Zapped the PRAM, Reset the PMU and still no luck.Any suggestions? I love this Mac and currently can't go out and buy a new one.

My 17" ALS Imac is not booting (tiger OS). I will preface this by stating the hard drive has been whining and making a lot of noise for the past year or two. Anyway, a few days ago it froze up and I had to pull the power plug. I tried to restart and got a plain gray screen and saw a question mark. Now when I try to retsart I get a plain gray screen with the following message:
Invalid memory access at: 0SRRO: (then a long address)
WELCOME TO OPEN FIRMWARE
To continue booting type "mac-boot"
To shut down type "shut down"
After I type mac-boot the hard drive (or cd drive?) starts racing quite loudly and then it freezes up and displays a grayish screen with dozens of short, yellowish, horizontal lines and I have to pull the plug again. I have been anticipating a hard driver failure for a while so at first assumed that was the problem, but now I see this memory error and am not so sure. I was planning to purchase a 1 TB drive and maybe upgrade the OS at the same time . Basically I am wondering if I should go ahead and do this or run some additional diagnostics first in case it's something else?

I was wondering what is the max memory that I can put on my iBook G4. My G4 (12 inch) has 128 MB DDR SDRAM soldered in place and has a 800 MHz PowerPC G4 Processor. I was wondering what is the most memory I could install and what is recommended? Also I am only running Mac OS X Version 10.4.11. Is it possible for me to update to 10.5 or higher? Sometimes when running videos on google video or youtube it gets choppy and lags what fixes this problem. A message pops up about quicktime not up to date but I try and do a software update and it says that my software is up to date could this be because of the older software?
Hardware Overview:
Machine Name:iBook G4
Machine Model:PowerBook6,3
CPU Type:PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs:1
CPU Speed:800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU):256 KB
Memory:256 MB
Bus Speed:133 MHz

The other day, I put more ram into 2 12-inch ibooks - my own 1.0 ghz, and my wife's 1.33 ghz (Yes, I know she has the faster machine. It means I'm the next to upgrade). Anyway, this is the first time I had opened them up at all and I saw something that confused me: I know that ibooks have only one available expansion slot for ram. That's what I saw on mine. But on my wife's, it looked like there was a second slot lower down, just below where I installed the ram, but missing the clips to hold the ram in place.
Is this in fact a second ram expansion slot, or is it just the shape of it that makes it appear to be one, or is it a second slot that is somehow unsupported or unable to be used? My guess is that it's just the shape of the hardware, and it only appears to be a second ram slot, but isn't really. But wouldn't it be sweet if there was in fact another usable slot in the ibook?

I have a weird problem with my iBook G4. I cannot get access to the Internet at all. I connect using a TimeCapsule. In total I do have 3 Macs, 2 of them connect just fine just my old iBook gives me headaches. It doesn't acquire a correct IP address either.
I do connect over Wifi. The Wifi symbol in the menu bar gets all bars on the iBook and the TimeCapsule does show 4 connected clients ( I do guess my iPhone is one of them).
So - two Macbook Pros and one iPhone connects just fine to the Internet using this TimeCapsule. It does show 4 connected clients and I do get all the bars in the menu bar on the iBook.
The iBook doesn't get a correct IP address (that is my guess as it totally different from the two Macbook Pros). The iBook runs 10.5.5.

Recently my dad inherited an iBook G4. The Airport works, but it seems to accept the signal broadcast from only one of the two wireless access points in the house. The two routers are being used to extend the coverage, i.e. iStumbler and Airport Radar show two entries, both with the same ID.
My Macbook is fine; I can move from one end of the house to the other and signal remains high. The iBook's signal gets weaker as it moves from the router on that side of the house. Is this a hardware issue (specifcally, the iBook's Airport), or is there a way to specify which access point to use?

I have an iBook G4 which was working fine. A week ago my little sister used the laptop and now I have the following problem:
a) The laptop boots because I get the boot chime, but the screen keeps black.
b) I connected an external monitor to check if the problem was the laptop monitor. When I start the computer, I get a gray screen (in the external monitor), but no apple icon () and cannot pass from this gray screen.
c) I noticed that the caps lock light was not turning on, so I accessed the open firmware (keeping hold the power button - getting a weird chime and a light flashing near the case button - power chime ) and I got the open firmware screen (still in the external monitor) and I noticed that the keyboard was not working also! I connected an external keyboard (usb) and I am able to type.
I know I won't be able to use it as a normal computer because of this weird problem. I was thinking to keep it as a "desktop" with the external monitor and the external keyboard. My questions in this case are:
a) Is it there any way I can boot from cd from open firmware? (I cannot do the "keep the 'C' key hold during start up" because my laptop keyboard does not work.
b) Because I get the open firmware console, could this be a OS problem? What I mean is that if I reinstall the OS, could I at least keep using this computer as a desktop?

When attempting to use the Software Update, I get the following message: "POSIX Error - Cannot allocate memory." Also, when attempting to access Safari, the following message is displayed:Other suggestions previously have not worked, such as Preferences, Disk Warrior, etc.Are there any others that may be recent or ground breaking? Is it possible that Tiger is simply at the end of its lifecycle?

My friend was using her iBook when suddenly the screen went black and the following error flashes in the upper left corner of the screen in command line fashion:
dyld: Symbol not found: dyld_lazy_symbol_binding_entry_point
Referenced from: /usr/lib/libncurses.5.4.dylib
Expected in: /usr/lib/libncurses.5.4.dylib
Anybody have any idea what this is? It's a 500Mhz iBook G3 running OSX 10.4.7 (I believe).

Two days ago my MacBook (OSX10.4) crashed; VLC player froze when I was watching a tv show. I though 'no biggie, happens now and then' and hard-resetted my 'book. Tried opening the file again with Quicktime, again, computer froze up. Waited a couple of minutes, hard-resetted my laptop again. Only this time, the screen got stuck on grey/lightblue-ish screen during boot-up.
Tried a lot but couldn't get my MacBook up and running again. Started up with the OSX cd popped in and went to Disc Utility. Mac then told me there was a 'Invalid Node Structure' and that 'The volume could not be repaired'. During a third or fourth start-up this changed to Mac saying there was a'sibling error'.
I checked some sources online, figured out this should be something fixable. One possible option was Disk Warrior. Supposed to be *the* tool with problems like these. I replaced my malfunctioning HD, put an old HD in my MacBook, reinstalled OSX and put the malfunctioning HD in a stand-alone case and connected it too my MacBook. As we speak DW is busy rebuilding the directory but it has been doing so for over a day now. I've read online that it can take a couple of days though. My HD is 250Gb with 30Gb empty space when it went kaput.
Now, there seem to be a couple of other alternative options. These lads talk about Tech Tool Pro - apparantly some other program that could help: [URL]
Then there's a couple suggestions/methods mentioned online that either involve booting up in single-user mode and type some code [URL]
Has anyone ever had their HD act up like this? Any experience/recommendations regarding the programs/methods mentioned above? I'm pretty new with Mac (used PCs for ages, switched to Mac quite recently) and I'm kinda at wit's end here :/. I was in the process of backing up my stuff, but there's a boatload of data on that HD that I hadn't archive yet.

It won't start at all or it starts and works really slowly at first. Like the processor would work million times slower, almost like just hangs jammed. Sometimes after hours of trying to get it started, it will start and work normally again for a long time. But when I shut it off or put it to sleep, again it's nearly impossible to get it started again.
The Disk Utility said, that there's an hard drive error "invalid sibling link". I booted from the OS X installation CD and did the repair, but it said it couldn't repair it. Then I did this fix: [URL]. But again it said the same error. Then I booted normally and checked the Verify Disk again and to my suprise it is now saying the hard drive is OK. But it still has the same problem! It just is having really difficult time waking up.

I have a late 2006 iMac, which I know must be at the end of its life now, but at the weekend my main internal HD developed an error, and it wouldn't boot, even from the recovery partition.Â
I managed to find my old Snow Leapard disks and ran Disk Utility on my HD (when it actually saw it) and the error it came back with was "Invalid Node". After trying many things, I had to reformat and reinstall from my Time Machine back up, which went really well.Â
However, once all restored it tried to do a backup and it failed. I then went into Disk Utility again and it found the same error on the Time Machine drive.Â
Therefore, my question is, could the back up process have copied an 'error' to my back up? Or is this a fault somewhere else (Disk Management etc) that I need to watch in case it cases errors with my other drives that have important information on?Â

I'm having some trouble with my Macbook. It's running on Leopard 10.5.8. I recently tried to partition my hard drive and while doing so it prompted me informing me that there was an 'invalid node structure'. I could then no longer proceed with the partition. I had planned on updating my OS to Snow Leopard. I wanted to partition my internal HD, so I backed up some files on my external HD. I basically wanted my interal HD to run smoothly with a new OS while minimizing the space used. Now I've come across this issue where there is another message being prompted that says, 'invalid sibling links on hard drive'. I found THESE steps on another forum that informed me that this might restore the hard drive back to a readable/functional state but that didn't work either: Â Â Â Â
(These were the steps I took and nothing happened except another prompt informing me of an 'invalid node structure')
Boot off the OS X CD (reboot, hold C while booting). The installer will load up, go to Utilities in the menu and run Terminal.Type df and look for the drive that has your Mac system mounted---you'll have to unmount this. On my MacBook Pro, it was /dev/disk0s2.Type umount /dev/disk0s2, replacing disk0s2 with whatever disk your OS lives on.Type fsck_hfs -r /dev/disk0s2. If you umounted the wrong thing, it will complain that you can't repair a mounted drive. Go back and umount the right thing and repeat this step.Â
I then stumbled upon a few different forums mentioning something about Disk Warrior. I was wondering if THAT would resolved this issue. Honestly, I don't really want to spend much money on buying this but I WILL buy a new hard drive if I ABSOLUTELY need to. I was just trying to see if I can troubleshoot this before I decide to throw in the towel and buy a new hard drive or attempt to try out this Disk Warrior thing. Â
