PowerPC :: How To Turn G4 Into Speedy Web / Text Device

Mar 6, 2008

I have an old iBook G4 (1.2 GHz, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD) that is quite slow but physically in great condition. I want to strip all the unnecessary crap off it, leaving just what's necessary and Firefox/Safari, Adium, SlingPlayer, TextEdit (OK, I guess I'm leaving one unnecessary item on it) and making it as fast as possible, as my newer MacBook Pro is working fine as my "main" computer and I mostly just want a secondary road machine to tote around. Should I just do a complete reinstall of Leopard on it or is there a better way to retain what I do already want before using the nuclear option?

PowerPC :: Unable To Turn Off/turn On IBook G4?

Jan 4, 2009

Had (used) iBook G4 several months now & thoroughly enjoy it, even tho' I live in the sticks where there's no hi-speed/wireless available; I connect to internet & power, which is fine.

This weekend I went to turn off my iBook & it wouldn't turn off. It's now permanently on, with opening info barely visible (like I need to click on F2 to brighten up, except nothing happens).

Currently using my "back up" computer, my iMac Grape, which is pretty much an antique by now.

MacBook Pro :: SSD Speedy For Startup And Launching Apps

Apr 22, 2010

I am buying a new MBP as soon as I can make up my mind which one. I will be using Photoshop and Lightroom for my photo editing. I know a SSD is speedy for start up and launching apps. Does it also increase the speed at which the apps like Photoshop actually run once they are launched? I'm thinking about buying the base 2.4GHz and adding 4BGB and a 160GB SSD drive. I like the small 13" form factor. It will easily fit into my camera back pack. I'm thinking a SSD would be faster for quick field editing photo's helping to make up for the slower CPU. This would be for the field. I'm waiting for the new MP to come out. That machine would be for my "heavy lifting" work flow at home.

MacBook Air :: Speedy Time Machine Backup Restore

Nov 26, 2009

Just thought I would share with you some of my recent findings on doing a time machine restore to a MBA. Cut a long story short had to restore a macbook air from a time machine backup. When I hooked up the 'Powered' DVD drive and a non power SATA caddie up to the machine and pressed options key at startup, it told me it was going to take 8+ hours to restore 17gb's of data. I searched and searched on the internet, but found no way of speeding it up, except for some mentioning that if USB is detected at 'Startup' it defaults to USB 1.1. This cant be it I thought. I had both devices connected via a Non-Powered 4 way USB hub, due to the fact the MBA has only 1 USB connector. The thought struck me about the 5v being shared over both items and the idea was born. Off to the shops i ran and purchased a Powered USB hub hooked it up and it went from 8+ hours to 40 mins. Here are the steps I took incase anyone was wondering:

Leave all USB disconnected from MBA.
Hold options key and power up.
When disk options appear, connect the USB DVD (with Snow Leopard inside) to the hub and connect to MBA.
Let it boot into leopard installer.
Click all the option up to the install stage and STOP.
Using utilities select restore from time machine backup, then Stop
Connect USB 2.0 SATA caddie (with time machine backup)
Then continue and select disk to restore from, the backup to restore from and finally where to put it.

PowerPC :: IBook G3 Firewire Device Not Recognized?

Jun 19, 2008

I'm attempting to upgrade a family member 800mhz iBook G3 from 10.2 to 10.4 using my old iPod as the install drive. (Restored a DMG, etc) Only problem is that (other than being an ancient computer, I guess) is that said iBook doesn't see the iPod until after OSX loads (white spinny guy).

Tried holding Alt at bootup (not listed), setting it as the default boot device (just skips it and goes right to the HD), and just running it from OSX (reboots, straight back to OSX desktop).

Is there something I'm missing? Does this model G3 not allow detecting boot devices at start up? I'm kind of at a brick wall here. Should I just bite the bullet and do a target disk install?

Anyone have suggestions? I have a single 1.8ghz g5, 1gb ram, 10.4.10. I have a maxtor OneTouch III USB 2.0 200gb drive attached to it.

I can not seem to eject/unmount this drive. Every time i hook it up I just have to end up pulling the USB plug or turning the drive off suddenly to get it to "eject" but then i get the improper device removal error/warning message.

I have tried dragging to trash, I have tried apple E (which is what I usually do to any device) and I have tried going into disk utility and ejecting/unmounting from there as well. no dice.

PowerPC :: Unable To Turn On?

Oct 16, 2008

I recently acquired a 15" TiBook from someone who no longer wanted it. He took good care of it and with the exception of a few slight surface scratches, it looks practically new.

That being said...it won't turn on!!

My question is -- does the battery need to be good for the unit to turn on, even if you've got it plugged into A/C power? The amber light on the plug comes on as if it's charging, and it never goes off. When I hit the little indicator button on the battery, nothing lights up. It would seem quite obviously that the battery is bad, but would that stop the unit from running off of wall power?

If it's just a bad battery I'll gladly buy a new one, just wanted to check before I waste my money!

I'm trying to record something through the internal mic (and I'm too cheap to go out and buy a proper mic) and I was wondering if there is anyway through Terminal,or an external program, to force the fans to shut off for a certain period of time? I don't want to turn them off to find they can't turn back on and suddenly the computer is 1000...I just want to keep them off to have a minimal amount of background noise. (And, yes, I'll be running it in a moderate climate so the computer doesn't overheat).

PowerPC :: Powerbook G4 Is Really Hot And Doesn't Turn On?

It just started getting really hot quickly for about a week before it didn't turn on. I would have it tilted so that its not flat, hoping that it would give it more air but it didn't do anything. I don't even need to do much to get it really hot. And I shut it off every night, so it should get to reset itself. I haven't done anything different that I haven't before. Any fixes please!? Also what's really weird is that it gets hotter and hotter even when it is off and not even plugged in.

PowerPC :: PowerBook G4 Won't Power On / Turn On?

Oct 14, 2009

I have a PowerBook G4 1.67 that shut itself down sometime during the day yesterday, and will not power back up. It's completely unresponsive to the power button, with no signs of life whatsoever.

I've tried resetting the PMU. There has been no new hardware or software installed. This has been tried with 2 batteries, and 2 AC power supplies.

There is inconsistency with the color of the AC power supply tip, as it doesn't seem to indicate the strength of the battery. Regardless of which battery or how much charge is left, the tip is Green, and will flicker Yellow very quickly once, when plugged in. It was Green following the initial shutdown, Yellow when I placed a dead battery in it, and then eventually turned Green. Now, it seems permanently in the Green / flicker Yellow state.

It did fully charge one battery while like this.

PowerPC :: IBook Won't Turn On - Gray Screen

Jul 17, 2007

Basically, the iBook G4 (last revision) will not turn on. What is happening I press the power button, the iBook chimes, HDD makes its regular "computer was just turned on" noises and then the computer sits at the Grey Screen and the little swirly loading thing comes up and nothing else happens. What happened before the issue I was browsing the web last night and before turning it off for the night I ran MainMenu's batch tasks. I have been using MainMenu for several months with zero issues up till now. My sister said she needed to use my computer for a few minutes so I turned it back on. It sat at the Grey Screen for 15 minutes so I force shut down and tried again. After another 15 minutes I went to bed (it was getting late) and left it to see what happened over night. Somewhere in my 8 hours of sleep the computer gave up and turned itself off. I have not heard any tell-tale signs of an HDD failure - no clicking, buzzing or scratchy noises. Possible Culprits UNO - has been installed for over a month but it does have access to system files so I'm not clearing its name. MainMenu - Been using for a while but it was the last thing I did before the problem arose. What I've done to fix it - Reset the PMU by pressing Shift + Option + Control + Power Button - Boot off restore disk and repaired the disk in Disk Utility. The volume bit map and volume information needed repair. is the poor sucker dead?

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Dead - Refused To Turn On

Jul 27, 2008

My iBook G4 is refusing to turn on. Yesterday it started going really slow and pressing the power button wasn't bringing up the usual options, so I held the power button to switch it off. On turning it back on it got stuck on the screen with the Apple logo and spinner for a long time so again I powered it off with the holding of the button. I then let it cool down (it was really hot) but now when I switch it on the spinner spins around 6 times then it turns itself off. It is still chiming. I'm away from home and don't have any discs - anything I can try or is it time for the Genius bar?

PowerPC :: Ibook Shut Off After Re-installing OS X Now Won't Turn On?

Jan 16, 2009

I bought an ibook a little while ago because I wanted a small, simple notebook and I love my home iMac. I found one for a good price on eBay and when it arrived everything seemed ok. I wanted to re-install the OS and set everything to my specifications because I was having a little trouble with some of the apps. Anyway, I went through the lengthy re-install and just as it finished counting down the seconds to completion, it shut down. I thought it might be in sleep mode because the little white light was on, so I hit a key and the light went off but nothing happened. Nothing on the screen, no HD noise, nothing. I'm at a loss because I really don't know much at all about hardware or software, which is why I liked the user-friendly Mac so much. The only thing that tells me it's getting power is the little green light at the power connector. I tried a PMU reset (there's no reset button on my model so it was a button combo of shift-ctrl-option-power I think) but that didn't do anything.

PowerPC :: How To Turn Off G5 (No ISight) Built In Display

Jan 28, 2010

I have an out-of-warranty 2005 iMac G5 running OS X 10.5 in my bedroom. The screen is very unreliable to the point where it stayed off all the time or gave weird colors and I had to purchase an external monitor (via mini-VGA). I have installed (successfully) spanning tools to allow both extended desktop (2 dual monitors) and mirrored display (2 monitors showing same thing).

However, after hooking up the external display, the iMac's bright display lights up my bedroom. I want to turn OFF my built-in display (i.e. no backlight) and have my external monitor act as my main display --- avoids having two displays eating electricity. Is this possible? (using any Terminal commands?) I don't want the computer to sleep, just to turn off the main display (even manually removing wires will work, if I can find a how-to guide on this!)
