PowerPC :: G5 Dual Pioneer DVR - 111D Won't See Disc Media
Aug 11, 2006
G5 Dual 2.0 (running 10.4.7) with a new Dual Pioneer DVR-111D drive won't see blank disc media. I have the latest firmware for the device. It will recognize burnt media, CDs, DVDs and such but won't see a blank disc thats popped in. Do not know what to do. Is it a further firmware update, a software update is it the media I am using, a preference somewhere?

I have mixed media dvd that has interactive cooking techniques that I need to use for my college course. When I put the dvd in the combo drive, I go launch the application inside the dvd labeled oncooking.osx The program begins to load but then a finder browser comes up saying "Where is @:xsprocket:shell?" I could then browse my HD for it but I can't find it (nor know what I'm looking for). I don't really know if this is a plugin that I could download or what. I'm running Leopard 10.5.1 on the last revision iBook with a combo drive. Here is the exact title of the dvd: Cooking Techniques DVD, 4/E by Pearson Prentice Hall

I am doing a project at Unnamed Wireless company, and I need to send out a updated Leopard image to 14 MacBook Pro's. this is a Apple that is used as a display device to show web surfing over EVDO. I need to know what is safe to delete or remove on the OS so I can possibly fit it to DVD dual layer media. Unless you can split Mac image copies to multiple discs with the built in image software.

I have a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 with 2.5 GB of RAM. My fan starts revving really loud when I am using multiple apps (Adobe CS2, Firefox, iTunes) and while watching a video tutorial or AVI movie (both saved on my desktop). It also happens when I am just watching a AVI movie with no other apps open.
I just added one GB of RAM yesterday thinking maybe this will solve the problem since I am running multiple apps. This did not resolve it. So I searched the messageboard for threads on fan issues similar to mine. I read it may be caused by the tempature in my room. I keep the tower on my floor on top of 2 pieces of wood about a 1/2 inch thick. I live in a small brick studio apartment so the tempature is usaully between 60 to 70 degrees.
I looked into smcfancontrol but it looks like its for laptops only.I also do not have a utilities program for my computer yet. I was wondering what was the best program out there to clean up/tune-up my hard drive so its running at maxium speed.Has anyone had experince with this issue and have any answers? I am concerned this may be very detrimental to my computer in the long run.

i've recently ask in the forum for expanding my G5 and G4, because the DVD-RW stop working on both. I've bought a Pioneer DVR-112 and install it on the G4 (under panther). Startup the mac and it was there on the system profiler, but when i'd tryed to open the tray, it couldn't go out because it was getting jammed bye the mac tower (some plastic thinggis around the drive hole), so i've notice that the previous DVD-RW didn't had the front part on the drive that says DVD-RW and all the stuff. So, shutdown the mac and removed the drive to see what it can be done. Installed again and now the mac don't recognize the drive.
Information:
G4 AGP 400mhz, Mac Mini, Powerbook G4 12
Mac OS X (10.4.11)
External DVDRW 16x DVDirect GSA-5169D, 768 RAM

I curently have 10.3.9 with a PowerPC G4 dual w/ 1.25 processors and 2 gig of ram. I want the highest upgrade I can get that will be compatibe with my software which is:
Quark 6.5
Acrobat 7.1
Acrobat Distiller 7.0
Illustrator CS1
Photoshop CS1
Microsoft Office (don't know what version but I've had it for years)
I really can't afford to go buy all the software again and I don't want my system to crash. Any suggestions?
This upgrade is mostly spawned due to the recent purchase of a new iPod Nano... Not supported by my current OS! Man, I didn't read the requirements, shame on me. However, the dang thing will work on my kid's PC w/ XP Pro. I only got the Nano cause it's mac - he wanted the Zune that ONLY works w/ PC.

My '08 mac pro has a pioneer dvr-112D in it and it seems to be extremely slow when ripping DVDs in windows/bootcamp. It will take 30+ minutes to rip a DVD whereas it only takes 9 minutes on my PC. I ran the Nero discspeed benchmark and it says the drive is only reading at ~10X max at the end of the test. The drive should be good for 18X right?
This happens in both XP and windows 7.
I've checked that DMA mode is enabled so it's not an issue of it being in PIO mode.

I am looking to pick up an old Power Mac G4 and use it as a media server. Right now I have a 1.6 AMD Athlon doing this running Windows XP. I will only be using this to stream movies to my tv. The Athlon does perfectly fine, but a few hundred bucks is worth getting windows entirely out of my house.
I want to make sure to pick up one of the Power Macs that can address a drive larger than 128gb, which I believe puts me at about an 800mhz G4.
My question is... Who else is using a G4 as a media server to stream videos over to their tv? If you do have a setup like this how well is it running and please post the specs.

I have a PowerPc Mac G5 running Leopard 10.5.8 and I have been upgrading some parts. I installed the Pioneer DVR-A18L, which is the European version of the DVR-118L that is being sold as Mac compatible everywhere. When checking on System Profiler it is recognized as the Pioneer DVR-118L and the following:
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-118L
Firmware Revision: 102
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Generic Drive Support)
Profile Path: None
Cache: 2000 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: No
So, at the moment the drive reads CD's but it doesn't get to play them; on iTunes it reads the tracks and gets the titles and stays hanging and doesn't get to play them at all. When inserting DVD's it spins for a while until it says that a blank DVD/Media have been inserted. I thought it would work straight away as the DVR-118L.

I bought a second dvd drive, a 216d Pioneer, for my Nehalem 2.26 octad. After a reboot it will work for a bit and then give me an error message (code # 0x80020025). The second, Pioneer drive (along with whatever disk was in it) is then no longer visible via the finder. A reboot makes the drive and disk visible again, but the error will invariably return. I believe the firmware on the drive is current (1.09) and it is listed as having "generic drive support" system profiler. I haven't had any luck tracking down a solution in this or other forums.

I would like to set up a home media hub. I have the following devices I would like to be able to access the media:
Powerbook (1.5Ghz)
Mac Mini (Core 2 duo)
PS3 -> HDTV
Old Pentium3 PC to an old Sony tube tv.
I also have an old Pentium4 PC which I was planning to use as the server. I was planning to throw in a 750gb HD instead of running this all off my external (which is what I use now hooked up to the Powerbook). How would I go about doing this? The router is hooked up to the mac mini at the moment.

We've got two laptops in the house (my Powerbook 12 and wife's Macbook) and I've just bought an old 500Mhz AGP Power Mac G4 from eBay, partly to mess around with, partly because it was a great deal, and partly because I want to use it as a media server. What I'd like to do is have:
- iPhoto running on the server - cameras would be plugged in there, photos downloaded etc and photos streamed to the Apple TV
- iTunes running on the server - other machines in the house plus the Apple TV accessing the shared server
- printer sharing running through the server
- Time Machine partitions set up on the server for both my wife and I - set up as double our raw drive space (so 160GB and 320GB)
I've already upped the RAM to 1.25GB and swapped in two 120GB IDE drives. I'm looking to add a Sonnet PCI SATA card and a couple of 1TB Samsung drives, one to host the media and one to host the Time Machine partitions. The media drive would then be backed up weekly to an offboard brick.
So before I go ahead with this grand plan, I thought I'd solicit views on whether it's likely to work, where the bear traps are etc. I guess some of the specific questions I have include:
- is there likely to be a performance issue with the PowerMac in this role?
- can I stream photos to an Apple TV? I know it works with iTunes but thought I'd check on iPhoto
- would Time Machine work OK over a network? Any issue with hosting two TM partitions on the same drive?
The Power Mac is running Tiger, the others are running Leopard.

In the future, I will be looking for a Media Server, namely a Mac. I want to use it to store all my iMovie projects - mainly iSight or DV format, very little HD, stream them to my Main Mac and also to a couple of Windows PCs (not mine), and maybe preview a smaller version (640*480 or 720*480). I am thinking that Mac OS X 10.3.9 or 10.4.11 will do. Especially as I use iMovie '06 and might use an older version of iTunes. I want to use an older PowerPC PowerMac to do this, can I get away with a G4 running at 400Mhz with 512 MB RAM, or do I need a faster G4/G5?

I have an external Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-116d burner hooked to my Duo iMac and since I updated the software with software update, Leopard only recognizes it as a Mass Storage Device. Says it's manufacturer is Prolific Technology Inc. So it doesn't recognize any DVD or CD that I put in it, blank or not. I've tried putting it on different USB ports and Firewire even with no success. I was about to reinstall my entire system just to get things back to where they were before, but those same updates solved a different problem I'd been having.
The built-in drive is unreliable after using a game disk that had too much art on it or something, making the drive make noises. Since then the internal just hasn't been the same, hence I purchased the Pioneer external from OWC.

I purchased a G5 in 2005. Never once used the drive for DVD. So I decided to use it today, and it doesn't work. I tried to burn a DVD that didn't work. The drive doesn't even recognize it. I did some research, I came to the conclusion that I have to update the pioneer d112 firmware. Seems simple but the pioneer update is for windows format!

I have a Logitech Mediaplay Mouse that will not work on my iBook: it reads the receiver, but nothing about the mouse works. At first I thought it was because it must use a non-standard driver (and OS X isn't officially supported in the documentation), but after a little experimentation I've found that it works perfectly on my Cube (running Panther), my dad's Powerbook G4 (Tiger), my brother's Sawtooth G4 (Tiger), and every PC I have. My dad and brother don't use USB Overdrive, but the mouse worked perfectly with USB Overdrive on my Cube and it doesn't work on my iBook whether USB Overdrive is installed or not. I have never had any problems with peripherals and my iBook before. I love this mouse, so someone please help me figure how to make it work!

I'm finally upgrading my iBook, but I'm slightly confused on which type of RAM to buy. According to my System profiler, I would need SO-DIMM SDRAM type with PC133 speed. I can find the SO-DIMM SDRAM, but the speeds are not matching (PC2700 and PC5300).

I've been a mac guy since 1990 and for the last five years have settled into a nice PowerMac G5 with the dual 2.0 processors with the 20" Apple Cinema Display.
I did search on this but couldn't find anything specific, but I am considering adding a second 23" Apple Cinema Display to my set-up for a dual monitor workstation.
I have the ATI Radeon 9600 video card with two DVI ports. I have my 20" plugged in to port 1 and it's running at 1680x1050 resolution (the highest). When I add the second monitor, will BOTH monitors be able to run at their highest resolutions? Or do I need to add another video card?
I had heard rumor that resolutions are a trade-off: if your card is split between two monitors, then the resolution splits, true?
If I can run both at the highest res, then I'll pull the trigger and get the extra monitor. I'm assuming there's someone here who has done the exact same thing?

G4 won't boot. No startup chime. Power button light goes off right after I power it on. Fans go on and soon switch to high / fast mode.
Tried everything imaginable -- removing all cards, RAM swapping, PMU reset, bought a new 3.6v PMU battery... everything on this forum (I think) except buying a new power supply which I'm trying to avoid.

I did a thread search and could find lots of instances of an ibook not seeing or using the battery, but I seem to have the opposite problem. I have an ibook g3 700mhz (dual usb). It will only boot and run off the battery. It will not boot or run if it is only plugged in (dead battery or no battery = no running or booting). When plugged into a 45W white charger (that works on other ibooks of the same ilk), it will be green without battery and orange when the battery is in. It will not charge a battery. I've tried:
two other dc-in boards and cables known to work in other ibooks
two different batteries (that charge in another machine)
PMU reset (the light on the charger changes to green for 3 seconds, seemingly indicating the reset was done correctly)
for fun I put in a hard drive that worked in another machine and added ram that works in another machine all to no avail. What the heck is going on?

I've got a PowerMac G5 dual-core 2GHz box. Can I add another dual core CPU to get a quad-CPU system?
Forgive me for not wanting to open the case and look for myself, but it lives in a little hole that is hard to get out of b/c of all the cables and stuff... just wondering if anyone knows off the top of their head if the motherboard has another slot...
