PowerPC :: G4 Boots In Debug Mode?
Oct 13, 2008
I recently bought a 15" powerbook and when you turn it on it shows the apple logo (grey screen) then when booting into Tiger, it shows a black screen with white text detailing drivers and things that are being loaded. Is there any way of switching off this black screen booting? I have even tried swapping harddrives and reinstalling Tiger but it still does it, so im guessing it has nothing to do with the Tiger installation / Harddisk.

Upon start up, I hear the chime, see the grey Apple load screen, but then after it just reaches the blue screen and stops. Cannot reach login screen, unless in safe mode.Steps I've tried:
-Reinstall tiger (erase and install)
-Replace CMOS battery (time now works correctly)
-Run Apple Hardware Test (no errors)

I have an older style MBP, 2.2, running 10.4.3, and the other day after using it about an hour I put it to sleep. After another hour or so I opened it to use it again. Usually just opening it will wake it from sleep. It didnt so I tried pressing any buttons, no luck. Held the power button til it turned off. Tried to boot up but the screen stayed black and the sleep light went on, but did not pulsate. Tried that a few times with the same result. I also tried hooking up an external monitor, just got "no signal".

Soda was spilled on the side of the notebook. It was never powered on. I opened up the notebook and cleaned all the components. Now the MBP only boots into safe mode.

I have a number of macs one being a G5 1.8 x 2 that has been running 10.3.9 for quite some time with no problems whatsoever. Decided to upgrade to keep in line with other macs but first just to 10.4. Machine only boots in safe boot mode. If regular boot, get message that I need to restart. Restart message reappears and often fans race. May have kernell panic but did hardware test, disk first aid and all hardware checks out fine. Finally downgraded back to 10.3 and machine works fine. Did total clean install with 10.4 again and same results. Is there a firmware I need to upgrade, I can't find one. I have been working with macs exclusively since 1989 (never user a "PC") but I'm perplexed.

Today, my Macbook Pro 15" started to automatically boot up in Safe Boot / Safe Mode. So every time I boot up, I have to wait 5-10 minutes and stuff. It's not normal.
I tried: Restarting, Shutting down and booting.
Resetting PRAM, NVRAM
Verifying and repairing Hard Disk in Disk Utility (it fails). Tried in Mac OS and OS Installation Disk. etc. I got this computer 6 days ago, and there is already this problem. Is there a way without reinstalling the OS? I have Windows installed on it for gaming, but I don't see anything else that could be causing the problem.

I have a feeling I need a new motherboard to replace my graphics chip. I was playing World of Warcraft last night when the entire computer froze and a pink grid came over the computer. Could not force quit. About 10 seconds later, Kernel Panic screen and I have to hard reboot. Every time I reboot the pink grid is still there and it kernel panics, does not get past the spinning Apple logo. I was able to hold down shift and get it to safe mode, and was able to back up my files that way. I also ran the Apple hardware test, but it said no problems found. I am typing to you now in safe mode on this pink screen.

Tried everything from archive and install (wouldn't read disk2 until the 9th try and ended up with 9 system folders). Then tried an Erase and Install. Still it refuses to boot. Get's hung up at the blue screen. Will only boot in safe mode. Now for the last few days even the startup chime is missing. Tried PRAM and NVRAM resets. no help. Won't boot from DiskWarrior boot disk either. Just hangs

I have a week 50 machine with the firmware update that flickers only when Snow Leopard is in 32 bit mode. If I boot into 64 bit mode (holding 6 & 4 as the machine boots) it does not flicker. Can anyone else confirm this?

I took apart my IMac G3 today (2 times once to put in a new hard drive, and another forgetting to put a jumper inside) once I sealed it back up and put the powercable in, nothing, no chime, no noises, no light. I've took it apart another 3 times now looking for loose connections
but there all in.

It's a PowerBook G4, 15" model A1046, and this is what's going on.
Powers on, checks combo drive, gongs, no flickering or lighting on screen, period.
Tried a PRAM reset several times but it NEVER gongs a second time. I tried booting to Open Firmware and typing mac-boot, blind, but nothing. The keyboard clearly works, as the caps lock light works.
The hard drive spins up, the fans run at normal speeds, so everything else is clearly functional.

My ibook has been working great and all of a sudden I have no display. It boots up fine, the eject button works, I can hear the volume if I turn it up or down. This is my second ibook and I really need this one to work! Its only 4 years old 800mhz,256,30GB. There are no apple repair places anywhere (other than the apple store) around here, so I'm not sure if there's something that I can do on my own?

I recently got a cheap used 12 1.33 PB, that has worked great for a couple of months.Yesterday the PB shut off totally while in sleep mode. I couldn't power it back up at first, but was able to after I reset the PMU, and plugged the power cord in. The computer worked fine after that for the rest of the day. This morning, I noticed the PB shut off again during sleep mode. But this time, I can no longer boot it up. The PB chimes, but then nothing comes onscreen, and there's no hard drive activity (so I'm pretty sure its not the screen.)

I have a dead/dying old G4 iBook (logic board failure) and was wondering whether I can remove the internal drive and mount it in an external case, and use it as an external USB or Firewire drive? The drive has some valuable data on it which I'd like to keep, and the iBook only boots for a few minutes each time (if I'm lucky). Is it just a matter of opening it up, taking the drive out, and taking it along to a computer shop who should be able to kit me out?

typing 'mac-boot' gets me to a white screen with black lines all down it. It just hangs there.
I tried zapping the PRAM but it didn't help. The hard drive has been making those *click click* 'I'm about to die' sounds for a while. I'm assuming its the hard disk . I have another iBook with a failed logic board I can take the HD out of but in case its not I don't want to take it apart just yet.

I have an iBook G4 which was working fine. A week ago my little sister used the laptop and now I have the following problem:
a) The laptop boots because I get the boot chime, but the screen keeps black.
b) I connected an external monitor to check if the problem was the laptop monitor. When I start the computer, I get a gray screen (in the external monitor), but no apple icon () and cannot pass from this gray screen.
c) I noticed that the caps lock light was not turning on, so I accessed the open firmware (keeping hold the power button - getting a weird chime and a light flashing near the case button - power chime ) and I got the open firmware screen (still in the external monitor) and I noticed that the keyboard was not working also! I connected an external keyboard (usb) and I am able to type.
I know I won't be able to use it as a normal computer because of this weird problem. I was thinking to keep it as a "desktop" with the external monitor and the external keyboard. My questions in this case are:
a) Is it there any way I can boot from cd from open firmware? (I cannot do the "keep the 'C' key hold during start up" because my laptop keyboard does not work.
b) Because I get the open firmware console, could this be a OS problem? What I mean is that if I reinstall the OS, could I at least keep using this computer as a desktop?

When I add my new Iomega Helium USB HD to my Macbook Pro running 10.6.8, the screen and keyboard all freeze. There laptop has to be rebooted. It does this when I do it standalone and when I use external screen, keyboard and hub. It is a problem with my setup because the drive works fine will all of the other Windows and Mac machines I have.
The cause was the installation of the Iomega software (why did I ever trust Iomega software?) as I only installed it on my macbook pro.Can I run some diagnostics/debug to trace the insertion of the USB device to see where it is going wrong? I have manually uninstalled the software but I am convinced I have missed something.I have a complete clone backup from before the installation but don't want to lose other changes (like email etc) since that day, although I am happy to restore specific files.

My trusty ol' powerbook might have finally met its match. I can not get it to boot into any mode. I've tried booting to the original discs ('C' while starting up); safe mode, single user mode, etc. I've reset the PMRAM (or whatever it's called) It seems perma stuck at the blue screen.

Is it possible to mod a PowerBook to use the MagSafe adapter instead of the regular adapter? I'd be willing to do it myself, but I haven't found any real consensus on whether or not it's even possible.

My iMac G5 (rev A) shuts down immediately after i put it to sleep mode after just starting up the computer. The longer the computer has been on before I put it to sleep, the longer it takes for the computer to shut down while in sleep mode. I already did the hardware test and it said there were no problems.

This iBook G4 will not boot. I can boot it into safe mode, but that is about it. I have tried resetting the PRAM, to no avail. It cannot even boot off of an OSX disc. When I try to boot it normally, it just shows the Apple symbol, but no progress wheel thing spinning. When I try to boot it normally, it appears as if the hard drive is not being read from/written to, because it is dead silent, but when I boot into safe mode, you can hear the HDD noise. When I booted into safe mode, I checked the HDD's SMART status, and it says "Verified," so I do not think that the HDD is at fault. However, it still has its original HDD from 2004.

i splashed some theraflu on the right side of the keyboard approximately 3 days ago. as many had mentioned, i removed the keyboard and carefully removed any liquid residue i could find and kept my computer off for a few days. today i went to figure out the damage and everything seems to work okay in terms of the computer turning on and stuff. the keyboard is still acting up though. the left side of the keyboard works mostly okay, but if i press certain letters, the number along with random number appears. the right side of the keyboard, on the other hand, several keys don't even respond at all. from these "symptoms" do you guys think the only thing that i may have to replace is the keyboard or could these "symptoms" i've described be related to some other damage also? how much does replacing a keyboard usually cost? i'm thinking this isn't going to be covered by my warranty. lastly, i've noticed that when i do turn the computer on, it automatically starts in safe-mode.
