OS X :: Kernel Panics On IMac - Boots Only To Safe Mode

Nov 12, 2010

I have a feeling I need a new motherboard to replace my graphics chip. I was playing World of Warcraft last night when the entire computer froze and a pink grid came over the computer. Could not force quit. About 10 seconds later, Kernel Panic screen and I have to hard reboot. Every time I reboot the pink grid is still there and it kernel panics, does not get past the spinning Apple logo. I was able to hold down shift and get it to safe mode, and was able to back up my files that way. I also ran the Apple hardware test, but it said no problems found. I am typing to you now in safe mode on this pink screen.

Software :: Won't Work / G5 Boots Only In Safe Mode

Nov 23, 2009

I have a number of macs one being a G5 1.8 x 2 that has been running 10.3.9 for quite some time with no problems whatsoever. Decided to upgrade to keep in line with other macs but first just to 10.4. Machine only boots in safe boot mode. If regular boot, get message that I need to restart. Restart message reappears and often fans race. May have kernell panic but did hardware test, disk first aid and all hardware checks out fine. Finally downgraded back to 10.3 and machine works fine. Did total clean install with 10.4 again and same results. Is there a firmware I need to upgrade, I can't find one. I have been working with macs exclusively since 1989 (never user a "PC") but I'm perplexed.

MacBook Pro :: Won't Work / Automatically Boots To Safe Mode

Sep 3, 2010

Today, my Macbook Pro 15" started to automatically boot up in Safe Boot / Safe Mode. So every time I boot up, I have to wait 5-10 minutes and stuff. It's not normal.

I tried: Restarting, Shutting down and booting.

Resetting PRAM, NVRAM

Verifying and repairing Hard Disk in Disk Utility (it fails). Tried in Mac OS and OS Installation Disk. etc. I got this computer 6 days ago, and there is already this problem. Is there a way without reinstalling the OS? I have Windows installed on it for gaming, but I don't see anything else that could be causing the problem.

Intel Mac :: Keeps Booting In Safe Mode Plus Kernel Panic?

Apr 17, 2012

a bit complicated.   I have a 3 year old iMac, Snow Leopard 10.5.2 on the dics, but I updated it so..a pretty receent version of Snow Leopard. I had had kernel panics before- it turned out to be a bad RAM chip, replaced it and it fixed the problem.

This time, I was hoping it was the same. I got a new RAM chip, swapped them out and ID'ed the bad one.  Reseated the RAM. Probelm is, when I was trying to fix the problem, I had booted in Safe Mode.  Now the iMac starts up normally- the chime, the Apple- AND the Safe Mode bar.

Which progresses for about 5 seconds before another Kernel panic descends.  This happens whether the keyboard is connected or not.  At this point the Safe Mode at startup bugs me more than the kernel panics! Sigh.

I wonder if there's any key combo on startup I could try to at least get out of Safe Mode before Kernel panic sets in.  When my laptop has a kernel panic i can usually repair with Disk repair on CD.   I realize this sounds hopeless!  And i need it repaired, but money is an issue.

Software :: Macbook Pro Will Not Boot Safe Mode Kernel Panic?

Nov 10, 2010

my name is SPC Sanders. I am a forward observer currently deployed to Afghanistan. I've owned a Macbook Pro for a couple of years.

About three weeks ago, I made the stupid mistake of attempting to run iOSX so I could dual boot with Windows 7 (all stuff I acquired while I was home on midtour leave.) The install seemed to be ok, however, I noticed immediately I could not make any changes to settings as my administrator password was no longer working. (Administrator is my only account on this laptop.)

At fear of losing my operability, I simply did not power down for that whole time. However, I recently moved bases, and alas, the time came to power down.

Upon bootup, I get a constant spinning wheel. I left this on for a couple of hours just to be sure, then realized it was a lost cause. I tried booting in safe mode, and I got some kernel panic. It says a bunch of stuff about debugger calling the panic, bla bla bla, but the thing that caught my eze was Mac OS version not set yet.

After booting in safe mode, getting that error, and powering off, my laptop will boot into a grezish blueish lightblueish (alternating) type of screen, which sometimes has the spinning wheel, sometimes not. Again, nothing.

I understand I will probably need my OS disc to fix this, but I didn't bring it with me. Am I SOL?

OS X :: Constant Kernel Panics On IMac

Apr 10, 2009

My computer is having constant kernel panics. I have had about 10 in the past 18 hours, and I am starting to freak out about it. Here is the info from the error report:

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: firefox-bin
Mac OS version:
9G55
Kernel version:
Darwin Kernel Version 9.6.0: Mon Nov 24 17:37:00 PST 2008; root:xnu-1228.9.59~1/RELEASE_I386
System model name: iMac5,1 (Mac-F42786A9)

The part that says BSD process name corresponding to current thread has changed every time. When I have apps open, it will read the name of the apps extension but if I don't run anything it will say "system kernel" or something.

PowerPC :: IMac G4 Kernel Panics - Overheating?

Aug 9, 2007

Yesterday a friend gave me a really nice 17" iMac G4 he was planning to throw out because it was having problems. I would really like to get this working and would potentially be willing to buy parts to repair it. I have a significant amount of Apple hardware experience, but would like to get the opinions of people who may be more familiar with iMacs than myself on these forums. The problem is that the computer has random kernel panics. Sometimes it occurs as soon as the computer is turned on, sometimes after it has been on for a few minutes, sometimes after a few hours. So far, I have replaced the RAM with known good sticks, have replaced the hard drive with a tested good one from my collection (and these were both upgrades to boot!) and I have re-applied thermal paste (Arctic Silver) to all key components (CPU, ends of heatpipe, GPU) but to no avail, I still have the same problem.

IMac :: Getting Kernel Panics - Freezing / Locking

Jul 14, 2009

Our 1st gen 24" iMac was giving us Kernel Panics under Tiger 10.4.11 recently it all started two months ago. We took it into the Apple store for a Cleaning and fresh install of Leopard.
When we received it back it locked/froze up immediately, forcing a hard restart. When I called the store they said one of my sticks of ram was not techinically bad but still suspect. This is what I did after that call.

1. Checked the ram physically (the Apple store had placed my 512mb Apple ram stick in slot 0) which I thought very strange.
2. I corrected the ram, meaning I put the 2gb (suspect) stick in slot 0 and the 512 Apple ram in slot 1. Things were better it would take 10-15 minutes of use before locking up not 1-2 minutes.
3. I placed a new stick of Crucial (2gb from OWC) in place of the supect stick. that has had ZERO affect, our mac still freezes.
4. I pulled out the 512mb Apple (Micron) ram and replaced it with a 1gb Micron stick from OWC and that gives us roughly 20-40 minutes of time befroe freezing.

The software is up to date, I've max'd out the ram (new ram per Apple's request) and all we have running is iTunes in the background to stream to AppleTV and a few tabs of Safari open when this locks up. Right before it freezes we notice lines arcoss the application windows almost as though there a distorted pixels. When we took it in (running Tiger) the Apple Tech did check the drive and boot from their network and said our HD was not the issue, but it wasn't up long enough to cause kernel panic.

IMac :: Strange Noise And Occasional Kernel Panics

Sep 30, 2010

I have a 24" iMac which is just over 12 months old. I noticed recently that occasionally the iMac emits a short burst of grey noise, a sort of hissing which distorts whatever sound is being emitted at the time, (music or whatever). This happens at no particular time and when running no particular program. I have tested it with external speakers and also headphones to confirm that it is not the built in speakers that are causing the problem. The sound burst usually lasts just a couple of seconds. It is not particularly loud and is something I can live with. Also recently the same machine has suffered from occasional kernel panics. Usually after being on for some time. Again at no particular time or process. If I restart the computer it often panics again.

I am starting to think that the screen issue is finally starting to shows its true colours. Yes, I've done the PRAM resets, disk repairs, up-to-date with all the software etc. No joy.

Hardware :: Imac G5 Applications Quitting And Kernel Panics?

Apr 14, 2009

I purchased an imac g5 on ebay about 2 months ago. She said it's an older computer that is in good working condition except it may need restarted a few times every now and then. Everything worked fine for the first few weeks.. but now when I try to power it up it makes a loud crackling noise and freezes. After about 5 or 6 times of restarting it I can finally get it to start up correctly. But then my applications quit unexpectedly all the time.. especially safari.. and illustrator and indesign a lot too. I ran the extended hardware test and it fails on the memory.

IMac :: Started To Freeze - Only Works In Safe Mode

Jun 20, 2009

I have a new IMac 24" and it has started to freeze and not respond. At one point it would only work in Safe mode. After working with Apple for several hours, we did a complete ease and reload of the OS. It would only install the first disk. We called Apple again and made an appointment at the local store. Brought it in and it booted right up. He even reinstalled the OS for us. We brought it back home, plugged everything in and it worked. It then started having the same issues after 4 days. I forced shut it down and unplugged everything. Plugged in the keyboard and mouse and everything works. The only think we have is a Lexmark printer - X5320. The strange thing is everything was working fine for 3 months and with my Mac Mini before that. Could it be a power issue? It is plugged into a APC UPS. All hardware tests pass.

OS X :: IMac Dropped - Task Bar Or Safe Mode Not Loading

Aug 6, 2009

So, my iMac intel took a fall. It fell on it's side and has no visible damage, in fact it didn't even turn off or stop working till I rebooted a few hours later. Now when I try to start up the desktop loads as normal but the taskbar never loads, nothing responds to the mouse, and eventually the icons disappear, the screen goes blue and it all starts over again, cycling till I shut it off.

I attempted to boot into safe mode, but after the usual long disk check I got a rebooting blue screen, similar to the nn-safe mode boot up but without icons. I've booted from the startup disk with no issues and run verify and repair on the disk. It said there were no problems. How I can get to the bottom of what might be going on?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Desktop Imac Starts In Safe Mode?

May 15, 2012

A few days ago I updated to Lion 10.7 with which I have had no problem. A day later I installed Moneywiz, Skydrive for mac and did some updates of various software. Since then, if starting from cold, my imac starts in safe mode. I get the start-up sound; then the white screen with Apple logo; then the spinning sun; then the progress bar; then the grey screen with "safe mode" in the top right and user log-in (although I don't have log-in set in my options). Once running in safe mode I can shut-down and re-start; or just re-start and it will load properly. I have tried starting with mouse/keyboard on/off. Is this a Lion thing or what.

Software :: IMac G5 Stopped At Blue Screen (Safe Mode)

Sep 6, 2009

When I turned my iMac on this morning (iMac G5 PPC 10.5.8) it went through all of the "normal" steps (gong, grey screen, apple logo, progress wheel, blue screen) and stopped at the blue screen. Thinking it was just a fluke, I shut the machine down and restarted, only to have it stop at the blue screen again. After disconnecting everything going into the iMac except the keyboard and mouse, I attempted to boot into safe mode but it stopped at the blue screen again.

Next, I flashed the PRAM (big gong, single quieter gong) and afterward it came to the blue screen. I reattached my external drive and selected to boot from a 2-day old backup. Using the backup I was able to log into both my regular account and my "test" account (without login items). I still cannot login (except to my external drive backup).
