PowerPC :: G4 Not Start Up (From Disk Either)

Jul 9, 2008

I had the spinning beach ball today, nothing would force quit, so I shut down with the power button. When I tried to start up again, it got as far as the gray apple, but nothing else. I started up from the Tiger CD, tried to install and it got stuck at Destination Disk. I made it to disk utility, tried to verify or repair, then got this error:

Verifying volume "diskOs9"
Checking HFS Plus Volume
Invalid node structure
Invalid node structure
Catalog file entry not found for extent
The volume needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair.

Then a popup window: First Aid failed, Disk Utility stopped verifying "diskOs9" because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit. I am stuck. How do I proceed?

PowerPC :: G4 MDD Dual 1 GHz - Start Up Disk?

Dec 13, 2007

I recently lost my G4 MDD 1.25 GHz tower to a power surge. I've replaced it with a G4 MDD dual 1 GHz. This is a dual boot machine. When booted up in 10.4.11 I can select the 9.2.2 disk but it will restart on 10.4.11 - Selecting Target Mode, it will boot on 10.4.11. The only way to boot 9.2.2 is with an Option start. When in 9.2.2 and using the Start up Disk control panel and choosing 9.2.2 - it boots up from the 10.4.11 disk. Additionally, when a Tiger DVD is inserted and the Install and Restart are clicked - it boots up the 10.4.11 disk.

I installed 10.4.11 and 9.2.2 on two partitions of another hard drive - same results. I Reset-all in Open Firmware. Pressed the PMU reset. I'm out of ideas.

I really hope I'm not the only one to experience this.

PowerPC :: IBook Won't Start In Target Disk Mode?

Nov 23, 2008

I've got an early '08 MacBook and an iBook G4. The iBook will only work for a few minutes before freezing completely.

I want to use my MB to get info off the iBook, but when I follow the instructions to start the iBook in Taget Disk mode, the MacBook asks if I want to 'initialise' the harddrive. What's that about?

How can I get the data off my iBook (ideally without re-installing the OS)?

So i put the OSX disk in (10.3) and when i make it boot from the disk the mac logo pops up then it shifts a quarter inch to the right and freezes. I then tried booting it normally and pressed the install button now it boots off the CD automatically with the same result and can't be turned off. OS X :: Reports Disk Full And Won't Start

Jan 14, 2011

I ran SuperDuper last night and the backup failed with an unknown error. After, Spotlight didn't find files. I rebooted and at the login screen was given the error message 'backup disc full, delete some files' - problem is, OS X won't boot beyond the starfield screen, so there's no way of deleting files or running the system. I took the drive out and put it in a USB caddy on another machine and ran Disk Utility - it said repairs were needed, so I did this. However, putting it back into the MBP nothing has changed, it still won't boot and insists the disc is full - there is over 180GB free! (I can see this when I mount it on another machine.)

OS X :: Bootcamp Erases The Mac Start Up Disk?

Oct 23, 2009

Yesterday I erase the windows partition on my macbook pro through bootcamp.

Then I restart my mac and it tell me "no bootable device ...". If I press alt button during the starting, I can see my mac partition, but when I choose it, it's impossible to access.

Unfortunately my Leopard install disk doesn't work anymore (really really strange, it's perfect without any scratch) and I can only use a old tiger disk. So I can see that it's no more present any startup disk!!! Bootcamp deleted my mac startup disck.

Through the terminal I can see that alls my data are presents!

Suggestions? I guess the only way to restore my mac it's to buy snow leopard and re-install the system saving the data.

OS X :: IMac Could Not Find Its Start Up Disk

Oct 27, 2009

My IMac is about 1 year old. It is a 20 inch 2.4 intel iMac. It froze today the mouse wouldn't move or anything. My kids were messing around with it. So I just turned it off and back on. After a couple of minutes of gray screen a folder with a question mark flashes over and over again. So I got on my macbook to see what it meant, I found out that the iMac couldn't find its start up disk. So I went to apple support trouble shooting and it said start it up using the install disc which I did. It said go to start up utility and repair the disc. The start up disc doesn't show up, so they said if that happens reset the PRAM, which I did like 3 times, and nothing. They said if all these steps fail just reinstall using the installation disc. Which I did but when it said where would you like to install Mac OS X, you would normally see the Hard Drive Icon and it is gone, there is nothing there.

Mac Pro :: Mouse Gets Start Up Disk Working?

Oct 30, 2009

We have three Power Mac G4's here at our office which have been salvaged for parts in other machines for some time now. We decided to piece together a G4 to play a video in our lobby during office hours. One that would shut down and boot up at required times and automatically play the video file.

I got the pieces working in a G4, and I then formatted and did a clean install of Tiger on a spare working HD we had laying around. After the installation, I ran Software Update and got every last update installed and ready to go. The video plays fine, etc.

Now the weird part:

Every time I shut down, when I boot back up, I get an blinking OS9-style blue folder-? in the middle of the screen.

After trying a few times, I decided to attempt to re-install Tiger. I obviously couldn't eject the DVD drive without being in the OS, so I did what any Apple guy would do, and held down the mouse while booting to force the drive to eject.

Then I got the good ole' gray and white Tiger boot up screen. Tiger loaded quickly and everything was just fine.

I doubled checked the Startup Disk settings, and everything was fine there.

I checked the time/date and made sure it wasn't the Logic Board battery failing to hold data, however the time/date were correct.

Here is a video of the situation to drive home the point:

Mac Pro :: Start Up Disk Not Found Automatically?

Feb 10, 2010

My system drive recently failed and so I installed on a another drive in my mac pro. I've taken the other (failed) drive out. My current system drive which works great so far when my computer is booted up and running, is not found automatically during start up. For example, if I restart the computer it will either show me a blank screen forever, sometimes a missing folder, sometimes nothing. But if I hold option during start up, sure enough the system drive will show up and I can go on my way with no problems.

Software :: Mac Os 10.3.9 Start Up Disk Full

Dec 27, 2009

At work I am using a Mac os 10.3.9 and I have been getting a message telling me that the start up disk is full. Usually when I delete messages from the mailbox it gives me most of my memory back, but this time it didn't. I called my server and they deleted the messages from there, but that didn't do anything either. I have about 88 MB in my memory. Does anyone know what I can do to gain the memory back? I have went and repaired permissions, but that didn't do anything for it. I am not very computer literate and right now I am at home and do not have access to the computer.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Start-up Disk Full?

May 16, 2012

Okay, so my iMac has been slowing down recently and I have gotten the pop-up saying the start up disk is full.  When I got this, I went through and deleted a lot of things and moved things onto my external hard-drive.  I can't remember how much space it got me, but it only lasted a few days. The same pop-up came up and I was confused because I hadn't really downloaded anything or done anything to use that space.  Okay, so I delete more stuff. This second time I deleted enough (my whole downloads folder I forgot about) to get 15GB of space back.  That was just a few days ago. Today, I got the same pop-up and had only 1GB of space left. I haven't downloaded ANYTHING especially 14GB worth at least for me to run out of space again.

MacBook Pro :: Start Up Disk Full?

Dec 6, 2014

I keep getting a message that the start up disk is full on my macbook. I can't upload any more pictures or videos. I've only had my macbook for about three months and it says that there is only 10GB of 130GB memory left. I haven't got that much stored on it, maybe a few videos and 3,000 photos. I can't believe the macintosh disk is full. I have installed the new operating system, so could it be that?

Windows On Mac :: OS X Cannot Start After Disk Partition And BootCamp

Jun 22, 2009

I just installed bootcamp and the drivers from the apple cd, it went smoothly. It was installed on a new 20GB partition. I use Windows XP,and OS X 10.5.7. Now,after the windows was installed, I restarted my mac, hold option and chose the OS X partition, there was the apple logo then a blue screen, and it stayed that way. Blue screen was changed by a bluish-gray screen every 25 seconds or so,but that was short and it got back to the normal blue screen. That went on for sometime and I had to hold the off button for 5 seconds to turn it off. I tried starting os x from safe mode, it took longer to start, but it still wouldn't work. I used the "Bootable Utilities" disk, and opened Disk Utility, and Disk Warrior, checked the disk, they didn't find any errors.

OS X :: Installing Snow Leopard - Mac Cannot Start Up From This Disk

Jul 1, 2009

Whenever I boot up the SL install disk (either plugged in via USB drive or remote disc from my iMac), I select English as my language, "Continue" on the welcome screen, and when I get to the portion where I have to choose a disk to install onto, my MBA's hard drive has a yellow triangle on it and a caption underneath that says "Mac OS X Cannot Start Up From This Disk".

I've used Disk Utility to Verify and Repair, but still get the same result.

My MacBook Air is a 2nd generation machine, 120G hard drive (45G free), and MS Office 2008 installed. Other than that (and all my music and files), it's exactly as it came from Apple when I ordered it.
