View 3 RepliesI am looking to pick up an old Power Mac G4 and use it as a media server. Right now I have a 1.6 AMD Athlon doing this running Windows XP. I will only be using this to stream movies to my tv. The Athlon does perfectly fine, but a few hundred bucks is worth getting windows entirely out of my house.
I want to make sure to pick up one of the Power Macs that can address a drive larger than 128gb, which I believe puts me at about an 800mhz G4.
My question is... Who else is using a G4 as a media server to stream videos over to their tv? If you do have a setup like this how well is it running and please post the specs.
I know theres tons of utilities out there for this but none seem to work. I have an old Tibook running 10.5.8 that I want to use as a webserver. I can vnc to it and I wont even need to do it that much so I just want the ethernet and power plugged into it. No KB/Mouse! I've tried sleepless, InsomniaX, and caffeine but the same result with each. I close the lid and it goes to sleep.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI listed my Dual 2GHz G5 on ebay and hope to sell it. In the event I can't, would it make a good server if I throw Mac OS X Server on it? Would a server be of any benefit since my network consists of my Mac Pro, Mac Book,a nd Xbox 360?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am looking at a Powermac G4 Dual 450 MHz with 1 GB of RAM and gigabit ethernet. I plan on using it for a file sever that 5 computer will use. It will be steaming video to the computers, sharing docs, and most importantly it will be used as the aperture library. It needs to be fast enough to do this or the whole app will run slow. If I finished maxing out the RAM and added a SATA card will it be enough?
View 12 Replies View RelatedAs you probably noticed from looking at my sig, I have a new G4. It has been pretty heavily upgraded, with a 1.4GHz CPU, 1.3GB RAM, two 160GB drives in RAID, a dual-layer DVD burner, a Geforce 6200LE 256MB, an Airport card, and Leopard. I bought it because:
a) Didn't have a Mac
b) wanted to set up a file server
So, how would this work? What I want it to do is serve music, pictures, movies, and documents throughout my house, and I actually need it to work with a few operating systems:
- Jaguar
- Tiger
- Leopard
- XP
- Vista
I don't have to go out and get 10.5 Server, do I?
I have a major dilemma I have a 2tb itunes library and I'm starting to worry about disk failures. Should I turn my G4 power mac into a server or just purchase a drobo.
I'm going to just load about 4tb into the G4 and have 2 2tb partitions one will be used for backup and one will be used to serve the media.
I currently have a 2010 Mac Mini connected to my TV with 3 external drives with my movies/tv shows/itunes attached. I have an old PPC g5 iMac in the other room doing nothing. Can I use that iMac as a server with the external drives attached and have Plex read them all from my network on the Mini?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI nabbed an old G4 Quicksilver from the office. 1ghz, dual processor, 1.5gb ram. I'm going to use it as a home file server to serve 1 powerbook and 1 pc laptop over a wireless airport network.
I've got it up and running headless in the basement, plugged into the airport. Out of sight, out of...well I don't have to listen to the thing. It's loud! Anyway, I can control it via VNC on my Powerbook. I use Vine Server and Chicken of the VNC for a viewer.
Here's the plan. Right now it has two 80gb drives in it. One has Tiger on it and one is empty. I just ordered two 500gb Seagate Barracuda drives for it. I believe that it is a late enough model that I don't have to worry about the 128gb limit. I hope that's right.
I also have 1 external 500gb firewire drive. 1 external 250gb drive and 2 external 160gb drives.
My iMac G3 is connected to a wired router that is connected to a DSL modem, and I cannot get it to connect i jus at get the error message "Cannot find PPPoE Server", but my AirPort express that is connected to the same router works fine...
View 7 Replies View RelatedI would like to set up a home media hub. I have the following devices I would like to be able to access the media:
Powerbook (1.5Ghz)
Mac Mini (Core 2 duo)
PS3 -> HDTV
Old Pentium3 PC to an old Sony tube tv.
I also have an old Pentium4 PC which I was planning to use as the server. I was planning to throw in a 750gb HD instead of running this all off my external (which is what I use now hooked up to the Powerbook). How would I go about doing this? The router is hooked up to the mac mini at the moment.
We've got two laptops in the house (my Powerbook 12 and wife's Macbook) and I've just bought an old 500Mhz AGP Power Mac G4 from eBay, partly to mess around with, partly because it was a great deal, and partly because I want to use it as a media server. What I'd like to do is have:
- iPhoto running on the server - cameras would be plugged in there, photos downloaded etc and photos streamed to the Apple TV
- iTunes running on the server - other machines in the house plus the Apple TV accessing the shared server
- printer sharing running through the server
- Time Machine partitions set up on the server for both my wife and I - set up as double our raw drive space (so 160GB and 320GB)
I've already upped the RAM to 1.25GB and swapped in two 120GB IDE drives. I'm looking to add a Sonnet PCI SATA card and a couple of 1TB Samsung drives, one to host the media and one to host the Time Machine partitions. The media drive would then be backed up weekly to an offboard brick.
So before I go ahead with this grand plan, I thought I'd solicit views on whether it's likely to work, where the bear traps are etc. I guess some of the specific questions I have include:
- is there likely to be a performance issue with the PowerMac in this role?
- can I stream photos to an Apple TV? I know it works with iTunes but thought I'd check on iPhoto
- would Time Machine work OK over a network? Any issue with hosting two TM partitions on the same drive?
The Power Mac is running Tiger, the others are running Leopard.
In the future, I will be looking for a Media Server, namely a Mac. I want to use it to store all my iMovie projects - mainly iSight or DV format, very little HD, stream them to my Main Mac and also to a couple of Windows PCs (not mine), and maybe preview a smaller version (640*480 or 720*480). I am thinking that Mac OS X 10.3.9 or 10.4.11 will do. Especially as I use iMovie '06 and might use an older version of iTunes. I want to use an older PowerPC PowerMac to do this, can I get away with a G4 running at 400Mhz with 512 MB RAM, or do I need a faster G4/G5?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've got an old 12" Powerbook that isn't in use anymore, I've also got an external hard drive with all my movies, TV Shows etc. We run a wireless network through a bog standard router. Is it possible to connect the external HD to the powerbook, then browse and view (streaming them) all the media on my MacBook Pro?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am thinking of getting a mac mini for a home theater. I want to set it up in the home theater to hold my dvd's. Is there any way to get front row to view video_ts folders? I know there is another program that will, but I really like front row. Also anyone out there that has done the same thing that can give me some pointers? I want surround sound (optical out) and it would be connected to a projector.

I can use an Atom 330 Dual Core based machine as my home server?. I use it to live encode videos through AirVideo to stream to my iPad.. but the encoding is choppy and laggy. I have the chance to buy a 1.8 dual G5 PowerMac - would this be more powerful and encode video faster than the atom??
View 1 Replies View RelatedHow much RAM should I stuff in an eMac G4 (1Ghz I believe) to get acceptable performance as both a low-duty File Server and as an iTunes/iPhoto/iMovie '06 Machine? Im currently having this capacity filled by 2 machines: iTunes/iPhoto by a G4/450 and iMovie HD on my G4/1.67 . I know Ill take a slight performance hit, but if it means my PowerBook can go back to being a laptop, its worth it.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom about "migrating" from server to normal MacOS? I have decided to get out of the server environment - it is much more than I need in my little home office network. I have used the "Migration Assistant" successfully for non-server to non-server.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm faced with the daunting task of migrating from Panther Server to Leopard Server. The present server is the Primary DNS serving several web sites (some of which is running MySQL databases). I have the luxury that we've bought 2 new Xserves last year, but due to time constraints, I haven't time until now to seriously consider the steps to this daunting task. We're also currently using a linux box for the firewall (it does no routing, just iptables rules). I want to migrate away from this also and utilize either Apple's firewall or a router. Is there anything out there on the web that will help me in this process? I'm terrified of messing up the production environment, especially since the Xserve is our DNS.

How can i push login script on all macs without adding it in login items? The script i want to store on smb or afp share disk, and will be edited from time to time. I've tried to add it on xserve from WGM, but it threw an error that current directory schema doesn't store desktop settings. So how can i solve this?

I run 10.6.8 server in a VM with Parallels Server for Mac. Lithium pinged me early Monday morning to tell me that my calendar server wasn't reachable. I found it had kernel panicked. After resetting it and verifying the directory structure and permissions, it booted fine. But availability or free/busy wasn't working for all users! The events were all there. Invites could be sent and received but when a user checks for availability when creating events. they see the daily work hours grayed out but not anything corresponding to a scheduling conflict. Â
Things I have Tried:
- bounced ical server
- Rebooted the server
- checked the owners and permissions for the data store hierarchy. (_calendar:_calendar 750)
- checked for xattrs on .ics files in several calendars
- deleted .db.sqlite for several users in several dir in their calendar stores
- in the past I have found that some iTIP invitations seem to get "stuck' causing problems with an individual users free/busy and deleting the inbox resolves this so I deleted several inboxes
-I moved a copy of the data store to a test server and pointed several clients at it.Â
The issue persisted in all of these cases without any change in behavior with one exception; somewhere (i lost track of where) during this process users also lost their delegation preferences. I'd love to find out how and where that is stored so that it can be restored in the future. It seems pretty fragile...Â
I found one way to restore the functionality; copying a users __uid__/<GUID>/calendar out. . Moving all the folders under <GUID> out of the way and dropping the .ics files into ical with their account configured in that instance. Although this worked for selected users, I have many, many users and calendars so this solution would be suboptimal. Â

I have been given the attached one-pager with screenshots of how to configure a Windows Outlook client to work with our corporate email system (Exchange).
I want to configure the Mail client on my Mac, however.
Can anyone give me a clue where these things are entered? When I add a new account in Mac Mail, and choose Exchange 2007, I don't see similar fields. My guesses so far have resulted in "the server cannot be contacted on port 443
I recently updated my Server running 10.7.0 to version 10.7.3 and single-sign-on no longer works for my users. The 10.7.3 Lion Server System is bound to our Active Directory Server running on Win2003 R2 Server. I tried un-binding and rebinding the system but.. no luck. When a user now tries to login to our shares via AFP with SSO credentials they recieve the message Â
I can run the id command from terminal on the OS X server and it is seeing AD users. Unfortunately, no one can log into the server shares via AFP with an AD user.Â

I am desperate for help because whatever I do I cannot get my own certificates to work. When I first set up Lion Server a so-called Intermediate CA and a corresponding SSL server certificate was automatically installed and that works fine. Now, I wanted to create my own Certificate Authority (CA) and a leaf SSL server certificate.[URL]First I created my own CA, and then I created a new certificate with the Server App (ID type "leaf", certificate type "SSL server". (see screenshots below), and I had it signed by my own CA. When I checked the certificate it said "valid".Next, I exported the certificate from the keychain (as .p12) and then I went to Server App's "Import a certificate identity" to drag and drop the certificate onto the window. So far so good.
When I opened the list of certificates (Server App -> Hardware -> SSL -> Edit ) the new certificate showed up once, and after the Server App had tried to install the certificate it simply did not show up any more. I have copied the important parts of the certificate below (private parts have been cropped). The common name and the DNS name are "myserver.domain.private", and yes, DNS is working fine.(I stopped started services and re-booted in between creating and importing the new certificate.)Â
