PowerPC :: Managing EMac G4 As A File Server/ ITunes And IPhoto Machine
Feb 14, 2010
How much RAM should I stuff in an eMac G4 (1Ghz I believe) to get acceptable performance as both a low-duty File Server and as an iTunes/iPhoto/iMovie '06 Machine? Im currently having this capacity filled by 2 machines: iTunes/iPhoto by a G4/450 and iMovie HD on my G4/1.67 . I know Ill take a slight performance hit, but if it means my PowerBook can go back to being a laptop, its worth it.

I already have the iMac up and running and would like to bring my eMac libraries over to the new iMac. Is the easiest way to this is drag and drop files on the iMac from the eMac using firewire? How do I mount the eMac as an external drive? I bought a new ibook in the the past, but never transfered my 25,000+ picture iPhoto or 3,000+ iTunes libraries to it (saved space). Also, I assume all I have to do for the copy protected aac files I have downloaded on the eMac is to add my log in to the iTunes on the iMac?

I got a new IMAC a few months ago and loaded some pictures to it. I finally got around to transferring my old emac photos (just copied the library folder onto the desktop). Can I fuse these and retain dated folders, etc. I am guessing that I just slot the folders into the library and start the app?

I seem to be accumulating a lot of "duplicate" photo files. Some are in iPhoto & some are in Aperture. I import the files from the camera with Nikon transfer. Then I import them into iPhoto. Then I may import them into Aperture. When I use Finder I see multiple file with the same name & either the same or different file extension. I'm going to stop using Nikon transfer, & directly import from the camera to iPhoto. Is there a way to sync photo files to eliminate duplicates or an easy way to organize files so I can delete duplicates?

What do you think? My design company is all PC-based, but recently our file server has been spreading viruses, so I'm looking into switching our server to Mac Mini running OSX. But, on a second thought, I was wondering if I'm better off just to get the new Mac Pro, so my staffs can use it for the occasional AE and Maya rendering; that way they can go on with other business while rendering stuff.

I was wondering how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:Three Ethernet Cables Now how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? Also, I do not want to use CDs and have no CDs that came with the computers. I want to put Xubuntu on the eMac and Debian on the iMacs and erase the rest of the Hard Drives. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4 in my Signature.

I am looking at a Powermac G4 Dual 450 MHz with 1 GB of RAM and gigabit ethernet. I plan on using it for a file sever that 5 computer will use. It will be steaming video to the computers, sharing docs, and most importantly it will be used as the aperture library. It needs to be fast enough to do this or the whole app will run slow. If I finished maxing out the RAM and added a SATA card will it be enough?

As you probably noticed from looking at my sig, I have a new G4. It has been pretty heavily upgraded, with a 1.4GHz CPU, 1.3GB RAM, two 160GB drives in RAID, a dual-layer DVD burner, a Geforce 6200LE 256MB, an Airport card, and Leopard. I bought it because:
a) Didn't have a Mac
b) wanted to set up a file server
So, how would this work? What I want it to do is serve music, pictures, movies, and documents throughout my house, and I actually need it to work with a few operating systems:
- Jaguar
- Tiger
- Leopard
- XP
- Vista
I don't have to go out and get 10.5 Server, do I?

Can I use Time Machine to back up a file share? I'm thinking of attaching 2 external drives to a mac mini server, the first HD to host an network file share, the second would be a RAID for Time Machine backups of the file share HD.
Does Lion Server come with the Time Machine client software?

Every time I try to "share" (move them out) my iPhoto files and move them out of iPhoto to another folder, if the numbers happen to be the same from a previous time, it will tell me they already exist and do I want to replace those photos with the new ones. The problem is they are not the same image, and I don't want to loose the older ones by replacing them with the new ones. How do I avoid this? I've tried to rename them in iPhoto and it still says they are the same number. I'm trying to organize my thousands of images.

I am trying to retrieve an iPhoto file from a week ago.Â
One week ago I attempted to upgrade to Lion, then realized that was not what I wanted to do and rebooted from my clone to restore to Snow Leopard.Â
When I opened iPhoto however, I realized that the iPhoto library was way further back than I had remembered.Â
I used my Time Machine backup to get my old iPhoto library back (not to try to merge, just to retreive the file) and I get the error message: "This operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access "iPhoto Library."Â
I already repaired permissions on the volume. What gives?

I'am having a difficult time managing TV Show metadata in iTunes. I have over 100 episodes of a single show. I selected all of the episodes and went to "get info" and set the show's name. That was easy enough, but the problem is numbering the episodes in iTunes. I have to go one by one. I guess there is no auto numbering. Is there any easier way?

Currently I have my itunes library on an external hard drive that is connected to my AEBS, I have a few things I need to resolve. My external drive is not always on so whenever I go to itunes and download a new tune my library path automagically changes to the default path on my MAC, thus leaving the new downloaded tune on my MAC and not on the external drive! I do not have the space on my MAC to hold my entire itunes library. How can I make sure that my external is always on? I have a mac mini I could hook it up to instead of having it on my AEBS ,would that be a better solution?
Also I have all MAC products (MBP, ipad, iphone4 x2, MAC Mini, Apple TV 2) in the house and I want to make sure that they all can share the itunes library. You guys/gals with large libraries that have multiple devices sharing one itunes library how do you manage your tunes?

I have ordered a new Retina MBP to replace my early 2008 MBP, and have been contemplating how to manage my music libraries between both computers. My music library is about 60GB, and I don't want to keep it all on my rMBP (to save space with only 256GB available). My 2008 MBP will serve as a repository for all of my music, and regular Time Machine backups will be carried out. I also have a small, portable external drive which will also have all of my music (copied iTunes folder). The goal here is to have the music libraries on my old MBP and this external drive to be identical, for backup reasons as well as to be able to transfer music to my new rMBP when necessary. To do this, I reasoned out the following method:Â
-Obtain new music on rMBP
-Transfer folder of respective album(s) to copied iTunes folder in external HD
-Connect external HD to old MBP
-Open music files from external HD (they'll copy into both the iTunes library and the iTunes media folder on the old MBP)
-Verify that the music files are in both placesÂ
I can also obrain new music on the old MBP and then transfer it to the external HD. This seems like somewhat of a cumbersome manner to go about this (first world problems, I know). Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to streamline, or perhaps even automate this process? I was trying to think of a way I could utilize the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder, but to no avail. Again, my primary goals are as follows:Â
-To have identical music libraries on my old MBP and the external HD
-To have only a small, can't-do-without-it music library on my rMBP; I could tranfer music over as necessary or play it using the library on the external HD.Â

MacBook Pro with Retina display, Mac OS X (10.7.4), 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7

I am planning on investing in a WD NAS so I can have all the family music and pictures centralized in one place. Is it worthy the investment considering the speed and sharing possibility? I have a regular 1TB and I am considering buying one just for the media. Does anybody here is already using it? I don't see often msgs about sharing the iPhoto Library. Is that possible at all?

It appears there is a new Time Machine feature that isn't getting a lot of attention just yet. From Apple:
Access your drive over the Internet.
Say youre traveling and you need a file on your Time Capsule back at home. If youre a MobileMe member using a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard, no problem. You can now access all the files on your Time Capsule drive over the Internet. Simply register your Time Capsule with your MobileMe account, and its drive appears in the Finder sidebar of your Mac just like any other attached drive. Its like having your own personal file server wherever you go.
I wasn't able to find any reference to this new feature in the updated Time Capsule Setup Guide.
I hope this feature is compatible with the previous generation Time Machine via update.
UPDATE 1
This feature is also supported by the new AirPort Extreme. From Apple:
Access your drive over the Internet.
Say youre traveling and you need a file on the hard drive connected to your AirPort Extreme back at home. If youre a MobileMe member using Mac OS X Leopard, no problem. You can now access all the files on your shared drive over the Internet. Simply register your AirPort Extreme with your MobileMe account, and your drive appears in your Finder sidebar just like any other attached drive. Its like having your own personal file server wherever you go.
UPDATE 2
I found instructions for setting up Back to My Mac on an AirPort network in AirPort Utility 5.4.1 (See attached image.)
UPDATE 3
The following updates should also be available in Software Update:
AirPort Utility 5.4.1 for Mac OS X 10.4 or later
AirPort Utility 5.4.1 for Windows
AirPort Client Update 2009-001 for Mac OS X 10.5.6
About AirPort Client Update 2009-001 This update is recommended for all Intel-based Macintosh computers running Mac OS X 10.5.6.
It addresses issues with roaming and network selection in dual-band environments.
UPDATE 4
The Time Capsule and AirPort Base Station Firmware Update 7.4.1 is now available via the AirPort Utility application.

Scrolling through that little window is the most annoying thing, besides, right in the middle of a scroll the window sends you back to the top. So you have to start again. There are updates for iTunes at least once a week and yet none of these make this feature a bit more usable.

When I have iTunes in focus and enter Time Machine, it opens a Finder window behind iTunes, brings it into focus, then goes into Time Machine for Finder. Same with iPhoto. The only thing that seems to work properly is Mail (I can have it in focus, enter Time Machine, and use the Mail interface to restore e-mail).

I've had my MacBook for 2 years now, and it still runs good. But I would like to do a clean install, but I don't want to loose my itunes library and iphoto library. Things like play counts and ratings and playlists etc. I've got everything backed up to my time machine but if I do a clean install can I just restore those two programs or is it all or nothing.

I currently have an eMac version 10.4.11 Tiger. I have iPhoto 2 and would like to upgrade to a better version: iPhoto 6 that comes with iLife '07 or iPhoto 7 that comes with iLife '08. What do you recommend?
I currently have 5,480 photos in one library. This is what I hope to accomplish with the upgrade to a better iPhoto:
1) option to include comments (metadata) alongside the photos in the message text when e-mailing photos to somebody?
2) let you print a contact sheet and include the photo comments underneath each photo?
3) burn photos to disc from within iPhoto, that will preserve the comments along with the photos? Later, you can insert the disc and it will show up in iPhoto with the photos and comments intact?
4) backup to iBook with comments/metadata included?

I have a major dilemma I have a 2tb itunes library and I'm starting to worry about disk failures. Should I turn my G4 power mac into a server or just purchase a drobo.
I'm going to just load about 4tb into the G4 and have 2 2tb partitions one will be used for backup and one will be used to serve the media.
