I installed a Virtual Drive a while ago, and now I can't get rid of it. An icon sits in the title bar and a Disk is present in Disk Utility. How can I remove these?

I have a Mac Air (version 2) which comes with 2GB of RAM. I need to an XP shell (Parallel Desktop v4.0) to use some company based applications, which really slows the machine down. Just wondering if a Jump Drive can be used as Virtual Memory like it can be done on a Windows Vista machine?

I know that we can store the VMs (either Fusion or Parallels) on an external drive and launch from it.
But is the speed the same compared to the VMs residing on the internal HD?
Any downsides to storing it on external HD?
(My EHD is USB not firewire).

I've been scouring Google for a while trying to find a way to do this, but to no avail. I have a playstation emulator on my mac and am attempting to mount an iso of a game to play it. (As a legal sidenote, I do legally own the game and ripped the iso myself from the original disc, so there shouldn't be any issues with that -- I just don't want to have to use the cd and keep it with me, etc.).
I have been able to get a perfect .iso, .dmg, and a folder containing the files. The only thing I can't manage to do is mount it in such a way that the emulator will see it as a disc and not a mounted image. That is, the typical Disk Utility kind of mounting. I have tried it with Roxio Toast versions 7 and 10 (10 is the latest, but I had heard that 7 mounts it in a unique way) to no avail.
There is an old program called Virtual CD-RW ([URL]), but the application won't even open when I downloaded the demo version (double-click/selecting "open" simply didn't have any response at all). However, the kind of language used to describe it seem to be what I am looking for: manipulating kernels in such a way that other applications see it as an actual, physical cd-drive.
Assuming I don't have any more luck with Virtual CD-RW (still trying though), is there any other program/OS way to accomplish this?

My MBP has a 320GB harddrive with like 240GB used on it but I only have two 250 GB harddrives so you can see the problem I'm in. I would like to combine into a single virtual drive so that it can accommodate my Time Machine backups.

Someone just gave me an old G3 Power Mac that works fine but has OS9 installed. I'd like to put Tiger on it but it has a CD-ROM drive instead of DVD. Looking at the currect drive it seems like a standard CD tray drive. Is it possible to swap out this drive with a DVD drive or do I have to have a special type of drive approved by Apple? I'm doing this so that my kids will have a access to another computer in my office.

My cd/dvd drive busted WHILE I was upgrading the OS to 10.5. Now I get the folder with the question mark when I start up, or a blank screen. Other than installing a new cd/dvd drive, how can I install the OS without the drive? I only have other Intel Macs to use, no PPC.I don't believe Firewire/Target disk will help much in this case will it? I don't need any data from the currently unreadable hard drive - luckily had transferred everything ahead of time, but also erased a backup OS 10.4 boot drive too soon.

My original "home" hard drive in my G5 died and I'm in the process of attempting to replace it, and I figured I would install Leopard as long as I was at it.I purchased a 500GB Maxtor MaXLine Pro Enterprise 7200RPM 16MB Cache SATA I/II 3.0G hard drive and installed it, no problem. However, when attempting to install Leopard, the installation DVD doesn't see it as a volume.I'm thinking I have to initialize my new hard drive first, but since I have no other internal drive available (the old one is dead), I can't launch Disk Utility to do this.I have Tech Tools Pro, but it doesn't appear to come with a tool to initialize a drive.
I tried booting up using the AppleCare CD to see if that had a tool on it, but the computer wouldn't boot up with it (although it did boot up with Tech Tools Pro).Is there another tool I need to be able to boot up from the CD-ROM and perform an initialization on my new hard drive?

I got a powermac G5 Quadcore with 1 internal harddrive. I wanted to replace the drive + add a second drive and then install Leopard on two ultra fast drives preferable in raid0 if possible.
But when I add the second drive Disk Util can't find the drive. I tried swaping the drives and it's always the hd sitting in the bottom tray that can't be found and not a specific harddrive. Therefore I'm thinking it's the motherboard / power supply, sata power cable or sata data cable. I tried to swap the sata data cable did not help anything. I tried just having 1 hd in the computer in the bottom slot still not possible to find the drive, therefore I'm thinking it's not a powersupply problem but I might be wrong.
Anything I could have forgot to check or do with the new drives to make it visiable?
I tried to install Leopard on the drive I could se (after trying for a day to find both hd's from the installer disk util to make the raid) - but it did not help anything in Leopard I still can't se the second drive.
Sata = no jumpers right?
Could filesystem on the new drives have anything to say?
Anything else?
I'm affraid it looks like I need to have the computer to service to have it fixed for something that never worked appraently and I don't have warrenty anymore

About 2 years ago, I added a hard drive in the second hard drive compartment. I would like to replace it with a recently purchased 1 TB SATA hard drive that is desperately needed, but the hard drive in the second compartment will NOT budge whatsoever. I've tried wiggling the hard drive side to side for hours, bloody scratched up hands, screwdriver method Apple suggests, chop sticks that another reader suggested, even a string with a knot to no avail. I don't have rubber clamps as one reader suggested. Does anyone else have any other suggestions besides going to a store and paying them to remove it?

Have successfully installed a Seagate Barracuda 160GB internal HD (2nd HD) and it's icon is mounted on the desktop. I used Disc Utility to format the drive (Mac OS Extended-Journal), but was unable to install Tiger because of a faulty install DVD (I think). I tried the Panther install DVD's that came with the G5, but am unable to open the the first DVD of that set either (get the grey screen with no wheel, with strange color lines).
More importantly, the drive somehow has a complete duplicate of my other drive. Everything! Also, it updates with things that that I download or add to my Panther drive. How is this, if I did an erase and format using Utility? I'd like to use this 2nd HD as a backup HD (if I can ever get an install DVD to open). Why doesn't the 2nd HD show in the Start up Disc Window? How do I successfully erase it and format this 2nd HD? How would I run a different OS on this 2nd HD?

I'm having a problem getting my CD drive door to open (the CD drive was empty when the problem started). Have tried pushing and holding down keyboard eject key, holding down mouse key while restarting, and typing "eject cd" in open format. When I do these things, the drive repeatedly makes a sort of "grunt" (effort noise) but doesn't pop open, so this appears to be a mechanical problem. I removed the drive faceplate and was finally able to open the drive by pushing the manual eject button and pulling on the tray, though it requires some finagling and doesn't always work. When the tray does open this way, it does not automatically roll all the way out or back in, but has to be pulled/pushed, and once it shuts, it once more can't open without manual intervention. However, I discovered that as long as there's a CD in the tray, it opens and closes fine. While always keeping a CD in the drive is a temporary fix.

I am still just a little confused about installing OS X onto the second (new) hard drive.
Questions:
1. Is it necessary to install an operating system? What are the advantages of doing so? Can I use it without installing?
2. If I do install, do I have to buy another version of OS X or can I use the same one I installed on my first hard drive?

I have a pioneer 111d drive that is in a external enclosure, that I don't use anymore. I would like to put it in my mac pro. How much current do the drives draw when in idle or stand by mode. The only reason I ask. Is because, I have no need for a mac pro with two drives, as of now. I would be adding the second drive just because I can. I would pass on this if I new it was just sitting their wasting energy.

I have a Mac G4 with two hard drives installed. The Main drive (original) is a 38.18 GB. The Second drive - (I added later) is a 149.05 GB. It has Mac OS X 10.4.11 installed. This Mac does not have a DVD drive, only CD-RW. Also, I have no critical data on here - I use it as a utility machine. It is in a network with an iMac and Windows XP machine.
My problem is that the Main drive is now "full" - only 483 MB available. I have uninstalled all "non-essential" applications but find it often gives me a "Your Startup Drive is Full" message.
How can I make the second drive the "main" - boot drive?
OR, and I thought I knew everything - can I install applications like iTunes, Adobe reader, Microsoft Office on the second drive and run them from there? - If so, how would I do that?

Since aquiring my own Mac G4 digital audio for dirt cheap (£0 ) I've been reassembling the peices. It works entirely, but I have a strange problem with the optical drives. Since the guy I had got it from removed almost everything (RAM, CD/DVD, HDD), I used spare parts to get it running. It boots into OSX 10.5 fine and everything seems to work ok, but upon powering the mac up, it ejects the DVD drive tray when the gray screen shows. It's done it with every drive I have tried and stops me from booting from CDs.
Is there any reason it could be doing this? These drives I know work 100%.

I have royally screwed up! I want to erase the hard drive on my Power Mac G4 to prepare it to go to my son. I thought I was doing it right, but had forgotten to put the energy saver on "never turn off" so the screen dims when I try to continue with the erasing. Tried to start over with an install disk in the tray. Now can't access the original disk.
