Windows On Mac :: Any Way To Expand Virtual Drive?
Oct 4, 2010
I used the typical installation in parallels 5, of which it automatically set up the virtual hard drive size. if I find I need more space later on, is there anyway I can expand the virtual hard drive size? I have a macbook pro i7 2010 running windows 7 pro 64 bit.

I know that we can store the VMs (either Fusion or Parallels) on an external drive and launch from it.
But is the speed the same compared to the VMs residing on the internal HD?
Any downsides to storing it on external HD?
(My EHD is USB not firewire).

I plan to copy my entire Windows partition from my Mac, delete old partition, make a new Windows partition (~500GB), copy it over onto that partition, and go!Do I have that right? All I need to know is what I should use to do the copying? Or cloning I should say.

I have recently purchased a hybred 750GbHDD as an upgrade for my MAC Book Pro (Intell Version) I have a boot camp partition to the original 500GB HDD. How can I expand both partitions to fit the new drive? I have tried bootcamp and have had no luck due to the fact that boot camp doesn't see the additional HDD space of 250Gb. What am I not doing?

basically my wallpaper image flashes and any windows I have minimized to the Dock expand whenever iTunes changes tracks. It's not a huge problem, but it can be a bit of a pain (there, it just happened again, I had to minize stuff in order to get back to this window).
P.S.: I listed the topic under Lion because it never happened before I upgraded to it.

I recently purchased a 120gb SSD to put in my mac mini. In preparation for this, I created a second partition on my drive as a data drive where I will store things in order to make a time machine backup with the 120gb drive. Everything went as planned, except now, I cannot expand my data partition to use the whole disk. Below is a screen capture of what I'm talking about:
To accomplish putting my OS on only 120GB of hard drive, I've made symbolic links for most of the folders in my ~/ folder
This is what the ~/ Folder looks like on my Macintosh HD partition
This is where these files are actually located
As far as I can gather, the only way I can combine these partitions now is to re-format the entire drive, which as you can see would cause me many problems. How to expand a partition "upwards" for lack of a better term? I'm fairly new to Mac.

I wasn't sure if it wouls be a bad idea if I wiped the interal hard drive while I'm booting from a recovery disk, then made a RAID 0 with the internal drive and my FW800 external drive. I'm nearing my max for the internal drive. I have a second FW400 drive backing up with Time Machine. I was hoping to just wipe, make the raid volume, and then restore from the Time Machine backup.
I guess even before that, my FW800 is not working in Lion. I reformatted while connected by USB, reset power management, and reset PRAM, but the firewire bus panics and takes out the Time Machine on FW400 as well. Is there a fix for this somewhere that I'm missing? I bought the FW800 drive for the above reason, only to run into a wall trying to make it work. I really don't want to do a RAID 0 with a USB connection.
I'm not going to try setting up the RAID 0 until I get the FW800 drive working reliably, but I was hoping to kill two birds with one stone.

I have a mac powerbook g3 laptop and have successfully installed Virtual PC on. My problem is that when I open Virtual PC it just comes up with a black Virtual PC programme window. Once its done that I am unable to do any thing with Virtual PC because its frozen and in order to get out of the programme I have to force quit it. What do I do to get it to run windows 98? (I have both the Virtual PC disk and the windows 98 disk).

I am going to upgrade to Windows 7 sometime soon when it comes out. I have a question though. I know with Windows 7 Pro that one of the features is running XP seamlessly through a Virtual machine. I don't want to fork out an extra 100 bucks, so I am going to just go with Home Premium. My question to you guys is, is there a free third party way to run a Windows XP/Windows 2000 virtual machine with Windows

But on the G5 next to it, I need to do some Windows testing. I managed pretty well with getting Parallels Window environments into a sandbox, just internet connectivity, access to the optical drives and one shared drive is perfect, and I want to achieve the same level of a sandbox in Virtual PC v7.
Background is, I've used VPC v3 on G3, v5 on my G4. Both of these were a dream (OK slow on the G3) but VPC 7 is required to run on my dual G5. From the manual I see it installs all kinds of intergration tools into the heart of the Mac OS (ouch), requires a restart (I restart about once every 3 months due to the amount of stuff I keep running). I can live with this, if I can be sure that I can turn off all the integration tools I don't want. From the manual I can see all the Application and Client OS Environment settings, some look as though they turn off unwanted features, but I would like to know from someone who used it, just how configurable it is into getting it into the proverbial sandbox.

trying to open DVDFab 6 under VMWare Fusion 2.0.5. All of my other needed applications run fine in VMWare, and DVDFab runs great via Bootcamp (Windows 7 RC 7100). My last hurdle to be fully switched over from my old PC is to get DVDFab up and running, preferrebly in VMWare so I don't have the hassle of having to reboot.

I'm not very good at computers, and I don't know a lot about them, so please bear with me.
I want to install VMware on my iMac, so I'll be able to use Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows, which supports VBA, which I need for my work.
But I've heard a lot about how it's possible for something to go wrong while using the virtual machine, which might cause the whole HDD to get corrupted, as I've read here.
So I'm going to install VMware on my iMac, and partition my external HDD (111GB) so that I can install a virtual machine (Windows OS) on it, without risk of corrupting the whole HDD.
Now here's the big question:
If I were to install the virtual machine onto this external HDD, would I still be able to disconnect it from my iMac when I'm not running neither VMware nor the virtual machine at all? Would my iMac be alright if I were to start it up without the external HDD connected?
I ask this because I use this same external HDD to transfer big data files to and fro from different computers. So I will need to disconnect it from the iMac frequently.

I have tried both Parallels and VMware, but neither one will connect to the internet. I've searched all over for solutions for both and have yet to find something that will work. I've tried setting in each app as well as in OSX, but to no avail.
Let me know what information you need about my setup.

'd like to run Win 7 on virtualization software, but not sure of the best way to back up, as I've been reading a lot about how Time Machine (unless you configure it not to) will save the VM folder as one large file, which of course could make the back up tens of GBs and bloat a drive quickly. I'm planning to connect an external HDD partitioned for both Time Machine (for incremental backups) and Superduper(for more easily bootable restore).
VMware Fusion (for instance) recommends backing up within the VM itself. But this alone doesn't seem like a good strategy for catastrophic failure of a HDD.

I am trying to setup an XP virtual machine with its own IP address on the iMac so I can remote into it from my laptop. I have tried both VMWare Fusion and Parallels to do this. But the VM only sees the network in Shared mode (called Bridged mode in VMWare). But in that mode, the VM gets a random IP address not in the same subdomain as my local network.
When I change the networking mode to Bridged (called NAT in VMWare) the VM gets an IP in the correct sub domain (192.168.0.xxx) and it gets the auto configured Gateway (192.168.0.1) and DNS Server (192.168.0.1) but I can't see any machines on the network. I can't even ping the router (192.168.0.1). The only thing I can see (Ping) is the host iMac (192.168.0.3). But I can't see any other machines or connect to the internet.
I am getting identical behavior in both Parallels and VMWare fusion which makes me think I am doing something wrong.

I just bought my first mac a few days ago. It's a white macbook with snow leopard. I'm still getting used to everything on the mac side
I partitioned the 250 GB hard disk as:
Partition 1: 70 GB, Mac OS X
Partition 2: 150 GB, FAT32 for data sharing
Partition 3: 30 GB, FAT32 for Windows XP running through bootcamp
Everything works fine so far, OS X and Windows XP can see all three partitions. Now I'd like to run Windows in a virtual machine. I've done a lot of searching and can't find a solution where both Mac OS and the virtualized machine can see the large FAT32 shared Partition. Is there any way to make this work, and should I use VMware fusion or parallels?
If this is not possible, can Mac OS at least see the shared partition and copy files to the windows partition while the virtual machine is running so that the windows parition can access some of the files that were originally on the shared partition?

I was under the impression that a Windows license is per machine (i.e. a single license can be used to install it in bootcamp AND in a virtual machine) -- is this correct?
Is it the same for Office 2010 Pro?

This is the setup: I have a MBA (13", 4G, 250GB) runing with Lion (upgraded from snow leopard). I need to install windows XP in VB (yes, it must be XP). I have already installed it in my iMac and had no problem at all. While doing it on my iMac I only had to select my cd/DVD unit to run the installation CD and it all worked fine. As we all know the MBA has no cd unit (and no, I have no Superdrive) so I can't use the same path. I've tried accessing it through the remote disk, but once I get into the pop up window, I can only search for .iso, .cdr or .dmg files. The next step I have taken is to create an image of the original CD. I have done it by: going to Disk utility, "new", chosen the CD, create a DVD/cd master... that created a .cdr document. Then through the Terminal I did convert this .cdr into a .iso using hdiutil. Finally I have run VB and... it keeps on telling me <<Fatal: No bootable medium found! System halted.>>
