Hardware :: Network Setup - Time Capsule Or Airport Extreme
Mar 5, 2009To date I've used an airport express as a wireless router for my macbook and macbook pro. Both have been manually backed up routinely on external hard drives. I use the macbook as my main media center/media storage and the hard drive is starting is nearly full. I'd like to set up a system where I move my media to an external hard drive and also automate the backup of the mb, mbp, and external hard drive. Would time capsule be the best approach for this and will it backup an external hard drive tied to its usb port. Alternatively, could I tie 2 external hard drives through a usb hub into airport extreme, using one for backing up the laptops and the other external drive?

Jul 1, 2010I'm not very well versed in networking or IP stuff, but maybe someone can help me. I have an airport extreme running the wireless network in my house. I know my IP number (it changes, but I'm switching to a static #). Is there a way I can access my network over the internet through the airport extreme? I have a mini-server device running on my network that utilizes port 80 and I'm sure there's some way to read that over the internet. (if I'm using the wireless network, I use address http://10.0.1.3/webpage.html to view) Is there a way to view that address from the internet? And lastly, if am I opening up a can of security worms if I try this?

Jul 13, 2007I hope the mac folks can lend a guy a hand. I have the latest AE and it runs great with a shared HD between Vista PC and my Macs. My ISP is dynamic so I'm using dyndns.org. Since I don't really want to leave a computer on 24-7 (for the dyndns updates) I have a linksys router take the feed from the cable modem. AE is in bridged mode. All disks and wireless is flawless. I can access my webcams via the static ip from dyndns, route it to linksys then to camera. But I can't figure out how or what to do to get access to my shared drivers over the net. I researched for a couple hours today and came up with a few people who did it (maybe they didn't have a leading router like me) but they didn't leave enough clues, details or links to research it some more. Apple online support is slim and I'm clueless on Bonjour configs.

Dec 10, 2010I have an older cable modem running Comcast's service connected to the newest AirPort Extreme in my current setup. My computer is a 13.3" MacBook Pro with all of the latest software updates. With all of that said, I'm having problems with having webpages hang, dropped audio on streams and constant re-buffering of video. Strangely enough, my signal is always at full strength no matter how far away I am from the AirPort. Until a few days ago I was using a Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT firmware with absolutely no troubles at all, but things have gone to hell with this new router. I've rebooted my modem and AirPort and I've browsed through the settings without finding any solutions yet. I've tried 5Ghz mode, I've tried being inches away from the AirPort and I've tried going to 802.11g with no improvements. Does anyone have an idea about what is going on?

Mar 14, 2009I have read the threads about my accessing the USB drive on my Airport Extreme via an AFP connection...and it works. Without a hitch. BUT I would like to allow others (who are not on my home network) to access this same drive (with some level of security). Is THAT possible and if so, how? I have 2 partitions on this HD, one is a mac-formatted partition and the other is a FAT32 for PC user access. Or course, each partition has a unique name so, depending on the user, they would access either the Mac or PC formatted partition. BTW, I did some thread-checking but all seem to find are one's that show how to I can make a connection to my own drives away from the home, NOT someone who is not associated with my home network to make the same connection to the USB drive on my APE.

Jan 19, 2010I've owned a Netgear and a D-Link route before and with those, you could access all your router settings and statuses over the internet. The Login would usuallly be the ip address and the password would be one of your choice. I can't seem to find any settings to enable this on my Airport Extreme.

Apr 25, 2010I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.
Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.
My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.
For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.
The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.
Hardware :: Airport Extreme With LAN Setup

For the past two years, I have been attaching my Airport Express to the LAN and sharing an internet connection thus providing wireless access in my office. Fast forward to today, and I've acquired an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS), but I've been unable to get the AEBS to function like the Express. The AEBS doesn't seem to be able to acquire a usable IP number from the router. The IP numbers all seem to be provided by the AEBS rather that the DNS server from the LAN.

Dec 1, 2010Upon getting my iPad and being unable to stream much without huge wait times, I've decided to take the plunge and get an Airport Extreme. Well, it arrived today, but alas it seems that I need a modem and Ethernet cord! Now, in my defense, I've been using a router that is both a modem and a router for years -- and it connected straight to the cable jack, so I didn't know that most routers needed a separate modem unit and Ethernet cord! Any way, it's too late to head out now so I'm going to have to wait till tomorrow to stream my precious netflix -- but I want to get it right this time; so...
I need an ethernet cord to connect the router and modem, right? The Modem/Router I've been using is called the SBG900 Wireless Surfboard Gateway. In my experience, the speeds have been dismal, but I should be able to use this as my modem -- right? Will it be slower than if I bought a separate modem? Does the modem even effect the speed of your internet or is that just the router?

Nov 6, 2007I'm traveling for the next 3 months overseas and I wanted to setup some sort of VPN that would allow me to access my home macs over the internet from my Macbook Pro. I've searched for some setup instructions over the net and can't find anything. If someone can help me out with step by step instructions I'd appreciate it. I have and Airport Extreme with a couple of MacPros and external hard drives attached. Having access to them while away will keep me in touch with things I may need at home while away. I'm running Leopard 10.5 on all machines.

Jan 26, 2010I have recently been bitten by the Apple craze, and am now 100% committed to going all apple. I have bought a Mac Mini, iPhone and soon I will get an 27" iMac and Airport Extreme Station. So I have been thinking, what is the best set up for all this? At this point I have "problems" with my iTunes. My music library is on my windows PC and a NAS Harddrive as backkuo.
So when I want to listen to the music on my Mac Mini I can see the library, but not the playlists and covers that I have on my WIndows PC. Basically, what I want, once I get the 100% apple set up, is flawless integration og everything. Meaning same music library and playlist on both macs, eyeTV recordings and live streamin on both if possible and as much interactions with my iPhone as possible. Are there posts or web pages out there that cover this topic and descripe how the setup could be?

I set up a private wireless network and a guess wireless network.

Jan 1, 2010I bought an Airport Extreme and am trying to set it up. I installed Airport Utility and have my Airport turned on. The problem I'm having is that Airport Utility is saying it can't find any wireless devices. I have the Airport's Internet WAN port connected to my wall's ethernet port and the Airport's status light is solid green. What I want to do is get a wireless signal from the ethernet port on my wall. Everything in the set up guide and everything I find online has to do with setting the Airport up with a DSL or Cable Modem.

Jul 8, 2009Here is my situation. I am a network newbie. I bought a Airport Extreme (2008 model without dual band & guest networking) and have it setup with my ADSL broadband modem. I bought it so I could use the high speed N to connect to my Apple TV. It replaced a Linksys WRT54G.
My concern is this. We have another laptop in the house which only has Wireless G. It is connected most of the time to our network, so I presume that it will be slowing the speed of my Extreme to G levels.
Can I connect my old Linksys G router somehow to my network to create a seperate Wireless G network to access the internet. The older laptop can be at G speeds and my Extreme network remaining at N speeds ?
Maybe an easier option is to buy a N USB adaptor for my laptop but I don't want to buy something if I can use my current equipment.

Dec 22, 2010Running Windows 7 PC, connected to a brand new airport extreme via 802.11n. Running Airport Utility 5.5.2.
When I run Airport Utility, I can see the base station in the left panel, but both options to either run manual setup or "easy" setup give me the same error. Says that it cannot connect to the airport, error -4. Tried everything I could think of including multiple re-installs, wireless and wired, and disabling firewalls/antivirus.

Aug 24, 2009I'm a PC user and have one laptop right now but am expecting to get more. I've just bought an airport extreme so that I can have a networked printer and a shared hard drive. The printer is working fine, and my HDD (Seagate FreeAgent) is showing up in Airport Utility/Disks but I can't see it anywhere in Windows Explorer, or in Airport Base Station Agent. I'm not sure what to enter the Workgroup and WINS Server fields on Airport Utility so perhaps this is part of the problem? I've never set up a workgroup because i've only got the one PC here so far. May 20, 2010I am a new Mac user this year ( I bought a 27" C2D iMac) and finally converted from a Linksys wireless G router to an Airport Extreme. Everything was simple to set up on the Airport. One question I have is how to remote administer the Extreme. On the Linksys I would enable remote administration by opening port 8080. Then from an off site location, I would type my IP Address ( I have a static IP) as follows - IP_Address:8080 in a web browser like Firefox. This would bring up a login screen for me to log into my router. The reason I would like to remote administer my router is that I have several Linux servers on my network that I use VNC to administer. I do not like logging into one server and then from that server logging into another server on the network. Rather I would just change the VNC port forwarding to the IP address of the server I wanted to reach via the Linksys admin. Is there a way to get to my Airport Extreme without going through my iMac?

She is on the guest network so is there any way to prioritize bandwidth on my Airport so that it knows to give the main network priority over the guest network and so if I'm on XBox Live or downloading a movie and she's downloading something of her own it'll give me at least 75% of the bandwidth and her only 25%?
