I want to do a fresh install of the OS on my old G5 because I giving it to a friend , is there anything I need to know ? So my old files and passwords deleted before I give it away ?
View 1 RepliesI decided I wanted to use the 1TB HD that's in my brand new Mac Pro in my late 2005 Power Mac G5. I installed the HD and started up the Power Mac. I was planning to insert the OS X disk and have to reinstall the operating system.
But it booted up fine and seems to be working perfectly. I thought I would have needed to reinstall OS X since the hardware/specs are completely different (especially the processor Intel V PowerPC). I thought it would be having some kind of Mac Pro in Power Mac body freak-out!
Is that not the case? Can I go ahead and use this sucker without any dramas? I've read iMovie 09 isn't compatible with PowerPC. Will all the other system and iLife 09 software work OK?
following the issues I had with not being able to install ANYTHING or do any software updates, i've decided to reformat and reinstall Mac OSX. First problem, when I boot from disc, it allows me to select language then says 'Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer' so I completely format the hard drive and try again. No luck. Same message. WHY can't the Mac OS X be installed on this computer?!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI wanted to reinstall my operating system (I have OSX 10.5.2) so I backed up a few things and began my re installation. I installed fine but didn't ask me to insert my Mac OS X Install Disc 2. I got through it alright and now I have a working OS. So I'm not sure what all Disc 2 does for me, but I know i'm missing garage band and honestly thats the program I use the most. So does anyone else have any information about this (i.e. it happened to you, you know what all is on disc 2, or you know what i need to do to have it ask for disc 2)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was having problems with my macbook pro and decided to reformat it and reinstall os x and boot it off my time machine back up from my MacPro.
The main problem I've had is that I couldn't find my original installation discs (the macbook pro was bought in April 2008), I used my friends OS X disc (from his computer which was about 2 years older) and it seemed to install ok until I realised that the sound is gone, airport is gone and all the keys have different shortcuts to their original ones.
I've been getting slowness, beachballs, and overheating/loud fans over the last few weeks. It feels like it's getting worse by the day. I want to reinstall and get a fresh start. (Btw, I was on Leopard and upgraded to SL...I'm hoping a fresh SL will clear up most of my problems.)
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been having problems with speed on my Mac Pro for a while. Today, I tried to boot up and every time it booted, it just froze! I've used Diskawrrior and diask utility on it. Disk Utility says it's fine. Disk Warrior finds to files at the root that can't be accessed. I've run DiskWarrior about 5 times. Each time it tells me that it has fixed the problem but my Mac still freezes or won't boot up. I try Disk Warrior again and it finds the same problem.
I've tried to reinstall Lion but it tells me that the volume is used for Time Macine backups (it isn't) and won't lert me reinstall backups. I've asked Time Machine (which I get to by starting up using the option key) to show me the backups on my hard drive and it tells me that there aren't any. I try to reinstall Lion and It tells me again that my volume is being used for time machine backups. I'm stuck and have no idea what to do next.

I don't have a DVD drive in my old 800 G4 Tower, so I have to borrow an external one if I have to re-install Tiger.
If I copy my Tiger DVD installation disks to an external HDD or a Flash Drive or an internal HDD (a secondary HDD), would I be able to re-install from one of those drives?
I installed 10.5 on a G4 powerbook and then decided it ran better with 10.4. Can I downgrade to 10.4 and still have all the applications installed? I don't want to reinstall a bunch of applications.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to re-install leopard on my G5 with no success. I boot the machine up start the installation wizard from my desktop, it says that the wizard will continue after re-starting, and then proceeds to reboot.
However on booting my PM always ejects the CD, does anybody know how I can turn this off, as at the minute it's just restarting and booting back to my desktop each time.
I'm installing my new SSD tonight and then using my old hd as an external drive for backup. It's brand new so the only thing on it is a couple days of web history After I install the SSD do I just use the restore disks to reload the OS?

I want to completely start again but there are 3 issues:
1. I don't have my MS Office for Mac original disc although I do have the product ID number and I do have my original OS X install discs and Iwork 08 disc.
2. How do I backup absolutely everything so that as soon as I reinstall I can start where I began?
3. I am not very technical and don't have a clue how to uninstall everything and then reinstall. How do I do this so that any possible threats are totally gone?
I just bought my first Mac, a used Mac Pro, the 2 x 2.66 Dual Core Xeon version. It is currently running OS X 10.5.6. I would like to wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall OS X. I understand this would get rid of unwanted software, let me change the administrator, and let me set things up how I want.
I tried booting up from the install disc, by starting the computer while holding down the "C" button. It said I can't install the install disk's version of OS X because a newer version is running on the computer. My question I guess is pretty simple: How do you erase a Mac Pro and reinstall the OS?
1. Am I supposed to run any kind of disk maintenance (repairing permissions for example) prior to reinstalling Leopard?
2. Since all of my apps are going to be downgraded to its previous versions that originally came with Leopard installation DVDs, and my OS is going to be downgraded to 10.5.3 (I am on 10.5.7 at the moment), I am in a dilemma. Is it better to go with step-by-step update of Leopard (first download 10.5.4 and install it, than 10.5.5, etc...) or go directly to 10.5.7 from 10.5.3 (I think combo update is all about that, correct me if I am wrong)
3. About all the apps that go with Leopard (iTunes, iMovie, Quick Time Player)... Do you suggest me to update them as soon as I install 10.5.3 or to update to 10.5.7 first and then install all the application updates?
Apple have informed me that if I upgrade to 10.6 from 10.5 and at some stage in the future I wanted to re-install 10.6, I would first have to re-install 10.5 and then upgrade again to 10.6. Is that honestly correct? I only thought Microsoft did stuff like that!

i have run disk warrior and though i cant run the repair disk as it is my start up disk. but i did run the graph on disk warrior and it shows that my disk is 42% ineffective.
I am selling my Mac Mini and would like to provide the buyer with the Win7 partition. I would like to set it up so they can enter their user name in OSX at startup, while preserving the Windows side of things. Is there a guide somewhere for doing this?

I am considering reinstalling Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro. At the moment I use one hard drive for the System, Applications and Users.
Is it possible (and easy) to install the system to one disk, and the applications and users to another disk?Or do some applications prefer to be on the same disk as the system?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI ended up getting the grey screen that wouldn't do anything, so I turned off the Mac, then turned it back on again and entered the Lion Recovery module. I selected reinstall Mac OS X, then I was taken to a screen with 2 choices - Macintosh HD or Recovery HD. I believe the Recovery HD was locked, so i (mistakenly?) selected the Macintosh HD partition. Will this create a problem, or was it the proper partition for reinstalling the OS? Everything seems to be working fine, with no more kext errors, but I'd like to avoid a potential conflict if the OS isn't installed in the proper partition.

I decided to Archive and reinstall, my backups are not as recent as they should be. During the first reinstall attempt it froze when I tried to view the install log. I now on my second attempt at reinstalling and a again choose archive (this time the option to preserve user setting is greyed out). With the trouble I had my old files should still be there right?

Basically I want all apps removed when reinstalled complete. I've read OSX reinstall its different then windows, but I want to make sure I can do this clean reinstall. I want to know if the other documents and files will remain on my hdd as I don't have an external disc to back up. Also the system/the internet does not run as fast as those in apple store, this may be because of little snitch, hard drive space, or others.

View 3 Replies View Relatedgot an IBook with its original install disks. OS 9.2. It has Linux on it now and works ok with that. I want Mac OS back on it but when I try to install it tells me that it can't find the hard drive. So thinking that I might have the wrong disks, ( i got it used so not positive 9.2 is correct) I got OS 10 and it does the same thing. When I get to the part that it asks 'where' do you want to install it show no disks at all except the CD drive.
Any Ideas what I need to do? As I said the disks are there and functioning because Linux is installed and works. Is there some type of Utility that I need to run to put a Mac partition back on it? That's my only idea that I can think of. If so what and where can I get it?
Lately my mac has been freezing up. Almost everyday now, when a month ago is was fine (and had been for over a year) never freezing once. I am thinking I need to do a reinstall of the operating system. A few questions, Will I still be able to keep all my current programs? How do I do this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have to take my MacPro in because I believe this thing is supposed to be quiet and I can hear my fans running loud and fast constantly. That said, I refuse to hand over my machine with my personal data. I was considering swapping the 500GB drive in bay #1 with a 1TB drive that I have sitting in a box. Can I use the restore discs that came with my MacPro to install Leopard onto the new drive?
If not, can I back up my 500GB (stock) drive using Time Machine, turn time machine off, reinstall OSX so it's essentially wiped, then upon return of my machine can I go back into TM and get back all my apps and such? All I care about is not sending the machine with a hard drive full of stuff and ensuring my data is backed up so I can easily stick it back onto my drive.
