Power Mac G5 :: Won't Go To Sleep & Front Fan Clicks

Oct 9, 2007

I am working on a friend's G5. It won't go to sleep. The monitor does, but not the CPU. I have upgraded the firmware, to 10.4.10, zapped the pram, corrected permissions. Just at a loss.

This computer worked fine at work where she had it originally, but when she shut it down and took it home, it has insomnia. Also, one of the front fans sounds like it is scraping or hitting something. It is not a loud noise and the fans still work, just annoying to her since it won't sleep. (Sounds like my one month old).

Power Mac G5 :: FireWire Port At Front Of Machine Not Working

Dec 26, 2007

The firewire port on the front of my machine is bad. I can't transfer any kind of data using it. The port on the back as well as all USB ports work fine. Would this need a complete motherboard replacement? Would it even be worth doing? Could I build a dual processing machine or buy one cheaper?

Front Row :: Make Front Row Work On Lion?

Feb 10, 2012

I upgraded to Lion and sadly, Front Row is not supported.  I somehow found the Front Row app in my systems folder and moved it to my Applications folder.  Front Row now shows up in my applications folder, as well as Launchpad.  However, when I go into Front Row, it does not recognize any of my media from iTunes.  I tried out this website: [URL]..blog/frontrowenablerforlion to no avail.  I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how to make Front Row work in OS X Lion.

Hardware :: G4 Quick Silver Startup Problems?

Jul 3, 2008

My mac was acting real slow to boot up after being shutdown and then finaly last weekend it just wouldn't boot up. The power light at front comes on, as does the fan and the red light on the logic board But that's all that happens. Have tried the PMU button and zapping the pram but it won't even chime once.
Haven't replaced the battery as I thought that defaults to 1904 date ( like it did on the old 8500's etc)

Took the whole puter apart and cleaned it. The fuse does not look broken in the power supply.

Any ideas on how to test the Power supply? And what should I do next?

MacBook Air :: Silver Things Are Turning Brown On Reviews A. 1.6 MBA?

Jun 1, 2009

I had an initial thread in Mac Software as I initially thought it was just a Safari 4 Beta issue.(Original thread here)But since then, it's spread from Safari 4 to my trash can and now to Numbers and Pages (It has not done anything to Keynote), the bottom panel (but not the top one) in Yahoo messenger... Even the silver navigation bar on the Apple website shows up as this weird metallic brown.What's even weirder is that the trash can is the normal silver metallic when the OS first loads and then changes to the brownish one. No amount of messing with display settings helps. Resetting the NVRAM initially got everything back to normal, but then boom, it's all stuck.

Power Mac :: G5 2.0 DP Won't Start

Feb 16, 2012

Ok, I know I've had 2 discussions here already but it still doesn't make sense to me. Everything says its a bad Logic Board.  Ok, Power Mac A1074 2.0 DP  It hangs at white screen w/ grey apple logo and no spinning wheel.  I have ran the Apple hardware diagnostics disc several tims.  Everything comes back that all hard ware is GOOD. I try and run the OS diagnostics on the same disc and it hangs at the white screen/grey apple logo.  I have replaced the hard drive and started it holding 'option"it reads the Apple OS Install disc (just as it reads the hardware diagnostic disc just fine)  when I try to boot from the install disc it again hangs at the white screen/grey apple logo with no spinning wheel.

Power Mac :: G5 Won't Start Up

Mar 5, 2012

I have a 1.8GHz G5 that will just not boot up. When I start it I get the grey screen with the Apple logo and nothing else. The fan then fires up and up. Have tried starting it in Safeboot mode. In this mode I can hear the initial chime and some activity for about 5-6 secs and then nothing. I have an extra 2GB of Kingston RAM in the machine that I put in a couple of years ago and apart from this nothing has changed apart from upgrading the OS's.

Power Mac :: G5 Won't Start Up Correctly / What To Do?

Dec 10, 2007

I will start up my G5 and I hear the chime but at that point my CRD monitors never come on. The lights on my USB hub don't light up, either. Then my G5 fans rev up really high. I have to hold down the power button to get it to shut off, then after waiting around 10 seconds I'll try to turn it on again. After several times of repeating this process, my monitors finally kick on, the USB hub lights up and all is fine for the rest of the day. But it's really aggravating having to do this up to five times to get things going. It's like the G5 isn't communicating to the monitors or the USB hub.

Could this be a motherboard issue? It shouldn't be a power issue, as the only thing plugged into my battery backup APC is the tower itself. I'm at a loss here...

Power Mac :: Os 9 Won't Start Anymore

Mar 29, 2012

I received a semi working powerMac G4 Cube from a freecycle community, and while initially it worked fine, I had to dissemble the unit to replace the dvd drive which had a dvd stuck in it. I used one from a second unit that I was also given and I think the dvd is also bad , as placing the 'software installer', which I presume is OS9, causes dvd unit to make what sounds like spinning noise ( Does not sound to me like its reading anything ), and then after a few seconds it spits it right back out, and this happens everytime.Before I dissembled the unit, the cube at least booted into OS9 just fine, yet I am sure I put everything back properly. I might have chosen a bad setting in system perferences I suppose, and if so is there a fix short of getting a new dvd unit so I can reinstall OS 9 ? Also, I did try 'control' while startup, and it takes me to a very odd screen, with a icon for 'reload' ( browser icon similarity ) , or what looks like a right arrow. Choosing either does nothing, short of showing what looks like a watch moving in circular fashion.

Power Mac G5 :: Shuts-down A Few Seconds After Start-up?

Nov 21, 2007

I've got a strange issue with my PowerMac dual 1.8GhZ and I can't figure out where it's coming from.Last Saturday I experienced a Kernell Panic while using Safari and the Dictionary (MacOS 10.5.1).Since then, whenever I try to start my computer, it shuts itself down while the grey screen with the Apple logo is on screen. However, this isn't always the case:I can use my computer 'normally' if I press the option key at start-up and manually choose my startup disk.

I can boot from a Panther or Tiger installation disk, but not Leopard.If I try the hardware test the computer shuts itself down in the middle of the test.TechTool works and didn't find any issues with my computer. Nor did Disk Utility.I tried to erase both my internal hard-drives and do a clean install of Tiger, but the problem is still there (I have to press option at startup).I tried to reset the PRAM and Cuda/PMA. Doesn't resolve the issue.When I tick 'Restart automatically after power failure' in Energy Saver my Mac will indeed restart, meaning it thinks there was a power failure.Any idea what it might be? And why it only happens in certain situations?Do you think it's a hardware or a software issue?

Power Mac G5 :: On Start Up Screen Is Black

Dec 13, 2007

When I start my computer up in the morning everything else starts normally. First the light comes on on the front of the computer and on the bottom of the monitor, then the start up tone rings and the computer is fully running. But my monitor is black and I do not get the apple picture or nothing on the screen. I thought my monitor was going out, but we have another work station the same and I switched the monitors (same 27" cinema screen as mine). I can actually use the other computer and network into my computer and fully use everything on my computer. But my monitor is black (no display)! I have contacted MAC and have reset the PMU button many times and sometimes this works, but most of the time it does not. I just keep restarting the computer and finally it will start up normally with the display and everything.

Laptops :: Can't Start Up My Mac Power Book G4?

Oct 10, 2007

I have a big problem. For some months now I haven't been able to start up my Mac. It's a Mac PowerBook G4 bought back in 2002. It's a laptop. When I push the start button it shows me the grey screen with an apple. Then the screen turns blue showing the white and square icon with an apple, Mac OSX and the line for loading saying "starting Mac OS X..." When the loading sign is complete or almost complete it stops. Nothing more happens. It just stands there the blue screen with the loading line that looks pretty complete. What can be wrong? Some time ago I was asked the message: if I want to use the new way of starting up my computer, and I clicked YES, because I thought it was the normal software updating. And eversine then it hasn't been able to finish starting up. Can anyone give me suggestions of what to do? Or maybe tell me what is wrong? Maybe it has something to do with the "new starting up" message I said yes to, or maybe not.

I really hope someone out there can give me some advice, because now I haven't been able to use my Mac for months!

Hardware :: Mac G5 Power Pc 2GHz Won't Start

Nov 26, 2009

I have a G5 dual pro 2Ghz (June 2004), 1.5 Gb ram, Leopard

When I press the start button, the dvd drive spins, the startup disk "sparkles" (noise seems normal) but no image appears on screen (black monitor enabled), no start-music. It starts correctly after + / - 15 attempts ignition-extinction.

The various reset (pram, motherboard) have been tempted. "Cleaning" the computer with Onyx (maintenance). Battery voltage Bios = OK. The authorization of repairs were made. Repairing minor problems in head volume repaired (the install cd has booted). Tempted to start with a minimum of devices. The symptoms still persist for 2 to 3 weeks.

I have installed a new hard drive. I've installed Leopard on it.

But the problems stay. My mac starts when he wants...

IMac :: Won't Start- Power Supply?

Tried to wake my 24" white iMac from sleep yesterday and discovered that it was off. Pressed the button in back but no go. Unplugged and replugged, pressed the button and it fired up fine. Surfed a bit, then put it back to sleep.

Came back about 3 hours later and it was off again. Unplugged and replugged, pressed the button and nothing. Tried it a couple more times just to check, and no go.

Any ideas? I've had this computer for a little over two years. Bought it used and bought Applecare which expired on.... Nov. 16th. Beautiful timing or what.
