Power Mac G5 :: Shuts-down A Few Seconds After Start-up?
Nov 21, 2007
I've got a strange issue with my PowerMac dual 1.8GhZ and I can't figure out where it's coming from.Last Saturday I experienced a Kernell Panic while using Safari and the Dictionary (MacOS 10.5.1).Since then, whenever I try to start my computer, it shuts itself down while the grey screen with the Apple logo is on screen. However, this isn't always the case:I can use my computer 'normally' if I press the option key at start-up and manually choose my startup disk.
I can boot from a Panther or Tiger installation disk, but not Leopard. If I try the hardware test the computer shuts itself down in the middle of the test.TechTool works and didn't find any issues with my computer. Nor did Disk Utility.I tried to erase both my internal hard-drives and do a clean install of Tiger, but the problem is still there (I have to press option at startup).I tried to reset the PRAM and Cuda/PMA. Doesn't resolve the issue. When I tick 'Restart automatically after power failure' in Energy Saver my Mac will indeed restart, meaning it thinks there was a power failure.Any idea what it might be? And why it only happens in certain situations?Do you think it's a hardware or a software issue?

I came home to discover my power cord had died and my laptop turned off due to no power. I used a friend's power cord to turn it on later that night and send some emails. I bought a new power cord the next day, plugged in, and turned the laptop on. It stayed on the gray screen with a spinning wheel beneath the apple logo for a while. I restarted it and it turned off after a few seconds of the gray screen. An empty bar flashes twice horizontally at the bottom before the spinning bar begins.I tried booting in safe mode, but it would just stay on the gray screen. I tried doing shift+command+v and received a message about keys out of order and disk error full, can't repair. I was able to boot from the install disc, and when I click "Repair Disc" I get the same erros. Not sure what to do now?

On starting up, my macbook pro shuts down after 25 seconds of booting up. The time bar comes on for a while before it simply goes blank and switches off without any notification. Battery appears charged. Could it be a virus?

I have a 27 inch desktop. Upon turning the computer on within seconds the fan comes on. Then it goes to a high fan. Then it goes to a black screen. Then it shuts off. Then if you click the mouse it will come back on. This cycle repeats itself every 5 seconds. Only one time in the past month did it turn on normally and run for me.

I have a late 2010 MacBook Air.Unfortunately, I'm in a country without an Apple store or any kind of official Apple support (no phone number to call).
2 days ago, I plugged in a little USB modem device (wireless is rare here) and my laptop shut down suddenly. It refused to restart at all until I did an SMC reset and then it was working fine (including with the USB modem plugged in).
However, the next day, the same shut-down occurred (when I plugged in the modem again) and now SMC reset is not doing anything. I've held down the start button for a very long time and there aren't any signs of life. The light on the charger shows that it is charging when I plug it in.

I am trying to repair a macbook pro for a friend, I think it's the logic board, but I wanted to check with you all before I go buy one. When the battery is fully charged, I press the power button, I hear the hard drive spin for about 5 seconds then stop. The superdrive on it is broken so I can't try the restore disk. I ordered Pram, I am going to replace that. I tried two different hard drives and I know they are both good, I tried them in the macbook and through a usb port, and the same thing happened both times.

This is a new problem, started immediately after moving the computer gently a foot to the left...
When computer goes to sleep it shuts down.
Then when I press the power button I hear the mechanical click but it doesn't power back up.
Then if I unplug and re-plug it'll start back up. Happens every time like this.
I've, reseated the RAM chips, repaired permissions and reset SDC (SMC? whatever you call it when you hold the power button in for five seconds after unplugging).

My comp. has worked perfectly, Then I installed some updates, Itunes i think? And the comp. Shut down, and when it restarts it works for a min or two, then freezes, and i get the beach ball, that just spins around and around forever.
if I don't try to open anything, or do anything when i restart it, it will just shut down, and restart, then when it comes to the Grey screen with the apple and the little circle below it, the circle looks all pixilated, and just freezes
that is the version its on (Taken two days ago, and sent to a buddy for other reasons completely)

This has been a great computer - bought new in 2004. Recently started to click "off" as it was just powering up. I thought there was a bug - so did a clean and install for OS X - but still does it. The only way to start computer is to hold the Options & Alt key and P and R key at start up until I hear 6 dinging noises of start up (why six is the magic number I don't know. But it is the only combo that works!). Once it is up and running no problems.

My Mac attempts to start up and automatically shuts down on it's own. It continues to start and stop for several minutes and finally boots up. Once it's up it works OK. I've had it in to the Mac store and they tell me it's probably the power supply, but after leaving it on all weekend it seemed to work OK so they didn't do anything. After I brought it home it is still acting in the same way. It's only on trying to start up that it cycles through the start - stop action. Once I turn it off it's the same problem on trying to start again. Does this sound like a power supply problem?

Starting today my Powermac has shut off suddenly a few times in ~15-20 minute intervals. When I have many applications open simultaneously the computer is especially prone to this.
I have never had this happen before in the 3+ years of using this Powermac, and the only differences I can see are that I've switched to a different ISP (I switched from earthlink DSL to Comcast cable), and I now have 4 computers wired in to my 4 port switch router. After turning on my computer I also noticed that my router requires a reset and the internet doesn't work until I do that.

Recently my macbook pro battery stopped working, i took it to the apple service and battery has to be replaced which they will do so soon. They told me i can still use it on the power cord. However when i started it up the screen has a spinning wheel and a loading bar underneath the apple logo, which it never had before, and when the bar is 1/3 done the computer just shuts down every single time at the exact same place. We're not used to having the computer's power button on the keyboard. Occasionally, when trying to hit Delete, one of us turns off the computer power. I'm wondering if there is a setting (I really don't know my way around macs or I'd check myself) that can trigger the shutdown only after the power button has been held 3 seconds or more. This would prevent those accidental shutdowns.

My MacBook Pro 13" Mid-2009 has recently started to shutdown unexpectedly when it starts running on battery power, I don't know if its the battery or the motherboard (I hope it isn't).Â
I tried resetting everything, reinstalled the whole OS, repaired permissions (don't know what for), but I keep getting this. It started about a month ago when I tried to boot up from the battery as power source:
The first try went all the way through the apple showing up with the spinning symbol underneath it, then POOF. Then everytime I tried to boot up again it didn't even show the Apple logo, just 5 or 6 seconds after the chime, POOF AGAIN.
So I connected it to the power adapter and everything went OK, I started working on it, everything was fine until I disconnected it. I kept working on battery and 2 minutes later the computer died again, it sounded like when you keep pressing the power button to force-shutdown, like it's protecting itself from something and it's very frustrating not being able to use your LAPTOP as one.
Oh, one more thing, the battery icon says "Service Battery" and it shows only 1 hour of battery (on 100% charge) the 2 minutes I can work on it before it shuts down.

I have a 13-inch Macbook, Late 2008 model, using iOS Mavericks. While on battery power, the laptop will randomly just turn completely off, despite still having plenty of battery power left. I know it's not a calibration issue where the battery is dead but appears to have charge left, since I'm able to turn the computer back on again and continue using it.Â

I have a 17" G4 1Ghz iMac, we used it until 10 months ago when I got my new 24" Intel 2GHz machine. That new 24" iMac is now in the basement craftroom as the digital hub for pictures/video/etc., while I brought the 17" G4 1Ghz iMac out from my closet for the upstairs loft general web surfing machine. It worked for 2 days and upon shut down would not re-start. I could only hear the fan and nothing else. If I held the power button for 10 seconds upon trying to start up there was a chime that sounded for a few seconds. Once the fan is making small sound, nothing else, if I hold power button for 5-20 seconds the computer will shut down (fan turn off).
Did some online checking, found article on PMU, so I did try and re-set PMU via the apple support article.Resetting the iMac (Flat Panel) Power Management Unit (PMU). Still, no re-start. It was running the latest 10.4.x update upon being put away for 10 months. Here is a picture of the bottom, the red light is on upon trying power on, my finger is on the PMU reset button. Is there any other diagnostic thing I can do? Is there a battery on this logic board that I can check/replace? I'm 100% ok at taking it apart and trying anything to fix it.
