Power Mac G5 :: Powered Down After Sleep And Not Start Up

Dec 27, 2007

I am the original owner of a Power mac G5 dual 2.0 I purchased this machine in april of 2004 and it has been working nearly non stop ever since. Recently I put it into sleep mode and when I came back it had powered down and would not start up. I assume it's the power supply and I would like to know if there is anyway to tell what type of power supply and model thereof without tearing down the machine.

MacBook Pro :: Daisy-chained Bus-powered FW 800 Drives - Enough Power?

Aug 27, 2009

Does anyone have any experience daisy-chaining FW 800 drives on a MBP? I've got one right now, but am thinking of adding another but I don't want to use an AC adapter if I don't need to. Will the MBP give enough juice to run 2 daisy-chained FW 800 drives (2.5")? I've got the late 08 unibody 15".

MacBook Pro :: Power Outage On Neighborhood Block - Plugged In But Not Powered On

Nov 4, 2010

Will this have done any damage? The macbook pro was not powered up, but I had the the mac ac adapter plugged into a power strip with the magsafe adapter connected to the laptop, since I keep it plugged into ac all the time at my desk. The power strip was on while the power outage happened. I had the 3 prong extender cord of the magsafe plugged into the power strip. The power outage was due to a problem with some power lines in my neighborhood, not from a surge of overuse of fuses in my home, so my whole block was without power for about 2 hours.I did notice the power strip has always had 2 lights on; one red, not protected, & one green, grounded. The outlets in my room are only 2 prong, so I have a 2 to 3 prong adapter plugged into the wall that the power strip plugs into. I know this is not the best, but my house is a 1950's era house, & I do not have the knowledge & have safety concerns about trying to convert my bedroom outlets to 3 prong. I hope this did not cause damage to my macbook pro. Is there anything I need to do before powering the mac on to use the next time? besides convert my 2 prong outlet to 3 prong? will there be any static charge? this outage happened on a very hot & dry day in my area.

Mac Pro :: Mac Pro Won't Start From Sleep/ Occasionally Won't Start

Apr 6, 2009

My lovely pro has decided that occasionally it doesn't like the idea of starting from sleep and sometimes won't boot up.

The fan runs at full blast (I think it's the CPU fan), a black screen and the power button on the front glows. I don't have any external drives attached, no stat programs running in the background except little snitch. Generally I close all programs before I leave my desk. After I hard reboot, I get a "do you want to send this to apple?" dialogue, with the errors pointing to the nvidia 8800gt. I don't have the full detail of the error box, I'll post it next time it happens.

I've zapped the pram, run the apple diagnostic and unplugged everything to reset the SMC or whatever it is.

About 1/2 of my wakes from sleep, and about 1 in 4 times when starting exhibit this.

MacBook Air :: Won't Start Up After Put It To Sleep

Sep 12, 2014

My 2011 11 inch macbook air occasionally won't start up after I put it to sleep. I will plug it in and it will be fully charged however nothing will happen if I press the power button. The only thing that happens is the macbook makes a weird noise when the power button is pressed. I am not sure how to describe it but it sounds like a cross between a clicking and pinging noise. It almost sounds like the fan is trying to start up but can't. The strangest part is that this problem has happened twice. In both instances I have left the macbook alone and unplugged for 3 to 4 days without trying to start it up. Both times I have plugged it in after this hiatus and it is has started up and worked fine.

MacBook Pro :: Black Screen At Start Up And After Sleep

Apr 30, 2012

My macbook pro is only a month old, and I've done nothing to it besides write documents and use facebook. Every time I close the lid so the computer can "sleep" it does, but when I open the lid back up, it refuses to wake up. My friend has the same computer and automatically her screen lights up when she opens the lid from sleep. My screen will stay black up to 10 minutes sometimes. Why is this happening? Should I bring it in to Apple? Also, when I shut my computer down, starting it up is another hassel in itself. The screen goes white like it's suppose to, but only for a split second. The apple in the center never shows up, and the screen just goes black. It's very aggravating and I feel like I'm the one with the only messed up mac.

Power Mac G5 :: Wakes Up When Going To Sleep

Nov 30, 2007

I've owned my G5 for 3 years and recently when I put it into sleep mode it immediately wakes back up. I have a screen saver password so it asks me to enter the password, if I don't it goes back to sleep, then immediately wakes up. It repeats this process a few times before finally going to sleep. This is very weird because I haven't installed anything or changed any settings.

Power Mac :: G5 2.0 DP Won't Start

Feb 16, 2012

Ok, I know I've had 2 discussions here already but it still doesn't make sense to me. Everything says its a bad Logic Board.  Ok, Power Mac A1074 2.0 DP  It hangs at white screen w/ grey apple logo and no spinning wheel.  I have ran the Apple hardware diagnostics disc several tims.  Everything comes back that all hard ware is GOOD. I try and run the OS diagnostics on the same disc and it hangs at the white screen/grey apple logo.  I have replaced the hard drive and started it holding 'option"it reads the Apple OS Install disc (just as it reads the hardware diagnostic disc just fine)  when I try to boot from the install disc it again hangs at the white screen/grey apple logo with no spinning wheel.

Power Mac :: G5 Won't Start Up

Mar 5, 2012

I have a 1.8GHz G5 that will just not boot up. When I start it I get the grey screen with the Apple logo and nothing else. The fan then fires up and up. Have tried starting it in Safeboot mode. In this mode I can hear the initial chime and some activity for about 5-6 secs and then nothing. I have an extra 2GB of Kingston RAM in the machine that I put in a couple of years ago and apart from this nothing has changed apart from upgrading the OS's.

Power Mac G5 :: Won't Go To Sleep & Front Fan Clicks

Oct 9, 2007

I am working on a friend's G5. It won't go to sleep. The monitor does, but not the CPU. I have upgraded the firmware, to 10.4.10, zapped the pram, corrected permissions. Just at a loss.

This computer worked fine at work where she had it originally, but when she shut it down and took it home, it has insomnia. Also, one of the front fans sounds like it is scraping or hitting something. It is not a loud noise and the fans still work, just annoying to her since it won't sleep. (Sounds like my one month old).

Power Mac G5 :: No Sleep Mode Running OS 10.4

Nov 23, 2007

My old G5 dual 1.6 will not go into sleep mode. I had upgraded to 10.5 but several of my photography programs would not run so I reverted back to 10.4 by reinstalling the operating system and not wiping the drive clean. I now must shut down everytime or the G5 will get to the point that all of the cooling fans are running full speed and it will not go into sleep mode automatically. Any suggestions other than a clean install?

PowerPC :: G4 Won't Sleep After Power Failure?

Apr 22, 2008

G4 733 D/A , 10.4.11. This morning there was a few second power failure according to my wife. Ther G4 shut down from the power failure. I didn't have "restart after power failure" selected in the Energy Saver prefs. I restarted the G4 when zi got home and after I was done with it, selected SLEEP from the menu. The G4 wouldn't respond to sleep. I logged out and tried SLEEP from another user acc't and from the login screen. I then went into the Energy Saver prefs, made sure everything was as I wanted ( 5 min display sleep, 10 min HD sleep, and "put disk to sleep whenever possible". I then rebooted and sleep still wouldn't function.

Power Mac :: Why Is ADC Monitor Not Turning On After Put G5 To Sleep

Mar 7, 2012

Why is my ADC monitor not turning on after I put my G5 to sleep? I am running an adaptor to my G5 from the ADC monitor (DVI to ADC).The screen usually runs fine when I reset the monitor or turn it off but as for when I put it to sleep, no such luck..This has happened once before and last time I just waited and randomly turned it on a couple days later and boom, the screen booted up.I have tried basic options, like resetting the computer several times, pulling the power cable out of the G5 for several minutes and even a PRAM reset but nothing seems to have made it work as of yet.I assume it's within the G5 as it has happened a few times and the monitor works fine when I test it on other computers..Also as I mentioned before this is not the first time it occured and it just randomly seems to come on whenever.

Power Mac :: G5 Won't Start Up Correctly / What To Do?

Dec 10, 2007

I will start up my G5 and I hear the chime but at that point my CRD monitors never come on. The lights on my USB hub don't light up, either. Then my G5 fans rev up really high. I have to hold down the power button to get it to shut off, then after waiting around 10 seconds I'll try to turn it on again. After several times of repeating this process, my monitors finally kick on, the USB hub lights up and all is fine for the rest of the day. But it's really aggravating having to do this up to five times to get things going. It's like the G5 isn't communicating to the monitors or the USB hub.

Could this be a motherboard issue? It shouldn't be a power issue, as the only thing plugged into my battery backup APC is the tower itself. I'm at a loss here...

Power Mac :: Os 9 Won't Start Anymore

Mar 29, 2012

I received a semi working powerMac G4 Cube from a freecycle community, and while initially it worked fine, I had to dissemble the unit to replace the dvd drive which had a dvd stuck in it. I used one from a second unit that I was also given and I think the dvd is also bad , as placing the 'software installer', which I presume is OS9, causes dvd unit to make what sounds like spinning noise ( Does not sound to me like its reading anything ), and then after a few seconds it spits it right back out, and this happens everytime. Before I dissembled the unit, the cube at least booted into OS9 just fine, yet I am sure I put everything back properly. I might have chosen a bad setting in system perferences I suppose, and if so is there a fix short of getting a new dvd unit so I can reinstall OS 9 ? Also, I did try 'control' while startup, and it takes me to a very odd screen, with a icon for 'reload' ( browser icon similarity ) , or what looks like a right arrow. Choosing either does nothing, short of showing what looks like a watch moving in circular fashion.

Power Mac G5 :: Computer Now Wakes Up Immediately After I Put It To Sleep

Nov 14, 2007

I've got a dual G5 running Panther and I put it to sleep when I go to work in the morning. Last night, I wanted to try out Tiger (yes, I know - I'm way behind the times) so I installed it on a FireWire drive and booted off it for a couple of hours to see how things worked. I then went back to my internal Panther drive, and everything is ok except for one thing: when I hit "sleep", it goes to sleep, the screens turn off, and then for some reason I immediately hear the internal drives spin back up and the thing turns on again! Why can't it stay asleep?

MacBook Pro :: No Sleep Function With Power Cord?

Apr 8, 2012

My 2011 macbook pro does not go into sleep mode with the power cord on. The sleep light goes on, but does not go into "pulse" mode and the fans continue to run as well as the hard disk keeps running.

The issue started a few weeks back. I have tried switching off the internet sharing and other possible settings that might hinder the MBP going into sleep mode when the power cord is in. I have even down loaded PleaseSleep but that does not seem to function either.

Seems like a minor issue, but if the MBP does not enter into sleep mode correctly I am afraid the built-up heat might damage disks, rams or screen.

Power Mac :: Computer Returns To Sleep After Awakening

Apr 16, 2012

When I awaken my G5 in the morning (when its chilly) it goes back to sleep almost immediately. This may repeat twice before it finally stays on. I initially thought it was my HD, a new purchase at the time. However, I have switched to another internal drive and have been experiencing identical results. I've run TechTool Pro, Onyx, Applejack, and Disk Utility, thinking it was a HD issue, but having switched drives, I'm thinking it must be a hardware issue of some sort.
