Power Mac :: My G5 Constantly Crashes

Apr 28, 2012

I started to have problems with a used PowerMac G5 that I bought on December last year. The computer came with dual G5 at 2.0GHz, 8GB and 160GB Sata hard drive. The computer was running Leopard 10.5.8.

Once in my home I erase completely the hard drive and installed Leopard from scratch and ran software updates. At this point the computer was functioning good, sometimes crashes when I tryed to import images on iPhoto or Aperture, but appart from this nothing more. Few weeks ago I installed a new hard drive, the disk it's ok and doesn't give problems. The problems started two weeks ago, when computer crashes constantly and at any time with any reason, kernel crashes reports sometimes reports for Safari, other times for iTunes, others for uTorren, mdworker and mostly by Unknow application. I must to restart the computer by force shutdown, that only put thing worse. I was looking for documentation about solve my problem, but there is not so much responses.

Mac Pro :: It Crashes Everything Constantly

May 22, 2012

I have a 1,1 Mac Pro running 10.7.3 . Has 11 GB of RAM and a ATI Radeon HD 5770 two 1.5TB hard drives and two 55GB hard drives. Everything else is factory.

The past few weeks it has been acting weird for the first time ever.

I first noticed that it would no longer launch Aperture because it said the grahpics card did not meet minimum requirements. In iTunes, it won't show videos (just blank screen) or album artwork. It won't load any kind of installer app. It won't load system preferences. It won't load the console. It will load the terminal. Won't load Safari. Will load Mail.

The computer itself seems to be running at around half the normal 'speedyness'.

I've tried downloading the OS X install update to 10.7.3 to install, but the install crashes. I've tried downloading the safari update and it crashes. I tried downloading Lion again through app store and it crashes when I get to the password screen. Every option I have to try and get my computer back up.... it crashes.

OS X :: ITunes Crashes Constantly When Playing CD?

Oct 20, 2009

I've had a long struggle with iTunes and SuperDrives. Ppc iMac 5G, 10.5.8. Internal drive died; I purchased a La Cie ext. drive, couldn't get it to work even after 2 trips back to their repair, bought a replacement Toshiba internal drive from OWC and installed myself after much struggle. Now it is working, but the iTunes problems remains exactly the same and neither AppleCare nor the Apple iTunes Forum has been any help.
DVDs play fine and so do files in my iTunes.

1. I insert a CD. It takes forever to try to look up GraceNote.
2. Then it displays that it crashed and to Relaunch. I click it.
3. Then it displays it crashed again and to Reset and Relaunch. I click it.
4. Finally the disc comes up in iTunes and can be played.
5. After the CD concludes, it crashes again.

Intel Mac :: It Crashes Constantly At Startup?

Apr 13, 2012

I've had Mac's since my IIsi in '91 and currently the proud owner of MacBook Pro, iPhone and iMac which is just 18 months old.2 days ago I switched the machine off (iMac) and it hasn't been fully back on since. Each time I start it it automatically goes into soft boot mode. As the small bar moves across the screen it stops after about 1 centimetre (.4 of an inch) and simply whines and shuts down. I've tried the old tricks of holding down 'c' and 'd'. On one of the attempts I did reach the desktop and managed to run disk utility which said there were no problems. However, once I rebooted it simply carried on doing the same. I also managed to run Techtool deluxe which comes with the Apple Extended Warranty. Unfortunately it's not fully compatiable with OSX Lion so didn't run properly.

I've not known a Mac to be so knackered before. I have tried the command-R scenario but I don't think reloading Lion OSX is the cure for what appears to be a serious problem. When I shut down the iMac on Thursday I had Acrobat and Photoshop open, also iTunes and Mail. I generally use Facetime these days but on Thursday (I haven't used my Skype account for 18 months) I did install the latest version of Skype as someone required a Skype call with me. The software installed okay and I had the conversation with the person though the camera feature didn't work my end. I do wonder whether installing the Skype software has done something to the iMac. However, I don't see that it would stop it starting up completely!

Intel Mac :: It Freezes/crashes Constantly?

Jun 13, 2012

I have a 2006 imac (1GB memory) with tiger that had been having some issues last year with crashing so I ended up and installing snow leopard and it worked great for about a year and now its acting up again. It freezes at least 2 times a day and I can't open the force quit window so I shut it off manually, but when I turn it back on it has these weird lines on it like a line of pixels got corrupted or something, but sometimes they go away. I save everything to an external drive so I don't think it has to do with it being overloaded. I did notice it mostly happens when I'm multitasking (more than one tab open, or word and firefox open at the same time) or watching a movie. Occasionally it will crash and the screen goes a peach color with white lines and I have to manually restart.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: My IMovie Constantly Crashes

Jul 5, 2012

I have had my Mac Book Pro in and out of the apple store about 5 times now. iMovie will crash CONSTANTLY!!! They replaced the RAM and Logicboard which fixed the problem for about a week. I cannot seem to figure out how to delete the iMovie preferences. Cant fint the com.apple.iMovieApp.plist file anywhere trust me, its not on my computer. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled iMovie. The scrubbing in the editing will stop working and the video will freeze and it crashes 100% of the time when previewing the project in fullscreen. I have sent literally 1000 crash reports to apple which I find useless because nobody has any record of them, not the Apple store, not Apple support, not Steve Jobs.

As soon as I enter the site, the beach ball shows up and I have to force quit the browser. I have the latest version of flash. Applications :: ITunes Crashes Constantly On Playing CDs

Oct 30, 2009

iTunes has been crashing for months when playing CDs (but it's fine for DVDs and the audio files on iTunes). ppc G5 iMac, 10.5.8. Twice on inserting a CD, again when the CD concludes, and often during playing, or when I try to adjust volume. It did this with a LaCie external drive and now that I've installed a new replacement Toshiba internal superdrive it still does exactly the same thing. After reading about the many bugs with v9.0.1 I obtained v8.0.2, deleted everything to do with iTunes and reinstalled the older version. However, the crashes continue unabated. Have run Disk Warrior, Tech Tools Pro5, reset the hardware pulling the AC plug etc., run Permissions over and over, thrown out prefs files, etc. No improvement. AppleCare on iMac is expired and no other forum has helped. Couldn't find another ap just to play CDs or I would use it! QuickTime doesn't work.

Basically other than that, ive tried moving ~/Library/Mail across to a temp folder, launching mail and then closing it and moving back my mail folder back and still get the error. Checked that i dont have any to-do list items in my iCal and yeah. still get this error.

Applications :: Safari Crashes Constantly On YouTube Access

Safari has been crashing for me every time I open it. It's mostly on sites like YouTube, which leads me to believe that it's a flash problem. When I open the page it just freezes up and the pinwheel just keeps spinning and spinning. I noticed these problems on my MacBook after I upgraded to Snow Leopard, and now they are arising again on my recently purchased Mac Pro (also running SL). I'm running latest version of SL, Safari, and Flash.

Power Mac :: G5 Constantly Prompting Shutdown

Feb 1, 2012

Lately, whenever I start it up in the morning, I will almost immediately get a shutdown prompt ("Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now" ...). Nothing on the desk is touching the power button. Whenever I click "cancel", the prompt pops back up within a few seconds. If I hit shutdown or restart, it will just startup again with the same problem. Putting it to sleep doesn't work either, because as soon as it dozes off, another prompt pops up to wake it back up.

My company's IT guy thinks it is a power supply issue. He suggested that I unplug the cord from the machine and let it sit for 20-30 minutes (thinking it was building up too much of a residual charge or something like that). This actually worked for a period and still works most days, albeit not very reliably.

One intersting side note is that this problem only seems to occur in the morning. After, I've messed with the power cord and rebooted a couple of times, the machine seems to just get over the issue and I can work normally for much of the day. I'd to think I have a serious powersupply issue that might cause a crash.

Mac Pro :: USB Ports Constantly Losing Power?

Mar 22, 2012

Ive got a 2008 Mac Pro and recently Ive been experiencing some issues with its USB ports. The front usb ports have a USB antenna connected and some time later, it just loses power and I have to disconnect it and connect it  in order to make it work again. Besides that, Ive got a  USB hub connected in one of the back ports. In it, is my camera and my keyboard. After some time, it just loses power. Not at the same time than the usb antenna, but in less that an hour I have to repeat the process 2-3 times. Worth to note, that in the two back usb ports left, Ive got an external hard drive in each and I dont have problems, there are always seen in the finder.

OS X :: Battery Not Recognized - Power Lead Constantly Green

Sep 7, 2009

I have a Macbook from the beginning of 2008. Last July. I started to have problems with the battery , it was not recognized. It had an X icon and the power lead was green all the time. I took the computer to an Apple outlet and they told me that the battery was finish and I needed to buy a new battery, I bought a new battery and still the computer didnt recognize the battery, apparently the battery was not good. Apple changed the battery and now, I have a 3 battery. Now the battery is charging but on and off. Last week the battery was working fine for 4 days, but after 4 days the battery was not recognized, x icon again and lead green all the time.

24 hours later started to work fine. Today as I write this, the battery is on and off, two minutes is charging, 5 minutes is not recognized, and so on. I tried to reset the PRAM, System Management, etc but still the same thing, I even deleted ITunes, as the first time I started to have problems it was after downloading a new Itunes update and last week the battery was working fine for 4 days and crashed just after I started to charge my Ipod. Maybe it isn't related at all but I don't know. Could it be the logic board? the thing is I took the computer to Apple for a diagnosis but they told me that they didn't have a clue what it could be.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: External HD Crashes Lion Constantly

Apr 26, 2012

I bought a WD my book studio 2tb from the apple store and tried formatting it. There was a quick formatter already on the disk but this wouldn't work correctly, so I used the apple disk utility to 'erase data'. I left it on overnight and it seemed to have hung and gone no further, so I turned it off. Now every time I plug the drive in to try and format it, everything freezes and I get the spinning busy wheel.

I've tried disabling spotlight indexing, resetting pram, starting in safe mode and accessing disk utility from the recovery menu. Without fail, within seconds of connecting the drive it crashes everything and I have no idea what it's doing.

Updated to OSX Lion. Now everytime I'm not connecting it to the power adapter, sooner or later the screen flickers and it crashes or freezes straight away. It's usually caused when I'm using the browser to open a flash site, which is probably heavy on graphic processing. Or watching a video on quicktime or youtube, even when it's not using a flash player on youtube. Or working on a graphic heavy processing apps like Photoshop. It's updated with latest software updates.

Power Mac G5 :: Wake Up From Sleep Mode Causing Crashes

Oct 20, 2007

I've been fighting bad sleep crashes for over a year. Sometimes it would freeze when it started sleep, sometimes when trying to wake from a sleep. I've spent countless hours researching the problem, reading everything on the boards. I tried resetting the PMU, turning off Bluetooth, removing all USB, and all of the other suggestions. Nothing alleviated the problem. Last week I replaced the lithium battery on the mother board because it wasn't keeping the correct time. So far it is sleeping and waking perfectly for the first time in ages. No more freezes or jet engine fans. I have my fingers crossed. Power Mac G5 dual 2 GHz, purchased June, 2003

IMac :: System Crashes Suddenly Like Power Failure

My IMac crashes sometimes very suddenly, like in a power failure. It doesn't force quit or shut down, it just goes like somebody pulled the plug. It's usually possible to start it up again after 30minutes or an hour. The plug and lead seem to be fine. I tested it on another mac. The obvious suspicion would be overheating, but how can that be caused so suddenly (and how can I fix it)? It's an IMac Intel core duo, 20", 2 ghz, 2gb ram from 2006. My girlfriend has a 12 inch Powerbook G4. She noticed that the battery life was starting to dwindle. Tonight, she tried using it. It wouldn't power up. The battery indicator showed one flickering power circle. The adaptor has the green circle on it, indicating the battery has a full charge. However, the computer won't charge up.I've read the 12 inchers don't have separate PMUs. Could that prevent the machine from starting? She was using it earlier this evening, as she e-mailed me pictures from our vacation.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 - When I Press Power Button, Power Fan Comes On, But No Picture Shows

I have a iBook G4 laptop and there seems to be something very wrong with it. It started a few days ago just randomly. I was reading something on the internet and the screen went black on me, but the power was still on (I clicked CAPS LOCK to see if there was power). I then proceeded to push the power button and the power went off. When I pressed the power button again to turn it on, it made that internal noise it always makes and then the fan came on, and wouldn't turn off. There was no picture on the screen at all. Completely dead. But there was power, because when I clicked on the CAPS LOCK, the light came on). I tried pressing on the power button for at least 15 seconds and even went as long as a minute, and the power didn't go off.

Hardware :: Repair 23" Cinema Display (no Power After Power Surge)

The display shows no sign of life (no power light, etc) and the brick has been tested and is OK. My local service place says that they will have to send the display back to Apple which means a minimum of $400 for repair so I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar issue that they resolved successfully? The service place suggested that Apple would replace the logic board but is there any way to test to see if this is the main issue? I have seen logic boards sold separately online but would be hesitant to buy it without know that this would fix this issue.

Power Mac G5 :: G5 Power Supply Beeping/Churping Corrected With Leopard

Nov 8, 2007

I made this a new topic because I think it is important enough to do so. Probably most of those that originally complained about this have moved on to the new MacPro but I am sure there are still enough G5 owners out there that still have concerns about this topic.

A clean install of Leopard eliminates the infamous power supply beeping

Its amazing, my G5 is like a new machine; no more of the annoying power supply beep; although, I learned to live with it after a while and didn't even notice it. However, the silence is now very noticeable.
