Power Mac G5 :: Wants To Update Power Mac G5 1.8GHz Firmware ?
Nov 23, 2007
I have a problem described by Apple in document Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) 1.8GHz models stop responding randomly.
How can I update the firmware because my G5 1.8 screen is blank? Thought that I could make my G5 1.8 as a hard disk for my MacBook, or I may try to update over the network. Is there a risk of corrupting my MacBook if I try?
Information:

After using Open Firmware Update my G4 went into a crazy circle. At first, it was impossible to start up, and when it was possible, just for a couple of seconds, and then the translucent screen asking you to restart the computer pressing for a few seconds the start up button.

I purchased a G5 in 2005. Never once used the drive for DVD. So I decided to use it today, and it doesn't work. I tried to burn a DVD that didn't work. The drive doesn't even recognize it. I did some research, I came to the conclusion that I have to update the pioneer d112 firmware. Seems simple but the pioneer update is for windows format!

What resolution are you getting using the built in VGA?
How about HDMI using an adapter?

I am about to sell my Dual 1.8Ghz G5 Power Mac. I bought this from somebody used, and it came with Leopard on it.How can I erase everything on it? I am used to a dell where I just pressed two buttons and it just put a clean copy of XP on. Do Macs require discsI wasn't given a disc when I purchased the Mac, so I sure hope not!

My PCI bay fan is running at full speed no matter what. The temperature sensor reads correctly in OS X, so I don't think it's a bad sensor.
Is there any way to set the fan speed manually, say in openfirmware?
It's a 1.8 DP June '04; I've ran ASD 2.5.8 to calibrate and test the mobo, which passed.

I have a June 2004 revision Power Mac G5 (DP 1.8Ghz) with an AGP slow that is dying for a more powerful graphics card.
I have had the machine since new and have it paired with a 23" Cinema Display, Magic Mouse, BT Apple keyboard, 4GB of Kingston RAM, a pair of 500gb internal HDs, several TBs of external storage, Logitech Z2300 speakers, etc. We also have a new 15" Mac Book Pro, a 13" Mac Book, an Apple TV, Airport Extreme, etc. The desktop doesn't get a TON of use but it is still snappy enough for a lot of what I use it for.
However, since I installed Leopard on it, the OS is nowhere near as fast as it was before (with respect to UI graphics, etc).... I should have expected the newer OS would take more of a toil on the system (especially the graphics card) then did Tiger.... the system has only the factory-installed 64mb GeForce card.... I'm assuming that Leopard, probably more than Tiger, can draw from the GPU for graphic-needs/UI work and I'm assuming that a new graphics card would make a difference....
I just need help deciphering the cards that are available.... 9800XT?? X800??? Any advice on compatible 8x AGP cards would be AMAZING.

My power mac g5 has suddenly started to shut itself down in the early stages of boot up. The apple logo appears and the spinning timer logo spins befor a complete shut down.Â
I have used my o/s disc to access the disk utility. Repair disc is not an option. Verify disc is an option but this process fails due to " invalid nodes" Â

i accidentally hit the power switch on the wall during an upgrade (might even have been a firmware upgrade, I didn't really look at what was going on). Anyway, now it hangs on the silver Apple logo screen with a spinny wheel on reboot. It's only 3 months old, it's the $599 model.Â
What to do? I see that you can download firmware restoration disks but they appear to be limited to earlier versions of the Mac mini.
Info:

I bought recently (this week!) an PM G4 MDD 1.25DP with radeon 9000PRO, 1.25G of RAM, combo drive and two hard drives with 200 gigas both of them. This is my first Mac! I'm realy in love with it.
The first one is:in the morning when I try to start my G4, only after 30 or 40 attempt I get it. I push the power button so many times.... I pull away the power cord in same "so many times" until the Mac "wake up". After that it's work especially fine. I can shut down and restart the Mac unexceptionally.
The second one is: when I try to update the Leopard and when they ask me to reboot, the progressing bar showed never headway. But others updating, e.g. the Itunes, proceed like a workaday.

My girlfriend has a 12 inch Powerbook G4. She noticed that the battery life was starting to dwindle. Tonight, she tried using it. It wouldn't power up. The battery indicator showed one flickering power circle. The adaptor has the green circle on it, indicating the battery has a full charge. However, the computer won't charge up.I've read the 12 inchers don't have separate PMUs. Could that prevent the machine from starting? She was using it earlier this evening, as she e-mailed me pictures from our vacation.

I have a iBook G4 laptop and there seems to be something very wrong with it. It started a few days ago just randomly. I was reading something on the internet and the screen went black on me, but the power was still on (I clicked CAPS LOCK to see if there was power). I then proceeded to push the power button and the power went off. When I pressed the power button again to turn it on, it made that internal noise it always makes and then the fan came on, and wouldn't turn off. There was no picture on the screen at all. Completely dead. But there was power, because when I clicked on the CAPS LOCK, the light came on). I tried pressing on the power button for at least 15 seconds and even went as long as a minute, and the power didn't go off.

I had a bad power surge (USB hub that was plugged into the back of the display had the wrong power cord plugged in... very stupid mistake I know!!) take out my 23" Cinema Display. The display shows no sign of life (no power light, etc) and the brick has been tested and is OK. My local service place says that they will have to send the display back to Apple which means a minimum of $400 for repair so I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar issue that they resolved successfully? The service place suggested that Apple would replace the logic board but is there any way to test to see if this is the main issue? I have seen logic boards sold separately online but would be hesitant to buy it without know that this would fix this issue.

I made this a new topic because I think it is important enough to do so. Probably most of those that originally complained about this have moved on to the new MacPro but I am sure there are still enough G5 owners out there that still have concerns about this topic.
A clean install of Leopard eliminates the infamous power supply beeping
Its amazing, my G5 is like a new machine; no more of the annoying power supply beep; although, I learned to live with it after a while and didn't even notice it. However, the silence is now very noticeable.

I have found that by plugging in my Apogee Duet firewire audio interface and ONLY WHEN AppleFWAudio was loaded there was a 10c CPU raise that was making my MBP (late 2008) hot!I wanted to monitor the power that was required for Duet to run and to see if the temperature rise was due to that, so:With Apogee drivers uninstalled (just to be sure its not their drivers related, which is notMBP on battery power with System Profiler opened (to monitor the mA required by the computer from System Profiler -> Power)

a friend recently gave me a g5 power mac that had some issues, and the failure was described as intermittant. The machine supposedly would work properly when booted and start freezing up after time, but if turned on the next day it would work properly for some time. I assumed it was an overheating issue, but apperently there is more to the picture. I have tried booting the machine quite a few times and the display always reads no signal. The machine sounds as if it were booting normally, but there is not output. At first I assumed it was my display cable, which was a DVI-D single link, however the DVI-D dual link cable leads to the same result. Is it nessicary to have a DVI-I cable? None of the error LEDs light up on the motherboard. After doing some hunting I haven't found anyone with the same issue, but I am wondering if I should assume the graphics card is dead. What steps do I need to take to isolate a graphics card failure in a power mac g5?

During installation, my graphics got all screwed up. You can see a screenshot of what's going on at this link: [URL]. I'm actually writing on the defective computer, so it's hard for me to see what's in the screenshot. Here's what I did so far. I tried removing half of the RAM first, then the second half, the problem persist. I rebooted on a different system, it's still there (so not software). I tried Hardware Test utility, it says everything is fine. I unplugged the Video Card, cleaned it a little along with the connectors, nothing. It happened DURING the update to 10.4.11 (not after I rebooted). I'm pretty sure I can take screenshots of it, so it's not simply in the connectors to the monitors. It happens on both my monitors (also when I unplug one of them).

We just updated our G5s here at the lab (QuickTime and Garageband ), and now the sound output is extremely distorted and crackly regardless if its a video on cnn or a song off iTunes. Tried Zapping the PRAM and repairing permissions, even reinstalled QT from the standalone installer on apple to no avail.

I got up and tripped over the power cable and It popped out (thanks magsafe! ) but the computer immediately shut down. I plugged it back in and started it up to see my clock was messed up. I changed the clock and redid the update. Everything seems to be working now but I was just wondering if anything else could have happened?

For some bizzare reason my Mac wont restart or update, not to sure when the problem started as I normally just put it into sleep! But basically when I click update it says the updates need the Mac to be restarted, I click ok. It basically logs out and goes to the Username screen to login. Same story when trying to restart/shutdown; just goes to the login screen.Â
I'm tempted to do a OS Wipe and start Fresh! However it's going to take 3 hours to download the latest OS! Patients isn't my strongest point !Â

I have the problem that I need to frequently power cycle (shut off and on) my dsl modem to maintain a reasonable speed with my internet connection. It is making the internet experience pretty user unfriendly. Does any one know whether there is a way to optimize my internet connection such that this is not required so frequently (couple times a day)? I am on my second dsl modem, and the same problem has occurred with each of them. ATT simply advises me that my solution is to power cycle the modem to sync the system, whatever that means.

I added 2 sticks of 512 to my power mac g5 1.6. I had ahard time getting the computer to see the new ram, but finally was able to kinda get it working after zapping the pram. However my computer only saw these 2 sticks as 256, odd. So i attempted to troubleshoot the problem. I tried just installing the new ram, but the computer wouldnt boot. I tried a few different combos with the other 4 sticks i had, but nothing. I put the old memory back in, and still nothing. The power led looks to blink once every five seconds or so. I tried pressing the pmu reset button, but still the same out come. I also tried taking out the battery, nothing.

I disconnected it from the extension cord as well as all the peripherals attached to it and nothing. I tried a different start up disk and again there wasn't a sound. Then i unplugged it and reset the SMU on the mother board and air sprayed the computer to remove all dust. Then plugged it back and it came back on.
